23 FEV—09 JUN’ 19 Em fevereiro de 2019, num contexto sociopolítico que mais do que em nenhuma outra era da história moderna da humanidade parece colocar insidiosamente em causa os valores da diversidade ecológica e humana, inaugura o ciclo sonhado, dedicado ao Pensamento Ameríndio.

De facto, é a antecipação de uma certa consciência do fim que parece ligar discursos artísticos que pareciam distantes e dissonantes uns dos outros. Reúnem-se no tempo anacrónico e imponderável do museu para celebrar a beleza do encontro e a vitalidade do sopro.

In February 2019, we will inaugurate a longawaited cycle dedicated to Amerindian Thought.

This occurs in a socio-political context that insidiously seems to be placing the values of ecological and human diversity into question, to a greater extent than any other era of modern human history. In fact, this cycle anticipates a certain awareness of finitude that seems to link artistic discourses which previously seemed dissonant and far apart. These discourses are brought together in the imponderable and anachronistic time of the museum, to celebrate the beauty of the encounter and the vitality of the breath of life.

RESGATAR A DIVERSIDADE

Por vezes, quando julgamos ter chegado o fim de algo, presenciamos um milagre. Refiro-me às imagens captadas furtivamente no Quénia, e que recentemente foram divulgadas, de um belo leopardo negro, espécie que se acreditava estar extinta há mais de cem anos.

Diversidade é um conceito complexo e problemático na medida em que convoca muitos campos do pensamento – a política, o multiculturalismo, a cultura, a religião, a biologia, a ecologia, a genética, entre outros – e que foi, em muitos aspetos, instrumentalizado em benefício de determinadas ideologias, nomeadamente identitárias.

Contudo, na sua significação mais essencial remete para um forte sentido de autopreservação (ecológica) e de caridade (religiosa). Os seres humanos vivem preocupados com a perda de diversidade, nomeadamente do mundo natural e animal – projetamo-nos nos outros e afirmamos a nossa identidade a partir da diferença e da diversidade. Só assim se compreende que rejubilemos quando descobrimos que uma espécie não está extinta e que vivamos angustiados com a vulnerabilidade de determinados grupos étnicos, de determinadas minorias ou de ecossistemas vizinhos ou distantes de nós.

Em rigor, nenhum outro pensamento como o artístico ou o poético contribuíram para a articulação, radicalmente livre e autónoma, da diversidade enquanto qualidade intrínseca do pensamento e da criação. Por essa razão, e porque a criação artística mantém uma intensa ligação à realidade, convocámos – numa época em que existe um sentimento generalizado de que a nossa sobrevivência como espécie e as condições de vida no planeta em que nos foi dado o privilégio de viver estão mais do que em nenhuma outra era em risco – a diversidade enquanto conceito operante e aglutinador de toda a nossa programação de 2019.

Refletiremos, discutiremos, apresentaremos ideias, objetos, sonoridades, imagens de diferentes latitudes e tempos, perscrutaremos os mundos animal e vegetal na forma como nos constituímos a partir deles e como deles somos mais ou menos distantes.

Em suma, pensar as múltiplas existências do(s) ser(es) no(s) mundo(s), a partir de diferentes cosmogonias, crenças, visões, sonhos e poéticas – como forças conduzidas consciente e inconscientemente num espaço-tempo e num lugar aberto a todas as combinações e relações por esdrúxulas e excêntricas que possam parecer.

RESCUING DIVERSITY

Sometimes, just when it seems that something is about to end, we witness a miracle. I’m referring to the recently released images, shot furtively in Kenya, of a beautiful black leopard, a species that was believed to have become extinct over a hundred years ago.

Diversity is a complex and problematic concept, which combines many fields of thought - politics, multiculturalism, culture, religion, biology, ecology, genetics, among others. It has also been instrumentalised in many respects to the benefit of certain ideologies, in particular those related to issues of identity.

However, in its essence, diversity refers to a strong sense of (ecological) self-preservation and (religious) charity. Human beings are concerned with the loss of diversity, especially of the natural and animal world, since we project ourselves through our relationship with others and affirm our identity on the basis of difference and diversity. This is the only way to understand our sense of joy when we discover that a certain species is not extinct, or our concern in relation to the vulnerability of nearby or remote ethnic groups, minorities or ecosystems.

