MARGARET RIVER REGION ... a destination for all seasons
N
o matter what time of year you visit the Margaret River Region, you
will have a great time. There is so much to see, do and experience … your biggest challenge will be fitting it all in! Swim at pristine beaches, ride the surf, explore an ancient cave, stroll through a tranquil forest, sample world-class wines and beers, savour fine food, marvel at the creative spirit in art galleries, soak up the sounds of live music and browse through lively markets and quirky shops. And that’s just the beginning … The region stretches between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin and incorporates the townships of Busselton, Dunsborough, Yallingup, Cowaramup, Margaret River and Augusta. The Wardandi Noongar people are the traditional owners of the land. They are forest and saltwater people and are strongly connected to the land and sea. At the north of the Capes region, Busselton is nestled on the sandy shores of Geographe Bay and is the business hub. Visit the Busselton Jetty and its amazing Underwater Observatory or indulge in fishing or water sports in the bay. Further west is Dunsborough, with its sheltered beaches and picnic areas perfect for family outings, fishing, kayaking and other water sports. Visit the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and see the humpback whales in Geographe Bay from September to early December. Or head to Yallingup for some pounding surf, lovely coastal walks and stunning sunsets. Heading south, discover Cowaramup - a bustling little centre known affectionately by the locals as “Cowtown”. Have your photo taken with the life-size fibreglass cows in the streets, pause for a coffee and then wander through some of the town’s interesting shops. And if you thought the town was so-named because of the cows and dairy industry, think again (see “What’s Up?” p4). Then it’s on to Margaret River, best known for its wine and surf. And there is so much more to this town which has interesting shops, galleries and boutiques to browse, and restaurants, bars and cafés that provide some of the region’s best live music and nightlife. There’s lots to see and do: stroll through ROCKY COASTLINE AT GRACETOWN www.randomlightsphotography.com forest along the banks of the Margaret River, cycle tracks, try stand-up paddling, enjoy a gourmet dinner, or catch a show at Arts Margaret River. At the southern end of the Cape is Augusta, home to the historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. EMERGENCY CONTACTS It’s a top spot for river or ocean fishing, kiteboarding, kayaking, snorkelling and swimming. And it’s Dial 000 for Police, Ambulance, Fire and the best place for whale watching from June-August. Emergency Services SPECIAL EVENTS The region hosts a range of special events throughout the year (see Calendar of Events p8). Augusta Hospital There are also colourful weekend markets (see p6). NATURE LOVERS
There are lots of places to enjoy a peaceful stroll or cycle through the bush and forests in this region, or along the coast. Hike a section of the Cape to Cape Track (or challenge yourself and do the whole 140km from Dunsborough to Augusta), walk the Meelup Reserve Trail near Dunsborough, stroll through Boranup Forest just north of Hamelin Bay, wander or pedal along the Rails to Trails (Cowaramup to south of Margaret River) or explore the Busselton to Dunsborough bike/walk path. Or you might want to sleep under the stars (see Camping Guide p30).
WHAT’S “UP”?
Many visitors are curious to know why so many towns in this region end in “up”. The origin of these names can be traced back to the traditional owners of the land, the Noongar people. The “up” means “place of”. SO: • Yallingup means “place of love” • Cowaramup means “place of the cowara” (an Aboriginal word for the purple-crowned lorikeet) • Quindalup means “place of quendas” (also known as Southern Brown Bandicoots) • Nannup means “stopping place”.
PUBLIC TOILETS Public toilets are available throughout the region at all Visitor Centres, most tourist attractions (e.g. caves, lighthouses), most popular beach carparks, parks and picnic sites, campgrounds, recreation centres and petrol stations. For a full list and map: www.toiletmap.gov.au.
MARGARET RIVER REGION WINTER WATER
WEATHER
TIME ZONES
The Margaret River region enjoys a mild Mediterreanean climate so it’s a great place to visit any time of the year. In Summer (December-February), average maximum temperatures are 25-30 degrees Celsius. Days are generally warm and sunny and there is little rain (just right for heading to the beach or for a bushwalk). Nights can be cool, so take a light jacket if you’re heading out in the evenings. In Autumn (March-May), the days get a bit cooler and are often sunny, warm and calm with little wind. Nights can be cool to cold. Winter (June-August) is the rainy season, yet there are often still plenty of glorious sunny days, with temperatures around 16-18 degrees Celsius. Mornings and evenings are cooler, with temperatures falling to around 8 degrees Celsius. It’s a great time to see migrating whales in Augusta and enjoy a log fire and a glass of red wine. In Spring (September-November), temperatures are mild and days start to get longer and warmer. This is the season for stunning displays of wildflowers and to see whales in Geographe Bay near Dunsborough.
Western Australia is in the time zone known as Australian Western Standard Time and is GMT + 8:00. Other States in Australia are 1.5 to 3 hours ahead of WA (depending on season). the region that meander through picturesque countryside. However, please be careful and travel at a suitable speed for road and weather conditions. To make your day out as enjoyable as possible, consider the following tips: • Make sure to only pull over or off the road at safe locations • Allow plenty of time to enjoy each attraction so you don’t feel rushed • Learn more about the featured venues in the scenic drive routes by referring to the relevant section in the Guide • Double check opening hours as they can vary throughout the year • Pre-book your table for lunch or dinner during peak holiday seasons and long weekends. Busselton Accom Options: Four Seasons Holiday Park, Mandalay Holiday Resort & Tourist Park Start your tour at the Busselton beachfront, and admire the views over magnificent Geographe Bay. Go for a brisk walk out on the Busselton Jetty to enjoy some fresh salt air or climb aboard the Jetty Train. Either way, you will be astounded by the spectacular marine life you can view from the giant undersea windows in