Family entertainment is the specialty along Jefferson Street with attractions such as the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, Madame Tussauds, The San Francisco Dungeon, and the Red & White Fleet, offering bay cruises in 16 languages. Ghirardelli Square, once home to the worldfamous chocolate factory features a Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop with displays of the original chocolate-making machines. Experience San Francisco’s authentic maritime history at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park which extends from Aquatic Park to Hyde Street Pier, the only floating National Park. Board the world’s largest collection of historic ships. The USS Pampanito, a WWII submarine museum and memorial is open to the public at Pier 45. PIER 39, a renovated cargo pier, is home port to the Blue & Gold Fleet and offers two levels of specialty shops and destination dining with over 20 restaurants including Hard Rock Cafe. Aquarium of the Bay, RocketBoat (seasonal) and the handcrafted San Francisco Carousel are

popular family attractions. The famous sea lions make their home on K-Dock (seasonal). Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its Italian seafood restaurants with waterfront views. Vendors along Jefferson Street sell Dungeness crab from steaming cauldrons and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, a signature San Francisco dish. The Wharf even has several wine tasting rooms. Anchorage Square is another popular destination for shopping, dining, lodging and touring. A visit to Fisherman’s Wharf would not be complete without stopping to watch the clowns, musicians, dancers, magicians and other street performers who earn a living entertaining visitors.

r GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

City Sights (SF Map: D1)

The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. At a cost of $35 million, the 1.2-mile bridge took more than four years to build. Eleven men lost their lives during construction. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as “International Orange”, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings and provides enhanced visibility to passing ships. It’s a popular misconception that the bridge is painted “end-to-end” each year. In 1965, due to advancing corrosion, a program to remove the original lead-based paint from the bridge began. The bridge requires routine maintenance on an ongoing basis by a staff of 28 painters and 13 ironworkers. US-manufactured steel was used to build the bridge and shipped through the Panama Canal to San Francisco. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is collected electronically at the toll plaza when entering San Francisco (no cash payment). Electronic options include FasTrack® and pay-by-plate (toll invoice). A toll invoice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge), and at Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline. The best way to see the bridge is to walk across it which takes about an hour round trip. When walking the bridge dress warmly whatever time of year. Free parking is available on the north side at Vista Point, paid parking is available on the south side at the Visitor Center near the toll booths. A postcard-perfect panorama of the skyline can also be seen from the Marin Headlands (the last exit in Marin County).

r F LINE Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s, San Francisco’s first street car (1912) and “The Street Car Named Desire” acquired from New Orleans in exchange for a California Street cable car. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake and the fires that destroyed most of the cable car system. As the City rebuilt, few lines were restored; a municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

(SF Map: L0)

Alcatraz Island has served as a harbor fortification, military detention facility and maximum-security federal penitentiary. The West Coast’s first and oldest operating lighthouse is also located on the island. Today Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s top tour attractions; over one million people visit Alcatraz each year. Most curiosity surrounding Alcatraz focuses on the period when the island served as the infamous maximum-security prison for notorious Mafia criminals and high-risk convicts. In 1934 control of Alcatraz shifted from the US military to the Department of Justice who found itself ill equipped to deal with the violent crime surge that followed the Great Depression. Citizens lived in fear as mobsters and thugs ruled the streets in many metropolitan cities. Alcatraz proved the perfect solution for incarcerating the country’s most violent of criminals. A foremost security expert was commissioned to design a 600-cell escapeproof prison where a ratio of one guard to every three prisoners was maintained. The first prisoners on Alcatraz were handpicked from other penitentiaries and were among the nation’s most unmanageable convicts. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud were among the first group of inmates to arrive. Crimes committed by the hardened criminals who resided on the island ranged from bank robbery to rape to murder. Upon arrival at Alcatraz new prisoners were assigned to a private cell and provided with only life’s most basic necessities: clothing, food, water and medical care; anything above and beyond this was considered a privilege. Inmates were required to observe a strict silence policy, only being allowed to talk during meals and recreation. Historically, many prison riots had been started because of the poor quality of prison food so Warden James Johnston vowed that the Alcatraz cafeteria would be the best in the prison system. Prisoners of Alcatraz dined on a menu of salads, fresh fruit, diverse entrees and even desserts. Although the island is only 1.25 miles from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy Bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to the cold water. There were 14 attempts to escape Alcatraz during its 29-year tenure as a federal penitentiary. Most attempts ended with escapees being recaptured or killed. Frank Lee Morris and Clarence and John Anglin made the most famous escape attempt in 1962. The movie, Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood,

