Soaring over lakes, rivers, estuaries, and the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the coast is home to a variety of spectacular waterfowl. The brown pelican is a large water bird weighing up to eight pounds and can have a wing span of over seven feet. Pelicans have long bills with an expandable pouch that is three times the size of their stomach, short legs and webbed feet. The brown pelican and the American white pelican are the only pelican species that are found in Alabama. The Brown pelican was first listed as Endangered on June 2, 1970. It is currently designated as Endangered in its entire range, except Florida and Alabama. It was removed from the endangered list in Florida and Alabama on February 4, 1985. Brown pelicans are the smallest member of the pelican family and are known for their low soaring over the water’s surface and diving after their prey. (Photo by Jack Swindle)

Flipdaddy’s Burgers & Beers boasts nine signature burgers and 20 tap handles. This craft beer bar has been bursting onto the scene around the nation and now it has arrived in Orange Beach.

T

he sun is setting in the distance. The sky is pink and gold. The water glistens as it reflects the sinking rays. Out on the deck the air is hot and still. Fall is approaching but summer’s hold on the Gulf remains in all its sweltering glory. Also gone? Summer beach traffic and long lines outside of restaurants.

Fall is the perfect time to head back to the delicious restaurants that line our powdery white beaches. And, since warm, even hot summer temperatures will dip well into autumn’s territory, there is plenty of time to sample the best, cool drinks our restaurants and bars have to offer. But don’t try to pick just one. The bartenders of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach don’t just mix drinks — they create liquid journeys.

September 2017 ● Beachin’ 9

If you’re heading out to sample a few, we highly suggest you begin your journey at Bill's By the Beach. Here, one of the best drinks also comes with a full spread of appetizers. The Loaded Bloody Mary is made with Absolut Peppar vodka, Don Julio Blanco tequila, fresh tomato juice, and a Bloody Mary mixture recipe handed down through three chefs. Each man tweaked the recipe and now onlyinyourstate.com has named it the best Bloody Mary served anywhere in Alabama. Oh, and did we mention the nearly full meal sitting on top? A slider, bacon, smoked sausage, white cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes, pickled okra, spicy green beans, blackened Gulf shrimp, cocktail onions and celery all tops this delicious concoction. We asked owner Bill Henry, “Why so much?” His answer, “Why not?” The most deliciously correct answer possible. The drink is so top heavy that waiters have learned the hard way that it can’t be carried on a tray. Each Loaded Bloody Mary is hand carried to the table. Nearby, bartenders at each stop along the beach roads are mixing their signature concoctions too. At The Original Oyster House, this year the Moscow Mule rules the request line. Made with house vodka, Ginger Beer, ginger syrup made in-house and garnished with lime and ginger candy, it is the top requested drink at the restaurant this summer. Down at Desoto’s Seafood Kitchen, bartender Wade Morgan is shaking up dozens of his signature drinks, the Desoto 10 Beachin’ ● September 2017

Diver – a bright blue swell of Blue Curacao, coconut rum, Captain Morgan and banana liquor. It’s very beachy. It’s very blue. It is very. “People love it,” Morgan said. “It’s a great vacation drink.” The live music wafts through the air as you make your way to Tacky Jacks where the Bushwacker is king of the night. Silver rum, coconut rum and a floating ring of Bacardi 151 sits on top of coffee liquor and vanilla ice cream. The drink is large and creamy. And cold. So, so cold. You’re going to want to sit a while and take in the scenery with this refreshing concoction. By the time you make your way to Orange Beach, it’s going to be time to eat. Stop in at Blue Water BBQ Company, located at The Wharf for cool drinks and hot barbecue. Here Lloyd Wayne, general manager, compares the Peach Tea, a blend of peach Schnapps and fresh brewed Red Diamond Sweet Tea, to a Sunday afternoon sitting on the rocking chair after mowing the lawn. He’s not wrong. It’s a sweet summer afternoon squeezed right into a glass.

Ruby Slipper Café doesn’t reveal the whole recipe for their signature Bloody Mary’s but they will tell you the mix is made from scratch with house made bacon vodka. You can’t drink all day unless you start here.

The Jubilee Beast Bloody Mary is available exclusively at Fish River Grill by the Bay. All Fish River Grill locations offer specialty margaritas, bushwackers and the tropical and refreshing coconut breeze. September 2017 ● Beachin’ 11

Want to recreate your night out on the town at home? Lucy Buffett’s new book, "Gumbo Love," features several of her signature drink recipes served at LuLu’s, including the popular Bama Breeze. Try it with the recipe below and check out "Gumbo Love" for more of Lucy’s favorite recipes.