In fact, artistic and poetic ideas have made an unparalleled contributed to a radically free and autonomous articulation of diversity as an intrinsic quality of thinking and creation. For this reason, and because artistic creation maintains an intense connection with reality, we have chosen diversity as the operational and umbrella concept of our entire 2019 programme, at a time of widespread concern that our survival as a species and the conditions of life on the planet currently face greater peril than at any other time in human history.

Through reflection, discussion and by presenting ideas, objects, sounds, images from different latitudes and times, we will examine the animal and vegetable worlds, from the perspective of how we are constituted, and how we are more or less distant from them.

In short, we aim to think about the multiple existences of being (s) in the world(s), based on different cosmogonies, beliefs, visions, dreams and poetics - as forces that are consciously and unconsciously directed in a space-time, and in a place, that is open to all combinations and relationships, however strange or eccentric they may seem.

Manuel Rosa (Beja, 1953) é um dos mais singulares e originais escultores surgidos na década de 1980 em Portugal, cujo percurso foi perdendo gradualmente intensidade em benefício do importante trabalho que há décadas desenvolve enquanto editor.

Depois de um longo interregno sem produzir novos trabalhos, apresentou um amplo panorama de obras antigas e novas na exposição antológica que, em 2018, esteve patente na Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, em Lisboa. Agora, abre uma clareira no denso espaço da coleção permanente, com peças de grande e pequena escala, em gesso, bronze ou areia de fundição, várias delas produzidas para esta exposição.

O vocabulário de Manuel Rosa é amplo em termos formais, temáticos e materiais. É um trabalho que, entre referências à escultura primitiva e pré-clássica, à Arte Povera e à geração de escultores britânicos surgida nos anos 80 do século passado, se destacou pela forma como construiu um forte sentimento de intemporalidade, por um lado, e uma intensa ligação à terra e aos materiais do lugar, por outro.

Reiterando, por um lado, arquétipos poderosos – a casa, o barco, o corpo humano –, e, por outro, objetos sem aura, de uso corrente ou índole industrial – cabaças, bolas, baterias de automóvel –, o artista opera, com desconcertante liberdade processual, uma ininterrupta circulação entre energia e forma, figura e sombra, cheio e vazio, totalidade e fragmento, pequena e grande escala, o efémero e o perene.

A intervenção que concebeu para o espaço da coleção permanente do CIAJG dialoga com algumas das peças mais marcantes em exposição ou em depósito – sejam peças em terracota da coleção pré-colombiana, sejam os moldes de partes do corpo humano, para ex-votos em cera oriundos do património religioso e popular da cidade de Guimarães. Convoca a figura humana, que se declina em precário equilíbrio entre forma e informe, surgindo da matéria e confundindo-se com ela, num movimento genésico.

Mãos, bocas, concavidades, espaços crípticos que guardam os segredos da história oral, antes da escrita, aquela não tem forma e que não é fixada nos manuais oficiais.

CLEARING

Manuel Rosa (Beja, 1953) is one of the most unique and original sculptors to have emerged in the 1980s in Portugal. His career gradually lost intensity as a result of the important work he has developed over recent decades as a book publisher.

After a long interregnum without producing any new works, in 2018 he presented a broad range of old and new works in the anthological exhibition in the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA) in Lisbon. His works will now occupy a central area in the dense space of the CIAJG’s permanent collection, including large and small scale works in cast plaster, bronze or sand, several of which were produced specifically for this exhibition.

In formal, thematic and material terms, Manuel Rosa uses a broad artistic vocabulary. His work includes references to primitive and pre-classical sculpture, Arte Povera and the generation of British sculptors that emerged in the 1980s.

It stands out for its strong feeling of timelessness, on the one hand, and intense connection to the land and local materials, on the other.

With disconcerting procedural freedom, he reiterates powerful archetypes – such as the house, boat, human body – together with everyday or industrial objects that have no specific aura – such

as gourds, balls or car batteries. In this manner he traces an uninterrupted movement between energy and form, figure and shadow, wholeness and void, totality and fragment, small and large scale, ephemeral and perennial.

The intervention he has conceived for the space of the CIAJG's permanent collection establishes a dialogue with some of the most outstanding works on display or in storage - whether terracotta items from the pre-Columbian collection, or moulds of wax ex-voto offerings that depict different parts of the human body, derived from the religious and popular heritage of the city of Guimarães.

He makes reference to the human figure, declined in a precarious balance between form and shapelesness, emerging from matter and confused with it, in a genetic movement.