15

was based on their elaborate plot. Using homemade tools to break out of their cells, the inmates made their way off the island using rafts and inflatable life vests made from prison issued raincoats. Many still speculate whether or not the inmates survived the cold and rough waters to reach land and the US Marshals continue to hunt for the escapees. In 1963 the decision to close Alcatraz was made by US Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Alcatraz desperately needed repair from extensive salt-water and air corrosion at a time when budgets were being cut. At three times the operating expenses of other penitentiaries, Alcatraz was simply too costly to keep open. The isolation (and hence lack of natural resources) that had made the island such an attractive site for a maximum-security prison ultimately sealed its fate. “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero. To avoid disappointment, purchase Alcatraz tickets well in advance. In summer months and on holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as 3-4 weeks in advance. On days when the Alcatraz tour is sold out, consider a bay cruise which passes close to the island for photos. Be aware that to reach the cellhouse visitors must walk up a steep hill. The distance from the dock to the cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile and equivalent to a 13-story climb. Visitors unable to make this climb may take advantage of an hourly electric shuttle. Breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate can be captured from the beautifully landscaped Agave Trail. The trail (open from late September to mid-February) begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of the island, winds through a protected bird sanctuary to a stairway where prison guards’ houses once stood and down to the water’s edge. A self-guide brochure of Alcatraz Island (printed in English, Spanish, Italian, Spanish, German or Japanese) is available at the dock for a fee. r COIT TO WER

City Sights (SF Map: N4) where acres of grassy areas lead to the yacht harbor

Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you’ll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California.

r THE HAIGHT

(SF Map: E - F11)

The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops and restaurants, residents and its landmark place in history as the birthplace of counter culture. The style and ingenuity that started in the sixties still rings true today.

r LOMBARD STREET

(SF Map: L3-4)

Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. Descent for the one-block brick paved section of Lombard Street begins at Hyde Street and ends at Leavenworth. The speed limit is 5mph. Tour buses and taxis are restricted. The best place for a photo is from Leavenworth Street looking up.

r MARINA DISTRIC T

(SF Map: G2) The waterfront of the Marina is anchored by the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. Locals use Crissy Field and the Marina Green as their front lawn and beach,

with stunning close up views of the famous suspension bridge and Alcatraz Island. Join cyclists, joggers, dog-walkers and kite-flyers for a breathtaking walk along the northern waterfront. Perhaps San Francisco has no spot more romantic than the Palace of Fine Arts designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck. Reflected in a pretty lagoon populated with swans and ducks, the monument was part of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition built to celebrate the opening of the canal and re-launch San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The only surviving remnant of the event is this single palace. Illuminated by night, the century-old landmark is a favorite of brides, film directors, artists and tourists. Chestnut Street offers several blocks of contemporary independent boutiques mixed in with trendy coffee shops, cafés, bars and popular restaurants spilling out onto sidewalk.

r VIC TORIANS

(SF Map: J5 & G9)

Nearly 514 blocks of San Francisco, including much of Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue, were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many beautiful examples of nineteenth-century Victorian architecture were lost in the disaster. Today some 14,000 Victorians have been preserved west of Van Ness Avenue in the Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights and Alamo Square districts. Distinguished by their design features, the three styles of Victorians include the Italianate, the Stick and the Queen Anne. Tour a grand Queen Anne, the Haas-Lilienthal House, located at 2007 Franklin at Washington. (Tours given Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only.) Postcard Row is possibly the most photographed spot in the City. These colorful Victorian houses or “Painted Ladies” with the San Francisco skyline in the backdrop have graced many a postcard and movie scene. r THE EMBARC ADERO

(SF Map: N-Q6-7)

The Embarcadero is a waterfront boulevard lined with elegant palm trees, historic pier structures, hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods. The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are located

to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.

