MARGARET RIVER REGION ... a destination for all seasons

N

o matter what time of year you visit the Margaret River Region, you will have a great time. There is so much to see, do and experience … your biggest challenge will be fitting it all in! Swim at pristine beaches, ride the surf, explore an ancient cave, stroll through a tranquil forest, sample world-class wines and beers, savour fine food, marvel at the creative spirit in art galleries, soak up the sounds of live music and browse through lively markets and quirky shops. And that’s just the beginning … The region stretches between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin and incorporates the townships of Busselton, Dunsborough, Yallingup, Cowaramup, Margaret River and Augusta. The Wadandi Noongar people are the traditional owners of the land. They are forest and saltwater people and are strongly connected to the land and sea. At the north of the Capes region, Busselton is nestled on the sandy shores of Geographe Bay and is the business hub. Visit the Busselton Jetty and its amazing Underwater Observatory or indulge in fishing or water sports in the bay. Further west is Dunsborough, with its sheltered beaches and picnic areas perfect for family outings, fishing, kayaking and other water sports. Visit the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and see the humpback whales in Geographe Bay from September to early December. Or head to Yallingup for some pounding surf, lovely coastal walks and stunning sunsets. Heading south, discover Cowaramup - a bustling little centre known affectionately by the locals as “Cowtown”. Have your photo taken with the life-size fibreglass cows in the streets, pause for a coffee and then wander through some of the town’s interesting shops. And if you thought the town was so-named because of the cows and dairy CAPE LEEUWIN LIGHTHOUSE www.randomlightsphotography.com industry, think again (see “What’s Up?” p4). Then it’s on to Margaret River, best known for its wine and surf. And there is so EMERGENCY CONTACTS much more to this town which has interesting shops, galleries and boutiques to browse, and restaurants, bars and cafés that provide some of the region’s best live music and Dial 000 for Police, Ambulance, Fire and Emergency Services nightlife. There’s lots to see and do: stroll through forest along the banks of the Margaret River, cycle tracks, try stand-up paddling, enjoy a gourmet dinner, or catch a show at Arts Augusta Hospital Margaret River. There are also colourful weekend markets (see p7). ART, MUSIC AND CULTURE An incredible range of quality art is produced by the region’s artisans. WINE, BEER AND FOOD If you’re a lover of fine wine, cold beer and exceptional food, you may need to extend your stay in this region! There is so much to savour, taste and sample. See Dining Guide (p18-19), Food Trails (p20-21), Cellar Door Guide (p22-24), and Brewery & Distillery Guide (p24-25). Hike a section of the Cape to Cape Track (or challenge yourself and do the whole 140km from Dunsborough to Augusta), walk the Meelup Reserve Trail near Dunsborough, stroll through Boranup Forest just north of Hamelin Bay, wander or pedal along the Rails to Trails (Cowaramup to south of Margaret River) or explore the Busselton to Dunsborough bike/walk path. Or you might want to sleep under the stars (see Camping Guide p14). WHAT’S “UP”?

Many visitors are curious to know why so many towns in this region end in “up”. The origin of these names can be traced back to the traditional owners of the land, the Noongar people. The “up” means “place of”. SO: • Yallingup means “place of love” • Cowaramup means “place of the cowara” (an Aboriginal word for the purple-crowned lorikeet) • Quindalup means “place of quendas” (also known as Southern Brown Bandicoots) • Nannup means “stopping place”. MARGARET RIVER REGION

WEATHER

The Margaret River region enjoys a mild Mediterreanean climate so it’s a great place to visit any time of the year. In Summer (December-February), average maximum temperatures are 25-30 degrees Celsius. Days are generally warm and sunny and there is little rain (just right for heading to the beach or for a bushwalk). Nights can be cool, so take a light jacket if you’re heading out in the evenings. In Autumn (March-May), the days get a bit cooler and are often sunny, warm and calm with little wind. Nights can be cool to cold. Winter (June-August) is the rainy season, yet there are often still plenty of glorious sunny days, with temperatures around 16-18 degrees Celsius. Mornings and evenings are cooler, with temperatures falling to around 8 degrees Celsius. It’s a great time to see migrating whales in Augusta and enjoy a log fire and a glass of red wine. In Spring (September-November), temperatures are mild and days start to get longer and warmer. This is the season for stunning displays of wildflowers and to see whales in Geographe Bay near Dunsborough. PUBLIC TOILETS Public toilets are available throughout the region at all Visitor Centres, most tourist attractions (e.g. caves, lighthouses), most popular beach carparks, parks and picnic sites, campgrounds, recreation centres and petrol stations. For a full list and map: www.toiletmap.gov.au.

