The proposal of this project was to explore the underutilized spaces of downtown São Paulo in order to revitalize and enrich add value to the area by means of a triad of projects: infrastructure, housing and equipment. This proposal has focused and is based on the matter of social assistance distinguished by the types of project and their issues. We worked on social housing, shelter equipment and the qualification of residual area in the triangle of sites bearing in mind the relationship between the region, the assistance and sheltering of the users who lived in the areas nearby. The urban infrastructure has its focus on the qualification of urban residual spaces. In order to turn them into an attractive space, this project explored the forms of leisure through equipment such as a playground and a skateboard ramp, as well as the forms of enjoyment of the landscape, which can be seen from in the large terrace roof above the square. Furthermore, the building of an underground gallery as a “flow directioner” was proposed, it is connected to the social equipment and the Luz subway station.

The social housing (part of the project) aims at housing qualification through the comfort and salubriousness, as well as the diversification of layouts. Daring to go further, the expansion upon the existing building was proposed through a truss. Lastly, the social equipment works on the concept of hybrid building providing lots of forms of human capacitating and rehabilitation. We opted for the unification of programs which involved educational and assistance factors in order to support the shelter for overnight and treatment.

3D The Biological Institute Museum is located in an old house next to Ibirapuera Park and presents the Insect Planet exhibition, which has pedagogic, ludic and interactive purposes. However, it loses lot of its attractive potential because of the precariousness of its visual identity. The proposal of the improving of the space was based on its main feature: interactivity. Therefore, the construction of a new visual identity counted on two typographic families marked for their geometry: Futura and Grotesque. The color palette was inspired by insects. The logo was based on the old house becoming a base in order to receive subtle information which could remind the viewers of the ongoing exhibition. The folder (7 x 12,5 cm) was based on its transformation into a paper insect and the poster (42 x 29,7 cm) on the element that composes the museum’s entrance door. Finally, the environmental design aims at the aesthetical and salutary improvement, proposing three exhibitor types: 1. aquarium, 2. demonstrator and 3. specials. The first one houses the insects, the second one contains the manageable materials and the third one is used for special purposes and activists, such as the “baratódromo” (“Cockroachdrome”). 8•21

First of all, the characteristics of Vila Madalena neighborhood were analyzed. The area presents a strongly bohemian and artistic life, hefty afforestation and a great experimental architecture, despite having very few options for leisure and relaxing green spaces. Therefore, the strategy adopted was the elaboration of a project based on a dialogue between the peculiarities of the neighborhood opening spaces for artistic production, socialization and leisure in public spaces. This parklet holds two singular elements: the elevated deck and the furniture. The elevated deck was proposed to establish communication with the existing square, which is isolated by walls along the sidewalk where the parklet is localized. This elevation made possible the installation of a bike parking lot under the deck. Also, the unevenness establishes a relationship between the floors, furniture and pergola. The furniture was created in order to give comfort both for old people and for children because it was made of ropes which can easily adapt to the body or can serve as a playground for children to climb.

4 In the course of Object Design, the main proposition was to explore the material: carton paper. One of its goals was to explore the paperboard, analyzing its fibers’ direction and testing it by bending it. The final objective was to build an element which could shelter a person for a short or long time, and that could provide comfort or just mesmerize the covered one for some moments. The final product developed by this group was a habitacle based on the strength of the paperboard’s fibers and on the bending. The small opening of its legs blocks the light on its base and the widening of its upper part with some small holes in proper parts provide the entrance of light in a singular way.

In the same course, the last exercise aimed to develop an object which could establish a relationship with a fruit. The chosen fruit was the dry coconut. When the dry coconut was sectioned, the existence of two profiles was noticed: one was oval and the other one was circular. The combination of these sections with the dry coconut’s layers created a structure of sequenced profiles which could instigate the desire of crossing them. The rubber bands which fill the sections remind us of the dry coconut’s fibers and become obstacles. The crossing is made easier by the rotation enabled by the axes and pulleys which compound the structure.