the Underwater Observatory. On your return, walk or drive into town to visit the Art Geo Cultural Complex for a mix of art, heritage and culture. Take an audio tour of this old courthouse that is now a modern-day art gallery or wander around the town’s main shopping precinct and absorb the village ambience and specialty stores of Fig Tree Lane. When you are ready, drive south along Busselton Bypass and take a left turn onto Lakeview Boulevard at Vasse Estate. Less than 10 minutes from town centre, you will discover The Fat Chef Café. Both kid and dog friendly, you are assured of a warm welcome and tasty café style food in the charming vintage surrounds. Retrace back to the Bypass and continue south, turning right at the Vasse Roundabout. When you reach the Caves Road roundabout, turn left and you will find The Shed Markets (open Thu-Sun) a perfect spot for organic / wholefood produce and a boho vibe. Enjoy some tasty Eat Street tucker for lunch (Thu-Sun) or dinner (Fri til 8pm) or forage for a bargain. Continue on towards Dunsborough via Caves Road and mid-way, on your left at the corner of Chain Avenue, you will find Flametree Wines. Take some time to enjoy the stunning cellar door ambience, award winning wines and a platter of quality local produce. Return to town via Caves Road/Bussell Highway. Just before the cinema, and in one of Busselton’s oldest heritage buildings, you’ll find Shabby Duck Studio, where furniture is transformed from old to new, workshops are held and where Shabby Chic meets French Provincial Home Decor and Gifts.
Under sparkling chandeliers, this pretty shop combines sophisticated charm with a creative spirit and is well worth a visit. Stay a while to be spoilt with a traditional English Devonshire Tea in the 1899 Vintage Tea Room. Don’t miss the unique opportunity to see migrating whales during your stay (Jun-Dec). Why not book your tour early with Legend Charters and ensure you experience getting up close and personal with these remarkable creatures of the deep? Dunsborough-Yallingup Accom Options: Whalers Cove Villas Start in Dunsborough, then head west along Caves Road to Yallingup to kick start your metabolism with an inspiring walk along this world famous beach. Afterwards, retrace your journey and turn south at the old Yallingup Hall onto Caves Road. Down a way, turn right at Canal Rocks Road. Visit Smith’s Beach and see the interesting rock formations at Canal Rocks. Back at the Caves Road intersection, turn right and continue south on Caves Road until you reach Clairault | Streicker for wine tasting or a memorable lunch. Once replete, return north along Caves Road and turn right into Wildwood Road. Down a way is Yallingup Shearing Shed situated on one of the region’s original dairy farms. Wander around the old shearing shed and check out the stylish merino wool fashions or pick up a pair of snuggly Ugg boots. Turn left as you come out of the gate and enjoy a slow drive down the winding Wildwood Road. Turn right onto Abbey Farm Road and follow the signs to John Streater Fine Furniture. John’s bespoke furniture is showcased alongside other internationally recognised artists at his gallery. Return to Wildwood Road, and further along discover Anniebrook Wine & Flower Emporium’s profusion of silk flowers, unique gifts, wine tasting and ever-popular scones and cream at the Farm Café. Turn right onto Wildwood Road, and then left into Chain Avenue for a lovely drive through tall trees back to Caves Road. Turn left to Dunsborough and call into Squid Lips to order your dinner with a gourmet twist! If this day out has whet your appetite, you might like to relax and be hosted by Harvest Tours for another day of exploration at a range of other popular attractions in the northern part of the region. Metricup - Gracetown - Cowaramup Accom Options: Taunton Farm Holiday Park, Forest Rise Eco Retreat Start your tour at the little historic timber church on the corner of Metricup Road and Bussell Highway north of Cowaramup. Travel west along Metricup Road and stop off at Knotting Hill Estate where you walk across a 45m foot bridge to get to the limestone cellar door. Sample some wines and perhaps indulge in a selection from their tapas or platter menu while enjoying a spectacular view of the lake. You might also want to plan a return visit for their annual
FISHING - PEACE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Marron Feast in June each year. Next stop is Woody Nook Wines a little further down the road. With a lovely forest backdrop and charming, rustic décor, the Nookery Café is an ideal place to pause for lunch or a coffee and snack. On a sunny day, you can sit outside - or cosy up indoors if it’s raining. Make sure you try their Nooky Delight Port and perhaps take a bottle home for the perfect nightcap at the end of your day. Enjoy the farmland vistas as you continue to the end of Metricup Road. Turn left at Caves Road and drive south, then turn right into Cowaramup Bay Road to the seaside village of Gracetown. There are some famous surf breaks here and the main beach area in the bay is a great spot for families with young children to picnic and swim. The Cape to Cape Track (a long-distance walk trail) passes through here and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along part of it to enjoy some spectacular coastal views. Next, head back to Caves Road and go straight across on Cowaramup Bay Road. A little way down, turn left into Fifty One Road and follow the road and signs to Cape Grace Wines – one of the region’s great little wineries. In their rustic tin shed cellar door, taste red wines that are gently hand plunged and basket pressed. Then say g’day to the parrots outside … and you might be lucky enough to spot a Great Egret (featured on the Cape Grace wine label) that occasionally visits the dam. Return to Cowaramup Bay Road and turn left back to Bussell Highway. Gnarabup-Margaret River Accom options: Riverview Tourist Park Make your way to Gnarabup Beach just south of Prevelly Park and start your day with a stunning walk along the top of the dunes with spectacular views north to Surfer’s Point. Turn right out of the beach carpark and travel down to Resort Place to check out the funky new surf shop Fresh Tracks. Coming out of Resort Place, turn right onto Wallcliffe Road and then left into Mitchell Drive to follow the coast to Prevelly. At the t-junction, turn left to go to Surfer’s Point. Get out of the car here to admire the view, smell the salt air and see the surfers catching the waves. Then continue through the carpark down to the Margaret