And, of course, you’ll have to wear a cow “onesie” if you really want to get into the spirit of things. The Cowlympics follows last year’s Guinness World Record breaking Cow Muster and the Cowtown Cow Conga. Cowlympics competitors will be given a passport and move between a series of events including milk bottle skittles, gumboot tossing and cowpat discus to name a few. Complete as many events as you can to fill up your passport with stamps and who knows … you might win a prize! There will also be food and market stalls and fun activities for the kids. It’s a great day out for the whole family in the school holidays.

I

N

Don’t miss the Garden to Gourmet workshops on Friday 19 August, followed by the Gardeners Community Dinner in the evening. There’s a jam-packed program for the weekend and those who linger until Sunday afternoon will have the chance to buy some of the colourful tulips and other flowering bulbs from the displays. SCENIC DRIVES

Scenic Route Map

here are some wonderful tourist drives in the region that meander through picturesque countryside. However, please be careful and travel at a suitable speed for road and weather conditions. To make your day out as enjoyable as possible, consider the following tips: • Make sure to only pull over or off the road at safe locations • Refer to the Tourism Information Bays at key intersections • Allow plenty of time to enjoy each attraction so you don’t feel rushed • Refer to our Attractions Guide map (p10) for locations of attractions featured in scenic drive routes • Double check opening hours as they can vary throughout the year • Pre-book your table for lunch or dinner during peak holiday seasons and long weekends • Make sure to lock when you leave your vehicle.

Busselton Accom Options: Busselton Beach Resort, Four Seasons Holiday Park Start your tour at the Busselton Visitor Centre on the beachfront near the Busselton Jetty and admire the view over magnificent Geographe Bay. Go for a brisk walk out on the Jetty to enjoy some fresh salt air or climb aboard the Jetty Train. Either way you will be astounded by the spectacular marine life you can view from the giant underwater windows in the Underwater Observatory. On your return, walk or drive into town to visit the Art Geo Cultural Complex for a mix of art, heritage and culture. Take an audio tour of this old courthouse that is now a modern-day art gallery. Then wander around the town’s main shopping precinct. There are some interesting specialty stores in the charming Fig Tree Lane and a range of cafés where you can replenish your energy with some morning or afternoon tea. Back in your car, head down Bussell Highway towards Dunsborough and turn left at the Monaghan’s Corner roundabout. Further down this road, you can check out the new Vasse Newtown residential development before making your way back into town via the Busselton Bypass. Dunsborough-Yallingup Starting in Dunsborough, head south west along Caves Road to Yallingup where you can kick start your metabolism with an inspiring walk along Yallingup Beach. Then turn off at the old Yallingup Hall and travel south, turning right at Canal Rocks Road. Visit Smith’s Beach and see the interesting rock formations at Canal Rocks.

Back at the Caves Road intersection, turn right and then left into Wildwood Road. You simply must call in to the Yallingup Shearing Shed that is a few kilometres down this road on the left. Here at what was one of the region’s original dairy farms, you can see a shearing demonstration and watch trained sheepdogs work (11am Sat-Wed). Afterwards, take your time and try on some of the stylish merino wool fashions in the shop or pick up a pair of snuggly Ugg boots or a souvenir to take home. Turn left as you come out of the gate and enjoy a slow drive down the winding Wildwood Road. Some distance down on the right you will discover Anniebrook Wine & Flower Emporium which has a range of unique giftboxes and wine. Turn right onto Wildwood Road, and then left into Chain Avenue for a lovely drive through tall trees back to Caves Road. Turn left to return to Dunsborough for some retail therapy at One Palm – a funky new boutique right in the centre of town. Along the way, those with kids on board might like to burn off some energy at the Xscape at the Cape Fun Park. And if all this has built up an appetite, make your way to Peko Peko in town for some feel good food. From here you can extend your tour by heading north west out of town to magnificent Meelup and Eagle Bay. The famous HMAS Swan was scuttled off Meelup Bay in 1997 and has since become a major tourist attraction as a dive wreck. Carry on to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse where a guided tour will give you a fascinating insight into the maritime history of the area. The views from the top are stunning and it is an excellent place to spot some whales from AugustDecember. Return along the same road back to Dunsborough. Metricup - Gracetown Accom Options: Taunton Farm Holiday Park, Forest Rise Eco Retreat Start your tour at the little historic timber church on the corner of Metricup Road and Bussell Highway north of Cowaramup. Travel west along Metricup Road and stop off at Knotting Hill Estate where you walk across a 45m foot bridge to get to the limestone cellar door. Sample some wines and perhaps indulge in a selection from their tapas or platter menu while enjoying a spectacular view of the lake. You might also want to plan a return visit for their annual Marron Feast in June each year. Next stop is Woody Nook Wines a little further down the road. With a lovely forest backdrop and charming, rustic décor, the Nookery Café is an ideal place to pause for

