About the cover artist, Loran Chavez The 47th Annual Poster winner is Loran Chavez from Fairhope. Chavez is no stranger to the Annual National Shrimp Festival; she was also the winner of the 2013 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival poster contest. Chavez began her artistic endeavors when her children were young, creating pageant and theater costumes in her home-based business. In the early 90s, she sustained serious injuries after a drunk driver hit her family car. She was forced to give up her sewing. She turned to painting to help her deal with the trauma. Soon, Chavez began taking classes and by 2002 was admitted to the Mobile Watercolor and Graphics Arts Society. In 2007 she officially became a professional artist, working fulltime at her trade. While Chavez works in multiple media her favorite is acrylics, watercolors and oils. A visit through her works is like taking a walk along a lost trail or even under the sea. Chavez’s works feature detailed works of local wildlife both on land and sea. She also features landscape pieces and has several stunning portrayals of Middle Bay Lighthouse. She is represented by Kangal Gallery and Cathedral Square Gallery in Mobile, CSide Gallery in Orange Beach and the Fairhope Connection. Her work is shown at Negrotto’s Gallery in Biloxi and marketed internationally by a firm that will reproduce images of her work as graphic designs. Chavez also stays busy working on commissions. You can find Chavez at many outdoor art shows throughout the south, or you can come see her on Saturday, Oct. 14, during the Annual National Shrimp Festival where she will sign posters and souvenirs for festival attendees.

he 47th year brings excitement, a new layout and a fresh look at the sandy white beaches that we call home. On behalf of the Committee, the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and our community. Thank You for coming to our festival.
Our new layout helps you discover things you’ve never seen before. The open feel of the town green, overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico is ready for you to throw down a blanket or unfold your chair. There are many things that have become tradition to our festival. It is still free to come and go, all day live entertainment, Arts & Crafts, Retail Merchandise, Fine Arts, Children’s Activity Village and of course, the Food! We are proud to serve domestic shrimp among the many food offerings that cater to every taste. Our food is centered in the festival for you to view and enjoy. Join us with your family and friends for our Singing for Scholarships competition and cheer on our local high school students as they compete. Join in our Sand Castle contest on the beach and show us your creativity in the beautiful white sand. Are you a runner? The city of Orange Beach is host to our Shrimp Festival 5k/10k run on Saturday, October, 13th. All proceeds from the run are donated to local charities and good causes. We will have our church service on the Wind Creek Stage on Sunday morning for all who want to come worship, followed by entertainment to wrap up the festival. Want to know how to get there? A new look for 2018
Green spaces, beach views and less traffic, oh my! The layout of this year’s Annual Shrimp Festival has changed to incorporate the open spaces of Gulf Place, the newly revitalized centerpiece at the heart of Gulf Shores. “We haven’t changed our footprint in about a decade. It was a much needed change and has created a fresh look for the festival and a new buzz,” said Spencer Cade, Chairman of the 2018 Annual National Shrimp Festival. Cade said that the entire layout of the festival has changed to incorporate more green space and make better use of the Gulf of Mexico as a beautiful, natural backdrop to the days’ events. “We tried to capture that scenery instead of blocking it with vendors
18 2018 Shrimp Festival
so as you are walking the festival and enjoying the artist and the vendors you are also enjoying being at the beach,” Cade said. Another change for 2018 — concerts on the lawn. In past years Cade said both stages were located in parking lots. This year, one of those stages will be featured on a large green space in the middle of the Gulf Place development. “It’s one of the changes I like the most,” he said. “You can come out and hang out and enjoy the music and the view.” Perhaps the biggest change is the alleviation of traffic. Cade said the committee has worked hard to ease CONTINUED ON PAGE

congestion on Highway 59 and avoid road closures. The festival has worked closely with BRATS to provide shuttle service from more stops this year and make travel to and from vehicles much easier. “Over the course of the next few
20 2018 Shrimp Festival
years we will tweak the layout and the changes as we see what works and what doesn’t,” Cade said. “Our goal is always to make the festival a good experience not just for the people who attend but also for the vendors who help us to execute a festival that has so much meaning to the community.”
Singing for Scholarships Move over shrimps, Baldwin County high school students are taking over the spotlight at the Annual National Shrimp Festival! On Saturday, Oct. 13, students representing Baldwin County high schools will perform center stage during the festival’s annual Singing for Scholarships competition. The event is co-sponsored by RE/ MAX Gulf Shores and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and chaired by Allison Hendricks, Dr. Jenny Manders, and Charley Ogletree.
Local celebrities will act as judges as students perform in a series of elimination rounds until 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are announced. Students aren’t the only winners! The competition will donate matching prizes of $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, and $250 for 3rd place to the winner’s school. Come cheer for the Baldwin County high school vocalists as they perform on the Wind Creek Casino & Hotel Main Stage on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m.

