About Flamingo Everglades National Park

Flamingo was first settled in 1892, though Tequesta Indians had inhabited the area prior to this settlement. The early settlers sustained themselves by supplying fish, fresh vegetables, and charcoal to Key West. In 1893, when establishing a post office, the settlers named their community “Flamingo,” inspired by the distinctive bird species frequently sighted in the area. Despite not breeding in Florida, flamingos from Cuba and the Bahamas once migrated to the area in significant numbers, a phenomenon last observed in 1902, largely due to intensified poaching in the region.

The early 20th century witnessed a modest boom in Flamingo, driven by speculation that Henry Flagler might extend his Florida East Coast Railway across Florida Bay to Key West. By 1900, approximately 50 families resided in Flamingo, which hosted a Monroe County school. Nearby rookeries, including the famed Cuthbert Rookery, attracted poachers seeking bird plumage for fashionable women’s hats. This predatory practice eventually led to the shooting of early game warden Guy Bradley, who confronted the plume hunters in Flamingo. His death incited public outrage, catalyzing federal legislation to ban the practice.

In 1908, a fish house was established in Flamingo, making fishing the town’s primary occupation. However, by 1910, only three homes remained inhabited. The Ingraham Highway, reaching Flamingo in 1922, remained almost impassable in wet conditions until the National Park Service upgraded it with a gravel surface in the late 1940s. During prohibition, moonshining thrived in Flamingo until government intervention eventually suppressed it.

Following the establishment of the Everglades National Park, the Flamingo population was relocated, with the last residents departing by June 1, 1951. In the latter half of the 20th century, Flamingo housed amenities, including a restaurant and cafe, a gas station, a marina, a store, a gift shop, a campground, and residences for park rangers. In 1959, as part of the Mission 66 project, the two-story Flamingo Lodge opened with 103 rooms, accompanied by 24 cabins. The original restaurant was renovated and transformed into the new Visitors Center and administrative offices.

Unfortunately, most facilities suffered extensive damage or destruction during Hurricane Wilma in 2005, with storm surges reaching up to nine feet. As of March 29, 2009, the lodge and cabins were demolished, with only the marina and store reopening. The gas station remains closed to this day.

Where Is the Everglades and Why Is It Important?

Everglades National Park is situated in the southernmost region of Florida. Spanning 1.5 million acres, it stands as the third-largest National Park in the lower 48 states, surpassed only by Death Valley and Yellowstone. On December 6, 1947, President Harry S. Truman inaugurated the park with a radio speech at Everglade City Airport, highlighting not just its beauty but the fragile ecosystems and diverse wildlife it shelters. Presently, the National Park comprises only 20% of the original Everglades, extending from Miami, Homestead, and Florida City in the east to Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers in the west, reaching northward to Lake Okeechobee. It represents the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. In recognition of its significance, it was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve by 1987, a World Heritage Site in 1979, and an internationally important wetland, distinguishing it as one of only three parks globally to hold all three titles simultaneously.

Visitors can access Everglades National Park through three entrances: the main entrance near Homestead, Florida, a distinctive water entrance in Everglades City, Florida, and the Shark Valley located off Highway 41. The park is renowned for its remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, which flourish across various ecosystems including freshwater sloughs, marl prairies, tropical hammocks, pinelands, cypress, mangrove, coastal lowlands, marine, and estuarine environments, totaling nine distinct ecosystems within a single park.

As you explore all the Everglades has to offer, take a moment to immerse yourself in the surroundings. Witness creatures such as the manatees, often referred to as “sea cows” and bearing a close relation to elephants, alongside the North American crocodile and alligator. This park is the only place in the world where both coexist. Additionally, remember to appreciate the myriad birds and marine species that consider this sanctuary home.

The Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant adheres to a rigorous set of environmental protocols and works diligently with the National Park Service to maintain healthy Green Practices. We go above and beyond to keep our park clean, so we hope our guests will too.

At the Flamingo Lodge, we do not provide stayover services. This enables us to limit bedding, towels, and other amenities that would otherwise require significant water usage.

