Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge), and at Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline. The best way to see the bridge is to walk across it which takes about an hour round trip. When walking the bridge dress warmly whatever time of year. Free parking is available on the north side at Vista Point, paid parking is available on the south side at the Visitor Center near the toll booths. www.baycityguide.com/golden_gate_bridge The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. At a cost of $35 million, the 1.2-mile bridge took more than four years to build. Eleven men lost their lives during construction. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as “International Orange”, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings and provides enhanced visibility to passing ships. It’s a popular misconception that the bridge is painted “endto-end” each year. In 1965, due to advancing corrosion, a program to remove the original lead-based paint from the bridge began. The bridge requires routine maintenance on an ongoing basis by a staff of 28 painters and 13 ironworkers. US-manufactured steel was used to build the bridge and shipped through the Panama Canal to San Francisco. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $6 collected electronically at the toll plaza when entering San Francisco (no cash payment). Electronic options include FasTrack® and pay-by-plate (toll invoice). A toll invoice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

r F LINE Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s, San Francisco’s first street car (1912) and “The Street Car Named Desire” acquired from New Orleans in exchange for a California Street cable car. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake and the fires that destroyed most of the cable car system. As the City rebuilt, few lines were restored; a municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

Alcatraz Island has served as a harbor fortification, military detention facility and maximum-security federal penitentiary. The West Coast’s first and oldest operating lighthouse is also located on the island. Today Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s top tour attractions; over one million people visit Alcatraz each year. Most curiosity surrounding Alcatraz focuses on the period when the island served as the infamous maximum-security prison for notorious Mafia criminals and high-risk convicts. In 1934 control of Alcatraz shifted from the US military to the Department of Justice who found itself ill equipped to deal with the violent crime surge that followed the Great Depression. Citizens lived in fear as mobsters and thugs ruled the streets in many metropolitan cities. Alcatraz proved the perfect solution for incarcerating the country’s most violent of criminals. A foremost security expert was commissioned to design a 600-cell escapeproof prison where a ratio of one guard to every three prisoners was maintained. The first prisoners on Alcatraz were handpicked from other penitentiaries and were among the nation’s most unmanageable convicts. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud were among the first group of inmates to arrive. Crimes committed by the hardened criminals who resided on the island ranged from bank robbery to rape to murder. Upon arrival at Alcatraz new prisoners were assigned to a private cell and provided with only life’s most basic necessities: clothing, food, water and medical care; anything above and beyond this was considered a privilege. Inmates were required to observe a strict silence policy, only being allowed to talk during meals and recreation. Historically, many prison riots had been started because of the poor quality of prison food so Warden James Johnston vowed that the Alcatraz cafeteria would be the best in the prison system. Prisoners of Alcatraz dined on a menu of salads, fresh fruit, diverse entrees and even desserts. Although the island is only 1.25 miles from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy Bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to the cold water. There were 14 attempts to escape Alcatraz during its 29-year tenure as a federal penitentiary. Most attempts ended with escapees being recaptured or killed. Frank Lee Morris and Clarence and John Anglin made the most famous escape attempt in 1962. The movie, Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood,

was based on their elaborate plot. Using homemade tools to break out of their cells, the inmates made their way off the island using rafts and inflatable life vests made from prison issued raincoats. Many still speculate whether or not the inmates survived the cold and rough waters to reach land and the US Marshals continue to hunt for the escapees. In 1963 the decision to close Alcatraz was made by US Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Alcatraz desperately needed repair from extensive salt-water and air corrosion at a time when budgets were being cut. At three times the operating expenses of other penitentiaries, Alcatraz was simply too costly to keep open. The isolation (and hence lack of natural resources) that had made the island such an attractive site for a maximum-security prison ultimately sealed its fate. “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero. To avoid disappointment, purchase Alcatraz tickets well in advance. In summer months and on holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as 3-4 weeks in advance. On days when the Alcatraz tour is sold out, consider a bay cruise which passes close to the island for photos. Be aware that to reach the cellhouse visitors must walk up a steep hill. The distance from the dock to the cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile and equivalent to a 13-story climb. Visitors unable to make this climb may take advantage of an hourly electric shuttle. Breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate can be captured from the beautifully landscaped Agave Trail. The trail (open from late September to mid-February) begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of the island, winds through a protected bird sanctuary to a stairway where prison guards’ houses once stood and down to the water’s edge. Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you’ll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California.