r CHINATO WN

(SF Map: M - N5-6)

As you pass through the dragon-adorned Pagoda Gates on Grant Avenue at Bush Street, your senses will be tempted by the aroma of ethnic cuisine, bright neon and the sound of foreign languages. The heart of Chinatown is Portsmouth Square where San Francisco’s first Chinese immigrants settled in the 1850s. Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents. Visit the first Roman Catholic cathedral built on the West Coast, Old St. Mary’s Church (660 California/ Kearny) built in 1854 by Chinese laborers. Most local Chinese commerce remains along Stockton Street where visitors will find traditional herb pharmacies, temples, produce and seafood markets and many fine restaurants. The fortune cookie factory located on Ross Alley is a popular stop on many walking tours of Chinatown.

r NORTH BEACH

SF Map: M-N4)

North Beach, tucked between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, is a favorite gathering spot for visitors and locals alike. Waves of immigrants have created a diverse ethnic mix in North Beach which is often compared to Paris’ Left Bank. Today, the area is predominantly Italian and known as Little Italy of the West. The Beat Generation of the 1950s is rooted in this eclectic San Francisco neighborhood. Upper Grant Avenue maintains the flavor of its Bohemian past. Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights at 261 Columbus Avenue, the first paperback bookstore in the country and Allen Ginsberg’s publisher, was at the movement’s center. Facing City Lights on Jack Kerouac Place is Vesuvio, a saloon worth a visit for its Beat Generation memorabilia. It’s the restaurants, however, that draw the crowds to North Beach, and you won’t be disappointed with any selection that you make. Traditional cafes, Italian delicatessens selling homemade ravioli, and bakeries offering tempting pastries line Columbus Avenue. At the heart of North Beach is Washington Square, a grassy piazza where the Church of Saints Peter & Paul is located.

(SF Map: A - D9-11)

Golden Gate Park is among the world’s greatest urban parks. Approximately three miles long and a half mile wide (1,017 acres), this treasure is covered with grassy meadows, wooded bike trails, secluded lakes, open groves and gardens. The Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1879 and modeled after London’s Kew Gardens, is a glass Victorian displaying a paradise of flowers. The park’s main attractions include two newlyrebuilt museums, the de Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences which features a living roof and indoor rainforest. The Japanese Tea Garden is a four-acre refuge of traditional Japanese architecture, koi ponds and bamboo trees. At Stow Lake, paddle and row boats can be rented for a trip around the lake. Every Sunday from dawn to dusk, strollers, roller skaters and bicyclists are allowed free run on a long stretch of John F. Kennedy Drive which closes to auto traffic. The herd of bison that graze in an enclosed paddock just off Kennedy Drive have been a tradition at the park since the 1890s.

r PRESIDIO (SF Map: C - E1-4) The Presidio served as a military station for more than 200 years. Union regiments trained here during the Civil War. The Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Approximately 1,600 acres of parks and beaches are located in this northwest corner of the City. Located at the Main Post, the Walt Disney Family Museum tells the fascinating and inspiring story of Walt Disney through more than 1,000 artifacts.

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Mexico and Latin America on Mission Street, where visitors can enjoy lavish murals, savory foods and a dazzling range of traditional and avant-garde art. One of the City’s oldest structures is Mission Dolores, the sixth Franciscan mission along El Camino Real. Valencia Street has become the epicenter of the gentrified Mission District. The desirable neighborhood commands high rents and is home to many of the City’s “must-try” eateries, hippest boutiques and coolest bars and clubs.

The Castro, an international symbol of gay pride, has one of the City’s richest histories. Populated by dairy farms on the slopes of Twin Peaks in the 1880s, the Castro district today is a thriving neighborhood of restored Victorian homes, bars, shops and restaurants. Community activism, born in the ‘60s and ‘70s under gay-rights leaders such as Harvey Milk, remains strong. Milk’s former campaign headquarters is located at 575 Castro. The most recognizable attraction in the neighborhood is the Castro Theatre, a movie palace built in 1922.

r CIVIC CENTER

(SF Map: K9)

