ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, Jessica Jones apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events that will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells — go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing...nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspired at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

n Enjoy golf scramble, 5K, 1-mile fun run, fishing tournaments, concerts By Theresa Corbin Contributing writer When the middle of August rolls around and school is soon to start, most folks roll up the beach blankets and put away the sunscreen. But just when it looks like summer fun is waning — that's when football fans will be gathering for the biggest summer party of them all. SEC BeachFest is set to roll into Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Aug. 15 and keep the party going all weekend long. Join the SEC for a full weekend of fun at the beach as it kicks off the 2013 fall football season from Aug. 15 through 18. Where else will you be able to compete in a Golf Scramble or a 5K; listen, sing along and dance the night away at live concerts; and meet legendary SEC coaches and players — all in one weekend? According to the official website of the SEC BeachFest, secbeachfest.com, the Golf Scramble is set to tee off the funfilled weekend Thursday, Aug. 15. “Talk about bragging rights,” the site says. “You could swing your way to a serious claim to fame by winning the SEC BeachFest Golf Scramble. And even if your foursome doesn’t win, you’ll still get to enjoy three rounds of amazing golf, four free tickets to the SEC BeachFest FanZone, two days of complimentary buffet breakfast and lunch, a gift bag and chance to meet SEC coaching legends.” If you're rusty with your backswing, don't worry. The Golf Scramble has scheduled an entire day for warm up before the shotgun start at Craft Farms, Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club and Gulf Shores Golf Club Aug. 16 at 8:30 a.m. Be sure to get all the practice you can, because according to the website, the winning team will receive a trip for eight to the SEC Football Championship in Atlanta. The package includes VIP Tickets to the game, hotel accommodations for two nights, passes to the SEC 'Behind the Scenes' tour, tickets to the Regions Bank Coaches Luncheon and the AT&T Legends Dinner as well as access to pre-game hospitality. Next in the SEC BeachFest line-up of athletic endeavors is the 5K and 1-mile fun run. “Runners …. on your marks, get set, go! Grab your running shoes and get ready to represent your team at the SEC Beach-

Will you sport your team colors as you cross the finish line? touts the SEC BeachFest’s official website. “The 5K and Fun Run will be a blast for all ages.” Be sure to arrive bright and early on Saturday, Aug. 17 for an 8 a.m. start time for the 5K and 9 a.m. start time for
Two fans pose in football uniforms at the Regions tent. the 1-mile Fun Run. Sign up for the 5K or the 1-mile run at imathlete.com/events/secbeachfest2013. The Golf Scramble, the 5K and the Fun Run are only a few of the many activities at the SEC BeachFest. This year's BeachFest is offering something new to the team of exciting events. “New for 2013, have the chance to catch the fish of a lifetime and meet legendary SEC coaches and players in the 1st Annual SEC BeachFest Fishing Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 17th at Zeke’s Landing. Enjoy a half day charter trip with your friends, family, or co-workers, followed by free food, drinks and prizes as you see how your catch stacks up against legendary SEC coaches and players at the Weigh-In Party, presented by Wolf Bay Lodge,” according to secbeachfest.com. There will also be a chance for the younger crowd to weigh in with their catches. The Kid’s Pier Fishing Tournament will be in Gulf Shores State Park on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. The tournament gives kids a chance to fish for prizes. If you are not in the competitive mood, you can always swing by the BeachFest concerts on Friday and Saturday night. Get a Friday night front row seat to sing along with March Broussard, “an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms,” according to the web site. Or unwind with Saturday night's artist, Rodney Atkins, who “has an impressive track record with hitting on sentiments that strike a chord with the country listener … with irresistibly catchy chorus and easygoing, windows down, breezy summer vibe.” And perhaps the best part of the SEC BeachFest will be the chance to meet legendary coaches and players on Aug. 17 and 18. You will have the chance to rub elbows with and get autographs from SEC hall of famers like Billy Brewer, Vince Dooley, Houston Nutt, Jerry Stovall, Gene Stallings, Chris Doering, Roger Schultz, Bucky Richardson and many more. All these events will be open to fun seekers August 15-18 at the SEC BeachFest. So come out to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to kick off the 2013 football season in style. For more detail on the event, visit the website secbeachfest.com.