The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops and restaurants, residents and its landmark place in history as the birthplace of counter culture. Many visitors to the Haight enjoy walking the streets in search of the places that were home to the great names in the psychedelic rock scene of the mid-60s: Grateful Dead (710 Ashbury Street), Jefferson Airplane (2400 Fulton Street), Jimi Hendrix (1524A Haight Street), Country Joe & the Fish (638 Ashbury Street), Janis Joplin (122 Lyon Street) and Big Brother and the Holding Company (1018 Page Street). The style and ingenuity that started in the sixties still rings true today.

Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. Descent for the one-block brick paved section of Lombard Street begins at Hyde Street and ends at Leavenworth. The speed limit is 5mph. Tour buses and taxis are restricted. The best place for a photo is from Leavenworth Street looking up.

The waterfront of the Marina is anchored by the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. Locals use Crissy Field and the Marina Green as their front lawn and beach, where acres of grassy areas lead to the yacht harbor with stunning close up views of the famous suspension bridge and Alcatraz Island. Join cyclists, joggers, dog-walkers and kite-flyers for a breathtaking walk along the northern waterfront. Perhaps San Francisco has no spot more romantic than the Palace of Fine Arts designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck. Reflected in a pretty lagoon populated with swans and ducks, the monument was part of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition built to celebrate the opening of the canal and re-launch San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The only surviving remnant of the event is this single palace. Illuminated by night, the century-old landmark is a favorite of brides, film directors, artists and tourists. Chestnut Street offers several blocks of contemporary independent boutiques mixed in with trendy coffee shops, cafés, bars and popular restaurants spilling out onto sidewalk.

Nearly 514 blocks of San Francisco, including much of Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue, were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many beautiful examples of nineteenth-century Victorian architecture were lost in the disaster. Today some 14,000 Victorians have been preserved west of Van Ness Avenue in the Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights and Alamo Square districts. Distinguished by their design features, the three styles of Victorians include the Italianate, the Stick and the Queen Anne. The Italianate which flourished in the 1870s is identified by a flat roof (often hidden behind a false front), slim pillars flanking the front door and bays with side windows that slant inward. These narrow row houses were patterned after Roman Classical ornamentation. Outstanding examples of the Italianate can be found at Bush and Fillmore streets. The Stick, which peaked in popularity during the 1880s, added ornate woodwork outlines to the doors, frames and bay windows of the Italianate design. Other additions included the “French” cap, gables and the “three-sided rectangle” bays. View classic San Francisco Sticks at Laguna near Bush streets. Tour a grand Queen Anne, the Haas-Lilienthal House, located at 2007 Franklin at Washington. (Tours given Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only.) These colorful Victorian houses or “Painted Ladies” with the San Francisco skyline in the backdrop have graced many postcards and movie scenes. Capture the view from the center of the park on the edge of Alamo Square at Steiner and Hayes streets.

The Embarcadero is a waterfront boulevard lined with elegant palm trees, historic pier structures, hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods. The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are located to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. Now open at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero is the magnificent new home of the Exploratorium, a hands-on interactive science museum.

(SF Map: M - N5-6) As you pass through the dragon-adorned Pagoda Gates on Grant Avenue at Bush Street, your senses will be tempted by the aroma of ethnic cuisine, bright neon and the sound of

foreign languages. The heart of Chinatown is Portsmouth Square where San Francisco’s first Chinese immigrants settled in the 1850s. Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents. Visit the first Roman Catholic cathedral built on the West Coast, Old St. Mary’s Church (660 California/ Kearny) built in 1854 by Chinese laborers. Most local Chinese commerce remains along Stockton Street where visitors will find traditional herb pharmacies, temples, produce and seafood markets and many fine restaurants. The fortune cookie factory located on Ross Alley is a popular stop on many walking tours of Chinatown.