BORANUP FOREST

lunch or a coffee and snack. On a sunny day, you can sit outside - or cosy up indoors if it’s raining. Make sure you try their Nooky Delight port and perhaps take a bottle home for the perfect nightcap at the end of your day. Enjoy the farmland vistas as you continue to the end of Metricup Road. At the Caves Road intersection you will find Woodlands Wines – one of the first five wineries established in the Margaret River region. Since then, they have established a reputation for exceptional wine. Their “Thomas” 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded Wine of the Year in Ray Jordan’s West Australian Wine Guide 2016 – a great honour indeed. Woodlands’ cellar door is always open and you can take a winery tour by appointment. From here, drive south on Caves Road and turn right into Cowaramup Bay Road to the seaside village of Gracetown. There are some famous surf breaks here and the main beach area in the bay is a great spot for families with young children to picnic and swim. The Cape to Cape Track (a long-distance walk trail) passes through here and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along part of it to enjoy some spectacular coastal views. Prevelly-Margaret River Accom options: Riverview Tourist Park Make your way to Gnarabup Beach just south of Prevelly Park and start your day with a stunning walk along the top of the dunes with spectacular views north to Surfer’s Point. Then head east on Wallcliffe Road into Margaret River town to see some of the stunning art on display at Margaret River Gallery (on Charles West Avenue one street back from Bussell Highway and just up the road from the Visitor Centre). New exhibitions are being staged all the time so there’s always something different to see. Then make your way to Bussell Highway to Jah Roc to discover an amazing collec-

www.randomlightsphotography.com

tion of fine furniture and contemporary art. The gallery is home to award-winning Jah Roc Furniture who use local jarrah and marri timbers to hand craft their beautiful furniture. Just up the road from Jah Roc is Boutique Eco – a natural fashion concept store where you can find pure and natural leather, bamboo and wool products for casual wear. There are also homewares, beauty products and other essentials. Margaret River - Augusta From Margaret River, point the car south and take a right turn at the Boodjidup Road roundabout. Along this road you will discover Eagles Heritage Raptor Wildlife Centre which offers a fascinating insight into the lives of these magnificent birds of prey. Make sure to arrive in time for one of the twice daily flying displays. Continue down Boodjidup Road and turn left into Caves Road at the intersection. Take a leisurely drive south and you will soon see the turn off for Calgardup Cave. Call into the visitor centre and learn more about the cave network of this area and decide if you are adventurous enough to tackle Giants Cave too! Travelling further south, deviate off the highway onto the scenic Boranup Drive to take in the timeless beauty of the tall karri trees. If you wish, continue your scenic drive south to Hamelin Bay - an extremely popular spot during the summer. Then follow the road to Augusta where you can call in to the Augusta Historical Museum before heading out to the southernmost point of Cape Leeuwin to tour the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. If you have time, consider staying overnight in Augusta to take a whale watching tour with Naturaliste Charters the next morning. Whale watching season runs from June-September at this end of the Cape. capesguide.com.au • 9

