Gone Fishin’ By Destiny Brown There are many questions that come up for first time charter fishermen. Whether you’re chartering a boat and captain for a few friends or the whole family, the fishing experience can be thrilling and a memory that will last a lifetime. We asked a few of the local captains what to expect while spending a day charter boat fishing on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Coast has the largest artificial reef program in the world and is also the red snapper capital of the world, so you can see why so many fishermen and captains want to land here! Zeke’s Landing Marina at 26619 Perdido Beach Blvd. in Orange Beach has the largest charter boat fleet in the Gulf of Mexico. The marina is home to 46 captains providing an excellent fishing experience for their guests. The marina holds about 50/50 as far as multipassenger and six passenger boats. “We have the best fishermen, probably in the world. It’s the only place I know of that you can go out with a captain and they guarantee you’ll catch fish,” said Tom Steber, general manager of Zeke’s Landing Marina. Steber has been associated with Zeke’s for over 21 years and has had a first-hand look at how the captains treat their guests. “My favorite thing about this marina is the captains,” Steber said. Trips at Zeke’s go out seven days a week, year-round, weather permitting. Zeke’s Landing is a six-acre complex that also offers a dock store, water sport rentals, parasailing, gift shops, restaurants, dry storage, permanent and transient wet slips, showers, telephones, marine parts, accessories and yacht brokerage.

CHARTER BOAT – MULTI-PASSENGER

Tips Etiquette

Big Adventure CAPTAIN JIMMY WALLER

PASSENGERS ON BOAT: Up to 21 MILES OUT: Depends on trip length and what you’re fishing for. Generally stays between 90 and 120 on multi-day trips. AMENITIES: Big Green Egg grill on board and guests bring their own meals to cook and drinks. All fishing equipment is included. On board: cabin, restroom, two deckhands.

Jimmy Waller has been in the charter boat business for 34 years and at Zeke’s since it opened. His boat, Big Adventure, takes trips that range from six hours to multiple days. “In this area, we have it all,” Waller said. “Every kind of grouper, basically all snappers. It’s such a wide variety. When it comes to blue water fishing we’re very lucky we’re not too far from the mouth of the river in Louisiana and the floating oil rigs, which make offshore fishing second to none.” If you’re a first time fisherman, Waller has some advice that will make the most of your trip. “Don’t have a crazy expectation,” Waller said. “The people who step on the boat and just want to have a good day generally have the best trip. We fish for what’s biting and catch the most fish they can possibly catch. I’m out there every day so

I know what’s going on. The moon phase and tide phase goes into effect in what’s biting. First timers should just be courteous, tip your deckhands and go with the flow and have a good time” Waller enjoys his job because it doesn’t feel like work to him. “Going home at night and just knowing that as a kid growing up, it was my dream,” Waller said. “I love to fish and I turned my hobbies into a career. The fact that I can do what I love, you can’t put a price on it.”

SIX PACK BOAT

Miss Madison CAPTAIN KYLE PARTAIN

PASSENGERS ON BOAT: Up to six MILES OUT: Up to nine miles from the beach AMENITIES: Cooler on board for guests meals and waters, walk-in restroom on board, seating. All fishing equipment included and 20 percent tip suggested for deckhand.

A six pack boat is a state boat that is a smaller charter boat for your fishing adventure that can host up to six passengers. The boat specializes in families and the cost is lower than a larger charter boat. Captain Partain has been with Zeke’s for 12 years and bought his six pack boat, Miss Madison, three years ago. “My favorite thing about it is enjoying watching kids to grown-ups get excited and the expression on their face when they land a fish,” Partain said. “That is what drives me in this business.” Partain says he enjoys working with first-time fishermen the most. “I love working with first timers because they listen to the tips you give them on hooking and fighting the fish,” Partain said. “If you’re prone to motion sickness, take medicine the night before 10 Beachin’ ● August 2017

and an hour before the trip.” Partain credits the network of captains at Zeke’s Landing Marina for helping him along during his captain career. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the captains here helping me out,” Partain said.

• Dress for comfort. Bring sunscreen, a camera, sunglasses and wear soft light colored sole shoes. • Avoid rich food and excessive alcohol the night before. Eat a light breakfast and if taking motion sickness medication please follow directions. • Bring an ample supply of snacks and drinks. It is customary to bring snacks and drinks for your captain and crew. • Please respect the boat and equipment. Your captain and crew have a lot of pride in their vessels and equipment can be costly to you if damaged or lost overboard. • Deckhands work hard for you and have pride in your catch. Their day starts several hours before your trip and extends hours after you are gone. We recommend a 15 percent to 20 percent tip over and above a fish cleaning fee. • Make sure you choose a trip that suits you. Our fleet offers 4-hour trips all the way up to 3-day trips. Your captain can assist you in choosing the appropriate trip to meet your needs. • Always inquire about payment method, cancellation and bad weather policies. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BOOK THE PERFECT FISHING TRIP

