Sands of Time The history of ONO Island There are many small islands in the area which add to the “feel” of Orange Beach as a tropical resort. The largest of these is ONO Island. It is located on Old River just north of Gulf Beach. It is the largest Island in Orange Beach, approximately 7.5 miles long. It is a very upscale place, but it was not always that Long way. Before the 1950s, George Kee and his brother Harville raised about 5,000 goats on the island. The brothers were bridge tenders in the area. They lived in a small shack and sold goats for milk and meat. According to Clifford Callaway, when his Father needed milk or meat, he would tell Clifford and his brother Nolan to paddle over to the island and buy some from the Kee brothers. They charged 50 cents each if you caught your own goat or one dollar if they caught it for you. Surprisingly the locals never called the island Goat Island. The History of ONO Island ownership goes back to the late 1930’s. Following the Great Depression, the west end of ONO Island and part of the western end of Perdido Key was bought for taxes owed by Dr. Amos Garrett and a Mr. McFall. The eastern end (a half mile) of ONO was owned by the Golightly Family. Dr. Garrett was my cousin and was a dentist in Robertsdale, and also Mayor of Robertsdale. He was known as a compassionate man with a love of his community, county, State and fellow man. The land they bought also included large tracts of land on Alabama Point, around Cotton Bayou, the Catman Road area and of course ONO.

In the early 1950s, Dr. Garrett started trying to work with the States of Florida and Alabama to get a bridge at Alabama Point. He was a smart man, and he knew the only way to develop the Island was to get a bridge over the Pass. Since the State line was at the present Flora-Bama, Alabama officials told the Florida officials they would extend their line to the Pass if they helped build the Bridge. Negotiations did not go well as both States were claiming the Island. Some say that’s how the Island got its name with each saying ‘ OhNO’, the island is ours. Local historian Margaret Childress Long moved to Orange Beach from Evergreen when she was just two months shy of her second birthday. Although she did spend 12 years in Creola she has always called Orange Beach home. Margaret and her husband Buddy live in the same house where Margaret’s parents lived for more than 50 years. Her dad paid $12,500 to Dr. Amos Garret of Robertsdale, her mom’s first cousin, in 1949 for the 300 ft. waterfront parcel. A teacher at Fairhope Middle and High Schools and Elberta Middle School, Margaret served the island as school board representative for six years. A fisherman, hunter and farmer, her father also owned a farm in Summerdale. Sons Wesley and Brooks have turned the farm into the popular Alligator Alley tourist attraction. Margaret has co-authored two books, “The Best Place to Be – The Story of Orange Beach, Alabama” and “Orange Beach Alabama – A Pictorial History”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net April 2020 ● Beachin’ 23

! D E P P A TR Fort Morgan introduces Escape Room BY ALLISON MARLOW There are bars on the windows. Around you sit a field desk, a cannon and boxes of ammunition. If you look carefully among these items, you will find clues that can lead you to freedom and help your troops understand the defenses of Mobile Bay. Welcome to the Escape Room at Fort Morgan a new attraction at the towering fortress located at the edge of Mobile Bay where troops hunkered during the Battle of Mobile Bay in August, 1864. The fort was used off and on throughout the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. Visitors to the fort can easily envision life as an enlistee huddled in the dark hallways and rooms of the imposing brick structure. The new escape room now allows them to join those ranks. Each clue offers not only a path to freedom but also a brief history lesson. Every item in the room is a reproduction of authentic Civil War era relics except for the cannon and 34 Beachin’ ● April 2020

the cannon balls on the floor, which no modern-day tourist can destroy. “We wanted to try something new to bring in the younger crowd and to help them learn history,” said Wendy Hyatt, of Fort Morgan Historical Site. “The kids love it.” Those with a sharp eye and a thick knowledge of Civil War history might recognize the portrait on the shelf of Mary Elizabeth, a well-known Union spy in New Orleans. And as it turns out, you are a spy too, hence being trapped in a secure room. A museum guide in full period costume remains in the room to help visitors follow the clues. Hyatt said it takes most groups about 40 minutes to gain their freedom. “There’s a lot in here to keep you occupied and to go through,” she said. “Most groups turn the whole place upside-down.” Currently visitors must call ahead to make reservations for the room, which is open Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 2

p.m. The cost is an additional $25. Hyatt said the staff hopes to open the room on the weekends during the summer months as well. They are most excited about the new way that visitors are learning history. “It’s full of lessons, fun and you get to be a spy for the day. What’s better than that?” she said.

Want to go? WHAT: Fort Morgan Escape Room WHEN: Wednesdays, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. AGES: Recommended for ages 12 and older. Minimum 4 participants, maximum 8. Depending on availability other participants may be added to your group. COST: $25 per person TO BOOK: Send an email to escaperoom@fort-morgan.org MORE INFORMATION: http://www.fort-morgan.org/ escape-room/

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett Homeport Crab Melt I developed this recipe when I worked as a catering chef aboard the motor yacht Mariner III in New York. I originally used the rich, addictive cheesy crab filling in puff pastry hors d’oeuvres. It is such a versatile recipe that can be used as filling, spread or a dip – I love it golden, hot, and bubbling in Buffett a small baking dish, served with crackers. Here it works beautifully on an open-faced sandwich. My mother loved this sandwich; I put it on the original LuLu’s menu for her, and I’m glad I did because it is now one of the best-selling sandwiches at my restaurants.

Homeport Crab Melt Makes four sandwiches Ingredients 1 pound cooked fresh blue crab claw meat, picked through for shells, handled carefully to keep the meat in big chunks

2 cups shredded Swiss cheese ½ cup finely chopped green onions ½ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 ½ cups mayonnaise 4 (8-inch) loaves New Orleans-style French bread Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a medium bowl, combine the crabmeat, cheese, green onion, salt and pepper. 3. Add the mayonnaise and mix well. 4. Cut each French loaf in half horizontally. 5. Spread the crabmeat mixture generously over each piece of bread. 6. Place all eight pieces on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, or until the crabmeat mixture is hot and the cheese starts to bubble. 7. Turn the oven to broil and broil for a few minutes, until the cheese is golden brown.

LuLu Note I serve this “open-faced” on the French bread, but I have also made it as an hors d’oeuvre for parties on toast points or as an individual appetizer wrapped in phyllo dough. There are many ways to serve this rich, addictive fish.