River mouth and pick up a cave and canoe tour with Bushtucker Tours. It’s a scenic adventure paddling up the Margaret River to spot some wildlife and explore caves, river and cliffs. From the rivermouth, return to Wallcliffe Road and turn left to head back into Margaret River town. Close to town, you will pass the Margaret River Cultural Centre on your right (next door to the shire office) where you can catch the latest movies, theatre productions, live performances and art exhibitions at Arts Margaret River. On Bussell Highway in the town’s main street is Jah Roc Galleries where you can discover an amazing collection of fine furniture and contemporary art. And just up the road from there (opposite Settler’s Tavern) is Walkabout Souvenirs where you can buy mementos, gifts and souvenirs for the people back home. Margaret River - Augusta From Margaret River, point the car south and take a right turn at the Boodjidup Road roundabout. Along this road, discover Eagles Heritage Raptor Wildlife Centre which offers a fascinating insight into the lives of these magnificent birds of prey. Arrive in time for one of the flying displays, daily at 11am and 1.30pm. Continue down Boodjidup Road and turn left into Caves Road at the intersection. A leisurely drive south will take you to Calgardup and Giants Caves. Travelling further south, stop off to admire the amazing fine furniture, jewellery, art, glass and sculpture at Boranup Gallery and enjoy coffee/tea, cake or lunch at the on-site café. Turn left out of the driveway and just a little further south, deviate off the highway onto scenic Boranup Drive to take in the timeless beauty of the tall karri trees. Then continue your scenic drive south to Augusta and pause for lunch at the Augusta Bakery & Café with sweeping views of the Blackwood River. With renewed energy, call in to the Augusta Historical Museum before heading out to the southernmost point of Cape Leeuwin where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Tour the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse or take a self-guided audio tour of the lighthouse precinct. capesguide.com.au • 11