Our team uses biodegradable paper products and green cleaning supplies as much as possible. For instance, our ‘key holders’ are specially sourced out of vegetable-based inks and recycled paper.

The Flamingo Restaurant’s expert culinary team uses local organic ingredients and sustainable agriculture, when possible, to prepare fresh, creative cuisine.

We are constantly evaluating our procedures and exploring ways to eliminate our footprint because we appreciate the importance of eco-friendliness.

Fun fact:

The American crocodile can be found in south Florida and in parts of the Caribbean. Its alligator cousin has been spotted in various parts of the United States, including North Carolina and Virginia. If you want to see both animals in their habitats, you have to go to Florida — namely, the Everglades National Park.

Florida key limes are descendants of limes native to Asia and were introduced to the New World in the 16th century by Spanish and Portuguese explorers. The lime trees were then imported and established in the Florida Keys and southern Florida in 1839.

The Guy Bradley Visitor Center in Flamingo offers visitor information from park rangers, educational displays, informational brochures, a gift shop, and backcountry permits. Campground facilities, a public boat ramp, a marina store, and hiking and canoeing trails are located near the visitor center.

For inquiries or assistance in booking activities, please visit our expert Guest Services agents at the Flamingo Lodge. We are dedicated to enhancing your experience and guiding you to Flamingo’s best attractions and activities.

The Flamingo Lodge, comprising four eco-friendly container buildings, is nestled along the picturesque Guy Bradley Trail and the Florida Bay. Our facility offers 24 rooms, a welcoming lobby with direct access to the restaurant and bar, and three accommodation options to cater to your preferences:

• A cozy studio featuring a queen bed.

• A one-bedroom suite furnished with a queen bed and a full pull-out sofa.

• A spacious two-bedroom suite equipped with a queen bed, a king bed, and a double pull-out sofa.

All of our rooms overlook the Florida Bay and are equipped with kitchenettes, ceiling fans, and balconies. Each of our lodge buildings are named after birds within the Everglades National Park:

• Tern (building one)

• Spoonbill (building two)

• Heron (building three)

• Kingfisher (building four)

Please note: Our rooms provide WiFi access, but TVs and room phones are excluded. Mobile devices may function if paired with WiFi calling or if connected to the AT&T network. Meals are not included in the lodge room booking.

GUEST PARKING

All of our lodge parking is on a first come first served basis. Additional parking is available across from the Lodge and will also be on a first come first served basis. All vehicles in the Lodge parking lot must have a parking pass visible from the windshield.

Lodge guests that have additional vehicles must have them registered at the Front Desk at the time of check-in. Make sure you have all vehicle information with you from additional vehicles, so they receive a parking pass as well.

Additional parking is available at the Flamingo Visitors Center parking lot. It is only a short walk along the Guy Bradley Trail back to the Lodge.

If you have a boat and/or trailer there are limited spaces available at the Lodge. Trailer parking is on a first come first served basis and will need to be registered with the Front Desk. If spots are full, additional parking is available at either the Flamingo Visitors Center parking lot or the Boat Ramp Parking lots. It is a short walk along the Guy Bradley Trail back to the Lodge. Trailer parking is not permitted at the Marina Store parking lot.

All vehicles that are in violation will be reported to National Park Service law enforcement.

*Caution: Parking under the lodge buildings has a maximum clearance of 6’11”

To ensure that all guests have a peaceful experience, quiet time is required from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. within the Everglades National Park and at Flamingo. Please be aware of your neighbors’ expectations and needs for a quiet, retreat-like atmosphere while staying here. Any noise complaints will be reported to National Park Service law enforcement. Our front desk can help you with any messages, photocopies, or faxes you might need to send or receive.

• Check-in time: 4:00 p.m.

• Check-out time: 11:00 a.m.

• Guests will be charged a half day rate for checking-out beyond : 11:00 a.m.

• Guests are responsible for any damage, unnecessary destruction, breakage, or misuse of property.