Van Ness Avenue, the widest street in the City, is home to San Francisco’s city government. The golddomed City Hall (extensively renovated in 19951999) was modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Tours of this “beaux-arts” building (the tallest dome in the U.S.) are available. Across the street is the Performing Arts Center comprised of the newly renovated War Memorial Opera House, the Veterans Building, Herbst Theater and Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall.

r CLIFF HOUSE/OCEAN BEACH (SF Map: A7) In 1881 the Cliff House was a posh playground for San Francisco’s elite, former presidents and writers such as Mark Twain. The current Cliff House overlooks Ocean Beach and Seal Rocks. North of the Cliff House are the remains of the Sutro Baths, once the world’s largest swimming pool. Seven indoor pools were housed here until the structure burned in 1960.

r T WIN PEAKS

(SF Map: F-G13)

Near the geographical center of San Francisco’s 49 square miles, two hills known as Twin Peaks rise 925 feet, offering one of the city’s best views. A vista area at the parking lot offers stunning views beyond the City to the Golden Gate Bridge and to the East Bay. r

r M U I R W O O D S & S AU S A L I TO Muir Woods is located 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. The park is home to 50 species of birds, deer, fish and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.” U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness, and in 1908 they donated it to the federal government to protect it from development. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908. Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove. Cool, shaded and moist year round, the park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally. The park is. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared for rain if visiting the park from October to May. Eight miles north of San Francisco across the bay is the tiny bayside community of Sausalito. Arrival or departure by ferry is the best way to experience this Mediterranean-style community that is often compared to the French Riviera. Sausalito’s many attractions include Bridgeway Avenue, a quaint shopping district. After a day of touring, return to San Francisco by ferry. The Blue & Gold Fleet departs Sausalito for Pier 41. Golden Gate Transit departs Sausalito only to the Ferry Building.

Dine & Drink San Francisco’s love affair with food dates back the Gold Rush when exotic flavors sailed into the City from around the world. Italian fishermen sold a seafood stew known as cioppino. Miners headed to the gold country lined up early to purchase a tangy bread known as “sourdough”. The recipe for Irish Coffee was mastered here. Eat your way through San Francisco by exploring our ethnic diversity, you’ll discover culinary treasures in every price range. With close access to farm-fresh ingredients and proximity to the world’s top wine producing regions, it’s no wonder San Francisco is home to many of the culinary world’s Top Chefs.

Nightlife & Entertainment San Francisco knows how to party!

The City comes alive after hours at swanky lounges, live music hotspots and high-energy nightclubs. A magnet for some of the greatest musicians of the Sixties, San Francisco has preserved a thriving music scene. If the arts are more your style, be sure to get tickets for our world-renowned ballet, symphony and opera. Many smash hit theater productions actually debuted in San Francisco before making their way to the Broadway stage. Whether you want to dance the night away, sip a cocktail with a view or be immersed in beatnik history at a North Beach saloon, San Francisco’s nightlife is as diverse as our population.

Wine Country & Beyond While the City is often shrouded in fog on a summer day, just 50 miles north you’ll find the warmth and sunshine

of the Napa & Sonoma Valley. With views as captivating as its varietals, the Wine Country features sprawling vineyards and boutique wineries. Guided wine tours depart daily from San Francisco and include wine tasting fees allowing you the luxury of drinking without driving. Take a trip south of the City to visit the quaint coastal towns of Monterey and Carmel or venture east to experience the majesty of Yosemite National Park. Be sure to plan at least one of these day trips to make your San Francisco experience complete!

r NAPA & SONOMA

r MONTERE Y & C ARMEL

The Napa Valley, a rich and fertile stretch of valley a little over 35 miles in length, is home to almost 300 wineries, most of which line Highway 29. Many of the large wineries offer guided tours of their facilities including the underground limestone caves and storage casks. There is typically a nominal tasting fee at most wineries ($5-$20 per person). This fee often includes a souvenir glass and the opportunity to taste three to six wines. The quaint towns of Yountville and St. Helena are known for both their wineries and their many fine restaurants. Both offer a quaint downtown. Literary legend and one-time Bay Area resident, Jack London created one of the most memorable images of the Sonoma Valley from an Indian fable. He called it the Valley of the Moons as the moon appears to rise several times over succeeding peaks in the Valley. Healdsburg, Glen Ellen and Kenwood are small towns in the Sonoma Valley that are home to many award-winning boutique wineries. With its mild sunny climate and fertile soil, Sonoma was the perfect setting for the missionaries to plant the first crops of grapes used in making wine for the Holy Eucharist. Later, Count Agoston Haraszthy imported cuttings from Europe and produced the first European varieties in America.