Hands, mouths, concavities, cryptic spaces that store the secrets of oral history, dating back to before the invention of writing, which is shapeless and not set down in official manuals.

Eduardo Viveiros de Castro é reconhecido internacionalmente como um dos ma is importa ntes a ntropólogos da a tualidade. Com a teoria do perspectivismo ameríndio, desenvolvida a partir de meados da década de 1990, passou a ter notável influência em outros campos do conhecimento – na estética, na teoria literária, na filosofia política, na filosofia do direito e talvez sobretudo na prática artística. O que poucos de seus leitores sabem é que Viveiros de Castro, antes de ser antropólogo, foi fotógrafo, sendo responsável por algumas das imagens mais emblemáticas do artista plástico Hélio Oiticica e do poeta Waly Salomão, assim como pelas fotografias de cena de filmes do cineasta Ivan Cardoso (de quem também foi roteirista). Esta exposição – que já passou por São Paulo, Araraquara e Frankfurt – apresenta pela primeira vez um amplo recorte do trabalho fotográfico de Viveiros de Castro, agrupando cerca de 200 imagens realizadas ao longo de sua atividade como etnólogo junto aos índios Araweté, Kulina, Yanomami e Yawalapíti. Também são exibidas aqui, por meio da reprodução de páginas montadas para o catálogo da primeira versão desta exposição (Sesc São Paulo, 2015), algumas das imagens produzidas no período de colaboração com os artistas mencionados acima. O ponto de intersecção dos dois conjuntos que constituem a exposição está na centralidade do corpo. Trata-se de uma ênfase na corporalidade que está também na origem da reflexão antropológica do autor e que marca todo o seu percurso intelectual – e que, por isso, consideramos decisiva para se compreender a articulação, em sua práxis, entre fotografia e pensamento, arte e antropologia.

Variações do corpo selvagem tem como fio condutor uma concatenação de trechos extraídos de ensaios e entrevistas de Viveiros de Castro. Buscamos, assim, frisar a continuidade entre, de um lado, a reflexão imagética contínua sobre o corpo que constitui sua obra fotográfica e, de outro, suas pesquisas etnológicas e postulações teóricas. Os fragmentos textuais também indicam, esperamos que com sutileza, os diferentes segmentos da exposição. Estes não foram divididos por títulos, uma vez que a ideia é precisamente explorar a fluidez entre um momento e outro do percurso expositivo, com o estabelecimento de diálogos e sobretudo de questionamentos dialéticos entre as seções. Continuidade semelhantemente complexa verifica-se na relação entre as primeiras fotos de manifestações contraculturais artísticas e as posteriores, de manifestações culturais indígenas: há, em palavras do próprio Viveiros de Castro, “ao mesmo tempo descontinuidade radical e continuidade poética” entre, por exemplo, a foto de um dançarino vestindo um parangolé de Hélio Oiticica e a de um xamã araweté. O que está em questão na exposição, ainda segundo o antropólogo-fotógrafo, é “a transformação do ‘Seja marginal, seja herói’ de Oiticica em ‘Não seja pobre, seja índio’”.

VARIATIONS OF THE WILD BODY: EDUARDO VIVEIROS DE CASTRO, PHOTOGRAPHER Eduardo Viveiros de Castro is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading anthropologists. In the mid-1990s, he developed the theory of Amerindian perspectivism, which has had an outstanding influence on other fields of learning such as aesthetics, literary theory, political philosophy, and philosophy of law, and on artistic practices in particular. Few of his readers know that Viveiros de Castro was a photographer before becoming an anthropologist and that he had produced some of the most emblematic images of the artist Hélio Oiticica and the poet Waly Salomão, as well as stills for the filmmaker Ivan Cardoso (for whom he also wrote screenplays).

This is the first exhibition to feature a comprehensive selection of his photographs including some two hundred images produced during the period when, as an ethnologist, he studied the Araweté, Kulina, Yanomami, and Yawalapíti Indian groups. Some of the images produced in the period of collaboration with the artists mentioned above are also shown here through the reproduction of pages montaged for the catalog of the first version of this exhibition (Sesc São Paulo, 2015).

The point of intersection between the two sets that comprise the exhibition is in the centrality of the body. This emphasis on corporeality also informs the origin of the author’s anthropological reflection and distinguishes his entire intellectual trajectory—hence our view that this is crucial for the understanding of the double articula-

tion, in his praxis, of photography and thought, art and anthropology.

