Celebrate spring, at the 63rd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival: Visit Fairhope March 20, 21 and 22 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the 63rd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival. Please join as we transform downtown Fairhope into an outdoor gallery of art, food, entertainment, kids art area and exhibits guaranteed to be fun for the entire family.The festival is scheduled for March 20, 21 and 22 and is presented by PNC Bank. Festival hours are Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The festival is free to the public.

More than 200 exhibitors will bring their best works from all over the country, including many from the Southeast, to showcase at this prestigious juried show. Enjoy live entertainment and delicious cuisine from the food court throughout this great three-day event. An Eastern Shore staple for more than 60 years, there’s something for everyone at the Arts & Crafts Festival in beautiful Downtown Fairhope. Be one of the more than 250,000 visitors to take advantage of this great event.

BRATS (Baldwin County Area Transportation System) will offer a shuttle service from the Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place Center, Eastern Shore Village Center and the east side of Volanta Sports Complex. All of the parking is free and the locations are less than a fiveminute ride away. The shuttle ride costs only $2 one way.

Free valet parking for bicycles will be provided behind the Fairhope Museum of History. Handicapped parking will be located in the Municipal Parking Lot on Bancroft.

History of the Arts & Crafts Festival The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is now in its 63rd year of coordinating the Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope, presented by PNC Bank. It was originally started as a tour, planned to coordinate with the Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations, with the idea that visitors attending these major events in Mobile would be attracted across the bay, thus allowing visitors and local residents a chance to see some of the many talents of Eastern Shore residents.

According to Chamber records and newspaper articles, the first Arts & Crafts tour took place February 22 to February 28, 1952. All exhibits were inside store windows and consisted of a wide variety of interests.

The tour schedule included entertainment and craft demonstrations and lasted for an entire week. Although some artists did sell items, the majority of the “tour” consisted of exhibits for viewing only.

In 1965 the tour expanded to include exhibitors and activities from the cities of Spanish Fort and Daphne. The week’s opening ceremonies were held in Spanish Fort and ended with a play in Fairhope.

The Chamber reported 4,150 visitors; 52 exhibitors and demonstrators were highlighted, in addition to another 41 artists who participated.

In 1967 there were more than a hundred displays, exhibits and demonstrations. There was still no entry fee, but all participants were asked to pay a 10 percent commission on their gross sales.

By 1975 craftsmen displayed works and methods in “Craft-Houses” (which were created out of vacant buildings).

For the first time in 1978, the show was condensed to three days. This was also the first year craftsmen were placed on the sidewalks, rather than in buildings and businesses.

In 1983, the first prize money was awarded. The Best of Show recipient was given $250 and booths were moved from the edge of the streets to the middle.

The Mary McGrath Award was established in 1984.

We approach this year’s show with much of the same excitement and enthusiasm that previous festivals and tours shared.

In 1997, the 45th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival was first named one of the top 200 Festivals in the United States by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The Festival has received this same honor in the following years.

Artists who participate in shows all over the United

States vote upon this award. In 2007 the show was ranked No. 10. In 2011 the show was ranked No. 26.

The 2013 Festival was ranked #2 in the state of Alabama and #23 in the Nation.

As one may see from this history, the Festival has changed in many ways; its exhibitors are no longer only locals; they come from across the United States.

We no longer charge the exhibitors commission on their sales, just an entry fee. The number of visitors is now in six-digit figures, and the activities taking place in conjunction with the Festival have grown by leaps and bounds.

The Arts & Crafts Festival’s purpose remains the same to promote good will and festivity to Fairhope and the Eastern Shore, to provide working capital for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce and to exhibit for show and sale the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available and to host the Festival in the loveliest area in the world.

Volunteer committee readies for best show ever The 63rd Annual Arts and Crafts Festival planning committee is working hard to prepare for the best show ever. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event, scheduled for March 20, 21 and 22, is held in Fairhope the third weekend of March each year.

More than 100 volunteers, representing service clubs, chamber businesses and individuals participate in the event.

will bring their juried arts and crafts to this prestigious show. Live entertainment will be going on throughout the three-day event and unique cuisine will be served in the food court. It all takes place on the streets of beautiful downtown Fairhope. Last year the event attracted more than 300,000 visitors to the area. The festival was chosen as one of the top events in the state for March by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel. The show is also ranked in the top 20 by the Southeast Tourism Society.

