Best Views Possible By Destiny Brown
It’s great to spend your vacation relaxing near the gentle waves of the Gulf of Mexico. But if you are looking for an outing that is a little more adrenaline pumping, several beach attractions can help you touch the sky, challenge your equilibrium and test the limits of your bravado.
Chute for the Sky Parasailing If you want to see the beach and the Gulf waters from above, take a parasailing ride with Chute for the Skye. The ride helps passengers soar up to 400 feet above the water, the highest allowed by federal regulations. From there you have the best view of the Alabama sands along Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Perdido Key. Parasailing also offers passengers a chance to see some of the wildlife that is special to the area such as dolphins, sea turtles, stingrays and more. Chute for the Sky owns four 12-passenger boats that take out guests every day beginning at 9 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m. Flights launch every half hour. The company began in May, 2011 and
holds a 100 percent safety record. Employees are quick to note that their first responsibility is safety. “We like to say we take fun seriously,” said SJ Collins, owner of Chute for the Skye. “The whole activity has a very serious side to it. We like to say if we won’t fly my kids, we won’t fly you or yours. We inspect all equipment frequently and we also watch the weather very closely.” Collins said he enjoys the family friendly aspect of the area. “Orange Beach is growing,” Collins said. “It’s definitely a great place for people to bring their families to. The family environment that Orange Beach offers is very appealing to a lot of people.”

Orange Beach Helicopters Orange Beach Helicopters has been on the Gulf Coast for over five years and has brought new experiences and memories to any passenger interested in taking a flight. Orange Beach Helicopter’s parent company, Fly Oasis, is based in Newnan, Ga., and operated by Air Force Col. Steve Olive, ret. All of the flights are customizable as long as it’s in the time frame of the trip you purchase. Orange Beach Helicopters take scenic tours from the Caribe Resort in Orange Beach all the way to West Pass by the Little Lagoon. Some flights stretch as far as Fort Morgan. “Being a pilot, my favorite thing about the flights would be the scenery,” said Corey Wallace, senior pilot. “You can’t beat it when you’re flying over the islands, especially at Perdido Pass, over the rocks and islands. As for business, the best thing is helping out with the community.” Expect to be thrilled on these custom flights, especially if you’re a first time flyer. “It’s nice for people to come in who have never flown or been off the ground,” Wallace said. “Those are my favorite flights because they’re flying for the first time. It’s not like going up on a ferris wheel or parasailing. It’s not the same thing as actually getting into the helicopter and they may be scared at first, but as soon as they get off the ground they just have a smile from ear to ear. And I think you only feel that the first time you take flight and we’re honored we can do that for our customers.”

Why simply fly along the coastline when you can touch the sky? Visitors to BeachFlight Aviation don’t ride on airplanes. They have nicknamed this vehicle the “motorcycle in the sky.” “It’s nimble, maneuverable, the view is unobstructed, it’s just fabulous,” said Gary Berdeaux, owner of BeachFlight Aviation. “It’s the sensation of freedom. You just want to stretch out. This is as close as you can get to feeling like you are really flying.” Unlike other small planes, like Cessnas, the planes used by BeachFlight have no cockpits. Instead, riders sit in the small, two-seat vehicle. The wings are perched above the riders’ heads. BeachFlight Aviation uses P&M Aviation aircraft manufactured in the UK. Currently there are 4,000 of these types of crafts flying around the world. The crafts hold the speed and distance
world records. They are sometimes called “Trikes” or powered hang gliders. Regardless of what you call them, a ride with BeachFlight will get you as close to the clouds as you can come. “When you get into a Cessna it feels like you are in a volkswagon with wings. You don’t feel like you are out in the environment,” Berdeaux said. The trikes can fly as high as 10,000 feet. Any higher and flyers will miss the view down below. Berdeaux said from his aerial vantage point he has seen sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, turtles, migrating sting rays and other creatures. If the water is clear he can also see shipwrecks along the coastline. “From the air you get a view you don’t get any other way,” he said.

Want to see the Blue Angels fly? If you are visiting Alabama’s coast, you can see them thunder overhead without waiting for an airshow. The Navy’s world-famous, aerobatic flying team calls Pensacola home and practices regularly between March and November. The team usually practices Tuesday and Wednesdays, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and can be seen zooming and diving for about 55 minutes. All practices are subject to change depending on weather and the needs of the military. There are lots of great places to set up camp and watch them soar. Here is a list of some of the best places to watch the show.
National Naval Aviation Museum 1750 Radford Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32508 navalaviationmuseum.org
Visitors can sit, for free, outside along the museum flight Line. There are bleachers
and limited parking. Posted signs will point you to the right place. There is a 100 percent ID check for all visitors ages 16 and above. Backpacks, daypacks and luggage are not allowed on the flight line. Small purses and diapers bags are allowed but will be searched by security. Concessions and merchandise are available for purchase. Parents may want to bring hearing protection for small children.
Sail Wild Hearts

