Asphalt emulsion is the dispersion of small particles of asphalt in water to yield an O/W (oil in water) emulsion, although it is also possible to obtain W/O (water in oil) emulsions, where it is water that is dispersed as small particles in asphalt used for special applications. Asphalt emulsions usually have a content of 40 to 70% of asphalt, are brown, and the viscosity increases as the asphalt content increases. The average size of the asphalt particle dispersed in water, ranges between 4 and 15 microns, depending on the type of emulsion and the dispersion technology of the colloidal mill. An emulsion with a uniform particle size is very stable, and when is mixed with an aggregate, the emulsion covers it leaving an homogenous asphalt layer which increases cohesion of the mixture.

The following graph illustrates a distribution of the particle size for a rapid setting emulsion where the average size is 9.2 microns.
The asphalt emulsions are produced utilizing a colloidal mill; however, other dispersion equipment can be used. Hot asphalt and soap solution are forced to pass between a gyrating disc and a fixed stator, this generate a heat interchange between them, that yields an emulsion temperature that is function of the temperature difference and mass quantity between the two; according to the following formula:

batch process
Asphalt emulsions may be produced by batches (noncontinuous) or through a continuous line process. The batch process is comprised of two procedures, the aqueous phase (soap solution) and the production of the emulsion. As the following figure shows, the soap solution is prepared in a tank where emulsifiers, other additives and water are added. This solution is later sent to the colloidal mill along with the asphalt for emulsion production.

SLURRY SEAL AND MICRO SURFACE Asfier N480L and Asfier 510
Emulsions prepared with ASFIER N480L perform extremely well for these two types of applications. They create a cohesion which allows for traffic as soon as an hour after the application, or less, if weather conditions are favorable.
HOW IS A SLURRY SEAL AND MICROSURFACE MADE? 8
All components are loaded and mixed in one machine. This machine mixes them in the correct proportions and lays them as well.

EMULSION FOR PRIMER SPRAY APPLICATION
One of the most common processes used in road construction is the spraying of primer. This consists of a hydrocarbon binder over a granular layer previous to laying the rolling mat or an asphalt treatment. The main objective of this treatment is to protect the conditions and characteristics that have been achieved on the base, aside from providing continuity between the granular base and asphalt material, and providing the granular base with a certain degree of impermeability and protection. 10
The following may be used for priming: Liquefied medium set asphalt type FM-1 (More solvent asphalt, kerosene or diesel-like) Asphalt emulsions with a generally slow or superstable set. A special emulsion developed at the laboratories, utilizing a high penetration hydrocarbon.
Recommendations 路It is recommended that the emulsion viscosity be between the 10 and 50 SSF range. 路Retention on mesh no.20 must have a maximum of 0.1%. 路The water percentage must be between the 45 to 55% range. A high penetration asphalt is used for these types of emulsions.
PAVEMENT RECYCLING EMULSION (RAP)
Asphalt pavement recycling has become one of the most popular pavement rehabilitation alternatives around the globe. There are a vast variety of recycling methods targeted at handling the different specific problems pertaining to pavement and its structural needs. Due to environmental protection, one of the most important technologies to be developed is cold mix asphalt recycling, whether onsite or in the plant. In order to accomplish this, special asphalt emulsions have been developed to regenerate–as much as possible– the original properties of the worn-out asphalt. Therefore, before recommending any of these techniques, a specific design is required for each recycle.
