About the cover artist, Robert Towson I've won poster contests in the past, including The Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival (2000), and the Pensacola Jazz Fest (2001, 2004). So, I like a challenge and decided to try the Annual National Shrimp Festival (again). As an airbrush artist on the Gulf Coast for 18 years, I was exposed to a lot of various styles and learned to design and paint for the T-shirt. I brought some of that whacky, cartoony influence to this piece. The heavy lines and bold colors, with balloon lettering comes from the 60's and 70's when I was coming of age artistically and reading Zap Comics. Album cover art of that era influenced this composition as well. It feels GREAT to win this prestigious (yet very cool) poster competition for a second time (2014). I started airbrushing at the Beach Bum in Spring of '87 in Gulf Shores, so I feel like I've come full circle in some respects. It's humbling because I know that there's a lot of good art out there in this kind of competition and this illustration will be marketed quite extensively along the coast. So, I am thrilled at having my art recognized; it's encouraging to me in my efforts to present my artistic vision to the public. I began my artistic calling around age 4, scraping chocolate pudding from the bottom of a bowl; I saw cylinders, logs, 3 dimensional shapes (try it sometime)...then it was crayons on the walls. Wound up enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Murray St Univ. in Western Ky. Before moving on and becoming an Illustrator/Draftsman in the Navy, fashion illustrator for the Gayfers stores in Pensacola, advertising artist at the News Journal and starting quite an eclectic freelance art run. My oil painting, THE WOUNDED was juried into America's Top 100 in 2011 and also published in the Univ. of South Alabama's "Oracle of Fine Arts Review" that same year. Once again, I am grateful for having my design selected for this year's poster.

History Annual National Shrimp Festival The Annual National Shrimp Festival is a Gulf Shores tradition dating back to 1971. What started as a way to bring tourists to the beach after Labor Day has evolved into one of the largest events of the Southeast. It all started when Lillian Bemis, a longtime agent of Century 21 Meyer Real Estate in Gulf Shores, was one of the 20,000 attendees at the Blessing of the Shrimp Boat Fleet in Bayou La Batre, AL. She wanted to bring that crowd home to Gulf Shores. After a few meetings with local residents and businesses, the National Shrimp Festival was born. The 1,500 festival attendees enjoyed arts and crafts, a sandcastle building contest, dancing, a beauty pageant, and in just 2 hours consumed over 50 gallons of gumbo! By 1984 the festival gathered over 140,000 in attendance and last year, officials estimate between 250,000 and 300,000 visitors experienced the Annual National

Shrimp Festival. Steve and Dee Burrow own and operate Sea Oat Studio. Mr. Burrow experienced his first Annual National Shrimp Festival as a Mobile, AL college student during its infancy in the 1970s. Soon after, he began exhibiting his hand-made pottery as a festival vendor. Burrow commented that the Annual National Shrimp Festival, now celebrating its 46th year, is a fun, sometimes quirky festival that is adored by its loyal and devoted fanbase of visitors and locals alike. Sea Oat Studio produces only 100 Special Edition Annual National Shrimp Festival ceramic mugs. Every year, even months before the festival, Burrow receives requests from festival regulars to reserve their mug. “We usually have about half sold before the festival starts,” Burrow said. “I had one customer who collected for CONTINUED ON PAGE

20 years and she passed away. But her kids now come down to continue the collection. The Shrimp Festival has moved down through the family which I think is really cool.” Over the years, the festival has grown by leaps and bounds. Many traditions remain including the Annual Seafood Cooking Contest (now known as “Best of the FEST”), the Sand Sculpture Contest and the support of the local residents and busi-

nesses. The festival is run by over 600 volunteers and they take great pride in hosting such a prominent event. The Annual National Shrimp Festival is held the second full weekend of October at the Gulf Shores public beach boardwalk. The backdrop of the beautiful white sand beaches and the gorgeous waters of the Gulf of Mexico make this a must attend event. Admission is free, family friendly, and open to the public.