In face of the situation of FAUUSP’s building, in the last exercise of the Architecture and Industry course the development of an outbuilding which could cater to the moment’s needs was proposed. Given the diverse needs the building had, an educational space, where the students could have classes and discussion groups could meet and work on projects, was considered to be more important. The proposed structure is based on a concept of permeability and dynamism, which is revealed on a transitory space, in opposition to FAUUSP’s classrooms that are weatherproof. However, at the same time the proposed structure establishes a relation with FAUUSP’s flexible spaces. The required area was 100 m², thus, 8 modules (2,5 m x 5 m each) were utilized (these measures were stablished in an empirical way and can be seen in the first photo beside). The main idea was to create a flexible space by means of movement. As the modules are on rails, people can separate or put them together depending on what they need. When they are detached, the gap between each module creates a new space, because under the module’s structure lies a slightly smaller platform which 13•21

becomes the floor of this new space. The choice of materials and elements was made by the implementation period, by the translucency needed to solar light and by thermic comfort. This work’s peculiarity can be found in the material: fiber glass, which was produced by the group in a certain moment. The “sandwich” of this material (structured with an aluminum frame and arming) compounds the lateral rotating weatherproofs which have the same mechanism of the “rotating glass curtain”. Three great challenges found were: the collection of rainwater, thermic comfort and electric energy. For the first one, an “L-shaped” gutter was designed to collect the water from the roof’s slope and also the water which could fall between the modules, in case of two or more being together. The thermic comfort was provided by the module’s great ventilation which has a ceiling designed to soften the heat gain and also has some holes which make possible a great ventilation. Finally, the electric energy was achieved by the installation of electrified rails planted with the modular structure’s rails. This system is called by “mini way”.

Bom Retiro’s neighborhood has heavy visual load because of its chromatic and typographic diversity. On the other hand, it has a weak signalization system, which makes it lack accessibility for its commercial and cultural core. Therefore, the proposed solution was the implementation of an orientation system in the neighborhood composed by an Information Center (IC), parklets spread over the neighborhood and a virtual system, which aims to make the orientation and presentation of the region to the visitors easier. This software has the IC as its management center and can be reached in the parklets, where it can be accessed by means of an interactive platform. The IC is located at 103 José Paulino st.. Inspite of having a simple program, it makes it possible to greet the visitor at the ground floor. The first and second floor’s spaces enable the encounter to discuss improvements to the region through a meeting room and a flexible room. For the IC’s visual identity, the design proposed enables the neighborhood itself shown its own identity through its photos, which were treated in accordance to the color palette based on Bom Retiro’s existing welcoming plaque: white, black and yellow. 17•21

The proposition of this work was divided in two phases. The first one consisted of the elaboration of an Architecture Master Plan to UNIFESP Campus in Embu das Artes; the second one intended to develop the main building in this complex, the Cultural Center, which has the common program between the faculties of Performing Arts, Plastic Arts, Cinema, Dance and Music. The adopted concept was the concentration of the campus, which made it possible to return a grand area of this project to the citizens of the areas nearby as a public park. The essential spaces were gathered around the edge of the site, beside Prof. Cândido Mota Filho Ave., where the Cultural Center is, and these spaces are in front of the linear park too. The Cultural Center stands out as a horizontal block released from the site and elevated above a “streetsquare”. The Cultural Center is revealed to the city through a relation established between the space disposition and the treatment of its materiality. The biggest programs, such as the theater, the cinema and the library, have theirs volumes highlighted by the translucence of the Cultural Center’s exterior. are the faculties’ buildings, a great lamina-support building which is situated alongside the “street-square” and goes on and lands upward the hill. The transition around the buildings is designed by the “street-square”, a large sloping plan that functions as an extension of the Prof. Cândido Mota Filho Av.’ Sidewalk. Moreover, this space was designed to become a place where, not only the students, but also citizens could do, live and enjoy all types of activities and spontaneous practices – this is a generous transition between the building and the city.