r NORTH BEACH

North Beach, tucked between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, is a favorite gathering spot for visitors and locals alike. Waves of immigrants have created a diverse ethnic mix in North Beach which is often compared to Paris’ Left Bank. Today, the area is predominantly Italian and known as Little Italy of the West. The Beat Generation of the 1950s is rooted in this eclectic San Francisco neighborhood. Upper Grant Avenue maintains the flavor of its Bohemian past. Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights at 261 Columbus Avenue, the first paperback bookstore in the country and Allen Ginsberg’s publisher, was at the movement’s center. Facing City Lights on Jack Kerouac Place is Vesuvio, a saloon worth a visit for its Beat Generation memorabilia. It’s the restaurants, however, that draw the crowds to North Beach, and you won’t be disappointed with any selection that you make. Traditional cafes, Italian delicatessens selling homemade ravioli, and bakeries offering tempting pastries line Columbus Avenue. At the heart of North Beach is Washington Square, a grassy piazza where the Church of Saints Peter & Paul is located.

Golden Gate Park is among the world’s greatest urban parks. Approximately three miles long and a half mile wide (1,017 acres), this treasure is covered with grassy meadows, wooded bike trails, secluded lakes, open groves and gardens. The Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1879 and modeled after London’s Kew Gardens, is a glass Victorian displaying a paradise of flowers. The park’s main attractions include two newlyrebuilt museums, the de Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences which features a living roof and indoor rainforest. The Japanese Tea Garden is a four-acre refuge of traditional Japanese architecture, koi ponds and bamboo trees. San Francisco Botanical Gardens contains the Garden of Fragrance, the Moon-Viewing Garden and the New World Cloud Forest. At Stow Lake, paddle and row boats can be rented for a trip around the lake. The herd of bison that graze in an enclosed paddock just off Kennedy Drive have been a tradition at the park since the 1890s. Attractions at the west end of the park include the Dutch Windmill and the historic Beach Chalet visitors center.

In The Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Approximately 1,600 acres of parks and beaches are located in this northwest corner of the City. Located at the Main Post, the Walt Disney Family Museum tells the fascinating and inspiring story of Walt Disney through more than 1,000 artifacts

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Mexico and Latin America on Mission Street, where visitors can enjoy lavish murals, savory foods and a dazzling range of traditional and avant-garde art. One of the City’s oldest structures is Mission Dolores, the sixth Franciscan mission along El Camino Real.

Valencia Street has become the epicenter of the gentrified Mission District. The desirable neighborhood commands high rents and is home to many of the City’s “must-try” eateries, hippest boutiques and coolest bars and clubs. Just a couple of blocks away is Dolores Street. From the top of the hill, Dolores Park offers a spectacular downtown view and is a favorite local gathering spot, especially on sunny days. (Areas of park closed through 2015.)

The neighborhood known as Eureka Valley was named for one of the Twin Peaks (the other was called Noe). In the 1880s, a village of dairy farms and Victorian houses flourished as Irish, German and Scandinavian immigrant families homesteaded on the slopes of Twin Peaks. When the Castro Street segment of the Market Street Cable Railway opened in 1887, it became a desirable neighborhood referred to as “Little Downtown”. Following World War II the neighborhood’s Victorian homes attracted a new group of migrants, San Francisco’s gay population which was steadily rising after the war.

“The Castro” we know today, an international symbol of gay pride, evolved from the activism of the ‘60s and ‘70s under civil-rights leaders like Harvey Milk. Milk’s former campaign headquarters is located at 575 Castro. His legacy is recalled by the new Rainbow Honor Walk, inlaid sidewalk plaques of LGBT heroines and heroes, seen on Castro Street between Market Street and 19th Street. Twin Peaks Bar, located at the intersection of Market and Castro, was the first gay bar in the city, and possibly the United States, to tout large windows. The most recognizable attraction in the neighborhood is the Castro Theatre, a movie palace built in 1922. The Castro offers an eclectic mix of shopping and dining. The GLBT History Museum celebrates 100 years of San Francisco’s gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender past and is the only museum of its kind in the United States.

