Any day of the week during the summer, you can find live music somewhere at the beach. Whether it’s an open mic night, a standing-room-only show, or simply background music while you wine and dine, the chances to hear your favorite song are probable. The Hot Spot Music and Grub in Orange Beach has been welcoming solo artists and bands to their stage since 2014. The local venue located at The Wharf is just one of the venues in the area that 8 Beachin’ ● August 2016
host music up to seven times a week during the busy summer season. The Gulf Coast is a supportive area for musicians. There is a variety of songwriter showcases, sold out concerts and hundreds of local venues that host live music. “I think the Gulf Coast supports local music better than anywhere else,” Bobby Graves, owner of the Hot Spot, said. “You have more musicians and more venues than anywhere else. It’s a
good place for a lot of solo artists. If you go anywhere else, you have music on just Friday and Saturday. Down here, you can find music somewhere all the time.” The Hot Spot Music and Grub is a proud supporter of original music. The venue hosts the Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout, which will be on six Monday’s beginning Sept. 12. It is also one of the many venues for the artists participating in the nationally recognized Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival. “So many artists come through when the Frank Brown and Songwriter Shootout come around,” Graves said. “With songwriters down here, you never know who you’re going to see. We see artists with No. 1 hits play in this area all the time.” A well-known songwriter’s festival to see No. 1 hit songwriters, up and coming artists, and just all-around original music is the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival. This year on Nov. 3-13, the event will expand to more than 30 venues and more than 200 artists will perform throughout Baldwin County in Alabama and Escambia County, Fla. “Flora-Bama began the festival 32 years ago,” Jenifer Surface, marketing director of Flora-Bama, said. “It’s named after Frank Brown, who was night watchman at FloraBama for 28 years. Joe Gilchrist, co-owner of Flora-Bama, started this festival because he

had a love for songwriters and always took care of them and it’s grown from there.” Flora-Bama is the main hub for the songwriter festival and will have local musicians and traveling artists all day every day during the event. There will also be some big name artists taking the stage throughout the festival at Flora-Bama. There is a selection process to perform in the Frank Brown. Artists from all over the country, mostly the southeast, apply each year. “It’s a process where you have to apply to be in the festival and the people on the Frank Brown board sift through those,” Surface said. “I think they’re trying to have a good variety.” During the songwriter festival, three to four musicians will 10 Beachin’ ● August 2016
share the stage in a song rotation. It’s requested that you don’t speak while the artists are performing. “When you have a songwriters special, you see the person who wrote the song and they can tell where it came from, where they were, when it became an idea,” Surface said. “So it’s a completely different take on a normal concert or show where you hear your favorite songs.” If you want to try out your talent, check out an open mic night at the beach. There are a few places such as Tacky Jacks in Gulf Shores and Flora-Bama in Perdido Key that host weekly open mic nights and invite any musician to take the stage. With all of the great opportunities to hear original music, some vacationers would still like to hear their sing-a-long
tunes, and many musicians in the area aim to please. Local musician, Mel Knapp, knows how to take the stage. Switching between original tunes and crowd favorites, he knows how to fill up the tip jar. Mel plays solo and is in the band, Nick and the Ovorols. He performs on stage sometimes seven times a week on the Gulf Coast. “I enjoy many things about being a musician,” Knapp said. “I guess my favorite part is knowing that you made someone happier than before they met you or heard you start playing.” Like most musicians in the area, Knapp credits the happy vibe here on the Gulf Coast for making his job so pleasurable. “The best thing about being a Gulf Coast musician compared to being a musician in other places is the mindset,” Knapp said. “The whole care free, island time, beach bum mindset. The people that come here adopt the mindset, and the people that live here naturally have it. The people that come here want to have a good time and the people that live here live to have a good time!” The musicians, the crowd and the venue agree that music brings a good time with it. It can be a solo act or it can be a band, but the music scene on the Gulf Coast is larger and growing more than surrounding areas. “There are a cast of characters down here on the Gulf Coast and the greatest characters to me are the musicians,” Knapp said. “And the fun that we have on stage is infectious to anyone around us whether it be people eating in a restaurant or people in a concert venue that want to just have a good time.”