With its wild, rocky coastline and brick cannery buildings, Monterey still maintains much of the flavor of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Today boutiques, restaurants and antique stores line historic Cannery Row and the wharf area. At the end of the stretch is Monterey’s biggest attraction, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is home to more than 6,500 specimens of marine life indigenous to the Monterey Bay. The natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula can also be explored at one of the area’s state beaches. Here tide pools, filled with anemones and starfish, are hidden among the rocks. 17 Mile Drive™ is the scenic route between Monterey and Carmel. The road winds along the rugged coast and curves through groves of Monterey Pine and Gowen Cypress trees past the famous Lone Cypress and Pebble Beach Golf Course. An admission to the route is charged but the scenic views are well worth the price. South of Monterey is Carmel an 18th-century European-style village where narrow streets are lined with antique shops, galleries and boutiques. The seaside scenery has a calming effect on this quaint village which has long inspired artists and attracted celebrities.

Wine Country & Beyond r YO S E M I TE Just a four-hour drive from San Francisco is one of the most beautiful spots on Earth, Yosemite National Park. So beautiful is Yosemite, that it was the first land ever set aside by the United States Congress for protection in 1890. The granite building blocks of the Sierra Nevada, El Capitan, Cathedral Rock, Three Brothers, Royal Arches, Half Dome and Clouds Rest are among the nation’s most spectacular treasures. Nowhere else in the world are there as many big falls in such a small area including the 2,425-foot Yosemite Falls, the highest fall in North America. Covering over 761,000 acres, the park offers visitors a variety of activities for all fitness levels from hiking to biking to leisurely tram tours. A free shuttle bus system is available to get around within the park.

Tips for Visiting

Muir Woods

T

an overarching concern of those who maintain the park for the enjoyment of the general public. Muir Woods National Monument is open from 8am daily, 365 days a year. Closing time varies from 5pm to 8pm, depending upon the season. No reservations are required and entrance fees are paid at the gate. Driving is discouraged, as limited parking areas cannot support the number of daily visitors to Muir Woods. The few parking lots are frequently full shortly after Muir Woods opens. Currently visitors may park along the narrow shoulder of the road but it’s not uncommon to have to walk a mile to the park. Therefore, alternative means of reaching the park are highly recommended. RAVELING ACROSS the Golden Gate Bridge,

only 12 miles north of San Francisco, visitors rise into the Marin hills before descending into a tranquil, awe-inspiring experience: a rare old-growth coastal redwood forest. Operated by the U.S. National Park Service as Muir Woods National Monument, these towering ancient giants are over 1,000 years old, the tallest and most-visited Sequoia sempervirens.

Explore Muir Woods National Monument You can dedicate as little as an hour or as much as a full day to explore Muir Woods. Marvel at the giant redwoods as you meander independently via a flat, one-mile-long boardwalk path leading over little bridges beside a creek which winds through the woods and is stroller and wheelchair accessible. Or, join a shorter free guided tour with a volunteer park ranger to learn more about the majestic trees and their fragile eco-system, continuously nourished by coastal fog. Shards of sunlight pierce groves of towering redwood branches and high canopies providing shade for wildlife including the endangered coho salmon, Pacific wren, bats, woodpeckers, owls, deer, chipmunks, skunks, river otters, squirrels and more. There are amazing hikes for every skill level along an extensive interconnected trail system which winds through lush greenery, right out to the shores of the Pacific Ocean at Muir Beach. A gift shop and café are found just inside the entrance.

