Guildhall Jazz Orchestra welcomes back special guest, Guildhall School alumnus Tim Garland. Since graduating, the Grammy Award winning saxophonist has played with Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, led the group Lammas and the Dean Street Underground Orchestra, and formed a 17-year connection with piano legend Chick Corea. He is now known as one of Britain’s foremost composers, fusing jazz with contemporary classical influences. For many Russian 19th-century thinkers and artists, Britain was a symbol of liberal thought and enlightenment. This concert celebrates the UK and Russia’s longstanding fascination with the other’s culture, in parallel with a concert given by Guildhall musicians in St Petersburg, curated by Maria Razumovskaya.

Guildhall pianists and postgraduate singers present songs and opera extracts examining the bonds between nature and human beings, revealing a relationship that is sometimes harmonious and sometimes cruelly destructive. The two concerts, devised and directed by Bretton Brown and Pamela Lidiard, will be connected by this important environmental theme.