The guiding thread for Variations of the Wild Body is a concatenation of excerpts from Viveiros de Castro’s essays and interviews through which we aim to emphasize the continuity between the two aspects: his ongoing image-based reflection on the body that makes up his photographic oeuvre, and his ethnological research and theoretical postulates. Textual fragments also contrast different segments of the exhibition—but they do so subtly, we would hope. They have not been separated by subtitles, since the idea is precisely to explore the fluidity between different segments, pose dialogues, and particularly raise dialectical challenges across them.

A similarly complex continuity may be seen in the relationship between his early countercultural-art photographs and later Indigenous cultural events. In Viveiros de Castro’s own words, there is “at the same time radical discontinuity and poetic continuity” between the photo of a dancer wearing an Hélio Oiticica cape and one of an Araweté shaman, for example. At the exhibition, according to the anthropologist-photographer, “the transformation of Oiticica’s ‘Be an outcast, be a hero’ into ‘Don’t be poor, be an Indigenous’” is what has been brought into question.

Carõ: multidões da floresta propõe um olhar sobre as concepções acerca da morte presentes na cosmologia do povo indígena Krahô, indo ao encontro da potência estética e política das suas representações na mitologia, nos cantos e na vida ritual.

O conceito krahô de carõ é central nesta concepção: “alma” ou “princípio vital” que anima todas as coisas do mundo, refere-se também a reflexos e sombras e, por uma extensão de sentido, recentemente passou a designar fotografias, vídeos e filmes.

Palavra polissêmica e que pode receber diferentes traduções, carõ abrange imagens com estatutos ontológicos variados e que, apesar de estarem sempre ligadas a um corpo de referência, podem dele prescindir, agindo no mundo de maneira autônoma.

Quando o corpo adoece ou simplesmente dorme, o carõ das pessoas frequentemente se afasta, indo ao encontro de algum parente já falecido ou saindo para caminhar na floresta e na cidade, perambulação que produz os sonhos. No entanto, se esta separação se prolonga por muito tempo, pode se tornar definitiva e, por consequência, levar à morte: o carõ da pessoa torna-se mẽcarõ, “espírito” ou “duplo” de um corpo humano morto. Os mẽcarõ gostam da floresta, da noite e da escuridão, enquanto os Krahô (leia-se “os vivos”) se concebem como habitantes dos espaços claros e ensolarados. Nas diferentes versões sobre a vida post-mortem, assunto sempre aberto à especulação, a mais comum afirma que o carõ, ao se desligar do corpo humano, sofre outras mortes, transformando-se sucessivamente e assumindo várias formas: animal, planta, pedra, toco de árvore, até virar nada...

Cerca de um ano depois do falecimento, a família do morto se organiza então para realizar o Pàrcahàc, ritual de fim de luto tateado pelo percurso visual e sonoro aqui proposto.

Para os Krahô, que não cultuam os mortos e rejeitam a ideia de herança, este é o momento de romper a relação com o carõ do defunto, despedindo-se da lembrança e da saudade.

A palavra que dá nome ao ritual é também elucidativa a esse respeito: enquanto pàr designa a “tora” (tronco), o termo cahàc significa aquilo que “parece mas não é”. Assim, mais do que um símbolo, a tora é o morto, uma “imagem” de seu corpo refeito para ser uma última vez lembrado, chorado e alegrado, antes que seja para sempre esquecido.

O povo Krahô faz parte de um conjunto sociocultural mais amplo, composto por outros seis grupos ameríndios, conhecidos como povos Timbira. Estes povos se autodenominam mẽhĩ (“nossa carne” ou simplesmente “nós, humanos”) e falam línguas de um mesmo conjunto dialetal, pertencente à família linguística Jê.

Diferenciam-se de outros povos ameríndios por certas características em comum, tais como a ornamentação corporal e o corte de cabelo, a forma circular de suas aldeias, a prática de correr com toras e um vasto corpus de mitos e rituais.

Antigamente, os Krahô ocupavam um amplo território no Brasil Central, hoje reduzido a Terra Indígena Krahô, demarcada na década de 1940 depois que fazendeiros da região promoveram um massacre, em que mais de 20 indígenas foram assassinados. O último censo (2018) estimou a população krahô atual em cerca de 3500

indivíduos, que vivem em 35 aldeias espalhadas no interior da terra indígena. Este território constitui uma importante área contínua de preservação do Cerrado, bioma que abriga uma enorme diversidade biológica e cultural. O Cerrado é também conhecido como “o berço das águas”, por abrigar as nascentes das principais bacias hidrográficas brasileiras, dentre elas, a bacia Amazônica.