Top of the Hops
Beer Festival An evening of beer, brews and entertainment at The Wharf by Destiny Brown More than 150 world-class beers will be available at the 5th Annual Top of the Hops event at the Wharf in Orange Beach. On Saturday, Aug. 13, beer and spirit patrons (who are over 21) are invited to the Marina Lawn from 4-8 p.m. for food, music and of course, a sampling of brews. “New Belgium has sponsored two of the past five years and does an awesome job at providing new Belgium beers for people to sample at the event,” Pete Teske, craft manager of Gulf Distributing, said. Top of the Hops has stayed true to its host, The Wharf, during the past years of the event. The scenery and restaurant and entertainment opportunities are what draws the event to the Orange Beach entertainment district each year. “Being on the Marina Lawn and overlooking boats is a peaceful setting and provides a nice environment for people to relax, let their guard down and sample a bunch of different beers,” Teske said. “And then afterwards, there’s not a shortage of wonderful restaurants to go to and stuff to keep the family entertained.” There will be an option to purchase V.I.P tickets, which allow an earlier entrance at 3 p.m. with food and other special perks. The Brew University will have education sessions throughout the afternoon on topics such as pairing beer with food, Brewing 101, news from around the brewing world and much more. Top of the Hops Cornhole Tournament will be part of the event and the winner goes home with a custom cornhole board set. Tops of the Hops will also have a Silent Disco. Patrons can put on a pair of the provided headphones and dance to music that only they can hear. It’s an amazing site to see. The Mixology Garden returns this year with sweet samplings 16 Beachin’ ● August 2016
of hand-crafted beer cocktails crafted by local Orange Beach bartenders. This year, there will be a few new beer selections added to the event. “Trim Tab out of at Birmingham, Singin’ River out of Florence and Red Hare Brewing out of Marietta, Ga., are a few new additions this year,” Teske said. “And some new brands from the breweries we’ve had in the past. There are more than I can list and many good ones that people should be looking forward to.” The Top of the Hops has been a successful event in the area for the past five years and continues to grow. “A lot of the featured breweries make their beer in very small batches and are very careful in determining where they put the beer based on the impact they’ll have with the people that will be reaching them,” Teske said. “These special spirits are highly regarded and loved beers, so it’s a great sampling opportunity.” General admission tickets are $40 through Aug. 12 and will be $45 at the gate. VIP tickets are $75 in advance, $80 at the gate. Designated Driver tickets are $20 for general admission or $30 for VIP. Tickets are available at Montego’s Caribbean Café & Bar in Orange Beach and Mobile, online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-745-3000. “There’s not too many opportunities in lower Alabama where you get to try this many beers from such a modest entry fee,” Teske said. “If you were to go to a bar for the ticket price, you won’t get to try this many beers.” For more information, visit TopOfTheHopsBeerFest.com/ Wharf or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for your chance to win tickets and learn more about the great craft beers that will be at this year’s festival.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Craig Reynolds Watercolor, Oil Paint, Plein Air and Studio Impressionism by Destiny Brown “I am a strong proponent for preserving the ‘old stuff,’ through my work as an artist. I believe every painting should tell a story, a story told with few words, but with visual representation and emotion.” “People ask me today ‘How long have you been painting?’ and my reply can only be, “Well as far back as I can remember, it’s simply something that we just always did.” Craig Reynolds comes from a long line of artists. His father was an artist who did his best to bestow his love for art onto his children. Reynolds caught on at an early age. Reynolds was born and raised in Gadsden but spent many summers and weekends in Bon Secour while his dad painted the shrimp boats. From watching his father paint, Reynolds developed a love for the “old stuff.” Any art that involves maritime history is his favorite subject. “I like the patina, the scars on the shrimp boat, the worn and dusty stuff,” Reynolds said. “I am a strong proponent for preserving the ‘old stuff,’ through my work as an artist. I believe every painting should tell a story, a story told with few words, but with visual representation and emotion.” Reynolds has maintained his art business as a second job for most of his life. He began painting abstract barns with watercolor in college, and soon learned more techniques and styles to build on. Reynolds is mainly focused on plein air painting. Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. This allows artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” Reynolds incorporates the “mother, color bending method,” a 18 Beachin’ ● August 2016
difficult technique that includes bending the light and color. Reynolds and his wife recently retired to Gulf Shores, but continue to travel throughout the southeast promoting his art. He has also made extensive travels to Eklutna Glazier, Alaska, Pt. Clyde, Maine and up and down the east coast. Reynolds hosts workshops, one-on-one classes, and competes in many plein air artist events including quick draw competitions and plein air paint-offs. One of his goals is to develop more interest in plein art painting, spread the word and develop a local plein air group. Reynolds has been a member of the Dobbin Gallery at Kiawah Island and Charleston, The Gale Gallery in New Orleans, The Renaissance Gallery in Tuscaloosa and more. He is currently displayed in the Blue Phrog Gallery in Montevallo, The Fairhope Artist Gallery in Fairhope, The Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Gallery in Gulf Shores and On the Waterfront Gallery in Apalachicola – one of the leading plein art centers in the United States. Reynolds will be instructing a Plein Air Workshop at the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Gallery in Waterway Village at 225 E 24th Ave., Gulf Shores on Oct. 21-22. He will also be hosting a Plein Air Painters Paint Out on Nov. 3-5. The event welcomes 60 artists to participate in a three-day painting excursion, quick draw competition, and will end with a wet paint sale at the Art Market on Saturday, Nov. 5. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 20 Beachin’ ● August 2016
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

The Bull Reds are back!
Finally after a month, Bull Reds are back on Dixie Bar. Red Snapper season is over so now what? Water temps are hot and many of the fish seem to move out to deeper cooler water. However King and Spanish mackerel are still around. Troll around Gulf rigs, or the R.V. Minton nearshore reef zones located out of Perdido Pass. I recently caught a small mahi in that same area. Another option for the Dauphin Island area is to find an anchored Shrimp boat. They usually shrimp at night and anchor during the day. The shrimpers will shove their bycatch overboard which attracts lots of jack crevalle and bonita. Just toss over a pogie and hang on for a real battle. Neither fish are any good to eat but you won’t find a near shore fish that fights any harder. Capt. Phil 251-223-3682 islandwestcharters.com
