Introduction Introduction from Louise Misselke Principal The College is proud to offer a wide range of qualifications to around 5,000 learners. We are committed to providing them with the best resources to help them develop their learning and skills, whether they are looking to move into further learning, Higher Education, into a different area of the workplace, improve their basic English and Maths skills, or gain further skills to help them in supporting their family. Working closely with local businesses, we regularly review our offering to ensure the courses we are running meet the needs of local employers and satisfy those of our learners. This brochure focuses on the part-time courses we run, and is intended to sit alongside our well-established Community Learning (Adult Education) brochure. Enrolment Information Applying for a Part-Time Course If you are interested in finding out more about a course in this brochure, in the first instance please contact the relevant Curriculum Support Assistant. They will discuss your requirements, and talk to you about your existing qualifications and any entry criteria. Once you are agreed on the course you will apply for, you will be sent an application form (we hope students will be able to apply via the website soon). Your application will then be considered and once you have been enrolled you will be invoiced for the course fee.

Creative & Digital Arts The Creative Digital Arts Faculty brings together a range of public facing and customer focused service industries, such as the Creative & Digital Arts sector, Performance, Hair & Beauty, Catering & Hospitality, and Retail skills. The common thread through all of these disciplines is they operate in a public arena, working to provide audiences and customers with enjoyable experiences. The faculty enrols full-time apprentices in part-time vocational accredited courses in Retail, Beauty & Holistic Therapies and Food Hygiene detailed in this brochure, and in Performing Arts which are published in the Adult & Community Education brochure (published on 20 August 2016). Hair & Beauty NVQ Part-time Diploma in Barbering Level 2 The qualification is very practical and provides the skills and working knowledge to work as a barber. The course is aimed at stylists who already have an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. By completing the programme you will have the skills that will enable you to work as a barber or to offer men’s hairdressing services in this ever developing industry. The units covered include cut hair using basic barbering techniques – including neck line and outline shapes; cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques – tapered beard line, outlined beard and moustache shapes; dry and finish men’s hair – various styling techniques and finishing looks using a wide range of products; change men’s hair colour. After successfully completing this course you will be able to progress onto our NVQ Level 3 course in Barbering.

NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing This two-year course is aimed at beginners, and will cover the following: advise and consult with clients; shampoo and condition hair and scalp; style hair using drying techniques; cut hair using basic techniques; perm and neutralise hair; change hair colour using basic techniques; fulfil salon reception duties; develop and maintain effective teamwork and relationships; support the health, safety and security of the salon environment; cut hair using barbering techniques.

Business ICSA - International Finance & Administration Qualifications The ICSA Level 4 International Finance and Administration suite of qualifications is a Foundation qualification aimed at administrators in the offshore financial services sector. There are no formal entry requirements, although candidates should be in a relevant occupation. Achieve an Award by studying eight core modules and work towards the full Certificate by studying additional specialist modules.

ICSA - Diploma in Offshore Finance and Administration The ICSA Diploma in Offshore Finance and Administration at Level 5 is designed for those with experience of the offshore industry, such as administrators in junior supervisory roles, who wish to develop their knowledge further. Four modules make up the full qualification, each assessed by a written examination.

CIW Web Foundations Associate This course will give you a unique understanding of internet business, data networking and web site design. You will also learn about Internet connection methods, Internet protocols, the Domain Name System (DNS), cloud computing and mobile devices, develop web sites, and study the functions, features and technologies associated with internet services, such as cloud computing and bring Your Own Device (BYOD). No prior experience is necessary.

CIW Web Design Specialist This course will help you to develop the skills necessary to specialise in web site design, including Web Site Development Essentials, Web Design Elements, Advanced Web Technologies. No previous courses or certifications are required.

CIW Advanced HTML5 & CSS3 Specialist The CIW Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 Specialist course tests essential HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS3) and JavaScript knowledge. You will create web pages using the HTML5 structure elements, embed video and audio, and develop cross-browser user-input forms. You will also use CSS3 to position and format content, and to create effects such as transformations, transitions and animation. Some knowledge of basic HTML5 and CSS3 is required.

Oracle Java SE 8 Programmer Associate This course introduces object-orientated programming using Java. You will learn the basics of Java languages including creating classes and objects, overview of inheritance and polymorphism. No prior experience in programming is required.

Mandarin For the second year we are delighted to be able to offer classes in Mandarin language and culture at two levels to support local professionals in gaining an understanding and help them develop business opportunities between companies in Guernsey and China. ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) Our classes are for students who do not have English as their first language and who would like to study or continue their studies in the English language.The courses are available at a number of levels and range from beginners to advanced, subject to demand. You will need to be assessed before attending classes. We will be holding an enrolment evening on Monday 5 September from 6.00pm - 8.00 pm when you will carry out a short diagnostic test and talk to one of our tutors. You will then be offered a place on a suitable course. There is no need to book, just come along on the evening. 3D Modelling SketchUp The basic course is designed as an introduction to creating 3D models using Trimble SketchUp. It includes creating basic shapes using commands, how models are organised and applying textures and creating animations. College certificate issued.

AutoDesk Revit Fundamentals This course covers the basics of Building Information Modeling using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2015. This well-established software has become commonly used within the construction industry and is used to reduce design time and also make changes to designs far more efficient. It is aimed at professionals wanting to increase their portfolio of software skills, new Revit Architecture users and those wanting to progress from AutoCAD to Revit and Building Information Modeling software.

AutoDesk Revit Advanced Aimed at those who are involved in architecture, construction and building project management, this course provides anyone in these fields with essential and advanced skills required to implement BIM software into the workplace and organisation workflow. City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Awards in Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-cutting Timber using a Chainsaw This qualification is about the maintenance of a chainsaw and sharpening of a cutting system used in aerial and ground work; cross-cutting trees using a chainsaw at ground level. Operations will include cross-cutting timber under tension in the form of fallen branches, tops, tree sections, horizontal stems, or any timber in a similar situation. Timber under low and moderate tension is covered but not timber under extreme tensions found, for example, in windblown trees.