CAVES OF THE MARGARET RIVER REGION

M

any people ask which is the best cave to visit, and it really is difficult to answer. Each is different and has its own unique story and individual charm. There are over 100 caves in the Margaret River region between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, some small and others extremely large. You will enjoy your visit to the caves more if you don’t have too much to carry and remember, whatever the weather above ground, underground is a constant temperature of 17-19 degrees. Calgardup Cave (approx 15km from Margaret River) offers an easy self-guided torchlight tour. Moving along an elevated boardwalk and stairs, visitors of all ages may discover for themselves the wonders of this beautiful cave. It offers viewing of calcite crystal deposits, including exquisite and fragile straws, walls of tiered flowstone and magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. Calgardup’s features include a wide shallow lake (seasonal) in which

visitors can play with torchlight reflections and create wondrous effects. (see Advert p13) Giants Cave, which is nestled amongst the magnificent Karri trees of Boranup Forest (approx 20km south of Margaret River) offers a self-guided experience for the more adventurous visitor. A reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear are needed as visitors scramble over rocks and negotiate a series of ladders. This is one of the deepest caves in the district and also features extremely large chambers. Although it is a cave of awesome proportions, the route is clearly marked and it is not possible to get lost. It is easy to imagine what a daunting experience the first intrepid explorer of Giants would have had! (see Advert p13) Visit Ngilgi Cave, Yallingup to learn the fascinating Aboriginal Dreamtime story of the good spirit Ngilgi. Ngilgi Cave is open every day from 9am to 5pm.

Jewel Cave, an underground maze of mystery and beauty, offers guided tours daily and is situated 8km north of Augusta and 37km from Margaret River. Lake Cave offers guided tours and is located 25km from Margaret River and 29km north of Augusta. It has an amazing sunken entrance and a unique "Suspended Table" formation which weighs several tonnes and seems to defy gravity. Mammoth Cave is situated 21km south of Margaret River and 33km north of Augusta and features an audio self-guided tour which takes approx 1 hour to complete. Mammoth is also one of the few caves in Australia with partial wheelchair access.

REGIONAL LIGHTHOUSES

H

istorically, lighthouses played a vital role in safe shipping – and they still do. The region’s two working lighthouses provide a glimpse of history and some great views of the coast! Each lighthouse around the world has its own distinct flash and it is fascinating to learn how, before electricity, the keepers managed to keep the lamp lit. Visit Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse on the northern tip of the Cape for panoramic views across Geographe Bay and the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park. It’s open every day from 9am-5pm, with guided tours every half hour from 9.30am-4.30pm. At the other end of the Cape, you can see where the Southern Ocean meets the Indian Ocean from the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at Augusta. It’s open every day from 8.45am-5pm with guided tours every half hour from 9am-4.30pm. Or you may choose to do a self-guided audio tour of the lighthouse precinct. You can book a tour at the lighthouses or visitor centres on T: (08) 9757 7411. (Both lighthouses are closed Christmas Day.)

CREATIVE SPIRITS

A

rt lovers can get up close and personal with artists at the annual Margaret River Region Open Studios event held in April each year. As the name suggests, Open Studios offers the rare chance to visit private art studios which may not otherwise be open to the public, meet and talk to artists and view their works in progress. You can explore the region while visiting the studios of up to 120 established and emerging artists working across many art categories including painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers, photographers, textile artists, furniture makers and environmentally focused up-cycling artists. Visit as many studios as you like during the 16-day event. Entry is free and artworks are available to buy. Pick up an event catalogue at visitor centres or visit www.mrros.com.au. If you’re visiting the region at another time, some artists may still welcome you to visit if you call and ask. Alternatively, see some outstanding art that is on display at the Art Geo Cultural Complex in Busselton, the Jah Roc Gallery and Margaret River Gallery in Margaret River town, or by appointment with Icons by Marice, Yallingup.