If you thought the show was good on land, wait to you see it on water. Sail Wild Hearts, located across the street from Perdido Beach Resort, offers a sailing excursion during the aviators’ weekly practices. The ship, a 53-foot catamaran sailboat, drops anchor in front of the Pensacola Lighthouse to give visitors the best view possible. “They know our boat,” said Debbie Sims, public relations, marketing and events director for Sail Wild Hearts. “They swoop

down over us and buzz the boat. “It’s spectacular. Everybody gets so excited. Even the adults act like little kids,” she said. Enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks during the voyage. There are also kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment on board, available at no extra charge. The Blue Angels Sail in the summer months costs $125 for adults and $90 for children ages 12 and under, plus tax. Prices drop in fall and winter months.
Dolphin Tales

Dolphin Tales, docked at Perdido Key Oyster Bar and Marina, also offers a seafaring Blue Angels adventure. Captain Bart Bowers said his 40-foot boat offers the perfect venue for families who want to avoid the crowds and the hot sun.
“It’s an unobstructed view versus being on the tarmac,” he said. “There is less traffic, less people and they are about 500 feet above our heads. We are in full view of all their different stunts.” Bower’s boat is fully shaded, holds 36 passengers and has a restroom aboard. Cost is $55 for adults and $40 for children ages 12 and under. Children ages two and under are free.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

BEACH ART
Sandy Hinchey Driftwood Artist
“What inspires me is when Gulf waters wash up a piece of wood and I get to turn it into something beautiful.” By Destiny Brown
Sandy Hinchey says she has always been crafty. But when she moved to Fairhope, the Tennessee native was introduced to a new kind of craft: driftwood art. “We had a lot of driftwood that just washed up at our house,” Hinchey said. “We would throw it away in the woods. I thought it was beautiful wood and started collecting it.” The first driftwood piece that Hinchey created was a 6-foot-long fish the she created with her son. The piece was sold to a fishing magazine and she realized she just might be able to make a living with her art. Her best friend persuaded her into creating an Etsy page, and her art began to sell. “My first year I sold 12 items, and last year I sold over 250 items and this year I’m already way past that,” Hinchey said. “It’s allowed me to do it full-time and I love doing it. I love creating things and making them unique.” Hinchey has a large wood pile in her back yard that includes driftwood, plywood, PVC pipes and oyster shells. All of it is used in her crafts. “Sometimes I go to the pile of wood
24 Beachin’ ● July 2017
and just study it for a while,” Hinchey said. “Something will hit me and I’ll find the perfect piece and make something out of it.” She says it’s important to use quality tools and her favorite tool to use with driftwood is a nail gun. Hinchey started selling locally first, but soon expanded her business to worldwide sales. “I started out local and I worked at Estate Jewelers in Fairhope and brought my stuff in and people started buying it and then I began getting requests from restaurants, and then Oh So Coastal! and they bought a lot of my products,” Hinchey said. “Most of my work is sold online, in the country and out of the country. I take custom orders, menu boards are one of my specialties so I sell to a lot of restaurants and a lot of wineries.” Hinchey may be best known for her oyster flowers which she customizes with oysters from Bon Secour. “I’m known as the oyster flower lady. When we have the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival, I usually sell out the first day,” she said. Since moving to the Gulf Coast, Hinchey said she is thankful that her art supplies wash up right to her backyard.
“Where I came from, Tennessee, you don’t have driftwood that just washes up in front of your house. I find all of these unique pieces you can make something out of,” Hinchey said. “Just being on the bay and seeing what washes up is nice.” Visit Hinchey’s Etsy page at 3driftsaway.com to put in your custom order. You can also find her artwork at Southern Antiques on Highway 98 in Fairhope, booth 141.

Red Snapper Season It’s finally here. The long awaited red snapper season has begun and after a rocky start federal authorities and the five Gulf states agreed for the first time in a decade to align their recreational snapper seasons. The new season dates begun June 16 and continue for 39 weekend days and holidays through Labor Day on Sept. 4. The season is closed Monday through Thursday in both the state and federal waters with the exceptions of July 3 and 4 and Sept. 4. Previous to this decision the 2017 federal red snapper season for private recreational anglers was limited to just three days, a move that drew the ire of officials at the federal, state and local levels. The supposed reason for the short season is that a poundage quota is set by the feds, and since such small limits have been allowed for several years, the snapper are larger, thus filling the quota faster. After the original 3-day season angered fishermen and local authorities, the season was changed. The limit is still just two per person per day with a minimum size of 16 inches total length. Be aware that Dauphin Island Marine Resource Enforcement
boats have a “filet sniffing dog” on board that can actually smell snapper filets hidden on you boat.
CATCH A SNAPPER
There are several ways to rig tackle for catching snapper. A knocker rigs is putting a lead egg sinker directly on top of your circle hook. Note: Circle hooks are required along with a dehooker and vent tool. Another method is to use a bank sinker on the bottom of your leader, come up about a foot, tie a loop in the line, add a hook, come up another foot, add a loop and another hook. This keeps the line and bait from twirling around if your sinker us positioned farther up the line. A variety of bait can be used. Snapper are not picky eaters. Use live croaker, pogies, pinfish, or frozen Spanish sardines or cigar minnows, or frozen squid. Jigs also work however you are required to use circle hooks.
WHERE TO CATCH
Where to fish in state waters? Marine resources has a free sheet of latitude and longitude waypoints, many within the nine mile limit that are public numbers. Also, fish hold around the abundance of gas rigs within state waters.