Love the Alabama Gulf Coast? Help protect it Love visiting the sugar-white sand beaches of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores? Help keep them clean for years to come! The Leave Only Footprints campaign has hauled more than 500 tons of debris and trash off the beaches in just the last four years. So, as you snack on delicious shrimp, groove to the cool music and browse the unique vendors, be sure to look for recycle bins and make sure to trash your trash. Enjoy the Alabama Gulf Coast, but please, leave only footprints. Statistics of items collected from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach beaches

What did the Sea say to the Sand? Nothing, it simply waved! Don’t worry, the special guests of this year’s Annual National Shrimp Festival Sand Sculpture Contest, staff members of Sand Castle University in Gulf Shores, will do more than wave. They’ll be on site to offer advice and guidance as teams compete for money and prizes with their on-the-spot sand creations. The Sand Sculpture Contest is divided into four categories: 5-10 age group; 11-15 age group; 16 and older age group; and the family division for all ages. Judges will score participants on originality, creativity, skill, and overall appeal. Youth first prize winners will receive $50, a trophy, and a Shrimp Festival Poster. Adult and Family first prize winners will receive $100, a trophy, and a Shrimp Festival Poster. John McCormick, Sand Sculpture Chairman, advises that only family appropriate sculptures are allowed and teams may incorporate shells CONTINUED ON PAGE

and natural elements found on the beach. Teams can bring any tools they like but cannot add any color to the sand. “We’ve just let people come and do their thing. The sculptures are always beautiful,” he said. The event is sponsored by Ike’s Beach Service and will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2018 at 11 at the public beach access point located at west end of the Annual National Shrimp Festival. Organizers are encouraging families to come out and build together. The contest becomes part of the art of the festival and passersby come to admire the creations. There is no cost to enter, so get your buckets and shovels ready, your sand canvas awaits!
Sand Castle University offers these tips for building the best sand sculpture: 1. Use tons of water. Water is glue; dry sand will crumble. 2. Use tools, not hands. You never want to touch your creation with your hands. Tools will help create crisp lines. 3. Start at the top. Most people make the moat first and then carve the castle but that will cover up what you’ve already done. Always start at the top and work your way down. 4. Start with Plan A but be ready for Plan B. If the sand doesn’t want to cooperate, you have to work with it anyway. If an arch falls or a wall crumbles you have to work around it and style something else in that spot.

A call to service in Ed Rodriguez’s honor W
hen Ed Rodriguez, President of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, died January 7 after a tragic medical emergency, the entire community lost a piece of its heart. Ed was 56 years old and served as the leader of our Chamber since 2011. He has been described as passionate, affable and the “ultimate chamber guy. He led the chamber to recognition as the 2015 Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. He routinely put the needs of others before his own. Among the many and varied programs implemented during his tenure were the creation of the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef and Restoration Foundation, the launch of the Advantage Coastal Alabama Strategic Initiative and an effort to build a local Miracle League Field. As friends and family mourned his loss they worked to find a way to fittingly honor a man who they saw as mentor, leader, colleague, supporter, champion, motivator, innovator and friend. Together, in his name, they have raised more than $15,000 to help create The Miracle League of Coastal Alabama, an organization that provides an opportunity for children and young adults with special needs and other developmental disabilities to play baseball. Plans are currently underway to
32 2018 Shrimp Festival
raise funds for the construction of a fully accessible complex here in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. The specialized baseball field will feature a cushioned, synthetic, rubberized surface that will eliminate any barriers to wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility devices. The complex will also include handicapped accessible dugouts, restrooms and drinking fountains as well as a boundless playground where children of ALL abilities can play together side by side. Ed always had a vision of carrying his community forward. May we always continue that mission in our hearts and deeds.
Sporting for great causes The Annual National Shrimp Festival provides much more than food, art and music on the Gulf Shores’ Coast. The 25th Annual Golf Tournament for Education and the 41st Annual National Shrimp Festival Run both raise money for local schools and community projects. The golf tournament was held Sept. 7 at the luscious Kiva Dunes
Golf & Beach Resort. Runners can register for the 5K and 10K races until the morning of the race on Saturday, Oct. 13. Both courses navigate through the beautiful Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Complex. The best part, with every swing of the club and every step, participants are helping to support the community.

