Sands of Time Artificial Reefs in the Gulf of Mexico I hope you do not get tired of me talking about Orange Beach fishing, but it was my favorite pastime growing up, and still is a favorite. The Callaway and Walker families have collaborated in many ways over the years to the benefit of the community. Their work Long together in their participation of the charter fishing industry has given purpose to the community. The beginnings of the work of the Orange Beach Fishing Association led to their work in the artificial reef programs are but a few of their joint accomplishments. First let me tell you that the floor of the Gulf in the bottom fishing areas is sandy and constantly shifting with the currents. Bottom feeding fish such as our prize Snapper eat small crustaceans and fish which gather where grasses and seaweed grow. These areas, such as coral reefs and shipwrecks, grow plants and other organisms that attract the small crustaceans and fish, just the type places that charter fishermen love to fish. Normal underwater currents and storms cause these underwater features to be moved or covered by the shifting sand. All the fishermen knew about fishing large wrecks and knew where most of them were. However, as the charter fleet grew, there just were not enough wrecks to accommodate all the charter boats. Ronald Walker and others began thinking about making artificial reefs. One of the first successful artificial reefs was the old barge that had been used as the first canal bridge on Highway 59 at Gulf Shores. The barge was considered derelict and was towed to the head of Cotton Bayou. According to my neighbor, Thurston Lauder, his Dad, Neil Lauder and Uncle Ray Callaway towed the barge out into

the Gulf. Rough weather hit and they were forced to sink it about three miles out from the Pass. I have caught snapper off it and it is still there. The group experimented with everything from old car bodies, concrete pipes, tires, and steel rods and concrete all tied together. These small reefs worked well, but were shortly covered with sand by the currents. The group’s efforts continued by sinking twenty or more car bodies in a single place. They were larger and stayed longer and attracted more fish. All parts of the cars that contained fluids were removed to protect the environment. Next month, I will tell you more about the Artificial Reef Program, and how important it is to our fishing industry. Local historian Margaret Childress Long moved to Orange Beach from Evergreen when she was just two months shy of her second birthday. Although she did spend 12 years in Creola she has always called Orange Beach home. Margaret and her husband Buddy live in the same house where Margaret’s parents lived for more than 50 years. Her dad paid $12,500 to Dr. Amos Garret of Robertsdale, her mom’s first cousin, in 1949 for the 300 ft. waterfront parcel. A teacher at Fairhope Middle and High Schools and Elberta Middle School, Margaret served the island as school board representative for six years. A fisherman, hunter and farmer, her father also owned a farm in Summerdale. Sons Wesley and Brooks have turned the farm into the popular Alligator Alley tourist attraction. Margaret has co-authored two books, “The Best Place to Be – The Story of Orange Beach, Alabama” and “Orange Beach Alabama – A Pictorial History”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County
It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where
professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

Local jeweler uses gifts of nature to handcraft pieces BY MELANIE LECROY
Katy Elliot’s passion for jewelry making started early in life. The enterprising fourth grader began making flower bracelets and selling them on the school bus. Over the years her medium changed and evolved. Beach combing with her father started her on a path of crafting oyster shell and Native American pottery piece jewelry and driftwood crosses. Those materials also inspired the name of her company, Oysterdrift. Elliot’s background in fashion and interior design come through in her unique jewelry. Her jewelry leans more boho chic now with an emphasis on comfortable everyday wearable pieces. The colorful pieces are lightweight and range from ocean inspired mermaid and turtle pendants to silver and gold accented agate. Oysterdrift has several lines including aromatherapy jewelry that 28 Beachin’ ● April 2021
uses clay pendants that are unglazed on the back as well as lava rock beads. These materials hold essential oil for hours. Elliot has a line of jewelry made for and available exclusively at the Gulf Shores City Store. Oysterdrift jewelry and oyster shell ornaments can be purchased at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach and online at oysterdrift.com.

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett My dear friend, Suzanne Cleveland, for years arrived at every pier-party, holiday get-together, or general shin-dig with her trademark lemon squares. The children would wait impatiently for her to arrive with a tray of tasty treats, powdered sugar all over their faces and fingers within minutes. This Buffett dessert is inspired by her recipe, with a tart little key lime twist.
Key Lime Squares Makes 10-12 Squares Ingredients For Crust: ¼ cup blanched almond slivers 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 cups all purpose flour 1 tablespoon powdered or confectioner’s sugar ¼ teaspoon almond extract For Filling: 5 eggs 2 cups white sugar ¾ cup key lime juice ¼ cup powdered or confectioner’s sugar Pinch of salt ½ teaspoon orange zest Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350˚ 2. Using a mini-food processor, chop almonds into a

coarse meal. 3. In a large mixing bowl or food processor, combine almonds, butter, flour, 1 tablespoon confectioner’s sugar and almond extract. 4. Blend into a thick pastry and pat into the bottom of a well greased 8x12“ baking dish. 5. Bake crust for 15 minutes and remove from oven. 6. Reduce oven temperature to 325˚. 7. Gently beat eggs. Add granulated sugar, salt, key lime juice and orange zest. Mix thoroughly. 8. Pour key lime filling over partially baked crust and return to the oven. 9. Bake 20 – 30 minutes or until key lime filling “sets”. 10. Remove from oven and cool. 11. Sift remaining confectioner’s sugar on the top and cut into squares.