City and Guilds Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Suitable for those who are responsible for, or looking to start a career in, health & safety, relevant for working in any industry. This course provides essential occupational health & safety knowledge and skills, such as computing with assessments, introducing procedures, and promoting a culture of health & safety in the workplace.

Care, Health, Public Services & Sport Our Faculty encompasses courses in Health and Social Care, Early Years, an introduction to Public Services, and Sport. There has never been such an exciting time to enter the sector, and our courses will help develop your practical skills and professional qualifications to enable you to participate in these fields, or help you progress. Our Health and Social Care provision offers the qualifications you will need to work and start to develop a career in this rewarding area in a variety of working environments. National changes in the child care sector are woven into our courses. We have recently launched our Introduction to Public Services course which is a platform to help prepare and assist you in seeking entry into one of the Emergency Services in Guernsey. Health & Social Care Cache Level 2 Certificate in Working in the Health Sector This course is aimed at those interested in a career in the health sector or who already work or volunteer in this area, including nursing, as a carer, social or youth work, early years teaching.There is the potential to progress to Cache Level 3 Award in Health and Social Care.

Cache Level 3 Award in Health and Social Care This course is designed for those who have substantial experience working in the health and social care sector and are interested in furthering their career. This course would also be suitable for those interested in a progression route into higher education. Learners must be at least 16 years old and should have four or five GSCEs grade C including maths and English Language, or a Level 2 qualification in a health and social care related subject. You will study three core subjects - equality, diversity and rights in health and social care, human growth and development, and safeguarding in health and social care. 14

Early Years Early Years Care and Education Foundation Degree (FdA) This qualification is offered in collaboration with the University of Brighton to cater for the growing demand nationally and the government’s commitment to transforming the workforce. Applicants must be working within an early years/childcare setting (generally for at least two years), with at least 12 hours of activity focused time with children per week, having achieved core GCSE grades in maths and English, completed A Levels, NVQ Level 3 in Childcare, Cache L3 or an HE Access course. Cache Level 3 Early Years Educator For mature students holding a Level 2 Childcare qualification and who are working, or intend to work, with children and young people. It is expected that you will already work in a setting where children’s care, learning and development are the main purpose. This QCF qualification is to prepare learners to become Early Years Educators enabling them to work with children from birth to five years and gain knowledge of children aged five to seven years. Cache Level 3 Part Time Award in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Aimed at those volunteering* or working in a school for at least six hours a week and who have had more than two years’ experience. KS 1 and above can be in Primary or Secondary Education in the role of an LSA/ TA paid employment. The qualification is made up of 4 units: CYP3.1/CYP 3.3/TDA 3.2 & TDA 3.1, which are knowledge based and will be covered via varied assessment methods (assignments, reflective account, work product and professional discussion). Cache Level 3 Part Time Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools This course is aimed at students who have just completed the Level 3 Award and wish to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate to give them a full licence to practice in a school as an LSA or TA (fully recognised in the UK to work in schools). In addition to the monthly workshops, students will be assessed via two planned observations across two full mornings in school, a professional discussion to capture knowledge and understanding/reflection on practice, and one written assignment. One to one tutorials with your assessor and tutor will be available throughout the course to enable you to build a good relationship with them.

Level 2 Supported Teaching and Learning in Schools The course is designed to give parents or people looking for a career as a Learning Support Assistant in a school a wonderful opportunity to volunteer in a school one day a week and gain the knowledge and skills required to practice at Level 2. It gives an insight into early education and whether a career in school is for you, and would assist if applying for positions in Education and/or gaining your Level 3 Qualification at a later date. Level 2 - Speaking, listening and communication - make a range of contributions to discussions in a range of contexts, including those which are unfamiliar, and make effective presentations; Reading - select, read, understand and compare texts and use them to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions; Writing - write a range of texts, including extended written documents, communication information, ideas and opinions, effectively and persuasively. Learning, Coaching & Assessment City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) This course replicates PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Sector). It prepares learners for teaching in a wide range of contexts and does not require learners to be teaching while studying the programme. Achieving the qualification will provide sufficient evidence that an individual has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to teach or train in the further education and skills sector. This is a classroom-based pogramme. All learners will have access to support and resources to help them complete the programme. The course will be made up of the following units: understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships; understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches; and understanding assessment.

The Certificate in Education

A formal qualification for those teaching (or planning to teach) in the lifelong learning sector, the Certificate in Education course is taught in conjunction with The University of Brighton. It includes six modules which cover advanced teaching practice, contemporary issues in education and training, reflective practice and action research. The course works well for education professionals wishing to develop their practice alongside their teaching. Candidates will be expected to teach for at least 50 hours per year within post compulsory education or training or the lifelong learning sector. Teaching, Assessment and Quality Assurance (TAQA) Candidates will complete a skills scan as part of the initial assessment process to determine which qualification is appropriate. Candidates will be allocated an assessor who will work with them to complete the qualification. Start dates are flexible and no formal weekly attendance is required.

TAQA Level 3 Level 3 provides a pathway for learners to understand assessment and, if required, qualify as an assessor. Learners who wish to achieve these units could be assessing competence or non-competence based learning, knowledge or skills. They will select the units and qualifications that meet the requirements of what they are assessing. There are three Awards and a Certificate available at Level 3: Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment This is a knowledge-only award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising. Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment This is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation/examining work products/oral questioning and discussion/use of witnesses/ learner statements/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement This is for practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments/skills tests/oral and written questions/ assignments/projects/case studies/RPL.
