Different colors mean different sectorizations. Although in outdoor room, the space could still be divided to some extent. However, they are not divided completely. In fact, the upper layer is the extension of the bottom layer.

Different layers are necessary part of the structure. However, they also divide various space for people to utilize. In fact, these different spaces provide more possibilities of people’s activities.

VIENNA COLONIES Blossom Gothic

Aug.-Dec. 2013 Penndesign 601 Studio

In this semester, I tried to use the accumulation process to make buildings. That is a exaggerate way

to show the process. Every elements of the building from the apartment, the ceilings, the floors, the windows, the columns and everything else is composed by only one single unit. Using different scales and shapes of one family, we keep the same language from start to end. The images in the middle part illustrates clearly how I develop the accumulation language and make it the while building. It may be hard to recognize the initial unit, like everything in the world.

At the same time, I tried to utilize the gothic language in the process of accumulation. However, when designing the building, we focused on the daily life of typical Vienna residents. Though Gothic may sometimes imply dark atmosphere, I tried carefully to make the daylight best in everything apartment. That’s why I tried the rotation motion to aggregate different layers to adjust the sunlight in every room. When dividing different apartment in one floor, sunlight control is also taken into considerations. Small apartments are always located on the peripheral zone of the building to get sunlight. Also, hollow cube go through the whole building to increase the light effects.

My project taps into the gothic obsession about linear spatial

conditions which connect into bundles to differentiate spaces. The main difference is the direction of this linear conditions. The gothic is all about vertical splicing and bundling of space. My project turns this behavior into the horizontal in order to organize the floors of the apartment building. The swelling and thinning out of the bundling provides multiple opportunities to subdivide the horizon of your building, providing variation in the heights of the floors. The extreme condition being spaces which are not per se walkable but still are used as spatial pockets providing opportunities for programmatic aspects of the apartments (sleeping rooms etc..)

Everything of the world is generated or existing as a way

Unit development

of accumulation or aggregation. We could easily decompose them into smaller parts and even tiny units like cells, atoms, and so on. Sometimes we could not sense the process or the phenomenon, but, actually, it is a universal procedure to produce things. Through the process of aggregation, we could make extraordinary various kinds of things. Nature tells us not only the procedure is similar. Sometimes, we could even perceive that kind of procedure. From the example of barnacles, we see units getting together with similar shapes of different scales. It is a hint of the formation process. However, most of the case, we could not sense the procedure.

INFORMATION ALARMING Public Engagement Jan.-Apr. 2013 Penndesign 502 Studio

Christopher Alexander pinpointed in the article “A City is Not a Tree, the influence of a building to its surrounding is much more complex and profound than we think. We should not only consider the site area, but also the surroundings, the inside and the outside. We should not only care about the current, but also forecast the future. We should not only study the static conditions, but should also take into accounts the dynamic situations. The influences from different aspects are not discrete from each other but like interacting with each other. The logic structures are not always linear.

When mapping the site, I find there are 2 main elements we should be aware. One is the site is quite close to the river and the other is there is a big factory generating air pollution called Veolia Energy. River is vital to our site because itself is a dynamic system. The water levels could have ups and downs and the water qualities could be good or bad. The factory comes into notice with the reason that it can be combined with other conditions like climate, wind directions to generate problems like air pollutions, noise and so on.
