City Sights PIER 39, a renovated cargo pier, is home port to the Blue & Gold Fleet and offers two levels of specialty shops and destination dining including Pier Restaurants and Hard Rock Cafe. Aquarium of the Bay, RocketBoat (seasonal) and Turbo Ride (a simulation theatre) are popular family attractions. The famous sea lions make their home on K-Dock (seasonal). The Anchorage features a variety of stores, restaurants and activities. Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its Italian seafood restaurants with waterfront views. Vendors along Jefferson Street sell Dungeness crab from steaming cauldrons and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, a signature San Francisco dish. Boudin Museum & Bakery exhibits an array of historic photos and artifacts that detail the history behind the original San Francisco Sourdough. Other activities at Fisherman’s Wharf include bicyle rentals and wine tasting.

In 1934 Alcatraz became the infamous maximumsecurity prison for members of organized crime and high-risk convicts. Famous island residents have included “Machine Gun” Kelly, Al Capone and Robert “Birdman” Stroud. Although the island is only a mile from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to cold water.

Alcatraz, Spanish for pelican, was named Isla de los Alcatraces after the birds that were the island’s only inhabitants.

A federal penitentiary until 1963, “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero.

The island served as a military fortification in the 1850s and an incarceration facility for war prisoners during the Spanish-American War.

r GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE (SF Map: D1) The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as International Orange, was chosen because it blends well with the bridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural surroundings. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of

the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $6 collected when entering San Francisco. Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge) and Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline. The postcard-perfect panorama seen here was captured from the Marin Headlands (the last exit in Marin County before crossing the bridge). r COIT TO WER (SF Map: N4) Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle.

r THE HAIGHT (SF Map: E-F11) The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops, residents, and its landmark place in history. r LOMBARD STREET (SF Map: L3-4) Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. The descent begins at Hyde Street.

City Sights hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible.

The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are located to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake. The quake and the fires that followed destroyed most of the cable car system, and as the City rebuilt, few lines were restored. A municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents. r NORTH BEACH (SF Map: M - N4) North Beach, tucked between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, is a favorite gathering spot for

visitors and locals alike. Waves of immigrants have created a diverse ethnic mix in North Beach which is often compared to Paris’ Left Bank. Today, the area is predominantly Italian and known as Little Italy of the West.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and links San Francisco with Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Pedestrians are prohibited on the structure and a toll of $4-$6 is collected westbound. A self-anchored suspension span and new East span of the bridge are currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2013. Treasure Island, which sits in the middle of the Bay Bridge, was created in 1936 for the World’s Fair and then served as a Naval Base during World War II. Re-development efforts have resulted in old aircraft hangars now housing sound stages for film and television productions and San Francisco’s first full service winery and tasting room. The island is known for the most spectacular waterfront views of the city and is easily accessible by auto, public transit and a marina. r

Wine Country y & Beyond y r SONOMA & NAPA Sonoma is regarded as the birthplace of California viticulture. The history of the Sonoma wine industry is closely tied to the early Spanish missionaries. Sonoma is known as having the ideal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. With its mild sunny climate and fertile soil, Sonoma was the perfect setting for the missionaries to plant the first crops of grapes used in making wine for the Holy Eucharist. Later, Count Agoston Haraszthy imported cuttings from Europe and produced the first European varieties in America. The Napa Valley, a rich and fertile stretch of valley a little over 35 miles in length, is home to almost 300 wineries, most of which line Highway 29. Many of the large wineries offer guided tours of their facilities. There is typically a nominal tasting fee at most wineries ($5-$20 per person), which sometimes includes a souvenir glass and sample tastings. NOTE: Traveling with wine by car: if the weather is warm, don’t store wine in the trunk; alcohol expands with heat. It’s better to keep wine in a dark cool place.
