The mission seeks to answer questions like how the sun is able to create and control its heliosphere, the surrounding bubble of magnetic fields. Solar Orbiter will orbit the sun, nearing as close as 26 million miles away from the star. After launch, it will take 3 years to reach this elliptical orbit around the sun.