Get the best of both worlds: Enjoy sunset on the water and fine dining at Voyagers
By Lindsay Mott Contributing writer
R
esidents of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores enjoy a natural paradise where they can live, work and play. When guests visit, they want to see the beach and the ocean and enjoy all of the area’s amenities. And, for those who may have never been on the water — resident or not — Perdido Beach Resort is offering a special opportunity, Dine and Sail. “A lot of people have never seen the sunset on the water,” said Tracy Adams, director of sales and marketing for Perdido Beach Resort. “It’s a whole different perspective.” Starting in June, the Perdido Beach Resort Dine and Sail events began for the second, consecutive
Perdido Beach Resort
year. On Thursday nights, participants set out from the resort on the Wild Hearts, a 53-foot ocean catamaran, and enjoy an hour-and-ahalf cruise, ending with a perfect view of the sunset on the water. After the cruise, guests have a reservation at the resort’s fine dining, award-winning Voyagers restaurant. Executive Chef John Hamme works up a Mediterranean style cuisine at the restaurant with a tapas-style arrangement for Dine and Sail guests. The restaurant specializes in local seafood seasoned with citrus and spice, along with farm-fresh local produce and aged steaks with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. There is also a wine sampling for Dine and Sail guests. Dine and Sail offers this
type of event at a tremendous value, according to Adams. In July, cruises left out from Perdido Beach at 6 p.m., but have moved up to 5:45 in August to accommodate the sunset time. Those attending in August can expect to return for dinner around 8 p.m. The summer cruises run until Aug. 29. Dine and Sail cruises begin Sept. 5 and run through Oct. 24. Dine and Sail cruises are $49 per person and reservations are required. To make Dine and Sail reservations, call concierge services at 251-981-9811, extension 103. Parking is available for Dine and Sail; for room reservations contact the reservations department at 251-981-9811 and mention promo sail13.

Festival at Perdido Key offers a variety of activities, Aug. 31 n Kayak races, barbecue, live blues, fireworks and a fly board demo By Caron Sjoberg Kayak races, barbecue cook-offs, live blues music, fireworks and extreme water sports will be some of the highlights of the festival held in Perdido Key Aug. 31. The first Kayak, Barbeque and Blues Festival will offer 2-mile and 4-mile kayak races, with cash prizes for winners of the Battle of the Paddle on Perdido Key. Live music includes a performance by the Blues Brothers Soul Band, voted the most authentic replica of the “Blues Brothers” band of John Belushi/Dan Ackroyd fame. The barbecue cook-off will be a culinary showdown, with top chefs collecting prizes, too. Other attractions include a fly board demonstration of a performer completing a night flight in a lighted suit. Fly board, the cutting edge of extreme water sports, works on a water propulsion system, which allows the rider to fly in the
air and to go underwater. The demonstration will be done by Powerup Watersports of Destin. (Here’s an example of what they do: youtube.com/watch?v=09GpFcU5Ss.k) The event starts with kayak races at 9 a.m. Aug. 31 and goes until 8:30 p.m., when a Pyrotechnico fireworks display will set off close to 400 shells. The festival is based at Galvez Landing off Innerarity Point Road. The cook-off will be held at Hub Stacey’s at the Point, 5851 Galvez Road, overlooking Galvez Landing. The Blues Brothers Soul Band, a rhythm and blues tribute band, will bring the crowd to its feet with renditions of music by the Temptations, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and more. In addition, two popular local blues groups will perform: The Lucky Doggs and Big Muddy. Larry T. Wilson and Big Muddy (myspace.com/larrytwilson) start the music at 11 a.m. and perform until 2 p.m., followed by Johnny Barbato and the Lucky Doggs (johnnybarbato.com) from 2:30 until 5 p.m. Blues Brothers Soul Band (bluesbrotherssoulband.com) will keep the fans dancing until the fireworks get underway at 8:30 p.m. Learn more at visitperdido.com.