Calgardup Cave (approx 15km from Margaret River) offers an easy self-guided torchlight tour. Moving along an elevated boardwalk and stairs, visitors of all ages may discover for themselves the wonders of this beautiful cave. It offers viewing of calcite crystal deposits, including exquisite and fragile straws, walls of tiered flowstone and magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. cave to visit, and it really is difficult to answer. Each is different and has its own unique story and individual charm. There are over 100 caves in the Margaret River region between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, some small and others extremely large. You will enjoy your visit to the caves more if you don’t have too much to carry and remember, whatever the weather above ground, underground is a constant temperature of 17-19 degrees.
(approx 20km south of Margaret River) offers a self-guided experience for the more adventurous visitor. A reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear are needed as visitors scramble over rocks and negotiate a series of ladders. This is one of the deepest caves in the district and also features extremely large chambers. Although it is a cave of awesome proportions, the route is clearly marked and it is not possible to get lost. It is easy to imagine what a daunting experience the first intrepid explorer of Giants would have had! (see Advert p16)

REGIONAL LIGHTHOUSES
H
istorically, lighthouses played a vital role in safe shipping – and they still do. The region’s two working lighthouses provide a glimpse of history and some great views of the coast! Each lighthouse around the world has its own distinct flash and it is fascinating to learn how, before electricity, the keepers managed to keep the lamp lit. Visit Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse on the northern tip of the Cape for panoramic views across Geographe Bay and the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park. It’s open every day from 9am-5pm, with guided tours every half hour from 9.30am-4.30pm. At the other end of the Cape, you can see where the Southern Ocean meets the Indian Ocean from the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at Augusta. It’s open every day from 8.45am-4.30pm with guided tours every half hour from 9am-4pm. Or you may choose to do a self-guided audio tour of the lighthouse precinct. You can book a tour at the lighthouses or visitor centres. (Both lighthouses are closed Christmas Day.) The two lighthouses mark the start and finish of the Cape to Cape Track.

rt lovers can get up close and personal with artists at the annual
Margaret River Region Open Studios event to be held 28 April - 13 May 2018. This art event, which is the biggest in Western Australia, offers art lovers a vibrant feast of visual art. As the name suggests, Open Studios offers the rare chance to visit private art studios which may not otherwise be open to the public, meet and talk to artists and view their works in progress. You can explore the region while visiting the studios of up to 120 established and emerging artists working across many art categories including painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers, photographers, textile artists, furniture makers and environmentally focused up-cycling artists.
EST 1987
Designer and Master Craftsman of Bespoke Furniture
Visit as many studios as you like during the 16-day event. Entry is free and artworks are available to buy. Visitors can also purchase the Artists of the Margaret River Region (M&P Publishing). Published in 2016 by award-winning writers Carmen Jenner and Gabi Mills, the beautifully produced book features over 70 artists living and working in the Margaret River Region.

JINDONG TREETO
A
f you’re a “foodie” then you’re in for a real treat as you travel around the South West Capes region. Here, you can get inside the farm gate and talk to growers and producers bringing their goods to your table. If you have limited time, head to one of the weekend farmers’ markets (see p6) - or you might be lucky enough to be here when a food festival is in full swing (see p26). And for meandering gourmets, let our leisurely food trails tempt you. Food Trail #1 - in and around Vasse / Yallingup Market place and sweet treats 1. Find your way to The Shed Markets at the Caves Road roundabout (where Bussell Highway becomes Caves Road). Here you can select from a range of tempting organic and wholefood produce. On Friday evenings, enjoy some tasty Eat Street tucker or forage for a bargain at the Twilight Markets (Nov-Feb). 2. Then head west towards Yallingup on Caves Road and turn left at Yallingup Hall to drive south. Turn right at Canal Rocks Road to find Barnyard 1978. 3. Continue south on Caves Road to Gabriel Chocolate at the corner of Quininup Road. 4. Cross Caves Road to Abbeys Farm Road and follow this to the T-junction at Wildwood Road. Turn left to find Wulura Farms. 5. Continue west on Wildwood Road, then turn right at Commonage Road, following the road around until you find Simmo’s Ice Creamery. 6. From here, continue down Commonage Road, and turn left to return to Dunsborough or right to head into Busselton. MAP GRID REF REF