There are
types of shrimp found in the Gulf of Mexico
PINK SHRIMP:
ROYAL RED SHRIMP:
Have a more delicate sweet flavor. Found along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Shells are light pink and have a pearl-like texture. They are the largest Gulf shrimp species and can reach 11 inches in length.
Have a unique flavor. Found in the deepest waters of the Gulf. These shrimp are easily identified by their rich, deep red color.
BROWN SHRIMP:
Mild salty taste, firm. Found along salt marshes and on mud bottoms. They feed on kelp which gives them a more robust flavor. Brown shrimp are also firmer than most and hold their shape when boiled. This is the most popular variety of Gulf shrimp.
WHITE SHRIMP:
Firm and sweet. Found in brackish bayous and estuaries with low salinity. They feed on crustaceans and seaweed which strengthens the shell and gives the shrimp a rich flavor.
Cooking shrimp All Gulf shrimp varieties look the same or similar after they are cooked, though many people say they can taste the subtle differences in the varieties. Restaurants that serve Gulf shrimp usually serve the most popular variety, brown shrimp.
Packed with vitamins Alabama’s shrimp are low in saturated fat and rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and D.

This year’s festival will include a royal visit by the Little Miss Shrimp Festival queens and their courts. The festival’s newest event was first held Sept. 16, 2017, at the Erie Meyer Civic Center. More than 70 girls in grades pre-k through 6th competed for the titles of Tiny Miss, Petite Miss, Little Miss and Miss Shrimp Festival. This year the pageant was held Sept. 22. Each age division’s queen and her three princess court will be introduced on stage on Saturday, Oct. 13 in the Children’s Activity Village. The pageant was sponsored by
The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, Annual National Shrimp Festival, and All Island Flowers. The annual Miss Sunny contest, the crowning of an adult queen at the festival, was a tradition for nearly a decade until 1979 when Hurricane Frederic came ashore. The storm hit as the festival was preparing to open and caused the cancelation of many activities, including the pageant. Little Miss Shrimp Festival is a revival of that tradition and a look toward the future. Proceeds from the event are donated to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Elementary Schools.
The inaugural Little Miss Shrimp Festival courts were:

JOE DIFFIE With the release of Jason Aldean’s hit “1994” earlier this year that name-checked many of Joe Diffie’s twelve Number One hits, the legendary singer found himself squarely back in the hearts and minds of country fans. The multi-platinum-selling artist who dominated the charts during a hot streak in the ‘90’s may have been absent from the radio charts for the past few years, but Joe-Joe-Joe Diffie has never slowed down — writing, touring and recording a myriad of projects including his critically acclaimed 2010 bluegrass album “Homecoming,” and his recent “Roots And Boots” acoustic tour and collaborative CD “All In The Same Boat,” with fellow hitmakers Sammy Kershaw and Aaron Tippin. And now he’s back at it again, riding shotgun with hick-hop sensations the Jawga Boyz on a brand new single, “Girl Ridin’ Shotgun,” which was recently released to country radio. The single, co-written by Diffie, Phil O’Donnell and Derek Thrasher of The Jawga Boyz is a fun, up-tempo romp perfect for summertime cruising and returns Joe to the country charts where he undoubtedly belongs. The performance features D. Thrash (Derek Thrasher) on the verses as Diffie’s signature vocals soar on the choruses and verses. The tune was written in part as an answer to Jason Aldean’s tribute to Joe, (penned by Thomas Rhett, Luke Laird and Barry Dean) and name-checks Aldean in a nod to the monster hit that helped introduce Joe to a whole new generation of fans two decades later. With chart-toppers like “Pickup Man,” “Third Rock From the Sun,” and “John Deere Green,” and 13 albums and over 20 Top 10 singles to his credit, Joe has little to prove at this point in his career, yet he still has a fire in his belly to make good country music. A renowned songwriter in his own right who recently turned his focus back to writing after years on the road, Joe has hits for artists like Tim McGraw, Conway Twitty, and Jo Dee Messina to his credit, and has cuts on upcoming projects for “X Factor” winner Tate Stevens, Dylan Scott, and Tyler Farr among others. He is also hard at work on an album of brand new material, due out later this year on Bigger Picture Records. The collaboration with the Jawga Boyz and the attention from the Aldean hit is opening all sorts of new doors for Joe at this point in his career, and he’s excited at the prospect of working with some of music’s hot new hitmakers. “We had a good time writing and recording my new song “Girl Ridin’ Shotgun,’ and making a video for it,” says Joe. “ I’ve been writing with a lot of new artists and I never thought that collaboration with one of them would lead to this, but I’m really glad that it has. It’s a different sound for me and I’m having so much fun with it all. I can’t wait to see what the future brings!”