Bama Breeze MAKES 1 COCKTAIL 1 lime, cut into wedges 1/2 ounce simple syrup (recipe follows) 3/4 ounce ruby red grapefruit flavored vodka 3/4 ounce coconut rum Cranberry juice

MAKES ABOUT 8 OUNCES 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water

THIS DRINK FEATURES all my favorite ingredients. We came up with it after my brother's song by the same name. My one and only acting gig, in fact, came when I got to play the bar owner singing onstage for the "Bama Breeze" music video. It was a whole lot of fun, but the experience made me thankful for my day job! 1. Put 2 lime wedges in the bottom of a metal cocktail shaker. Add the simple syrup, vodka, and rum. 2. Muddle gently, avoiding the lime rinds, which can add a bitter taste. 3. Fill the shaker with ice and cranberry juice. Pour the mixture back and forth between the shaker and a large mixing glass a few times. 4. Pour the drink into a glass, add a straw, garnish with a lime wedge, and enjoy the Breeze! SIMPLE SYRUP Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. Once cool, pour the syrup into a storage container. It will keep, refrigerated, for a long time. NOTE: You can make larger quantities — simply use equal parts water and sugar.

Exploreum

If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea on your trip to the beach, load up and take a day trip! There are many places for all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and create new memories! 16 Beachin’ ● September 2017

By Destiny Brown Located in downtown Mobile, the Gulf Coast Exploreum and Science Center is a fun and educational experience for the young and the young at heart. The venue hosts an IMAX Theater, permanent galleries with multiple side exhibits all built for hands-on learning and much more. The Exploreum will celebrate its 20th anniversary at its current location in 2018 and 34 years of serving as an educational venue in Mobile. About 150,000 people pass through the doors of the Exploreum each year. From families to senior adults to snowbirds to students on field trips, the museum appeals to all age groups. The IMAX Theater is special to the Exploreum because it is one of only 50 dome theaters in the world. Guests are immersed into the picture and sound with theater seating. The movies change every quarter. There is also a program called Dome Head Science where the museum bring in experts in a given field of science and they present in the

IMAX Theater and follow up with a classic film. From Sept. 23 to Jan. 2, the Exploreum will add three new exhibits to an already impressive line-up. “We are bringing in an exhibit from the Minnesota Children’s Museum that is called "Curious George: Let’s Get Curious" and it’s for ages 2 to 8,” said Jan McKay, executive director of the Exploreum. “They learn about science and technology and it’s all hands-on. Curious George is the theme and we’re going to be doing special story times and we’re doing a banana pancake breakfast and banana split days and celebrity storytelling.” Next door to Curious George, the museum is creating a workshop area called Curiosity Factory. “People are going to be able to take things apart versus build,” McKay said. “Things like computers and phones and bicycles to see how they work. We also do family workshops on the weekends and special workshops for schools to book.” The new IMAX presentation is called Dream Big: Engineering Our World. “It’s about all the gigantic wonderful things

hooked

on fishin with Phil Dortch

Snapper season 2017 is finally over, and as in politics, you can please some of the people some of the time, but never please all the people all the time. Being able to catch snapper on Friday, Saturday and Sunday most of the summer through Labor Day in federal and state waters for recreational fisherman was a good thing. However, offshore charter boats with federal reef permits could fish 49 days, every day, and inshore/nearshore captains like me could not catch snapper on Monday through Thursday. One needs a lawyer to keep all the rules straight. In spite of all the confusion, I did learn a few things about catching red snapper which I can share with readers. First of all, it seems that nothing absolutely works from day to day, therefore you must be flexible. When fishing a neap tide, fishing is somewhat easier because your bait will be straight down. When there is a strong current or wind, things drastically change and many variables come into play. The boat drifts faster making it harder to stay on the spot unless you anchor. Sinker size, bait size, and line size (whether braid or mono) are just some of the factors. How to overcome these obstacles sometimes calls for a little imagination. One thing that seemed to help is to put the boat in reverse to slow forward progress. A heavier weight may be required. I personally use a “knocker rig," which means the sinker is directly next to the hook. Others prefer the sinker farther up the line. To me, it seems that it allows the lighter bait to wrap around the line. Another option is to have a bank sinker on the bottom and one or two hooks on up the line. There is no right or wrong way, whatever works for you. September has historically produced good Cobia fishing a little further offshore as they migrate back toward Florida from Texas. The ships which anchor offshore from Mobile Bay are a good place to start. Most important is to watch the weather, make wise choices, get home safe and if you catch fish, consider it a bonus. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful area of the country. Enjoy and share with friends.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 24 Beachin’ ● September 2017

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net

Anne Webb Potter

“As soon as I touched the clay, I said I have to do this.”

