WELCOME to our Adult Community Learning prospectus for 2018-2019.

You can apply for courses online by selecting your chosen course and clicking on the ‘enquire’ button for it. Alternatively, there is an application form at the back of this prospectus, should you prefer to apply in this way. If you have any queries please contact our Programme Leader Jane Walden (details below).

I am delighted to share this prospectus with you demonstrating the superb range of special interest and hobby courses we offer. You are never too old to learn something new. So whether you are looking to try your hand at making jewellery, fancy improving your Spanish in time for your next holiday or need to brush up on your IT skills, don’t put it off, sign up to our programme.

Digital SLR Photography A beginners’ course aimed at those who have a digital SLR camera. Participants will need to bring their own SLR digital camera to each session. Topics covered will include operating the camera in manual mode, optimising the camera settings, exposure, apertures, shutter speeds, downloading images, and improving photographic techniques. Cook your way to a healthier lifestyle This is the time of year when we all need to be cutting back on our food and loosening our beltsliterally. Try our new course on healthier eating, designed to make you feel and look better and to encourage a new lifestyle for you and all the family by cooking these delicious, and nutritious dishes. Our dishes will be focusing on less carbohydrates but incorporating more complex carbohydrates to encourage weight loss and a new way of eating. Learn how to use more vegetables, lentils, pulses and quinoa in your diet without noticing…. Eat your way to a new you.

Fun with Painting & Drawing

Suitable for absolute beginners and those with more experience. Looking at still life, life and landscape drawing using charcoal, pencil, pastel, sanguine, graphite, pen and wash, acrylic and oil. Cook your way around the Mediterranean

Do you fancy yourself near a beach on the Costa del Sol, tucking into a delicious bowl of paella? Or coasting on a yacht off the coast of Italy eating your own pasta dishes, or savouring galaktoboureko after dinner in Greece? Well this is the cooking cruise for you. Dishes from Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and Portugal, all waiting for you to discover. Ref LOVE TO SING?

The Glee Singers is a mixed voice choir with varying musical ability. Our talented young conductor, Lydia Pugh teaches a diverse repertoire including musicals, popular songs and classics. Whilst an ability to read music is not essential, you may be asked to sing to Lydia to determine your vocal range. We meet on Mondays at Les Ozouets campus 7.15 9.15pm. Our main concert is a charity fund-raising event at St James in December. Bake and decorate a naked cake

A simple two-week cake course, showing you and explaining how to produce a perfect naked cake. You will be shown how to decorate it with simple styles and produce a perfect replica of a naked wedding cake. Ref

Fabric, Textiles & Furniture Sewing & Alterations Part 2

Maritime Diesel Engines

This course deals with mainly small diesels but also covers the principles of larger engines. This is a ‘hands-on’ basic skills session and suitable for anyone wishing to learn about troubleshooting, repair and servicing of these units. This course leads to the Short Range Certificate (including the latest digital requirements within the new Global Maritime Distress & Safety System requirements). Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society Orchestra The GCOS Orchestra comprises advanced and experienced players who meet just prior to a society concert. The orchestra accompanies the choir in large choral works as well as performing a variety of orchestral works at the concerts. Primarily concerned with wooden furniture, however, the programme may include some basic upholstery and recovering of furniture. A workshop course concerned with the reupholstery of small seats which can be taken to the class (no storage available) whether foam, stuffed hair or sprung, and the re-caning or re-seating of cane and rush chairs. British Sign Language BSL (BSL 101, 102 & 103)

These courses will be useful for anyone wishing to learn the basics of sign language in order to communicate with people who are deaf or have hearing impairments. BSL courses are of a modular format. The Level 1 Award comprises three units: BSL101 - Introduction to BSL; BSL102 - Conversational BSL; BSL103 - BSL at school, college or work. Assessment will be held in each unit as required and on completion and assessment of the three modules, successful students will receive the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. A handbook will be available on the first evening of the course (approx. £8.00). Workshop days may be arranged which will involve the payment of an additional fee.