No stranger to the spotlight, Adam Holt has toured the Southeast from Houston to Tallahassee to Chattanooga, playing from music festivals to dive bars, and sharing the stage with such southern rock icons as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Drivin’ n Cryin’, as well as blues legends Bob Margolin, Willie Big Eyes Smith, and Hubert Sumlin (from Muddy Waters’ and Howlin’ Wolf’s bands, respectively). From time to time, you may find the multi-instrumentalist lending his piano chops in either an uptempo dueling piano bar or a more intimate lounge venue, pouring his heart out to fans of Lionel Richie, Chicago, and Elton John.
With over 100 live dates each year, Bag Of Donuts have become headliners at festivals and clubs from Texas to Florida including an annual slot at the world famous French Quarter Festival which surpassed 700,000 attendees in 2017. In an effort to continue their evolution and sense of reinvention, the band added a two piece horn section in the spring of 2017. In addition, there is always a salute to their roots which is at the heart of BOD’s charm. To quote the band: “It‘s like Mardi Gras all year long.”

He has also worked the stage with such musical heavyweights as Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, and Chris Cagle. It’s no one, it just rhymes with Sugarcane, which this Alabama Gulf Coast based husband and wife duo made up after eating bags of it cut by Savana’s grandfather in Loxley, Alabama. It’s only a name but there is so much more to this extraordinary couple. Their acoustic folk-rock sound is as mesmorizing as their sibling like harmonies and Sonny & Cher type personalities. They met in Nashville where Savana was a studio head and Anthony was on and off the road with rock and roll’s most revered, including Neil Young and Steve Winwood. Together they have created this larger than life all American brand they call Sugarcane Jane. With guitar, kickdrum, harmonica, bass, and two vocals, it’s an impressive amount of sound coming from just two people. If you’ve never seen them perform before, do yourself a favor. If it seems like Rock and Roll has come up lacking here in the 21st century then you need to experience The Velcro Pygmies. They manage to capture and harness that elusive essence that made the rock genre so grand, so memorable, and so much fun. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that they’re just another cut-and-paste band trying to mimic the rock gods they grew up on. They bring to the table their own unique sound and vibe, something that marks the difference between a rock band and a rock show. The Velcro Pygmies fill the room with their presence the second they take the stage and transport the audience back in time to the days of the classics. No tricks or gimmicks, just pure undiluted rock n’ roll energy that unites every race, creed, age and gender. The band The Wildflowers are America’s #1 tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. One of these fellow musicians just happened to be Tom Petty’s doppelganger, guitarist and lead vocalist Jonathan Guthrie. Guthrie was an avid fan and had always fantasized about being a Heartbreaker. As two seasoned musicians and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fans, there was really only one thing for them to do – form a tribute band. Drummer Steve Lucas, formerly of Feverdog and a bandmate of Stone’s local band, Theatrix, quickly signed on. Lucas brought with him his M-80s band mate Glenn Freeman. Freeman, who boasts of seeing multiple Petty concerts in the 80s, brought an instrumental cornucopia to the group with keyboards, harmonica, guitar and backing vocals. Lead guitarist Curt Granger rounded out the lineup. With 30+ years experience in Birmingham’s local music scene, Granger has played in such circuit bands as Pyrate, Scream Sophie and his own solo project as well as creating a line of world-renowned boutique guitar amplifiers.
