How Can We Build Potential? The University of Guelph’s strengths in physical activity programming, athletics, community engagement, health education and research will come together in the revitalized Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. We will serve our students, our campus, our city and the greater community to unleash the potential inside us all.

Building Excellence Varsity sports ignite a passion; they fuel the motivation and success of almost 700 student athletes at the University of Guelph. The power struggles on the field, the ice and the court awaken the competitor in all of us. Every season our varsity teams battle the best in their sport. Gryphons are making the right moves, earning respect and winning championships. But their excellence doesn’t end with the game. Varsity athletes go round for round in their academics

IGNITE and professional careers. Gryphons know what dedication and leadership means and they know how to cross the finish line.

Building Community Instilling active living at an early age can make a lifetime of difference. Sports, summer camps and organized programs engage youth when it matters most, encouraging life-long healthy

habits. Physical activity improves children’s social skills, character, self-confidence and academic performance.

As an important partner in improving the health of our community, the University of Guelph will address the need for increased athletics programming and education for youth.

Building Wellness Active living is a lifestyle. It is a mind-set that gets you through every workout, every kilometre

and every game. Fitness classes and intramural programs offer our students and community the opportunity to stay healthy and make friends.

Keeping fit also means expertise in nutrition, proper body maintenance and overall wellness. The

University of Guelph has a line-up of professionals ready to produce health and wellness programming for an active community.

Building Connections Imagine a building where open social spaces invite youth, students, citizens and community

The Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre We believe we can have a lasting impact on the next generation through athletics and recreation. To Build Potential the Department of Athletics must improve and expand our facilities. Renovation of the present W. F. Mitchell Centre includes an upgrade to the gymnasium to

accommodate recreation and intramurals. It will also provide an elite development centre for varsity athletes and community athletes with national team potential. The facility will contain testing,

training and injury management services for the University of Guelph and the Guelph community.

Expansion plans include a new structure to house a two-storey, 25,000 square foot fitness centre. The new space will hold a suspended running track, varsity basketball and volleyball courts, a climbing wall and numerous multi-purpose rooms for fitness and recreation activities.

The newly expanded facility will include a 2,200 seat events centre, social spaces, concession areas, a merchandise store, new locker rooms and offices for Department of Athletics staff.

This centre will create a hub for health and wellness on campus, help make Guelph Canada’s

healthiest community and propel the University of Guelph to become a global leader in promoting healthy living for everyone.

The Pursuit of Excellence Participating in athletics enriches the university experience by building character, discipline,

tenacity, teamwork and leadership — qualities needed to succeed academically, professionally and personally.

Our varsity athletes practice 20 to 25 hours per week, carry a full course load and must maintain the high academic standards expected of all University of Guelph students. Student athletes often face challenges, striving to excel in sports and school while managing educational costs because the demands on their time make it difficult to hold part-time work.

ENRICH Scholarships help them achieve their dreams of excellence in all aspects of the university

experience, producing strong leaders and advocates for active living that our communities need.

THANK YOU We know life is made up of many moments, and sometimes it just takes one to make the change of a

lifetime. Do you remember the day you chose your sport or passion? That decision helped define who you are today.

Help us in our mission to BUILD POTENTIAL in our students, our youth and our community. Active living makes a difference. The Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre will create a healthier tomorrow.