By Allison Marlow If you interviewed Anne Webb without using the sense of sight, it might be hard to determine her craft. She speaks of geometry, chemistry, physics, architecture and even the importance of ergonomics to her work. Perfection is impossible. Practice is required. And even after doing everything just right, chance, even rotten luck, can destroy hours’ worth of dedication and painstaking detailed work. Webb is a potter who hails from Montreal. She says she fell in love with the craft the first time she took lessons in a basement studio. “As soon as I touched the clay, I said I have to do this,” said Potter who used to be a corporate banker. After traveling the U.S. to stay with friends she landed in Alabama. She planned to stay until spring. But love, she said, “is a many splendid thing.” And love kept her in Alabama. That was 17 years ago. Now she and her love, Lowell Webb, also a potter, own and operate Webb Pottery in Magnolia Springs. Here Lowell creates artificial artifacts that do not imitate ancient pieces but rather represent ancient cultures and help viewers to consider the stories of other people, and of themselves. Lowell also creates face jugs, wild creatures with wacky expressions and giant eyes. Anne works mainly on a potter’s wheel in high-fire stoneware and porcelain. She creates jugs, mugs and plates that 26 Beachin’ ● September 2017

you can use in the kitchen. She also painstakingly carves designs into oneof-a-kind creations that take days to complete. The most intricate are the bas relief scenes. You can see the foreground and the background of each lift off the clay. There is texture in the sea creatures and flowers she carves. Texture is her forte. Anne said she adored the feel and look of wood cut artwork. She had to find a way to bring that to pottery. And she did with sgraffito. The technique requires Anne to painstakingly scratch through the surface of each piece and reveal the color below. Anne scratch draws her designs of fish, flowers and repeated shapes freehand as quickly, as if she is merely signing her name. Each drawing is distinct and beautiful. With each piece art is intertwined with science. She talks about removing the water from the piece, on a molecular level, so it can be hard enough to dip in the homemade glazes that Lowell mixes. The piece is dried, and fired again. The process may be repeated a dozen times before it is finished. There is nothing instant or easy about pottery. The glazes require the potters to pause their artistic eye and think scientifically. Different chemicals produce different color glazes. What you see when you paint the piece may not be what you get when it fires. And the clay has to shrink at the same rate as the glaze. The surface where Anne throws and

molds the pottery determines how evenly the whole piece will dry. An electric kick wheel gives each piece a different energy than one a potter moves with their own feet. The clay spins slower or faster, the clay is stretched at a different speed, with a different energy, resulting in a different piece each time. “There is forever a learning curve,” Anne said. “You’ve always got to adjust.” And the functional pottery Anne creates is more than pretty vases and pots. They have to work. Handles have to function and be placed at the right angle to feel comfortable, and to hold a cup of coffee or an entire jug of water. Everything that touches the wet clay leaves a mark, even the wire string that Anne drags underneath to remove the molded piece from her wheel. After 25 years of practice, Anne said her hands have memorized much of the days’ work. “It’s a physical skill. You have a physical memory of the clay,” she said, stressing that practice is the key. “You can take as many lessons as want but until you are making and practicing and playing with the clay you are not going to improve.” And even after years of practice, after days of perfecting a piece, Anne said an item still might end up in the salvage pile. So many things can go wrong in the process after you’ve thrown the perfect pot. “People are passionate about this. They either love it or hate it,” she said.

23325 Amphitheater Drive, Orange Beach 7 - 10 p.m. General Admission Pit: $125, Reserved Seats: $125, $85.50 $45.50 **Plus Applicable Fees & Service Charges**

Singer Eric Church was born on May 3, 1977, in Granite Falls, North Carolina, and he took up the guitar at 13 and began writing songs. A natural-born performer, Church had a regular gig at a bar as a high school student and received an offer for a record deal as a teen, but he turned it down. After high school, he attended Appalachian State University as part of a deal he had made with his father. Church earned a degree in marketing in exchange for financial support for a year in Nashville. While still a student, he managed to find time for his music and performed in a group called the Mountain Boys. After graduation, Church went to Nashville to pursue a career in country music, starting out as a songwriter

before landing a record deal in 2006. His first album, "Sinners Like Me," came out that same year, and, drawing inspiration from earlier country outlaws like Waylon Jennings, Church showcased his country rock sound on such tracks as “Guys Like Me.” Church also earned a reputation for being a rebel around this time as well, after being fired as the opening act for Rascal Flatts. According to Rolling Stone, Church got axed for playing too long. “We’ve never been a good opening act,” he explained. But Church’s loss became Taylor Swift’s gain. She replaced him on the tour, which gave her career a huge boost. Church’s career really began to soar with 2009’s "Carolina." The song “Love Your Love the Most” became his first substantial showing on the charts followed by “Hell on the Heart” and “Smoke a Little Smoke.” Church also developed a following with his impressive live shows. As he told Rolling Stone, “When we go out there, I want to be the act that, no matter who’s in that crowd, they’ve never seen a better act than me. I’m gonna empty the tank.” Church picked up his first major award the following year when he was named the best new solo vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 2010. With 2011’s "Chief," Church had an even greater

success. The album’s title comes from his nickname, one that first belonged to his maternal grandfather. Debuting at the top of the country charts, the recording had two No. 1 hits: the good-time anthem “Drink in My Hand” and the nostalgic “Springsteen.” Not only had a smash with country fans, "Chief" won Church numerous accolades, such as album of the year honors at the Country Music Association Awards in 2012. In 2014, Church released "The Outsiders," on which he continued to fuse country and rock to make his own distinctive sound. The record featured the hit “Give Me Back My Hometown,” a song that won over both fans and critics alike. It has since been nominated for two CMA awards, including song of the year.