GUEST AMENITIES

There are coffee makers in each guest room. Coffee and a variety of hot tea bags are provided with appropriate condiments. Ironing boards and irons are available upon request on a first come first serve basis. A hair dryer is in the bathroom, and blanket, sheets, and pillows for each pull out sofa are located in the square benches in the living room. All kitchenettes are equipped with stoneware, silverware, and cookware as well as dish soap for the sink and dishwasher tabs for the dishwasher.

NON-SMOKING ROOMS

All rooms at The Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant are non-smoking rooms. A fee of $250 will be charged if there is smoking in the rooms, balconies, or walkways of the lodge. Please note that these are federal buildings and if you do smoke, it must be 25-feet from any door, window, or airway.

HOUSEKEEPING

We are proud to be an eco-friendly lodge. If you are staying two nights, there will be no stayover service on the second day of your stay. This is a concerted effort to be more sustainable and to wisely steward our natural resources. You may request stayover service for a multi-night stay and our diligent housekeepers will service your room prior to 5:00 p.m. Be sure to remove the privacy card if you would like your room to be serviced.

• Please note that there is no cleaning or cooking of fish allowed in the lodge rooms. A fee of $250 will be assessed.

• All rooms are non-smoking a fee of $250 will be assessed.

• A $250 fee will be assessed for above and beyond normal regular cleaning.

RECYCLING

Trash receptacles and Recycling are located in front of each lodge building. Provided in each Lodge room are trash cans, and our pickup facility sorts out the non-recyclables out of the trash.

VALUABLES

Please keep your valuables with you at all times and do not leave items unattended in your vehicle. Please lock the windows and doors whenever you leave your room.

LOST AND FOUND

Articles left behind in guest rooms will be held for 24-hours before they are sent to the National Park Service. Before checking out, please check your room to be sure you have not left any personal belongings.

TELEVISIONS & TELEPHONES

In keeping with the retreat-like atmosphere of Everglades National Park, the Flamingo Lodge has no televisions or telephones provided in the rooms. The Front Desk does have a phone that can be used. However, there is WiFi and if you have WiFi calling you can make a call from your mobile device or if you have AT&T as your mobile provider, you will have service. If there is an emergency, dial 911.

ICE

Ice can be purchased at the Marina Store in either a seven pound or a 16-pound bag. There is no ice machine located at the Lodge.

BARBEQUES

There are three barbeque/grilling areas at the Lodge located between each building and charcoal can be purchased at the front desk or at the Marina Store.

DINING SERVICES

Our Restaurant and Bar are located in the Main Lodge. The Restaurant at Flamingo serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

MAINTENANCE SERVICES

Each room is equipped with central air conditioning and is regulated by a thermostat. The rooms also have ceiling fans. Should you have any malfunction issues report to the front desk, we will have a member of our maintenance staff assist you. For any problem involving plumbing, electrical or air conditioning please contact the front desk at (239) 695-1095 Ext. 101.

We have maps of the hiking trails at the front desk and at the Marina Store. Our front desk can answer any general questions. Park rangers are available at the Visitors Center and can be reached by phone at (239) 695-2945.

• Winter Hours (Nov. 1 – April 30) • 6:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m., Daily

TRAILS & HIKING

No collecting of park wood, animals, rocks, sand or shells is allowed. Please walk on paved areas or trails only.

The Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant adheres to a rigorous set of environmental protocols and works diligently with the National Park Service to maintain healthy green practices. We go above and beyond to keep our park clean, so we hope our guests will too.

At the Flamingo Lodge, we do not provide stayover services. This enables us to limit bedding, towels, and other amenities that would otherwise require significant water usage.

Our team uses biodegradable paper products and green cleaning supplies as much as possible. For instance, our ‘key holders’ are specially sourced out of vegetable-based inks and recycled paper.

The Flamingo Restaurant’s expert culinary team uses local organic ingredients and sustainable agriculture, when possible, to prepare fresh, creative cuisine.

We’re constantly evaluating our procedures and exploring ways to eliminate our footprint because we appreciate the importance of ecofriendliness.