JINDONG TREETO

f you’re a “foodie” then you’re in for a real treat as you travel around the South West Capes region. Here, you can get inside the farm gate and talk to growers and producers bringing their goods to your table. If you have limited time, head to one of the weekend farmers’ markets (see p7) - or you might be lucky enough to be here when a food festival is in full swing (see p21). And for meandering gourmets, let our leisurely food trails tempt you. Take your time, savour every taste sensation and enjoy the beauty of this region along the way. Food Trail #1 - in and around Dunsborough / Yallingup Sweet treats and dipping delights 1. Head out of Dunsborough on Caves Road and turn left at Yallingup Hall to continue south on Caves Road. Turn right at Canal Rocks Road to find Barnyard 1978. 2. Continue south on Caves Road to Gabriel Chocolate at the corner of Quininup Road. 3. Cross Caves Road to Abbeys Farm Road and follow this to the T-junction at Wildwood Road. Turn left to find Wulura Farms. 4. Next, head to Yallingup Wood-Fired Bread by continuing west on Wildwood Road, then turn right at Commonage Road and left at Biddle Road. The bakery is at the corner of Biddle Road and Sheoak Drive. 5. Return down Biddle Road to Commonage Road and turn left, following the road around until you find Simmo’s Ice Creamery. 6. From here, continue down Commonage Road, and turn left to return to Dunsborough or right to head into Busselton. Food Trail #2 - in and around Cowaramup Beautiful breakfast and pantry provisions 1. Start your tour in Cowaramup’s Black Sheep Deli with a delicious and different breakfast (the Indonesian-inspired vegetarian Nasi Goreng is a favourite). Between the petrol station and butcher, this new café opens weekdays at 6am and weekends at 7am. While you’re here, pick up a tub of local honey, some organic fruit and vegetables and a loaf of woodfired bread. Or enjoy a slice of raw or gluten-free cake with a freshly-made juice or smoothie while you chat to the locals. 2. Head north towards Busselton to the Margaret River Dairy Company on Bussell Highway near Harman’s Mill Road. 3. Turn off the highway onto Harman’s Mill Road and stop off at Margaret River Nuts & Cereals for unexpected taste treats. Then

continue down Harman’s Mill Road, and turn left at Tom Cullity Drive to find Margaret River Providore. 4. Continue south on Tom Cullity Drive and at the corner of Miamup Road you’ll discover a real sweet treat – Bettenay’s Margaret River Nougat Company. In their tasting room, you can view the production process, learn the history of nougat and taste their award-winning, soft, French-style nougat. And don’t forget to try their nougat liqueur (Nougaretto) and buy some to take home for a delightful dessert treat at the end of your day. 5. You want more? Continue down Miamup Road back to Cowaramup, turn right at the highway and left into Wirring Road. Down a way is Miller’s Ice-Cream Farm Café. 6. Now you’re done! Head back to Cowaramup and to Black Sheep Deli to pick up a ready-made dinner to take home – they have a fabulous range of soups, paninis, curries and stews all packed up and ready to go! Food Trail #3 - in and around Margaret River Fine Chocolates, markets and more 1. Start your tour in Margaret River town. Head south on Bussell Highway and if it’s Saturday morning, call in to the Margaret River Farmer’s Market. Or continue south on the highway and turn right at the Boodjidup Road roundabout to find Margaret River Woodfired Bread a little way down on the left. 2. Go back to the roundabout and turn right onto Bussell Highway. Head south to the Rosa Brook Road intersection. On the corner here, be tempted by Temper Temper Chocolatier. Take a chocolate discovery tour (by appointment) and enjoy free tastings of their fine chocolate. Linger longer and relax in their café with an extraordinary hot chocolate. While you’re here, visit the neighbours: Yahava Koffeeworks, Vasse Virgin and Yoyo’s Icecream Parlor & Diner. 3. Coming out of the gate, turn right onto Rosa Brook Road and continue for several kilometres, then turn right onto Rosa Glen Road. Travel down to Bessell Road to discover The Berry Farm. 4. Go back to Rosa Brook Road and turn right. Continue through Rosa Brook township, then turn left into Jindong Treeton Road. Along here you will find olive oil producer 34° South. 5. Turn left onto Jindong Treeton Road as you leave the property, then turn left onto Osmington Road for a slow, winding country drive back to Bussell Highway. Turn left to Margaret River or right to Busselton. Food Trail #4 - the Organic Garden Trail Inspiring Community gardens 1. This tour is centred in Margaret River town. Start at the Margaret River Community Resource Centre (33 Tunbridge Street) to see organic gardens surrounding the historic buildings. 2. From here, walk behind to enjoy the Margaret River Library’s small bio-dynamic garden that is tended by volunteers and planted according to the seasons. It is open during library hours Monday-Saturday. 3. Back in your car, return to Bussell Highway and turn right, heading south. Just past the high school on the right you will see the Margaret River Organic Garden. Started in 1988, this organic community garden is planted and tended by volunteers. 4. Turn back towards town and turn right into Forrest Road. On the corner is the Margaret River Primary School kitchen garden. It aims to teach students how to grow fresh, seasonal, organic produce and use it to prepare healthy food. View the garden from the footpath or tour by appointment (T: (08) 9757 2666).

