City Sights PIER 39, a renovated cargo pier, is home port to the Blue & Gold Fleet and offers two levels of specialty shops and destination dining including Pier Restaurants and Hard Rock Cafe. Aquarium of the Bay, RocketBoat (seasonal) and Turbo Ride (a simulation theatre) are popular family attractions. The famous sea lions make their home on K-Dock (seasonal). The Anchorage features a variety of stores, restaurants and activities. Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its Italian seafood restaurants with waterfront views. Vendors along Jefferson Street sell Dungeness crab from steaming cauldrons and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, a signature San Francisco dish. Boudin Museum & Bakery exhibits an array of historic photos and artifacts that detail the history behind the original San Francisco Sourdough. Other activities at Fisherman’s Wharf include bicyle rentals and wine tasting.

r ALC ATRA Z (SF Map: L0) Alcatraz, Spanish for pelican, was named Isla de los Alcatraces after the birds that were the island’s only inhabitants. The island served as a military fortification in the 1850s and an incarceration facility for war prisoners during the Spanish-American War.

In 1934 Alcatraz became the infamous maximumsecurity prison for members of organized crime and high-risk convicts. Famous island residents have included “Machine Gun” Kelly, Al Capone and Robert “Birdman” Stroud. Although the island is only a mile from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers— a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to cold water. A federal penitentiary until 1963, “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero. r GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE (SF Map: D1) The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as International Orange, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings. The two great cables

contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $6 collected when entering San Francisco. Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge) and Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline. The postcard-perfect panorama seen here was captured from the Marin Headlands (the last exit in Marin County before crossing the bridge). The best way to see the bridge is to walk across it which takes about an hour round trip. When walking the bridge dress warmly whatever time of year. City Sights r COIT TO WER (SF Map: N4) Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you’ll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California. For more information go online: www.baycityguide.com/coit_tower

r THE HAIGHT (SF Map: E - F11) The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops, residents, and its

landmark place in history. The style and ingenuity that started in the sixties still rings true today.

r LOMBARD STREET (SF Map: L3-4) Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. The descent begins at Hyde Street.

r VIC TORIANS (SF Map: J5 & G9) Nearly 514 blocks of San Francisco, including much of Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue, were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many beautiful examples of nineteenth-century Victorian architecture were lost in the disaster. Today some 14,000 Victorians have been preserved west of Van Ness Avenue in the Cow

City Sights Hollow, Pacific Heights and Alamo Square districts. Postcard Row is possibly the most photographed spot in the City. These colorful Victorian houses or “Painted Ladies” with the San Francisco skyline in the backdrop have graced many postcards and movie scenes. Capture the view from the center of the park on the edge of Alamo Square at Steiner and Hayes streets.

r THE EMBARC ADERO (SF Map: N - Q6-7) The Embarcadero is a waterfront boulevard lined with elegant palm trees, historic pier structures, hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods. The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are located to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ASTRO (SF Map: F - G13) At the upper end of Market Street is the lively Castro District, an area that caters to its largely gay and lesbian population. The neighborhood, marked by the Castro Theatre marquee, has become a symbol of gay and lesbian pride throughout the world– somewhat of a gay Mecca. Visitors are always welcome in this friendly neighborhood which offers unique shopping and dining. 16

r CHINATO WN (SF Map: M-N5-6) As you pass through the dragonadorned Pagoda Gates on Grant Avenue at Bush Street, your senses will be tempted by the aroma of ethnic cuisine, bright neon and the sound of foreign languages. Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents. Most local Chinese commerce remains along Stockton Street where visitors will find traditional herb pharmacies, temples, fortune cookie factories, garment factories, fresh produce markets, seafood and poultry shops, and many fine restaurants.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake. The quake and the fires that followed destroyed most of the cable car system, and as the City rebuilt, few lines were restored. A municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

City Sights r MARINA DISTRIC T (SF Map: G2) The Marina District was built on lagoon and marshland filled for use during the 1915 PanamaPacific Exhibition which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. Remaining from the Exhibition is the Palace of Fine Arts designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck. Today, the Palace houses the Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum containing 650 interactive exhibits.

r CIVIC CENTER (SF Map: K9) Van Ness Avenue, the widest street in the City, is home to San Francisco’s city government. The gold- domed City Hall (extensively renovated in 1995-1999) was modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The magnificent Asian Art Museum is one of the largest museums in the western world devoted

exclusively to Asian art. The museum’s holdings include nearly 15,000 treasures spanning 6,000 years of history.

r GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL

RECREATION AREA (SF Map: C-E1-4)

One of the largest urban parks in the world, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) encompasses more than 72,000 acres with 28 miles of coastline and includes many of the area’s most popular sights such as Alcatraz, The Presidio, Fort Point, Muir Woods, Marin Headlands, Ocean Beach and many others. GGNRA, a nonprofit organization, works with the National Park Service to preserve the wildlife and natural beauty of this expanse. The Presidio served as a military station for more than 200 years. Union regiments trained here during the Civil War. Approximately 1,600 acres of parks and beaches are located in this northwest corner of the City. City Sights War. Although the fort contains 150 cannons, it was never used for active defense. Today it’s a museum offering daily tours. To reach Fort Point, take a scenic walk along the three-mile Golden Gate Promenade which starts at Aquatic Park, passes Fort Mason and the Marina Green and ends at Fort Point near the base of the Golden Gate Bridge.

r JAPANTO WN (SF Map: H7) Nihonmachi, also known as Japantown, covers seven square blocks. Located in the heart of Japantown is the Japan Center, a shopping and dining complex. Reminiscent of the Tokyo Ginza, Japantown includes restaurants, shops, hotels, a spa and a movie theater. Other points of interest include the 100-foot Peace Pagoda, a gift from Japan.

r UNION SQUARE (SF Map: M7-8) Union Square, a shopper’s paradise of designer boutiques and large department stores, is bounded by Stockton, Powell, Post and Geary streets.

