Welcome to the Bienvenue au’ UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH

Welcome to the 2015 CIS Cross Country Championships. I hope that you will enjoy your time at the University of Guelph and I would like to wish nothing but the best to the over 300 student-athletes that are here representing 29 different institutions. Our staff have worked extremely hard to help ensure that this year’s CIS Cross Country Championship is the best yet, and I know I can speak on behalf of the entire Guelph community when I say that we are thrilled to be hosting such a prestigious event. It has been truly remarkable to witness how rapidly the overall depth of talent in this sport, on both the Men’s and Women’s sides, has grown over the last several years and I cannot wait to see how this year’s competition unfolds in what promises to be one of the most tightly-contested CIS Championships in years. University of Guelph, Director of Athletics Tom Kendall

CIS CROSS COUNTRY 101 / Course de fond CIS 101 The Canadian Interuniversity Sport Cross-Country Championships are the National culminating event to determine individual and team titles Men compete over 10km and women compete over 6km; exact distances vary based on the course A random draw determines each team’s starting box (position on the start line). Runners will have a 2 metre box they share with their teammates. They will often start quickly to get position. The races in Guelph are done on loop courses, there are two loops: a one kilometre loop and a 2.5 kilometre loop. Women run one 1km followed by two 2.5km loops. Men run four 2.5km loops.

Each participating team may submit a roster of 10 athletes (for each gender), 7 of which compete in the race. A minimum of 5 competitors are required to be eligible for team ranking A team score for each gender is determined based on the sum of finishing places of each team’s top 5 runners. The team with the lowest points total is awarded the team title The individuals of each gender finishing in places 1-7 are honoured as First Team All-Canadians, while places 8-14 are honoured as Second Team All-Canadians The Athlete of the Year is awarded to the top finisher in each race The Rookie of the Year Award is awarded to the top rookie finisher in the race The Cross Country Coach of the Year is voted on by all coaches following the conclusion of the race

Electronic chip timing is used to determine each competitor’s place and time.

CIS REFlECTIONS: Reid Coolsaet & Eric Gillis

Eric Gillis and Reid Coolsaet are currently two of Canada’s premier marathon runners. Both are Olympians who have competed in a combined total of three Olympic Games, with a potential trip to Rio in the near future for both athletes. But before all of that, both were standout CIS Cross Country athletes. While it has been just over a decade since they wrapped up their university careers, both Olympians still hold their CIS experiences close to their hearts.

How do you think competing in the CIS allowed you to develop as an athlete?

Definitely the team aspect stands out the most. Racing at World Championships or at the Commonwealth Games, you rarely hear your own name called during the race, and a lot of the time, you meet your teammates for the first time the week of the competition and they’re often just focused on their own races. At the University level, the team atmosphere you experience as part of a Cross Country team is unlike anything I can compare to in other meets I’ve ever been in. Racing for not only yourself, but your teammates and your whole school is special.

For me, racing at the CIS Cross Country Championships was integral to my progression. At Guelph, I had to work hard just to be one of the Top 7 runners from our school! The CIS was competitive in my days, and are even more competitive now. Competing at a CIS Cross Country Championship gives you the opportunity to race against world class athletes and really which prepares you well for an international career down the line.

Eric Gillis

The year you won, do you remember how the race played out? It was a really, really windy day so I wasn’t planning on doing much of the leading and instead just pushing the pace. At 3k I felt like the pace was not going too fast and I felt strong so I sprinted up a hill and was able to gap the leader. I thought since I was able to gap them I would just keep pushing which I wasn’t expecting to do. I knew that I couldn’t let up. My shoelace came undone at 5k. In Moncton there are some soccer fields that you go around, the flat section. One of my most vivid memories is that flat section and my shoelace whipping my other leg in the wind every step. It was annoying but it was fine since I was in the lead! I remember thinking “do I have time to tie my shoelace when I’m in the lead!?”

8 2015 CIS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

What, specifically, are you looking forward to about the CIS Cross Country Championships being in Guelph this year? My wife and I, who were both on the St.FX Cross Country team together, try to make it out to the CIS Championships every year to cheer on X-Men & Women and the Gryphons. When Guelph hosted CI’s back in 2004, my wife and I drove from Antigonish (Nova Scotia). It was my first year not competing, but I had two more years of school remaining for teacher’s college. We took a van and we were the only two old enough to drive so packed in a bunch of others who weren’t competing but who wanted to come watch. My wife and I actually started dating after that road trip, so for us, this year’s CI’s being in Guelph will be like an 11year dating anniversary!

CIS ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: bruce kidd The first ever Men’s CIS Cross Country Championship was held at the University of Guelph back in 1963. Meet the U of T student-athlete, Bruce Kidd, who won that race and went on to become an Olympic athlete.

Bruce Kidd, 1961

Bruce Kidd – “I have several memories of my race that day in Guelph. I remember it was a beautiful sunny day, but cold, with temps close to or below freezing. It was also the day after American president John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The starter was the secretary treasurer of the thenCIAU, Danny McLeod. He called us to the line and ordered us to take off our sweats and said “we will now have two minutes of silence for President Kennedy.” We all froze! I just remember being chilled to the bone trying to be still and silent for two minutes.

CIAU, as well as the Canadian and American Open Championships. Two of those four races were held at the University of Guelph (OUS & CIAU) and all of my memories of racing at Guelph are fond ones. The courses were wonderful, the races always seemed tight, and the hosting was first-class. With such a strong running history at U of G, it is only fitting that they played host the first ever CIS Cross Country Championships for both the Men (1963) and Women (1980).”

As for the race, it was a great course. Guelph Cross Country was never for the faint of heart; there were always sections that went through ploughed fields, cattle or even pig pens. The only person who stayed with me into the latter parts of the race was Chris Williamson, who was a really strong runner from the University of New Brunswick, and a training partner of mine in the summers at the East York Track Club. I was able to break away from Chris with about a mile to go. Overall, 1963 was a great year for me as I actually went on to win four consecutive Cross Country races that season: OUS,

From Playground to Podium

Du terrain de jeu au podium

In Canada, all levels of government work with sport organizations to create an inclusive sport system that promotes physical activity, sport participation, athletic success and active living.

Au Canada, tous les paliers de gouvernement travaillent de concert avec les organismes sportifs afin de créer un milieu plus ouvert à tous qui favorise l’activité physique, la participation au sport, le succès de nos athlètes et la vie active.

Supporting our athletes helps them develop qualities like dedication, teamwork and community spirit.

L’appui offert aux athlètes les aide à acquérir des qualités comme la détermination, l’esprit d’équipe et le sens communautaire.

We are proud to support all our athletes, from playground to podium, in their pursuit of sporting excellence.

Nous sommes fiers d’appuyer nos athlètes dans leur quête d’excellence sportive, et ce, du terrain de jeu au podium.