Each brewery offers a distinctive tasting experience, from traditional ales and pilsners to chocolate and chilli beer! New brews are being introduced all the time and some have won national and international awards. Most breweries also offer wine and scrumptious food, and promote a casual, family-friendly atmosphere with children’s playgrounds and lawns to entertain the kids. Some also have a regular program of live music so you can kick back on the lawn or verandah with a cold beer and enjoy tunes from the region’s best musicians. Added to the mix are distilleries offering whisky, gin, vodka and liqueurs. Like we said, there’s something for everyone. And if you want to indulge a little more, consider joining a brewery tour or ask one of the local tour operators to design a tour just for you. Then you can relax and leave the driving to someone else! Wherever you go, don't miss Colonial Brewing Co on Osmington Road. Colonial is known for friendly service, great food, sublime views and award winning ale.

CRAFT BREWERIES & DISTILLERIES Nestled among vineyards, quaint farms and bordering the Bramley National Park, you can chill out on the large, shady deck or on the lawn while the kids romp in the playground or kick a footy around. While you’re there, pick up a Colonial Growler to take home. The 2-litre Growler is 100% reusable and keeps your beer fresh and tasty.

hat could be better than enjoying a cold glass of beer or cider on a summer’s day while sitting on a lawn listening to some chilled-out tunes? Get along to the South West Craft Beer Festival in February 2017. It’s a fun day out and there are plenty of food options available on the day. If beer is not your thing, you can sample some great local wines. February is a busy time in the region, so book ahead for accommodation. Buses are available for transport to the venue. There’s also plenty of parking – just don’t forget to appoint a designated driver. www.swbeerfest.com.au

NANNUP – a little town with lots of heart

T

he charming historic mill town of Nannup is located on the banks of the Blackwood River in a picturesque forest setting. It is easily accessible and within an hour’s drive from other towns in the region including Balingup, Bridgetown, Pemberton, Donnybrook, Augusta, Margaret River and Busselton. These days you can drive straight across from Margaret River on the now fully sealed Mowen Road which is suitable for all types of vehicles in all weather. Nannup gets its name from the Noongar people and means “stopping place”. It’s a lovely place to pause in your travels, with lots to see and do in the town centre, including a furniture gallery, an artisan store and various other quirky and interesting shops to browse through. A range of cafés serve great coffee, Devonshire teas, health food, homemade cakes and other culinary delights. Don’t leave town without visiting the Marinko Tomas Memorial where there are picnic and barbecue facilities and a children’s playground.

Or you can make some delightful discoveries just outside the town, including wineries, cheese-making enterprises, tulip and lavender farms and forests. For the more adventurous, go for a ride on the Munda Biddi Cycle Trail, enjoy a beautiful bushwalk on the Bibbulmun Track or Timberline Trail, paddle down the Blackwood River, and if it’s warm, take a dip at Barrabup Pool. Camping is also available at Barrabup and Worker’s Pool. For garden enthusiasts, Nannup’s town centre is ablaze with colour in August when the town hosts its annual Flower and Garden Festival (see story, p7). This is followed by the Blooming Wild Festival (September-November) and the Festival of Country Gardens (November). Other major events on the town’s calendar include the South West FoodBowl Festival (October every second year), Nannup Music Festival (March), the Forest Car Rally (April) and the Blackwood Classic Power Boat Race (September). The township and wider region offer a range of quality accommodation suitable for all seasons and tastes, from caravan and camping accommodation to well-appointed luxury B&Bs and chalets.

