Living the high life on the high seas BY ALLISON MARLOW
8 Beachin’ ● April 2018
Forget being a pirate. You want to captain a yacht, trust us. Life at sea should have less walking the plank and more walk-through closets, top of the line entertainment systems and your galley? It should rival the best four star restaurant any land lubber can name. At The Wharf in Orange Beach, the gentlemen of Galati Yacht Sales make this dream a reality. Here you can find yachts of all shapes and sizes, used and new. The ones you long to peak inside don’t have price stickers on the window. And unless you can include a cool six zeros on the end of your check, you shouldn’t ask. But, oh, if you get the chance to step inside, you should. It is glorious. Teak decks lead to the interior where a spacious galley opens to an entertaining space that offers nearly 360 degree views of the ocean around you. April 2018 ● Beachin’ 9
Three staterooms mean there’s room for six, and separate sleeping quarters in the rear for the captain, should you require one. At more than 70 feet long is it difficult to sail? The sales staff shrugs, you learn. With a little practice, these yachts are really not that hard to operate. New technology means that rough seas are a breeze too. A gyro-stabilizing ball helps to prevent 90 percent of the motion of the rolling seas. John McDonald, Galati salesman, said he has seen high seas smack the side of the ship with nary a tea towel bumped out of place on board. Natural light flows into each stateroom and secret doors open to reveal laundry rooms and storage facilities. Every space is a master of efficiency and practicality. The ship, designed by Prestige Yachts, is considered the pinnacle of yacht design. McDonald said other brands’ designs often follow those of Prestige. For example, the aft galley, the first indoor space guests enter, used to be hidden below deck. Now, it is an integral part of the entertainment space. Another example is the swimming platform which when lowered turns into stairs to help swimmers return to the ship with little effort. Think your only chance of sailing away in this dream is to win a lottery ticket? It’s possible. McDonald said it has happened at Galati, once. So, keep on dreaming. 10 Beachin’ ● April 2018

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 14 Beachin’ ● April 2018
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

Forged from musical inspiration, made to be touched Foley artist creates wooden masterpieces
Touch it. Run your fingers along the smooth, curved lines of this shorebird, up and over his round head and along his tiny beak. The carved birds created by Peter von Glahn are meant to be stroked and befriended. Give the bird a name. Eventually, you will talk to it. You won’t feel weird that you are speaking to a wooden bird. Instead, you will find yourself awash with guilt that you didn’t give the little guy a name. The irresistible “Friend” birds, crafted from pine, black walnut, tulip and cedar, among other woods, are the tiniest of von Glahn’s creations. As the retired advertising salesman perfected his craft carving their small beaks and backs, he gave them to friends, who in turn found them to be 16 Beachin’ ● April 2018
the perfect sidekick. Now, they are among the most popular items sold at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach. For von Glahn, the tiny birds were the first step in an art career put on hold for decades. Art called to von Glahn first at Boston University where he began his studies. He continued at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota and began working in steel. But, that’s an expensive medium and the venture failed financially. He left the art world behind and moved on to advertising sales with Capital Cities Communications Inc., a communications powerhouse that owned television and radio stations as well as newspapers. The company purchased ABC in the mid-80s. von Glahn left before Disney bought
the conglomerate. He was able to retire before age 50. He still didn’t return to art though. Instead, he and his wife traveled the nation for seven years in an RV. When the markets crashed, cracking his retirement nest egg, von Glahn returned to work as an independent contractor developing training programs for nuclear facilities. He retired again after 10 years. This time, he was ready to pursue his art. The couple searched for a condo in Florida and realized the condo life wasn’t for them. They had spent time in Summerdale during their cross country travels and decided to return, eventually buying a home in Foley. After more than a decade traveling the nation’s most beautiful lands, the couple says south Alabama is a
wonderful place to land. “We’ve traveled all over the country and we think about the beautiful places we’ve been,” von Glahn said. “Overall we’re very happy here. It’s the best of all worlds.” As von Glahn returned to his artwork, he created mural pieces for their new home and carved the birds to give to friends. Tiny birds turned into larger, graceful black swans, and that turned into pieces that stand as tall as von Glahn himself. “Everything developed from doing something in my shop and saying, ‘this could go farther’,” von Glahn said. In his home workspace, named Lunchmeat Studios, von Glahn is inspired by his favorite musicians such as Rammstein, Mozart and
Where to find Peter von Glahn’s works: Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach Foley Art Center Kit & Kaboodle, Foley Leonard Cohen. Some of his pieces are inspired directly by a lyric. From Cohen it is the song “Anthem” and its prose, “There is a crack in everything, That’s how the light gets in”. From The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” the line “Some dance to remember, some dance to forget,” has inspired another piece. “I listen to the music and start seeing something form,” von Glahn said. At the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach you can check out “Garden of Eden” a piece inspired by Iron Butterfly’s “In A Gadda Da Vida.” Each piece is smooth to the touch
and beckons the viewer to come closer. “I’m fascinated with lines and curves,” said von Glahn. He draws inspiration too from John James Audubon who painted and cataloged American birds, often in unnatural poses. Fans who want to befriend von Glahn’s birds and the artist might catch a glimpse of him in Orange Beach. His home workplace, Lunchmeat Studio is not open to the public. And if you do spot him, put your bird on hold and talk to the artist instead- after decades of traveling his stories are as fantastic and inviting as his artwork. April 2018 ● Beachin’ 17