Preservation Matters Muir Woods predates the first of America’s National Parks, which marked their 100th birthday in 2016. Nature lovers applaud President Theodore Roosevelt for originally protecting these mature redwoods, already hundreds of years old. Today, preservation is

Getting to Muir Woods Arrive by coach. Book an hour or more ahead for a free hotel pick-up and drop-off or board the coach at Fisherman’s Wharf. You’ll travel for approximately a half-hour (over the Golden Gate Bridge!) aboard a comfortable, air conditioned bus to the entrance of Muir Woods at the foot of Mount Tamalpais. Many tours include park admission fees. Take the convenient Hop-On Hop-Off Muir Woods Shuttle, which offers the longest stretch of time to enjoy the woods at your leisure. Departures are offered to and from the park several times throughout the day. Combine two Marin County highlights: Muir Woods and picturesque Sausalito, a quaint small town with a Mediterranean appeal and unbeatable San Francisco skyline views. Waterfront restaurants, boutiques and art galleries line Bridgeway, Sausalito’s downtown thoroughfare. Return to the city via the “world’s second best ferry ride,” a spectacular 25-minute boat trip across San Francisco Bay, with great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. No cell phone service exists at Muir Woods, so if you were planning to book a ride share or taxi, be aware of this limitation. To read more about the tour options offered by GuideYou.com see pages 8-9, 35 & 70.

Notes on the Weather Micro-climates are a natural phenomenon within the San Francisco Bay Area. When it’s cold and foggy in the City it’s most likely warm and sunny just 20 minutes north across the Golden Gate Bridge. Even on a warm, sunny day, it’s wise to bring a jacket along. Keep in mind that a redwood forest has a micro-climate of its own as well. Beneath the tree top canopies, it’s cooler, shadier and foggier in Muir Woods – the ancient coastal redwoods have thrived by absorbing moisture from the dense ocean fog. r

Wine Country

O

NLY AN HOUR or so from San Francisco, Northern California’s internationally renowned wine country makes an easy, fun, educational and truly memorable day trip. Rolling hills and big sky vistas set off rows upon rows of perfect vines – the backdrop to a lineup of famous winery names seen to your right and to your left as you travel Napa and Sonoma Valley wine routes. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised to note that daytime in wine country is warmer and sunnier than San Francisco, even as much as a difference of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a hat and dress in layers leaving the city and you’ll be prepared to enjoy whatever weather wine country has in store. Once the sun goes down, the fog rolls in for a chillier evening. This overnight cooling of the grapevines is key to producing the region’s world-class wines.

Drinking in the Experience An escorted tour is the very best way to get to the heart of gorgeous wine country in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, where you can enjoy exceptional wine tasting experiences, leave the driving to someone else and make new friends. Travel in style in a luxury limo coach. Your transportation provides an intimate group size, convenient pick-up and drop-off locations, a sparkling mimosa breakfast and a California-fresh, farm-to-table picnic lunch to enjoy on the grounds of one of the wine country’s most picturesque spots overlooking expansive vineyards. You’ll benefit from having a knowledgeable tour guide to share true, fascinating stories about the region’s history, outstanding winemakers, varietal grapes and famous brands. Learn about the first European settlers and vine imports, the double threat of Prohibition and Phylloxera, the terroir, the varietals and the emergence of California wines after the Judgment of Paris in 1976.

Ask about the designated American Viticultural Areas in Northern California wine grape-growing regions, or the annual growth cycle of grapevines. Hear about the debate over French oak barrels versus American stainless steel drums or whether traditional natural cork bottle stoppers beat the modern alternatives. Find out why weather, elevation and soil matter, how different aging and barrels affect the fermentation process, what makes a reserve wine and what makes a great vintage. Hear from winery experts as they pour you samples of local reds, whites and rosés from labels such as Homewood, Cline Cellars, and Benziger Family. See how grapes are actually turned into wine with on a private tour. Take home your favorite bottles or arrange a case shipment if you like. Many of the escorted tours are inclusive of all wineries’ tasting fees while others require additional fees ($15-20 per person).

