568: Pre-Castro Cuban Cigars.

Flor de F. Farach, sealed box of 100 Farachitos (small cigars), c. 1958. In December, 1983 an unprecedented auction was held of thousands of pre-Fidel Castro Cuban cigars. The sale was conducted at New York City's prestigious Park Avenue Armory with the permission of the U.S. State Department. It was the first time the U.S. Government lifted the Embargo placed on Cuban products. We are not aware that any other Cuban products have legally been allowed into the U.S. since the 1983 auction and hence believe that the cigars that were sold more than 35 years ago were indeed the only Cuban products to be allowed into the U.S. since Castro's takeover in 1959. Original wooden Cuban cigar box, 4" x 4' x 14", with several intact gold-printed seals and the official seal of the Republic de Cuba. "Todo Hecho a Mano, Habana" impressed into the wood. The box contains 20 smaller boxes each containing five Farachitos. The Farachitos are 3.25" long. There are 100 Farachitos in all. This particular box is number 190282 Series G. An American gentleman had inherited this collection of Cuban cigars which had been stored in Spain by a relative. Unable to import the cigars into the U.S. because of the Embargo, the American went to the auction house which in turn presented the situation to the State Department. The argument was that proceeds from the sale of the cigars would stay in the U.S. and not impact the Cuban economy. The State Department agreed and the Embargo was lifted this one time for the auction. The cigars were made in Havana (Habana) by Farach, a brand unknown in the U.S. but well-regarded in Europe. The news of the 1983 auction appeared on the front page of the New York Times which reported that consistently the boxes of cigars fetched thousands of dollars which equated to individual cigars going for hundreds of dollars each! We have been present when, over the years, cigars from that auction have been smoked. The consistent reaction is that the qualities that allowed pre-Castro Cubans to be considered the "gold standard" upon which all other cigars are judged have been retained through the decades. 579A: Pre-Castro Cuban Cigars.

Flor de F. Farach, sealed box of 100 Farachitos (small cigars), c. 1958. In December, 1983 an unprecedented auction was held of thousands of pre-Fidel Castro Cuban cigars. The sale was conducted at New York City's prestigious Park Avenue Armory with the permission of the U.S. State Department. It was the first time the U.S. Government lifted the Embargo placed on Cuban products. We are not aware that any other Cuban products have legally been allowed into the U.S. since the 1983 auction and hence believe that the cigars that were sold more than 35 years ago were indeed the only Cuban products to be allowed into the U.S. since Castro's takeover in 1959. Original wooden Cuban cigar box, 4" x 4' x 14", with several intact gold-printed seals and the official seal of the Republic de Cuba. "Todo Hecho a Mano, Habana" impressed into the wood. The box contains 20 smaller boxes each containing five Farachitos. The Farachitos are 3.25" long. There are 100 Farachitos in all. This particular box is number 193901 Series A. An American gentleman had inherited this collection of Cuban cigars which had been stored in Spain by a relative. Unable to import the cigars into the U.S. because of the Embargo, the American went to the auction house which in turn presented the situation to the State Department. The argument was that proceeds from the sale of the cigars would stay in the U.S. and not impact the Cuban economy. The State Department agreed and the Embargo was lifted this one time for the auction. The cigars were made in Havana (Habana) by Farach, a brand unknown in the U.S. but well-regarded in Europe. The news of the 1983 auction appeared on the front page of the New York Times which reported that consistently the boxes of cigars fetched thousands of dollars which equated to individual cigars going for hundreds of dollars each! We have been present when, over the years, cigars from that auction have been smoked. The consistent reaction is that the qualities that allowed pre-Castro Cubans to be considered the "gold standard" upon which all other cigars are judged have been retained through the decades.