Singing for Scholarships Move over shrimp, Baldwin County High School students are taking over the spotlight at the Annual National Shrimp Festival! On Saturday, October 14, students representing Baldwin County High Schools will perform center stage during the festival’s annual Singing for Scholarships competition. The event is sponsored by Re/Max Gulf Shores and chaired by Allison Hendricks, Dr. Jenny Manders, and Charley Ogletree. Local celebrities will act as judges as students perform in a series of elimination rounds until 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are announced. “We are trying to keep music in schools and we want to encourage the incredible talent in our area,” Hendricks said. “Music and the arts have both been put on the backburner in a lot of schools because they don’t have the money.” Students aren’t the only winners! The competition will donate match-

ing prizes of $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, and $250 for 3rd place to the winner’s school. “If we provide the prize money, we’ll be able to support these music programs to encourage kids to come on in and hone their talent here at the festival.” Several top scoring participants in past Singing for Scholarships competitions have found success on stages in cities like Nashville and New Orleans. Hendricks notes (pun intended), this event is often their first time on a big stage and it makes or breaks the decision to pursue singing as a career. “This gives them an opportunity to get the feeling of what it is like to be on a professional stage,” Hendricks said. “This is a really pivotal moment in many of their careers.” Come cheer for the Baldwin County high school vocalists as they perform on the West Stage on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 10 am.

E

ach year, over 5 million guests visit the 32 miles of sugarwhite sand beaches of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama. Colette Boehm, Director of Special Projects for Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism says, “We’ve been getting the word out to visitors that we want them to enjoy our beaches and take advantage of every opportunity here.” The Leave Only Footprints campaign began in 2007 as a grassroots initiative to protect and keep the beaches clean. In 2016, volunteers hauled an astonishing 161 tons of materials from the beaches includ-

ing 101.3 tons of trash, 18.5 tons of aluminum cans, 23.8 tons of plastic, and 18 tons of metal tent frames. In addition to collection, Beach Ambassadors participated in Leave Only Footprints education outreach, provided 5,653 trash bags to beachgoers, and filled over 2,000 sand holes to protect people and sea turtles from accidents. “We have to sustain what is so great about our beaches. When they [visitors] look off their balcony in the morning they will see the beautiful beaches, not trash left behind overCONTINUED ON PAGE

night,” Boehm said. “I have to give a huge shout out to the rental management companies who are getting the word out to our visitors. They’ve been a major part in that communications process and the cities are not only communicating but they are enforcing it. Everybody’s been very supportive.” During the Annual National Shrimp Festival, the Leave Only Footprints directives will act as a guide for organizers and attendees. Recycle bins will be available throughout the festival area to collect bottles, cans, and cardboard materials. Food vendors will also find collection areas for their leftover cooking oil. Organizers state that everything that can be recycled from the festival, will be recycled. Boehm remarked, “I think anytime we have an event of this size it is important to remind people. We love to not just tell people the rules but explain why it’s important. If visitors help us do this, next year the beach will be just as beautiful.” Slip on your sandals, smother on your sunscreen, and shade under your umbrella. Enjoy the Alabama Gulf Coast, but please, leave only footprints.

26 2017 Shrimp Festival

You can help protect local wildlife and preserve our coast for generations to come by practicing these simple Leave Only Footsteps practices: • Avoid walking on any beach vegetation. Plant roots hold together the fragile dunes. • Explore away from bird nesting areas. Nests may be located in the ground and camouflaged to resemble the surrounding environment, so please watch your step! • Consider the best type of transportation to see the island: your feet! Walking is not only a great form of exercise, but it’s an eco-friendly way to experience the Alabama Gulf Coast. • Pack up the beach chairs, gather the beach toys, fold and carry out the tent, and recycle or throw away all trash in a designated receptacle. All abandoned items will be removed for the protection of our beaches.

What did the Sea say to the Sand? Nothing, it simply waved! Don’t worry, the special guests of this year’s Annual National Shrimp Festival Sand Sculpture Contest, staff members of Sand Castle University in Gulf Shores, will do more than wave. They’ll be on site to offer advice and guidance as teams compete for money and prizes with their on-the-spot sand creations. The Sand Sculpture Contest is divided into four categories: 5-10 age group; 11-15 age group; 16 and older age group; and the family division for all ages. Judges will score participants on originality, creativity, skill, and overall appeal. Youth first prize winners will receive $50, a trophy, and a Shrimp Festival Poster. Adult and Family first prize winners will receive $100, a trophy, and a Shrimp Festival Poster. and natural elements found on the beach. Teams can bring any tools they like but cannot add any color to the sand. “We’ve just let people come and do their thing. The sculptures are always beautiful,” he said. The event is sponsored by Ike’s Beach Service and will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11 at the public beach access point located at west end of the Annual National Shrimp Festival. Organizers are encouraging families to come out and build together. The contest becomes part of the art of the festival and passersby come to admire the creations. There is no cost to enter, so get your buckets and shovels ready, your sand canvas awaits!