Located around the square are Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany, Niketown, Gucci and many more. Also located nearby (closer to Market Street) is the Westfield San Francisco Centre (home to Bloomingdales and Nordstrom). San Francisco’s theater district is steps from Union Square. The Curran Theatre, Geary Theatre and the Marines Memorial Theatre present works by local artists as well as Broadway hits.

r OCEAN BEACH (SF Map: A7-13) Ocean Beach is a three-mile stretch of Pacific coastline. While not suitable for swimming, the beach is a great place to sunbathe, stroll and view a sunset. City Sights Sutro purchased the Cliff House in in 1881 and converted it to a posh playground for San Francisco’s elite, former presidents and writers such as Mark Twain. Three Cliff House structures were built on this site and each met with similar unfortunate disaster. The current Cliff House sits on a rock perched over the Pacific Ocean with a view of Seal Rocks (a popular hangout for sunbathing seals). North of the Cliff House are the remains of the Sutro Baths, once the world’s largest swimming pool. Seven indoor pools were housed here until the structure burned in 1960.

r UNION STREET (SF Map: G - J4) The “main street” of the Cow Hollow District is renowned for its preserved Victorians (and Edwardians) that now house art galleries, antique stores, boutiques, fine dining and world-class spas.

r MISSION D ISTRIC T (SF Map: H-K13) Immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Mexico and Latin America on Mission Street, where visitors can enjoy lavish murals, savory foods and a dazzling range of traditional and avant-garde art. One of the City’s oldest structures is Mission Dolores, the sixth Franciscan mission along El Camino Real.

r BAY BRIDGE (SF Map: R7) The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and links San Francisco with Contra Costa and Alameda counties by way of an 8.5 mile suspension/cantilever structure. Views of the City’s skyline are spectacular from the bridge, however pedestrians aren’t allowed on the structure. A toll of $4-6 is collected westbound. r

Wine Country y & Beyond y r SONOMA & NAPA Sonoma is regarded as the birthplace of California viticulture. The history of the Sonoma wine industry is closely tied to the early Spanish missionaries. Sonoma is known as having the ideal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. With its mild sunny climate and fertile soil, Sonoma was the perfect setting for the missionaries to plant the first crops of grapes used in making wine for the Holy Eucharist. Later, Count Agoston Haraszthy imported cuttings from Europe and produced the first European varieties in America.

The Napa Valley, a rich and fertile stretch of valley a little over 35 miles in length, is home to almost 300 wineries, most of which line Highway 29. Many of the large wineries offer guided tours of their facilities. There is typically a nominal tasting fee at most wineries ($5-$20 per person), which sometimes includes a souvenir glass and sample tastings.

r C ALISTOGA With its mud baths and natural hot springs, Calistoga is heaven for those who like to be pampered. Relax and soak in a hot tub of mineral water or mud and ash. Most spas offer separate areas for men and women as well as massages, facials and herbal wraps. Calistoga’s other main attraction is Old Faithful Geyser which, on a yearly average, erupts every 40 minutes bursting forth a plume of water 350 degrees hot to approximately 60 feet high. This geyser is in the center of a dormant volcano that erupted over one million years ago and helped shape the Napa Valley. This natural wonder is one of only three Old Faithful Geysers in the world.

r MUIR WOODS Muir Woods is located just 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods–up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. Today the Sequoia sempervirens can be found only in the damp and cool coastal belt that runs from Monterey to Oregon. Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove. The park is home to 50 species of birds, black-tailed deer, steelhead trout and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.” 66

r MONTERE Y & C ARMEL With its wild, rocky coastline and brick cannery buildings, Monterey still maintains much of the flavor of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Boutiques, restaurants and antique stores line historic Cannery Row and the wharf area. Steinbeck fans will enjoy a stop at the Steinbeck Museum located near Cannery Row or the new National Steinbeck Center in nearby Salinas. At the end of the stretch is Monterey’s biggest attraction, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is home to more than 6,500 specimens of marine life indigenous to the Monterey Bay including playful sea otters, graceful sharks, elusive octopus and fierce wolf-eels. The natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula can also be explored at one of the area’s state beaches. Here tidepools, filled with anemones and starfish, are hidden among the rocks. 17 Mile Drive™ is the scenic route between Monterey and Carmel. The road winds along the rugged coast and curves through groves of Monterey Pine and Gowen Cypress trees past the famous Lone Cypress and Pebble Beach Golf Course. An admission to the route is charged but the scenic views are well worth the price. South of Monterey is Carmel, the town where actor Clint Eastwood was once mayor. The seaside scenery has a calming effect on this quaint village. The main shopping district is located on Ocean Avenue (between Junipero and Monte Verde). Carmel resembles an 18th-century European village with narrow streets lined with antique shops, art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. $65 Monterey/Carmel Tour Explore the historic Monterey waterfront, head down to Carmel along the 17 Mile Drive. San Jose is centrally located between San Francisco to the north and Monterey/Carmel to the south.

Wine Country & Beyond San Jose, California’s third largest city, offers museums, dining, shopping, cultural events and attractions such as the Winchester Mystery House. The house was built by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the rifle fortune, who believed that she could amend past wrongdoings and live forever by continuously building onto her house 24 hours a day. The result of Winchester’s occult beliefs is a house made up of narrow passageways, doors that lead nowhere and zigzag staircases.