Food Trail #2 - in and around Cowaramup Beautiful breakfast and pantry provisions 1. Start your tour in Cowaramup’s Black Sheep Deli with a delicious and different breakfast (the Indonesian-inspired vegetarian Nasi Goreng is a favourite). Between the petrol station and butcher, this café opens weekdays at 6am and weekends at 7am. While you’re here enjoy a slice of raw or gluten-free cake with a freshly-made juice or smoothie while you chat to the locals. Or pick up a tub of local honey, some organic fruit and vegetables and a loaf of woodfired bread. 2. Head north towards Busselton to the Margaret River Dairy Company on Bussell Highway near Harman’s Mill Road. Try their handcrafted cheeses and perhaps buy some to add to your picnic basket. 3. Turn off the highway onto Harman’s Mill Road and stop off at Margaret River Nuts and Cereals. 4. Turn left back onto Harman’s Mill Road, and then turn left at Tom Cullity Drive. Continue south on this road and at the corner of Miamup Road you’ll discover a real sweet treat – Bettenay’s Margaret River Nougat Company. In their tasting room, you can view the production process, learn the history of nougat and taste their award-winning, soft, French-style nougat. And don’t forget to try their Nougaretto (a nougat liqueur), new Chocolatto (a dark chocolate Port) and Vermaux (a Vermouth infused with Australian Botanicals). Take time out here to relax with a picnic platter on the lawn overlooking the lake. 5. You want more? Continue down Miamup Road and turn left back to Cowaramup. In town, find the Margaret River Regional Wine Centre, where you can taste wines from some of the
region’s small select vineyards. You can also custom-select a mixed case of local wines and have it shipped to anywhere in the world, or simply buy a bottle of wine or a few beers to enjoy at the end of your day.

Food Trail #4 - the Organic Garden Trail Inspiring Community gardens 1. This tour is centred in Margaret River town. Start at the Margaret River Community Resource Centre (33 Tunbridge Street) to see organic gardens surrounding the historic buildings. 2. From here, walk behind to enjoy the Margaret River Library’s small bio-dynamic garden that is tended by volunteers and planted according to the seasons. It is open during library hours Monday-Saturday. 3. Back in your car, return to Bussell Highway and turn right, heading south. Just past the high school on the right you will see the Margaret River Organic Garden. Started in 1988, this organic community garden is planted and tended by volunteers. 4. Turn back towards town and turn right into Forrest Road. On the corner is the Margaret River Primary School kitchen garden. It aims to teach students how to grow fresh, seasonal, organic produce and use it to prepare healthy food. View the garden from the footpath or tour by appointment T: (08) 9757 2666.

6. Food Trail #3 - in and around Margaret River Fine Chocolates, markets and more 1. Start your tour in Margaret River town. Head south on Bussell Highway and if it’s Saturday, call in to the Margaret River Farmer’s Market. Or continue south on the highway and turn right at the Boodjidup Road roundabout to find Margaret River Woodfired Bread a little way down on the left. 2. Go back to the roundabout and turn right onto Bussell Highway. Head south to the Rosa Brook Road intersection. On the corner here, be tempted by Temper Temper Chocolatier. Take a chocolate discovery tour (by appointment) and enjoy free tastings of their fine chocolate. Don’t miss the new Temper Temper Venezuela – a dark chocolate with notes of licorice, roasted coffee, a hint of prune and back tea finish. Linger longer and relax in their café with an extraordinary hot chocolate. 3. Coming out of the gate, turn right onto Rosa Brook Road and continue for several kilometres, then turn right onto Rosa Glen Road. Travel down to Bessell Road to discover The Berry Farm. 4. Go back to Rosa Brook Road and turn right. Continue through Rosa Brook township, then turn left into Jindong Treeton Road and then left again onto Osmington Road. Enjoy a slow, winding country drive back to Bussell Highway, perhaps stopping off at Colonial Brewing Co. on the way for a cold drink and something to eat on their deck. Once back at the highway, turn left to Margaret River or right to Busselton.

Do you enjoy a cold glass of beer or cider on a summer’s day while sitting on a lawn listening to some chilled-out tunes? Get along to the South West Craft Beer Festival in Busselton in February. The festival will showcase more than 80 refreshing local brews - and if beer is not your thing, try some craft ciders or local wines. There’s plenty of food available and buses to transport you to the venue. There’s also plenty of parking – just remember to appoint a designated driver. www.swbeerfest.com.au

Nannup gets its name from the Noongar people and means “stopping place”. Pause here to visit the Marinko Tomas Memorial where there are picnic and barbecue facilities and a children’s playground. For the more adventurous, go for a ride on the Munda Biddi Cycle Trail, enjoy a bushwalk on the Bibbulmun Track or Timberline Trail, paddle the Blackwood River and, if it’s warm, take a dip at Barrabup Pool. Camping is also available at Barrabup and Worker’s Pool. Coming from the north, make sure you stop at Cambray Sheep Cheese. A warm welcome awaits you at this family-run working dairy where award-winning sheep cheeses can be sampled and purchased from the farm shop. Based on French recipes, all cheeses are handmade, each with a unique flavour, strength and texture. With more than 30 types of cheeses, the range includes soft and