Sand Castle University offers these tips for building the best sand sculpture: 1. Use tons of water. Water is glue; dry sand will crumble. 2. Use tools, not hands. You never want to touch your creation with your hands. Tools will help create crisp lines. 3. Start at the top. Most people make the moat first and then carve the castle but that will cover up what you’ve already done. Always start at the top and work your way down. 4. Start with Plan A but be ready for Plan B. If the sand doesn’t want to cooperate, you have to work with it anyway. If an arch falls or a wall crumbles you have to work around it and style something else in that spot.

Shrimp Festival Represents the Ultimate Civic Unity The Annual National Shrimp Festival draws over 250,000 people each October. The event would be impossible without the combined efforts of both the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and the Gulf State Park. Collaborators agree that the region is at its prime when they work together. Respect, cooperation, and collaboration are the words that describe the behind the scenes production work of the Annual National Shrimp Festival.

32 2017 Shrimp Festival

State Representative Steve McMillan said, “There’s a lot involved after they close the tents for the night. They stay up late cleaning up, hauling trash and emptying boxes. Unless you stay there, you can’t appreciate how much they do overnight.” McMillan went on to say, “Most attendees don’t realize that the festival committee begins planning the next event the day after the current year’s event finishes. Behind the scenes, both cities are working around the clock to accommodate the influx of visitors to the island.” Organizers say they enjoy the fun and friendship with not only their local residents but also with attendees and volunteers from across the state and even the nation. “When government is working at its best, it brings constituents together from all over the state and Southeast to an event like this,” said Jerry Johnson, Orange Beach Councilman. “People come, enjoy, and have fun. They feel safe and secure.” McMillan recalls meeting a festival attendee from Oklahoma one year. The man was excited to bring Gulf shrimp back to his neighbors, and of course, come to next year’s festival again for more. “It’s a prime example of people coming to visit from all over the country,” McMillan said, “Everybody has clean, family entertainment here.”

Support Local Education at the Annual National Shrimp Festival Run and Golf Tournament The Annual National Shrimp Festival provides much more than food, art, and music on the Gulf Shores’ coast. Attendees are invited to participate in two additional Festival events hosted to raise money for local public schools: the 24th Annual Golf Tournament for Education held on September 8, 2017 and the 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival Run on October 14, 2017. The golf tournament raises money for public schools in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The annual tournament begins with a shotgun scramble start kicks off the event sending each four-person team across the luscious fairways of one of the area’s many premier golf courses. Entry fees are $500 per team or $125 per individual and costs include tournament participation, cart, range balls, two mulligans per team member, vendor activities, beverages, and lunch. The 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival Run 5K and 10K courses will navigate through the recently completed Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Complex. The race is coordinat-

34 2017 Shrimp Festival

ed both by the Lower Alabama Fleet Feet Running Club and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and is directed by Ginny Barnas, Richard Dickinson, and Frank Malone. Moreover, anyone who wants to participate is welcome; the trails are ADA compliant allowing access for wheelchairs the entire distance. “The run has been growing every year and now we have more and more participants with a wide range of athletic abilities who can participate. That was the goal. We’re very excited,” said Jerry Johnson, Orange Beach Councilman. Last year, the race hosted 600 runners and raised over $10,000 for public schools in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores as well as Shrimp Festival charities. Race director, Ginny Barnas concluded, “You can come by the 5K and still have plenty of time to enjoy the Shrimp Festival and the fun down there. It makes for a great destination weekend for families.” Runners can sign up until the morning of the race on October 14, 2017.

There are

types of shrimp found in the Gulf of Mexico

PINK SHRIMP:

ROYAL RED SHRIMP:

Have a more delicate sweet flavor. Found along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Shells are light pink and have a pearl-like texture. They are the largest Gulf shrimp species and can reach 11 inches in length.

Have a unique flavor. Found in the deepest waters of the Gulf. These shrimp are easily identified by their rich, deep red color.

BROWN SHRIMP:

Mild salty taste, firm. Found along salt marshes and on mud bottoms. They feed on kelp which gives them a more robust flavor. Brown shrimp are also firmer than most and hold their shape when boiled. This is the most popular variety of Gulf shrimp.

WHITE SHRIMP:

Firm and sweet. Found in brackish bayous and estuaries with low salinity. They feed on crustaceans and seaweed which strengthens the shell and gives the shrimp a rich flavor.

Cooking shrimp All Gulf shrimp varieties look the same or similar after they are cooked, though many people say they can taste the subtle differences in the varieties. Restaurants that serve Gulf shrimp usually serve the most popular variety, brown shrimp.