SIX PASSENGER “SIX PACK” DEEP SEA FISHING A six passenger offshore charter boat is also known as a “six pack” boat. These boats can carry one to six passengers at a time. Many trips are taken with two to three people. Depending on the length of the trip you have chosen you may either stay nearshore or go further offshore. There is usually a direct correlation between the length of the charter trip and the distance you can go offshore. Weather and sea conditions are also factors as well as the fish you want to target. BOAT SIZES: Boats range from 30’ to 50’ in size. One thing the boats have in common is that they are designed to operate in a nearshore to offshore environment and provide a safe and comfortable ride. RATES, PRICING AND FEES: Most boats offer private fishing charters. This means the fees paid are for the entire group, one to six people and for an agreed number of hours. Some six pack boats do offer shared expense trips. Fish cleaning is generally 30 cents a pound (whole fish estimated weight). Customary gratuity for your deckhand is 15 to 20 percent of the trip price. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SIX PASSENGER “SIX PACK” DEEP SEA FISHING BOAT: • Ideal for people who want to go deep sea fishing in small groups of up to six people maximum. • These boats can take you near the beach (nearshore fishing) or offshore (deep sea fishing). • All boats have a restroom on board. • Most have a shaded area to get out of the sun or an air conditioned cabin. Many are heated as well for comfortable winter fishing.

INSHORE/ NEARSHORE FISHING On the Alabama Gulf Coast, you have the opportunity to fish in the Bay, Bayou, Delta or nearshore. Each venue provides a variety of fish. Short fishing trips, four hours or less, as well as all day fishing trips are available. Each boat provides bait, tackle and fishing licenses. You will need a cooler for your drinks and snacks. The goal of each captain is to provide a safe, fun, memorable fishing trip for your group. Children are most welcomed! Captains enjoy their work and are willing to share their skills so that you will have a successful trip. When you call your captain to book a fishing trip, please leave a message because they may be fishing at the time. Your call will receive a response and together you can plan your trip.

MULTI- PASSENGER DEEP SEA FISHING A multi-passenger offshore charter boat offers many options. These charter boats can carry up to a maximum number of passengers determined by their COI (Certificate of Inspection) issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The length of the trip and the distance traveled offshore is generally determined by weather, sea conditions and the fish you want to target.

HEAD BOAT/ PARTY BOAT DEEP SEA FISHING A Head Boat offshore charter boat offers an economical way to get out fishing and usually bring home dinner. All boats are U.S. Coast Guard inspected with clean restrooms, clean interior salons and always helpful, friendly crews. The length of the trip and distance traveled offshore is generally determined by weather, sea conditions and the fish you want to target. BOAT SIZES: Boats range from 57’ to 65’ in size. RATES, PRICING AND FEES: Boats offer individual and group pricing. You can come alone or bring a large group (50 to 66 people). Fish cleaning is generally 30 cents per pound (whole fish estimated weight). Customary gratuity for your deckhand is 15 to 20 percent of the trip price. All tackle, bait and license is provided (including rods and reels though feel free to bring your own). Remember to bring your own lunch, snacks and beverages.

BOAT SIZES: Boats range from 36’ to 65’ in size. One thing the boats have in common is that they are designed to operate in an offshore environment and provide a safe and comfortable ride. These boats are safety inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard. RATES, PRICING AND FEES: Most boats offer private fishing charters. This means the fees paid are for the entire group, up to 66 people and for an agreed number of hours. Fish cleaning is generally 30 cents per pound (whole fish estimated weight). Customary gratuity for your deckhand is 15 to 20 percent of the trip price. CHARACTERISTICS OF A MULTI-PASSENGER DEEP SEA FISHING BOAT: • Ideal for people who want to go deep sea fishing and have seven or more people in their group. These boats will accommodate groups of six or less, however the private charter rate is slightly higher than their six pack counterparts. • Some boats offer per person or walk-on shared expense charters where you can pay to join other passengers, thus keeping the cost per person down. • Most have shaded area to get out of the sun or an air conditioned cabin. Many are heated as well for comfortable winter fishing. August 2017 ● Beachin’ 11

Take a Day Trip:

A Walk in the

Woods Rain can make trails muddy and slippery. Closed-toed shoes recommended. 16 Beachin’ ● August 2017

Volunteers and staff members installed new trail signs this past winter across the parks' more than six miles of trails.

If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea to take up your vacation time, load up and take a day trip! There are many places for all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and create new memories!