“The Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope draws people from all around the U.S. and world. Its flair for Southern hospitality is on full display by the city, local businesses, volunteers, and our festival committee,” said Heiko Einfeld, executive director of the Chamber. “The economic impact of the festival reaches all of Baldwin County and even parts of Mobile County.”

One way companies and individuals can get their name out there and help the artist and craftsmen is to participate in the Patron of the Arts Award program during the festival. All one has to do is agree ahead of time to purchase a minimum of $100 from one of the artists.

Once purchased, a placard will be placed at the vendor’s booth and the artist will be able to display a ribbon in their honor.

Meet Jean McKee Artist depicts her view from her arts and crafts booth The planning committee for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Art & Crafts Festival in Fairhope has made the selection of the official artwork for the 2015 show. The artist selected is Jean McKee, a resident of Spanish Fort. The show is scheduled for March 20, 21 and 22.

Artist Jean McKee began her art career in 1982 by entering several pieces of her work in art shows around the Southeast, from shows in Miami to New Orleans.

Jean has participated in shows spanning to coastline for over 30 years.

The first show she started with was the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival. Jean’s work was chosen for this year’s posters and T-shirts. “This is the view that I have from my booth in front of the Chamber of Commerce” said Jean. Jean uses acrylics in a bright bold style. Her distinctive artwork typifies the local scenes where she finds inspiration, like the serene image of a row of sailboats docked for the night or a nostalgic image of community gathering places, such as Flora-Bama.

In addition to original pieces, Jean does commission work. Her work can be found in many galleries along the Gulf Coast. She has participated in more than 300

Awards, judges Cash prizes awarded to artists and craftsmen A panel of three very talented and highly respected judges were chosen to pick the best of the best in the 63rd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope.

More than 230 of the most talented artist and craftsmen of the U.S. will exhibit their works. The awards will be presented during the Exhibitor’s Dinner on Friday evening.

This year’s judges are Dr. Chrisa Craig, Patty Pusateri and Pat Odom.

Meet the judges Dr. Chrisa Craig

Dr. Chrisa Craig, professor emeritus of The College of New Jersey, served as coordinator of art education, taught methods courses, studios and Non-Western art history. She holds BA and MA degrees from the University of Michigan and an Craig Ed.D. in art from New York University.

With an emphasis on professional development, Professor Craig has been called upon to serve as an art education consultant for Binney and Smith; Crayola Dream Maker Series, Xerox Corporation, American Schools Abroad (Mogadishu, Somalia), TCNJ Graduate Studies Abroad (Majorca, Spain), Young Audiences of New Jersey and several public school systems in New Jersey. Dr. Craig has been awarded many fellowships and grants for studio work as well as academic endeavors. Among them are three New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowships and a Ruth Halvorsen Award from the National Art Education Association.

Professor Craig has presented workshops and papers for International Art Education Association (British Columbia, Canada; Cairo, Egypt; Mumbai, India), state associations (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Michigan) and has participated in two exclusive weeklong seminars conducted by The Getty Center for Arts Education.

The art of Chrisa Craig has taken many forms over her lengthy career as a visual artist. Each form and medium explored reflecting Craig’s desire to establish a dynamic relationship between personal expression and the vehicle through

which that expression is most effectively communicated. Works of a variety of media have been exhibited internationally, nationally, throughout the state of New Jersey and recently in the state of Michigan where Chrisa now resides with her husband and sculptor, Chuck Kumnick.

Craig earned a master’s degree in painting from the University of Michigan and did post graduate study at The Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts in New York. Chrisa’s multi-media works were awarded with three New Jersey Council on the Arts grants and have had international, national and statewide exposure.

Since retiring from teaching, Chrisa has devoted her self to painting and drawing. She has gallery representation in Michigan.

Patty Pusateri

Patty Pusateri has been immersed in creative endeavors for the last 30 years.

In 1990, she launched Patricia P, a design company and manufacturing company for her exclusive multilayer “shredded” fiber art line of clothing. This line of creative clothing included Pusateri jackets, dusters, vests and skirts made of multiple layers of tencel and cotton. Patty participated in various juried art shows across the Southwest region throughout her career and won three Best of Show Awards at Artfest-Dallas, Houston Bayou City Art Show and Crested Butte Colorado Art Festival.