Em razão dos interesses do agronegócio e do mercado mundial de commodities, o Cerrado é, atualmente, um dos ecossistemas mais ameaçados do mundo, sendo cotidianamente devastado com a conivência de grande parte da classe política brasileira.

Os Krahô, por sua vez, não percebem o Cerrado e seus habitantes simplesmente enquanto “meio” e “recursos” a serem explorados. Ao contrário, o Cerrado é por eles concebido como uma complexa teia vital composta por humanos, plantas, animais, espíritos e outros sujeitos que pensam, sentem e agem no mundo. Por meio de antiga convivência e intensa interação com estes outros habitantes, os Krahô desenvolveram sofisticados conhecimentos ecológicos, transmitidos através das gerações por meio de narrativas, cantos e rituais. A vida do Cerrado é, assim, indissociável da presença e dos conhecimentos dos povos indígenas, que estão na linha de frente de uma batalha que diz respeito ao planeta como um todo.

CARÕ - MULTITUDES OF THE FOREST

Carõ: multitudes of the forest offers a perspective on the conceptions associated to death found in the cosmology of the Krahô indigenous people, by exploring the aesthetic and political force of its representation in mythology, songs and ritual life.

The concept of carõ is central in this conception: the “soul” or “vital principle” that animates all things in the world, and that also refers to reflections and shadows. Through an extension of its meaning it has recently been used to designate photographs, videos, and films. Carõ is then a word with multiple meanings and that can be translated in many different ways. It covers images that have various different ontological statuses and, although they are always associated to a reference body, it may forego and intervene in the world autonomously.

When the body falls ill or simply falls asleep, people’s carõ often moves away, to visit a deceased relative or go for a walk in the forest, or in the city, and this wandering produces dreams. However, if this separation is prolonged for too much time, it may become definitive and, consequently, lead to death: the person’s carõ thereby becomes a mẽcarõ, a “spirit” or “double” of a dead human body. The mẽcarõ appreciate the forest, night and darkness, while the Krahô (“the living ones”) see themselves as inhabitants of the clear and sunny spaces. In the different versions of the afterlife - a subject that is always open to speculation - the most common one claims that the carõ, after detached

from the human body, suffers further deaths, successively transforming and taking various forms: animal, plant, stone, tree stump, until it becomes nothing ...

About a year after his or her death, the family of the deceased person assembles to perform the Pàrcahàc, a ritual of mourning which is traced by the visual and sound itinerary proposed herein.

For the Krahô, who don’t worship the dead and reject the idea of inheritance, this is the moment to break the relationship with the deceased’s carõ, bidding farewell to any associated nostalgia or memories. The name of this ritual is also elucidative in this regard: while pàr designates “tree trunk”, the term cahàc refers to that which “seems but isn’t”. Thus, more than a symbol, the “tora” is the dead person, an “image” of his or her body recreated to be for the last time remembered, cried and rejoiced, before it is forgotten forever.

The Krahô people form part of a wider sociocultural community, made up of six other Amerindian groups, known as the Timbira peoples. These people call themselves mẽhĩ (“our flesh” or simply “us, humans”) and speak various dialects of the same root language, belonging to the Jê linguistic family. They differentiate themselves from other Amerindian peoples by certain shared characteristics, such as body ornamentation and haircut, the circular form of their villages, the practice of running with tree trunks and a vast corpus of myths and rituals.

Formerly, the Krahô occupied a large territory in Central Brazil, which has nowadays been reduced to the Krahô Indigenous Territory, an area that was demarcated in the 1940s after a massacre perpetrated by farmers in the

region, in which over 20 indigenous people were murdered. The last census (2018) estimated that the current Krahô population is about 3500 individuals, who live in 35 villages scattered within the indigenous land. This territory is an important continuous area of preservation of the Cerrado, a biome that harbours tremendous biological and cultural diversity. The Cerrado is also known as “the cradle of waters”, because it shelters the sources of Brazil’s main hydrographic basins, including the Amazon basin. Due to the interests of agribusiness and the world commodity market, the Cerrado is currently one of the world’s most threatened ecosystems and is devastated on a daily basis, with the connivance of a significant section of Brazil’s political class.