Woods and Wine An excellent bucket list buster is our very popular tour combining two great destinations in one wonderful day. You will depart at 9am from San Francisco, crossing the majestic Golden Gate Bridge to spend an inspirational morning among the ancient towering redwoods and wildlife at Muir Woods National Monument. Then head 45 minutes north for an afternoon that features fine wine tastings at two or three of Sonoma Valley’s best wineries plus beer tasting and a visit to historic Sonoma Plaza, oldest and largest in all of California. Stroll around charming Sonoma Plaza, which has everything from cheese tasting to boutique shopping to 19th century barrack. Visit one of the boutique tasting rooms on the square before returning to the city for a 6pm drop-off. Wine tastings are for age 21+. To read more about wine country tour options from San Francisco and to make a reservation visit GuideYou.com.

Driving North If you do venture north to wine country on your own, or perhaps with a designated driver, don’t miss Sonoma’s whitewashed Spanish Colonial-style California mission, built in 1823, which still stands one block from the plaza. On Tuesday evenings in May through October, Sonoma Plaza comes alive with a certified organic farmers market known as Valley of the Moon. There’s even live music! You’ll find locals enjoying a picnic in the park where wine and other alcoholic beverages are permitted. r

Tips for

Riding Bikes to arrive on the northern side of the bay, you can anticipate much nicer weather, you’ll find sunny skies even when the city is shrouded in fog. The best and warmest weather in San Francisco is typically during spring and fall months.

Rules of the Road

I

The bridge’s eastern side faces the City and is the main walkway, open for both pedestrians and bicycles morning to mid-afternoon on weekdays from 5am to 3:30pm, and then to pedestrians only until dusk. On weekends, the eastern walkway is reserved for pedestrians from 5am to 6pm, or until 9pm during Daylight Saving Time. It is open exclusively to bicyclists during evening and overnight. The western ocean-facing walkway is open only for bicyclists during the hours when they’re not allowed on the eastern walkway.

Bike Rentals

Timing, Convenience and Returns via Ferry

MAGINE riding a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and taking a ferry back...it’s one of those great defining moments of a San Francisco trip for those who are up to the physical challenge. Here are a few tips for making your day extra special.

Bicycle rental companies are found in many locations, including Fisherman’s Wharf for easy access to the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll be provided with a custom fitting, test ride, helmet, bike lock, a map and ferry schedule. Your bike will usually have a rear rack for strapping down larger items, a front bike bag for smaller items, a front map holder and a bike bell. Don’t forget a jacket or hoodie, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle and an I.D. Go on your own or choose a relaxed pace guided group tour over the Golden Gate or around town – no reservations required for a self-guided experience. Check out bike equipment options such as hybrid, mountain, tandem, electric and kids bikes from our bicycle rental partners: • Blazing Saddles • Bay City Bike • Parkwide • Easy Rider (Electric Bikes) Free bike racks are available at the ferry terminal in Sausalito to park and explore the quaint seaside village. Be sure to lock your bike!

Rent bikes by the hour or by the day. Find locations generally open from 8am, some also offer 24-hour drop-off so you can enjoy your day without worrying about return times. For a return by ferry from Sausalito, start your bicycling day early to catch a return ferry quicker. If you depart later, returning ferries will be crowded and lines can be long. Always check the ferry schedule for the last return to San Francisco and plan for an earlier one. Two ferry lines depart Sausalito for both Fisherman’s Wharf (Blue & Gold Fleet - Pier 39 / 41) and the Ferry Building (Golden Gate Transit Pier 1). Once you join the line to board, you may be instructed to take the next ferry for either destination (no need to worry, tickets for the two ferry lines are interchangeable). Blue & Gold Fleet ferries dock at Pier 39/41 while Golden Gate Transit boats will leave passengers at the Ferry Building at Pier 1. Remember to allow enough time to wait for the ferry plus the 25-minute crossing.

Weather Conditions

Is it free to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge? Yes. Motorists pay an automated toll. Bicyclists and pedestrians pay nothing. What about helmets for cyclists? California State Law requires helmets be worn by riders under the age of 18. Although recommended, helmets aren’t mandatory for adults. The downhill ride off the bridge into Sausalito is fun but be careful to maintain control of your bike. r

Everything you’ve ever heard about San Francisco’s signature fog is likely to be true. You may not see a trace of it at all, or you may encounter fog that burns off by late morning and perhaps returns in the evening. Even on the nicest days, expect windy weather when you’re approximately 270 feet high on the roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge. Once you cross the 1.7 miles