Packed with vitamins Alabama’s shrimp are low in saturated fat and rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and D.

JERROD NIEMANN Nashville prolific hitmaker Jerrod Niemann is speaking from his heart – instead of his liver – with his romantic new single, “God Made A Woman,” now impacting Country radio. Fueled by a nearly decade-long career, Niemann is digging deeper with his forthcoming Curb Records album featuring an uplifting duet, “A Little More Love,” with good friend and labelmate Lee Brice. Known for clever wordplay and attentiongrabbing lyrics, the highly engaging singer-songwriter last topped country charts with his PLATINUM-certified multi–week No. 1 anthem, “Drink to That All Night,” from HIGH NOON – on which he co-wrote eight of the 12 tracks. Niemann first burst onto the scene in 2010, with his critically-acclaimed major-label debut, JUDGE JERROD & THE HUNG JURY, which skyrocketed PLATINUM-certified No. 1 smash “Lover, Lover” and GOLD-certified Top 5 “What Do You Want.” His second release, FREE THE MUSIC, included Top 15 “Shinin’ On Me” and poignant ballad “Only God Could Love You More.” From Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, and CMT Award nominations, to headlining and touring with some of country’s hottest acts: Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban, Niemann continues to make his mark by creatively pushing boundaries all while offering a sincere nod to the legends before him. David Jones, a Gulf Shores resident, is continuing to make strides in the world of contemporary jazz. Incorporating modern jazz along with funk, soul and R & B, David offers an incredible journey of high energy performance and musical excellence. We would like to welcome local but also nationally recognized soul jazz trumpeter / vocalist David Jones! Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster Grab your bell bottoms, platform shoes, and best Saturday Night Fever moves. When Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster is playing, there’s no way you can resist the dance floor. From disco to 80s New Wave, these guys are energetic, fun, and professional party band. Eric Erdman is a storyteller with a life that gives him stories to write songs about. His guitar takes him around the world and he can write four songs from one break up. His lyrics are introspective and deep, often with a hook or punchline that provide the spark in a song or draw listeners in like old friends. Fly By Radio Female Fronted Rock N' Roll www.flybyradio.com Jason Justice is an Alabama man with a southern charm that is evident throughout his music." After the Navy discharged Jason, he fine tuned his writing and musical ability (guitar, harmonica, and saxophone) on the third coast. Like Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver, Jason’s wit and humor offer his unique perspectives on life’s experiences delivered through "a gritty country crunch." Jason and the band have opened up for such acts as Alan Jackson, Hank III, David Allen Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, Pat Green, Drive by Truckers and others. The beach and it’s laid back lifestyle combined with his honky tonk soul have led Jason to write original toe-tappin, beer-swilling, and thought provoking music. Johnny Hayes and the Love Seats If you watched the last season of NBC TV’s “The Voice,” you’ll recognize Johnny Hayes as the celebrated performer who wowed millions nationwide with his performance of “Statesboro Blues,” one of the Allman Brothers greatest hits and “Hard to Handle” by the Black Crowes. "We call ourselves a rock and soul band, but we play rock, soul, blues, and a little bit of country, too. I grew up on rock and roll, and listened to a lot of blues. I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older that blues and soul really speak to me. The music I write is a derivative of that.” Lisa Christian has been performing on the Gulf Coast for the last 10 years. Her smooth, bluesy sound has made her a local favorite. Lisa is also an afternoon DJ at Sunny105.7 FM, a Gulf Coast classic hits radio station. In addition to performing at night, and broadcasting during the day, Lisa does voice over work and audiobook narration. You’ll recognize Lisa as the voice of “Bagel” in the cartoon cult classic “Panic at The Bakery!”

A fortuitous, chance encounter at a songwriter showcase in Arkansas changed their destiny and direction, and this alt-country Americana duo was formed. "He writes insightful, heartfelt, and intelligent lyrics. His songs can be haunting one minute and turn rockabilly the next. He is a refreshing voice and talented writer". The Velcro Pygmies If it seems like Rock and Roll has come up lacking here in the 21st century then you need to experience The Velcro Pygmies. They manage to capture and harness that elusive essence that made the rock genre so grand, so memorable, and so much fun. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that they’re just another cut-and-paste band trying to mimic the rock gods they grew up on. They bring to the table their own unique sound and vibe, something that marks the difference between a rock band and a rock show. The Velcro Pygmies fill the room with their presence the second they take the stage and transport the audience back in time to the days of the classics. No tricks or gimmicks, just pure undiluted rock n’ roll energy that unites every race, creed, age and gender.