The Krahô do not perceive the Cerrado and its inhabitants simply as a “means” or a “resource” to be explored. On the contrary, they conceive the Cerrado as a complex vital web, composed of humans, plants, animals, spirits and other subjects who think, feel and act in the world. Through ancient coexistence and intense interaction with these other inhabitants, the Krahô have developed sophisticated ecological knowledge, transmitted from one generation to the next through stories, songs and rituals. The life of the Cerrado is thus inseparable from the presence and knowledge of indigenous peoples, who stand at the forefront of a battle that concerns the planet as a whole.

Com A morte de Ubu, figura mítica criada em 1896 pelo escritor Alfred Jarry e cuja proverbial boçalidade a ergueu ao panteão dos anti-heróis da vanguarda, João Louro (Lisboa, 1963) convoca os tempos conturbados do modernismo pré Primeira Grande Guerra, em que a máscara do niilismo e do absurdo foi uma das mais eficazes respostas que artistas e poetas contrapuseram à insanidade do conflito armado que dizimou meia Europa.

Sobretudo focado, nos seus últimos trabalhos, nas subterrâneas relações formais e semânticas entre modernismo e primitivismo, João Louro inaugura com esta intervenção uma pesquisa sobre o conceito de veneno, substância rica em significados e em predicados, para se focar na oposição entre duas conceções antagónicas do mundo: as sociedades contemporâneas, sedimentadas numa crença cega no progresso; as sociedades ditas primitivas ou arcaicas, em voluntário isolamento do mundo contemporâneo, que baseiam a sua existência numa relação de troca e de criterioso equilíbrio com aquilo que a terra oferece e com os outros seres vivos.

Não são raras, nos meios de comunicação atuais, as imagens que mostram povos indígenas brandindo os seus arcos e lançando as suas flechas contra helicópteros ou avionetas que sobrevoam os seus territórios, invadindo e ameaçando os seus modos de vida. Estas imagens dão a medida de uma total desproporção de forças.

O veneno, extraído de plantas ou animais a partir de um conhecimento profundo dos segredos do mundo natural, simboliza aqui a desesperada resistência dos povos indígenas face à sanha colonizadora das sociedades capitalistas, que, na demanda de um futuro que chegue rápido, tudo querem dominar, explorar e, em última instância, destruir.

Em última instância, João Louro fala-nos de duas conceções do tempo e de duas éticas de existência radicalmente diferentes e constrói uma metáfora invertida – espécie de “feitiço que se vira contra o feiticeiro” – que na prática funciona como uma predição: o progresso, outrora erigido como solução para todos os males, é a praga que conduzirá a nossa extinção.

THE DEATH OF UBU

The death of Ubu, is based on the mythical figure of Ubu, created in 1896 by the writer Alfred Jarry and whose proverbial goodwill led him to be included amongst the pantheon of avant-garde anti-heroes. With this work, João Louro (Lisbon, 1963) conjures up the troubled times of pre-WWI modernism, in which use, by artists and poets, of the mask of nihilism and the absurd was considered to be one of the most effective responses against the insanity of the armed conflict that went on to decimate half of Europe.

In his most recent works, João Louro has focused on the subterranean formal and semantic relations between modernism and primitivism. With this intervention he inaugurates his research into the concept of poison, a substance that is rich in meanings and predicates, in order to focus on the opposition between two antagonistic conceptions of the world: contemporary societies, rooted in blind faith in progress, and so-called primitive or archaic societies, in voluntary isolation from the contemporary world, which base their existence on a relation-

ship of exchange and careful balance with that which the earth offers and with other living beings.

Today’s media often shows us images of indigenous people brandishing their bows and arrows against helicopters or airplanes flying over their territories, invading and threatening their way of life. These images reveal a total disproportion of forces.

In this case, poison - extracted from plants or animals, using profound knowledge of the secrets of the natural world - symbolises the desperate resistance of indigenous peoples to the colonising spirit of capitalist societies, which, in search of a rapidly-moving future, aim to dominate, exploit and ultimately destroy everything.

João Louro essentially addresses two conceptions of time and two radically different ethics of existence, to construct an inverted metaphor - a sort of "spell turned against the sorcerer" that in practice functions as a prediction: progress, once heralded as the solution to all evils, is the plague that will lead to our extinction.