Everglades National Park Trails & Wildlife

HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS

The Front Desk can provide a map for hiking and biking trails.

SNAKE BIGHT • 1.8 MILES ONE WAY

Don’t let the name deter you! In this play on words, a “bight” is actually a bay (Snake Bight) within a larger bay (Florida Bay). Enter another world as you travel through a tropical hardwood hammock, with dozens of tropical tree species. Bird watching may be good from the boardwalk at the end of trail.

ROWDY BEND • 2.6 MILES ONE WAY

Explore an overgrown old roadbed through shady buttonwoods and open costal prairie. This is an opportunity for good woodland bird watching. Combine this trail with the Main Park Road (use caution!) and the Snake Bight Trail for a 12.6-mile round trip bike ride from the Flamingo Visitors Center.

CHRISTIAN POINT • 1.6 MILES ONE WAY

Wander a rustic path through a wide diversity of habitats. The trail begins in dense mangroves and buttonwoods full of bromeliads. Next, investigate the unusual, salt-loving vegetation of open coastal prairie. Dead buttonwood snags interrupt these expanses that were shaped by hurricanes. Finally, you’ll end up along the shores of Snake Bight, best viewed near lowed tide for birds. Caution – this trail is flooded majority of the year.

ECO POND • HALF MILE LOOP

Due to the salt intrusion from storm surges during the hurricane season of 2005, Eco Pond is in a state of change. Wading birds, shorebirds and occasional crocodiles can be seen.

GUY BRADLEY • 1 MILE TO CAMPGROUND AMPHITHEATER

Mingle with a variety of birds and butterflies, as you amble along the shore of Florida Bay. Old pier pilings are a reminder that Flamingo was once a small village. The trail was named for the Audubon warden Guy Bradley, murdered in 1905 by plume hunters while trying to protect a bird rookery in Florida Bay. This is a scenic shortcut between the campground day-use and the Visitors Center.

COASTAL PRAIRIE • 6 MILES ONE WAY

Step back in time as you walk this old road once used by cotton pickers and fisherman. Open prairies of succulent coastal plants dotted with shady buttonwoods surround you as you journey toward the shore of Florida Bay. Begin at the rear of Loop “C” in the campground. A wilderness permit is required for camping at Clubhouse Beach.

The Wildlife at Flamingo Everglades

Flamingo Everglades is one of the best places in the world to see a variety of wildlife. You’ll see manatees, crocodiles, alligators, and many other species of birds during your visit. We recommend visiting during Summer when temperatures are warmer and more animals can be seen basking in the sun.

Most of the wildlife is out and about during the summer months, which means you’ll have a better chance of spotting dolphins, crocodiles, alligators and migratory birds.

MIGRATORY BIRDS

Migratory birds are a big part of Flamingo’s wildlife. They come from as far as Canada and Central America, and can be seen in the park year-round.

Some species include ducks, geese and shorebirds such as plovers (like the American Oystercatcher) or sandpipers (such as the Least Sandpiper). A few even migrate here during their winter break from breeding season. Migratory birds are an integral part of our ecosystem: they help spread seeds across continents by eating them; they keep insect populations in check; they provide food for larger animals like manatees; and some even pollinate plants that produce fruit we love to eat.

REPTILES

The Everglades teem with diverse reptilian life, most notably the American Alligator, snakes, and turtles. Additionally, introduced from Florida’s exotic pet trade, Nile Crocodiles inhabit the park’s freshwater lakes. This makes the Everglades a singular location globally where both crocodiles and alligators coexist harmoniously. We invite you to explore and appreciate the multifaceted reptile population in this unique habitat.

DOLPHINS

Dolphins, celebrated for their intelligence and sociable nature, frequently inhabit the waters of the Everglades. These vibrant creatures form groups called pods, and the park serves as home to several species of dolphins, including the prevalent Bottlenose Dolphin. Predominantly found in the Everglades, this species thrives in both fresh and saltwater environments throughout Florida. Visitors may also encounter the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin, a slightly smaller species that shares similar markings to the Bottlenose.