Famous Fried Green Tomatoes Makes 4 servings 2 cups LuLu’s Crazy Frying Flour 2 cups buttermilk 1 tablespoon LuLu’s Perfect pepper Hot Sauce 4 green tomatoes 6 cups peanut or vegetable oil, or enough to fill a skillet about 2 inches deep Lulu’s WOW sauce 1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. 2. Place frying flour in a bowl. 3. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk and pepper sauce. 4. Slice green tomatoes ¼ inch thick and set aside. 5. In a cast iron heavy skillet, heat oil to 355 degrees over medium-high head. (Use a candy or fry thermometer for accuracy or heat until a little flour flicked into the oil sizzles.) 6. Dip tomatoes in buttermilk, then dredge tomatoes in frying flour. Dip back into milk mixture and dredge again in frying flour, coating tomatoes thoroughly. 7. Fry tomatoes in small batches (about 4 slices at a time) until golden brown, approximately 2 minutes on each side, turning once during cooking. 8. Drain on a paper bag on a cookie sheet. Place fried tomatoes in oven while others are cooking. When all batches are completed, serve immediately with WOW Sauce.

LuLu’s WOW Sauce Honest to God, people actually say “WOW!” when they take a bit of our famous Grouper Loaf with Fried Green Tomatoes topped with this wonderful sauce. It happens so often in fact, “WOW” finally became part of the dish’s name, and “WOW” Sauce” is much easier to say than “distinctive Creole mustard and horseradish sauce.” Similar in flavor to a remoulade sauce, the Creole mustard gives it a regional tang, and the horseradish accentuates beef dishes beautifully. Makes 1 ½ Cups 2 whole fresh jalapeno peppers 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup mayonnaise 32 Beachin’ ● April 2018
¼ cup Creole mustard ¼ cup horseradish 1. Coat peppers with olive oil. Char in a hot skillet or under a broiler. The trick is to blacken the skins evenly by turning them frequently. 2. Once peppers are charred, place them in plastic bag or covered bowl for about 15 minutes. As the peppers cool, the heat and moisture sweat the skins from the peppers. Once skins are removed, cut peppers in half, carefully remove seeds, and finely chop. 3. Combine chopped peppers, mayonnaise, mustard, and horseradish in a bowl. Mix thoroughly and refrigerate.
Lulu’s Crazy Frying Flour
LuLu’s Crazy Creola Seasoning
Our Crazy Flour uses our own Creola Seasoning, and we spike the mix with extra black pepper to give it that special LuLu’s love. In the restaurant we use flour to bread our shrimp, crab claws, okra and green tomatoes. The key to successful deep frying is to get the oil hot enough and keep it hot; if you don’t, that’s when your food gets greasy. The “culinarily” correct temperature for frying is 350 degrees, but I prefer a little hotter and have seen some Southern fry masters turn it up to 375 degrees, especially when using a cast iron Dutch oven over a propane cooker in the driveway.
