The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below.

At a cost of $35 million, the 1.2-mile bridge took more than four years to build. Eleven men lost their lives during construction.

Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour.

The color of the bridge, known as International Orange, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a fivefoot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $6 collected electronically at the toll plaza when entering San Francisco (no cash payment). Electronic options include FasTrackÂŽ and pay-by-plate (toll invoice). A toll invoice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge), where you can take a virtual picture of yourself atop the bridge towers or cables, and at Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point,provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline.

The best way to see the bridge is to walk across it which takes about an hour round trip. When walking the bridge dress warmly whatever time of year. Free parking is available on the north side at Vista Point, paid parking is available on the south side at the Visitor Center near the toll booths.

Alcatraz Island has served as a harbor fortification, military detention facility and maximum-security federal penitentiary. The West Coast’s first and oldest operating lighthouse is also located on the island. Today Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s top tour attractions; over one million people visit Alcatraz each year.

Most curiosity surrounding Alcatraz focuses on the period when the island served as the infamous maximum-security prison for notorious Mafia criminals and high-risk convicts. In 1934 control of Alcatraz shifted from the US military to the Department of Justice who found itself ill equipped to deal with the violent crime surge that followed the Great Depression. Citizens lived in fear as mobsters and thugs ruled the streets in many metropolitan cities. Alcatraz proved the perfect solution for incarcerating the country’s most violent of criminals.

A foremost security expert was commissioned to design a 600-cell escape-proof prison where a ratio of one guard to every three prisoners was maintained.

The first prisoners on Alcatraz were handpicked from other penitentiaries and were among the nation’s most unmanageable convicts. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud were among the first group of inmates to arrive.

Crimes committed by the hardened criminals who resided on the island ranged from bank robbery to rape to murder.

Upon arrival at Alcatraz new prisoners were assigned to a private cell and provided with only life’s most basic necessities: clothing, food, water and medical care; anything above and beyond this was considered a privilege. Inmates were required to observe a strict silence policy, only being allowed to talk during meals and recreation.

Historically, many prison riots had been started because of the poor quality of prison food so Warden James Johnston vowed that the Alcatraz cafeteria would be the best in the prison system. Prisoners of Alcatraz dined on a menu of salads, fresh fruit, diverse entrees and even desserts.

Although the island is only 1.25 miles from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy Bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to the cold water.

There were 14 attempts to escape Alcatraz during its 29-year tenure as a federal penitentiary. Most attempts ended with escapees being recaptured or killed.

Frank Lee Morris and Clarence and John Anglin made the most famous escape attempt in 1962. The movie, Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood, was based on their elaborate plot. Using homemade

tools to break out of their cells, the inmates made their way off the island using rafts and inflatable life vests made from prison issued raincoats. Many still speculate whether or not the inmates survived the cold and rough waters to reach land and the US Marshals continue to hunt for the escapees.

In 1963 the decision to close Alcatraz was made

by US Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Alcatraz desperately needed repair from extensive salt-water and air corrosion at a time when budgets were being cut. At three times the operating expenses of other penitentiaries, Alcatraz was simply too costly to keep open. The isolation (and hence lack of natural resources) that had made the island such an attractive site for a maximum-security prison ultimately sealed its fate.

“The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction.

The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero.

To avoid disappointment, purchase Alcatraz tickets well in advance. In summer months and on holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as 3-4 weeks in advance. On days when the Alcatraz tour is sold out, consider a bay cruise which passes close to the island for photos.

Be aware that to reach the cellhouse visitors must walk up a steep hill. The distance from the dock to the cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile and equivalent to a 13-story climb. Visitors unable to make this climb may take advantage of an hourly electric shuttle.

PIER 39, a renovated cargo pier, is home port to the Blue & Gold Fleet and offers two levels of specialty shops and destination dining with over 20 restaurants including Hard Rock Cafe. Aquarium of the Bay, RocketBoat (seasonal) and the handcrafted San Francisco Carousel are popular family attractions. The famous sea lions make their home on K-Dock (seasonal).

Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its Italian seafood restaurants with waterfront views. Vendors along Jefferson Street sell Dungeness crab from steaming cauldrons and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, a signature San Francisco dish.

Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco.

Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle.

The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you’ll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California.

The Tower is closed through June 2014 for repairs.

The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops, residents, and its landmark place in history. The style and ingenuity that started in the sixties still rings true today.

Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope.

The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline.

The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. The descent begins at Hyde Street.

Nearly 514 blocks of San Francisco, including much of Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue, were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many beautiful examples of nineteenth-century Victorian architecture were lost in the disaster.

Postcard Row is possibly the most photographed spot in the City. These colorful Victorian houses or “Painted Ladies” with the San Francisco skyline in the backdrop have graced many postcards and movie scenes. r THE EMBARC ADERO

The Embarcadero is a waterfront boulevard lined with elegant palm trees, historic pier structures, hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods.

The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are located to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.

Now open at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero is the magnificent new home of the Exploratorium, a hands-on interactive science museum.

r F LINE Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it.

The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible.

Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake.

The quake and the fires that followed destroyed most of the cable car system, and as the City rebuilt, few lines were restored. A municipal railway replaced most lines.

San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

As you pass through the dragon-adorned Pagoda Gates on Grant Avenue at Bush Street, your senses will be tempted by the aroma of ethnic cuisine, bright neon and the sound of foreign languages.

The heart of Chinatown is Portsmouth Square where San Francisco’s first Chinese immigrants settled in the 1850s. Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents.

Visitors will find traditional herb pharmacies, temples, fortune cookie factories, garment factories, fresh produce markets, seafood and poultry shops, and many fine restaurants.

r NORTH BEACH

North Beach, tucked between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, is a favorite gathering spot for visitors and locals alike.

Waves of immigrants have created a diverse ethnic mix in North Beach which is often compared to Paris’ Left Bank. Today, the area is predominantly Italian and known as Little Italy of the West.

The Beat Generation of the 1950s is rooted in this eclectic San Francisco neighborhood. City Lights Bookstore at 261 Columbus Avenue was Allen Ginsberg’s publisher and at the movement’s center.

It’s the restaurants, however, that draw the crowds to North Beach, and you won’t be disappointed with any selection that you make. Traditional cafes, Italian delicatessens selling homemade ravioli, and bakeries offering tempting pastries line Columbus Avenue.

At the heart of North Beach is Washington Square, a grassy piazza where the Church of Saints Peter & Paul is located.

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Mexico and Latin America on Mission Street, where visitors can enjoy lavish murals, savory foods and a dazzling range of traditional and avant-garde art.

One of the City’s oldest structures is Mission Dolores, the sixth Franciscan mission along El Camino Real.

Valencia Street has become the epicenter of the gentrified Mission District. The desirable neighborhood commands high rents and is home to many of the City’s “must-try” eateries, hippest boutiques and coolest bars and clubs.

Just a couple of blocks away, and parallel to Valencia, is Dolores Street. From the top of the hill, Dolores Park offers a spectacular downtown view and is a favorite local gathering spot, especially on sunny days.

Approximately three miles long and a half mile wide (1,017 acres), this treasure is covered with grassy meadows, wooded bike trails, secluded lakes, open groves and gardens.

The Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1879 and modeled after London’s Kew Gardens, is a glass Victorian displaying a paradise of flowers.

The park’s main attractions include two newly-rebuilt museums, the de Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences which features a living roof and indoor rainforest.

The Japanese Tea Garden is a four-acre refuge of traditional Japanese architecture, koi ponds and bamboo trees. San Francisco Botanical Gardens contains the Garden of Fragrance, the MoonViewing Garden and the New World Cloud Forest.

The Castro, an international symbol of gay pride, has one of the City’s richest histories. as Harvey Milk, remains strong. Milk’s former campaign headquarters is located at 575 Castro.

Twin Peaks Bar, located at the intersection of Market and Castro, was the first gay bar in the city, and possibly the United States, to tout large windows. The most recognizable attraction in the neighborhood is the Castro Theatre, a movie palace built in 1922.

Nearby Twin Peaks offers the best panoramic views of San Francisco. A vista area at the parking lot offers stunning views beyond the City to the Golden Gate Bridge and to the East Bay.

r M U I R W O O D S & S AU S A L I TO Muir Woods is located 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across.

The park is home to 50 species of birds, black-tailed deer, steelhead trout and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.”

U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness, and in 1908 they donated it to the federal governent to protect it from development. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908.

Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old.

There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove.

Cool, shaded and moist year round, the park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally. The park is. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Farenheit. Be prepared for rain if visiting the park from October to May.