By Allison Marlow

In addition to our fantastic beaches, how about a walk through pine savannas, mixed bottomland forest, and pitcher plant bogs? Graham Creek Nature Preserve is a 487 acre property owned by the city of Foley, located less than 30 minutes from the beach. The park is home to hiking trails, two full 18 basket disc golf courses, a large pavilion, an archery park, picnic areas, playground and swings, a canoe/kayak launch on Graham Creek and weekly events. Last year employees and volunteers at Graham Creek Nature Preserve added trail markers and improved existing signs along the park’s nearly six miles of trails. Officials there said time had worn

away much of the existing signage and an earlier expansion of paths through the property meant more signs were needed. Want to spend a day in the park? Be sure to bring bug spray and sunscreen. Dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash. Also, rainy days make many of the trails muddy, so closed-toed shoes are highly recommended. Now, visitors can access the signs with ease and confidence. The trails have been color-coded to match a revised map available at the visitor center. The trails, which range in length from a 5K to a handicapped accessible .1 mile are open from sunup to sundown every day. For more information about the park’s upcoming events, visit GrahamCreekPreserve.com

CROSS COUNTRY TRAIL (BLUE TRAIL)

3.1 mile (5k) hiking trail that crosses all habitats over 400 acres throughout the Preserve. This trail is challenging with muddy areas and rustic trails. Starts and ends on north side of canoe launch parking area on Stan Mahoney Lane

MILK WORT TRAIL (RED TRAIL)

1.5 mile walking trail that crosses Graham Creek and loops through mixed forest habitat. Starts and ends near canoe launch parking area on Stan Mahoney Lane.

PITCHER PLANT LOOP TRAIL (YELLOW TRAIL)

1.2 mile trail which crosses wildflower and pitcher plant habitats and offers great birdwatching opportunities. Trail head is located south of the Interpretive Center adjacent to Philhomene Holmes Blvd.

ADA TRAIL (ORANGE TRAIL)

This short (.1 mi.) meanders into native pine savannah habitat, designed for standards of Disabilities Act. Trail head is at west side of Interpretive Center. August 2017 ● Beachin’ 17

BEACH ART

Jason Patton Drip Artist

“I’m not a big follower of art. I want to have these original ideas in my head as opposed to seeing someone else’s work and stealing that, because there are people out there who do that. What I do isn’t what everyone else down here does. It’s not all sea life or the ocean.”

By Destiny Brown

Jason Patton is known locally for his original drip art. His creations can be found all around venues at the beach and range from sea life to city scenes to portraits. Patton took his first step into art when he took classes at The University of Texas. He received an art degree, specializing in painting. “At the end of a semester I didn’t have enough art work so I grabbed a couple of canvasses and started splattering paint like Jackson Pollock did,” Patton said. “I laid the canvass flat on the ground. The second one I started walking around it and trying to make different thinks look like something, kind of like clouds. Each side has something different that I could see, but not necessarily anybody else.” After college, Patton put his art career to the side for 17 years before moving to the Gulf Coast and re-pursuing his passion. “Originally I was doing things I like, but I found out what I like doesn’t necessarily sell,” Patton said. “Last year, I had a lot of people who wanted specific things done. I learned that if you figure out what the customer wants and agree on a price then it’s already sold. Occasionally I still paint some things that I think are interesting.” Patton’s paint of choice is interior house latex paint. “I used to hesitate telling people I was an artist because people have an idea of what an artist is,” Patton said. “I’m not a big follower of art. I want to have these original ideas in my head as opposed to seeing someone 22 Beachin’ ● August 2017

else’s work and stealing that, because there are people out there who do that. What I do isn’t what everyone else down here does. It’s not all sea life or the ocean.” As for inspiration, Patton says he likes a little bit of a challenge. That’s why he takes custom orders only from anyone interested in having an original piece of aspect art. To contact Jason Patton for a custom painting, call him at 512-590-0553 or email jasoncpatton@msn.com. His murals can be found locally at Orange Beach Tropical Sno, Our Cigar Bar at The Wharf, Cosmo’s restaurant and Island Girl in Gulf Shores.

Tropical Storm Cindy has really put a damper on fishing around the Alabama Gulf Coast including area rivers and Mobile Bay. With all the rain, the usual salt waters are now flooded with fresh water, which doesn’t make most of the fish happy. Many of the fish like Speckled Trout, Redfish, Spanish and King Mackeral like a certain water salinity. In addition to that, the waters are muddy in the bay and even 20 miles east of Ft. Morgan toward Orange Beach. Fortunately, the Red Snapper bite has not been hindered. Often

on fishin with Phil Dortch

times, when there is lots of rain, the top portion of the water column will be fresh water, but due to the density of salt water, the bottom water column will still be salty enough to sustain some fish. To refresh your memory regarding the new current Red Snapper season, we are only allowed to keep our limit of two snapper, either in State or Federal waters on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the exception of Labor day. Rules are a little more complex for inshore/nearshore charter guides, such as myself. We can only retain

Redfish, Spanish and King Mackerel within three miles of shore, since the nine mile Alabama state waters only apply to Red Snapper season. That means when we take a charter fishing trip, we must first fish for Snapper up to nine miles offshore, then return within three miles if we want to keep anything. Confusing? Yes, but that’s the law. Note that none of this charter info applies to the recreational fisherman. In spite of the all the current water conditions, nothing stays the same, water will clear soon, fish will return and yes, that’s fishin’.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!