NANNUP – a little town with lots of heart GETTING THERE

N

annup is easily accessed from a number of nearby regional towns, most of which are within an easy one-hour drive: • From Busselton, travel south on Vasse Highway • From Margaret River, travel east on Rosa Brook/Mowen Road • From Balingup, travel west on Balingup Road • From Bridgetown, travel west on Brockman Highway • From Pemberton, travel north on Vasse Highway • From Augusta, travel east on Brockman Highway, then north on Vasse Highway. Coming from the north, make sure you stop at Cambray Cheese, open 9am to 5pm daily and situated 12km before Nannup. A warm welcome awaits you at this family-run working dairy where awardwinning sheep cheeses can be sampled and purchased from the farm shop. Based on French recipes, all cheeses are handmade, each with a unique flavour, strength and texture. With more than 30 types of cheeses, the range includes soft and creamy Brie, hard mature Farmhouse and a spreadable Boursan. Milking occurs eight months of the year and you can watch, but call in advance to check times. In the off season, a delicious range of cow’s milk cheese is available. Plan to sit down and relax for morning or afternoon tea with a pot of tea or coffee and homemade fruitcake or scones. Or enjoy a delicious cheese platter with a glass of wine, while enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Homemade preserves, local honey and fresh fruits picked from the orchard are also available for sale. Or perhaps extend your visit and book one of the farm-stay Cambray Cottages, surrounded by jarrah forest, and enjoy everything the heart of the South West has to offer. CAPEL – Country Charm Suggested Day Trip

call ahead to make arrangements. Continue on and you will enter wine country with several well-known wineries within easy driving distance of the Bussell Highway, close to the Capel township. Alternatively, if you are coming from Busselton, take a scenic drive through the Ludlow Tuart Drive. The road meanders through one of the last remaining naturally occurring tuart forests in the world. Membenup Rest Site midway along the drive is suitable for a free overnight stay if you are camping or caravanning. Most are impressed by the magnificent trees, lush greenery and fields of white lilies during winter and spring. If you have the time, consider meandering off the Tuart Drive at the quaint forestry settlement of Ludlow, and head towards Forrest and Peppermint Grove Beaches. You will enjoy the attractive rural landscape and both beaches offer crystal clear waters for swimming, diving, surfing and fishing. There are no boat ramp facilities, however beach access for launching of boats is permitted at Forest, Peppermint Grove, Minninup and Dalyellup beaches. hether it is the panoramic 29km of white sandy beaches, tranquil forests or just the peace and quiet of lush farmlands – the Shire of Capel offers plenty of country charm. A short 20 minute drive from two major south west towns (Bunbury and Busselton) is the rural township of Capel, located at the midway point on the Bussell Highway. Nestled on the Capel River, it features a number of cafes, a top class winery and restaurant, historic country tavern, plus a range of retail services. Heading south from Bunbury, it is worth taking time to drop into the Stratham service station where you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables or usual service station items. A little further down the highway, 10 km north of Capel, is a superb grass green private golf course, complete with friendly resident kangaroos. Visiting golfers are welcome most days, but dress standards do apply and it is necessary to

beach at Peppermint Grove provides BBQ facilities and a children’s playground. It is also possible to travel to Capel via the Bypass Road from Busselton, which is less scenic, but offers a cheese making factory for gourmet produce tasting and purchase. Once you arrive in Capel, take a browse through the shops or enjoy some tasty refreshments. You can then head south east on Goodwood Road to Donnybrook. Traversing rolling farmland and forests, you can explore a winery on the way or relax at Ironstone Gully Falls picnic stop. Circle from Donnybrook to Boyanup on the “Harvest Highway” where there is often fresh vegetable and fruit produce available for sale along the roadside. Boyanup is a thriving and picturesque town. Here you can see farm machinery, train and vintage car displays, potter amongst art and craft outlets or just enjoy a picnic by the Preston River. You can either return directly from Boyanup to Bunbury, or return to Capel on Railway Road, through cultivated farming land and link up with the Bussell Highway to Busselton.

Things to Do WINE MASTERCLASS

GEOGRAPHE WINE SHOW

T

21 – 22 September 2016, Bunbury he Geographe Wine Show has developed over the last 15 years into a prestigious annual opportunity for the 20 plus wine producers in the region to exhibit and have wines benchmarked against industry standards. In 2011, the inclusion of judging classes for wines made from WA grown Alternative Varieties was incorporated and this class is also open to any WA producers outside the Geographe Wine Region. Since 2013, it has been a qualifying wine show for the National Wine Show. This acknowledgment reinforces the professionalism and credibility within the wine industry, with award winning wines having gone on to achieve recognition at National and International levels. All wines are judged to national standards by recognised Australian wine professionals. This year is no exception, with the judging team led by leading wine writer Jane Faulkner. In 2016, visitors to the region have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the judges and the wines with access to the exclusive Masterclasses and the Gala Dinner. Fine wine, food and entertainment promise an unforgettable night and the experience of sharing some of the region’s best.