Near the geographical center of San Francisco’s 49 square miles, two hills known as Twin Peaks rise 925 feet, offering one of the city’s best views. A vista area at the parking lot offers stunning views beyond the City to the Golden Gate Bridge and to the East Bay. The windy summit is usually approached by car or tour bus, and those with hiking shoes and plenty of energy may ride the Muni bus 37 to a path leading up the north peak’s slope.

Visitors should note that the undeveloped peaks are about appreciating native vegetation, hardy florals, sparrow, brush rabbits and the rare Mission butterfly. There’s one basic restroom up there, but no warming hut or coffee canteen. However, it is a spectacular view on a clear day and a treasure trove of nature.

Van Ness Avenue, the widest street in the City, is home to San Francisco’s city government. The golddomed City Hall (extensively renovated in 1995-1999) was modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Tours of this “beaux-arts” building (the tallest dome in the U.S.) are available. Across the street is the Performing Arts Center comprised of the newly renovated War Memorial Opera House, the Veterans Building, Herbst Theater and Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. San Francisco’s Main Library is located at the corner of Larkin and Grove Streets.

The magnificent Asian Art Museum is one of the largest museums in the western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. The museum’s holdings include nearly 15,000 treasures spanning 6,000 years of history.

r CLIFF HOUSE/OCEAN BEACH (SF Map: A7) Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro, the 24th mayor of San Francisco, once owned onetwelfth of the City including the northwestern coast where the Cliff House and Sutro Baths ruins now stand. Sutro purchased the Cliff house in in 1881 and converted it from a haven for gambling, drinking and prostitution to a posh playground for San Francisco’s elite, former presidents and writers such as Mark Twain. Three Cliff House structures were built on this site and each met with similar unfortunate disaster. The current Cliff House overlooks Ocean Beach and Seal Rocks. Ocean Beach is a three-mile stretch of Pacific coastline. While not suitable for swimming, the beach is a great place to sunbathe, stroll and view a sunset. North of the Cliff House are the remains of the Sutro Baths, once the world’s largest swimming pool. Seven indoor pools were housed here until the structure burned in 1960.

Experienced hikers will enjoy a closer look at San Francisco’s rugged coastline by exploring the Land’s End Trail. The trail, formerly a narrowgauge road for trains which operated from 1888 to 1906, begins at the new Lands End Lookout Visitors Center, winds around the cliffs and passes through Cypress tree groves before ending near Camino del Mar in Lincoln Park. Bring a camera, the views of the Golden Gate Bridge are spectacular along the way.

The San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and links San Francisc o with the East Bay. The new East self-anchored suspension span of the bridge is 2.2 miles and allows pedestrians and bicycles (currently ending short of Yerba Buena Island). r M U I R W O O D S & S AU S A L I TO Muir Woods is located 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. The park is home to 50 species of birds, black-tailed deer, steelhead trout and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.” U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness, and in 1908 they donated it to the federal governent to protect it from development. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908. Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove. Cool, shaded and moist year round, the park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally. The park is. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Farenheit. Be prepared for rain if visiting the park from October to May. Eight miles north of San Francisco across the bay is the tiny bayside community of Sausalito. Arrival or departure by ferry is the best way to experience this Mediterranean-style community that is often compared to the French Riviera. Sausalito’s many attractions include Bridgeway Avenue, a quaint shopping district. After a day of touring, return to San Francisco by ferry. The Blue & Gold Fleet departs Sausalito for Pier 41. Golden Gate Transit departs Sausalito only to the Ferry Building.

Today boutiques, restaurants and antique stores line historic Cannery Row and the wharf area. At the end of the stretch is Monterey’s biggest attraction, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is home to more than 6,500 specimens of marine life indigenous to the Monterey Bay. The natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula can also be explored at one of the area’s state beaches. Here tide pools, filled with anemones and starfish, are hidden among the rocks. 17 Mile Drive™ is the scenic route between Monterey and Carmel.