After 13 years in fiber art and five major hand surgeries, Patty had to change directions with creative outlets, by jumping into mixed media and digital photography. This creative outlet allowed her to utilize a rare collection of photography her father took while traveling in foreign countries in the 1950’s. Although this would satisfy her creative outlet she was still a 3D artist at heart. In 2013, she fell in love with Encaustic and is now finding great satisfaction in building intricate layers, using photos, found objects, inspirational words in those colorful layers of wax. Patty permeates an artistic vibe and lights up when she can enjoy the creative spirit of an art show.

for over 40 years and has a wonderful network of family and friends across the country. Patty is recently widowed and has three children — a daughter Angi that lives in Dallas, and her twins — Michelle, whom lives in San Francisco; her son, Michael, his wife Jamie and of course her “one and only” grandson, Asher who also live in the DFW area. She loves reading, exercising, gardening, volunteering. And of course the solitary time in her studio letting her imagination soar!

Pat Odom

Pat Odom holds a bachelor and master’s degrees in drawing and painting, commercial art and art education) from The University of Southern Mississippi.

She has also taken painting courses from The University of Hawaii; design and painting courses from Louisiana Odom Tech University; drawing and painting at Ringling School of Art, design: Arrowmont School of Art and Crafts and many classes given by national and international artists.

From her teachings Pat holds several teaching awards including Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who Among American Teachers, Outstanding Educators of Community Colleges, National Teacher’s Award of Excellence, Instructor of the Year (M.G.C.C.C).

10k begins at 8 a.m. and 2-mile fun run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m.

Sponsored by Thomas Hospital and Wells Fargo Bank and follows a scenic course along the bay and through neighborhoods of Fairhope. Part of the many festivities that fill the town during the annual Arts & Crafts Festival, the run signals a rite of spring.

Program

There are many ways Arts & Crafts Festival participants are honored, including the Awards Dinner, where more than $14,500 in prize money is given to the best of the best. However, the best honor they receive is when visitors to the festival purchase their works.

The Patron Award Program allows businesses or individuals to further honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchasing at least $100 worth of arts or crafts from one vendor.

When those patrons visit the festival, they will drop by the Chamber office in Fairhope and pick up a ribbon to be placed on their chosen vendor’s booth and a placard bearing their own name or the name of a business, which is also be placed at the vendor’s booth. Patrons may purchase works from any vendor they choose. All the money goes directly to the artist. When more patrons commit, more money is guaranteed to be spent at the festival.

“Each year we have about 50 patrons who commit to purchase $100 worth of work,” said Liz Roberts, director of Tourism and Special Events for the ESCoC. “It is such a wonderful way to honor our participant’s talents. The only cost involved is the purchase of the works, which becomes the property of the patron.”

Free valet parking for bicycles will be provided behind the Fairhope Museum of History.

Volunteers will check in and oversee the bicycle parking area for the festival weekend. Both groups hope the valet station will offer visitors a safe and convenient place to keep their bikes while they enjoy the festival.

Food court Shuttle Service BRATS SHUTTLE SERVICE

Free parking provided at convenient locations BRATS (Baldwin County Area Transportation System) will offer a shuttle service from the Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place Center, Eastern Shore Village Center and the east side of Volanta Sports Complex. All of the parking is free and the locations are less than a five-minute ride away. The shuttle ride costs only $2 one way.

Free valet parking for bicycles will be provided behind the Fairhope Museum of History. Handicapped parking will be located in the Municipal Parking Lot on Bancroft.

What’s new

We are proud to announce that we have added a Kids Art Corner to the 63rd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival, sponsored by Coldwell Banker Reehl Properties. Our focus is to bring children’s art to the Arts & Crafts Festival and to promote art in our schools. We encourage budding artists to stop by and express their creativity. This would be a great place for the adults to relax and watch their kids have fun with art. Several adults and art students from local schools will be assisting the kids with various art projects.

We will feature a children’s canvas dotting art project.

Kids are invited to participate in this mosaic style art project, which will be displayed in downtown Fairhope after the festival.

Another special treat for the kids, Bricks 4 Kidz, will be here with several hands-on Lego projects, something they don’t want to miss. Additional activities will include wild and wacky hair art, bookmarks, grab bags and lots more.

The kids’ corner will be located next to Greer’s. The hours are Saturday 11 – 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 – 4 p.m.