Bill and his wife smile from their boat during the Thunder on the Gulf. They had one of the turn boats in the race. ness, and does whatever is necessary to maintain the boats in a safe and seaworthy condition. As the business built up, he realized he needed to know more about the dolphins, so he contacted the Dolphin Research Center (DRC) in the Florida Keys, and asked if he could come down and volunteer. It turned into a yearly trip. He took classes from the Research Center while helping build piers. After Hurricane Wilma, Bill brought his crew to the Research Center and rebuilt the piers damaged by the hurricane. Because of what Bill learned at the DRC, he brought his knowledge back to Alabama and Bill’s dolphin cruises moved toward education as well as entertainment. If people wanted to talk about the physiology and anatomy of a dolphin, Bill could do that. He said some groups did, and some just wanted to be entertained, and that was OK, too. Bill calls his company Cetacean Cruises (cetacean is the biological order of whales, dolphins and porpoises.) Because of Bill’s training, he told me he was considered the only boat that was “Dolphin Smart.” It involved going slow near the dolphins, and doing other things that made it safe for the dolphins. During the oil spill, Bill was asked by NOAA to be the only
dolphin health assessment boat. Bill’s boat carried NOAA personnel, scientists, veterinarians and other dolphin specialists. Bill bought a hull of a boat, tore it apart, hired a ship welder full time for a couple of months and worked on the boat night and day. He lengthened the hull, mounted outboards and eventually built himself a new dolphin cruise boat. Bill did the design work working with the USCG and a marine architect named Andrew Mundt; they rebuilt it for shallow water use to carry 49 passengers. It took more than two years and finally was approved a couple months ago. Five years ago, a lady named Cheryl came on a dolphin cruise. She was visiting from Michigan. They wrote, kept in touch and a year later, they married on Bird Island. As a sales representative and as a professional water-skier, Bill has traveled all over, but there was no hesitation in his saying “I love it here! The way people act; the ‘small town, big beach’ feeling is contagious. It’s that down-home country feel to a beach town. I love the lack of pretentiousness. My future plans are to stay ON THE ISLAND,” and Bill, we’re fortunate to have you here with us. Thank you for what you add TO THE ISLAND, and for sharing your remarkable life with us.

Life’s good and so is the fishin’
Moms and dads are out buying school supplies, and the beach crowd is getting smaller each day. Looks like school will be staring soon, which means August is here and the summer is coming to an end. But it’s still hot as a fire cracker in south Alabama. High heat when trout fishing means you need to fish deeper than last month, and you need to go deep sooner in the day. In August, I’ll go directly to the inshore gas rigs and use a slip cork or a tight line with a crocker or a live pogie as bait. I look for 3- to 4-inch baits, but will go bigger before smaller. Fish a little slower this time of the year — almost like you would do in the rivers during winter months. Fish can be a little slow in hot months, so you need to adjust your method of fishing. If it’s possible, try a night trip around the lights on the gas rigs as well. You don’t need sun block at night and you don’t feel worn out as quickly. There’s less people on the water as well. Just have a good light on board and go a little slower. With all the rain we’ve got going, if you want to fish the inshore reefs or piers and such, I’d try the lower end of Mobile Bay. The rain (fresh water) will move the specks south so they can stay in salty water. If you wish to stay on the north end of the Bay, I’d fish for red fish first. They seem to handle more fresh water than specks. If you want specks on the north end, you may try to stay away from the strong currents and fish the slow moving areas. They may have a lower amount of fresh water present. Flounder will also hang around brackish water. Smaller baits (bull minnows) may work well for you around rig legs, oyster bars, pier pilings and anything else that will provide an ambush site for flounder. This time of the year, you may run across huge schools
GulfVisitorGuide.com
of large red fish near the north end of Mobile Bay. They will be following schools of pogies and other bait fish. Mixed in with these red fish will be some jacks and maybe even a few tarpon. Smallish mullet will also attract bigger fish in the Bay, including shark. I have boated a six-foot shark near Fish River Reef while trout fishing. I got lucky with a crocker as bait. I set the hook after seeing the fin run at my cork and hooked the shark in the skin near the mouth using 15-pound mono. My drag saved the day for me. I was able to get the animal to the boat. I lip galfed him and removed the hook from the skin, and the shark was released. I have no idea how the 15-pound test line survived the fight, but am aware of the amount of luck involved with this animal. White trout are still in the bay and near shore; they’re off shore as well. The Sand Island Light House will hold white trout and red fish. Plus, we have lots of smaller shark there, too. Most of them are in the 2- to 4-foot range with a few eye openers. You may even find a few huge black drum around the light house. If the wind is still blowing hard, I’d try the canal in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The rocks and trees hold flounder, red fish and black drum in the deeper holes created by the tug boat props tied to barges as they move and control their barges. All in all, August is an above-average month on Mobile Bay. It’s just hot as the dickens and can have some problem days with high winds, dark clouds and bright flashes in the sky. Remember, if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. That’s a rough way to end a day. Call me if I can help, 251-550-5418 — have a great day on the water. Know the rules and always stay safe.

Wildlife tourism essential for Gulf states Submitted by Alabama Department of Tourism According to a report released by Datu Research, an economic research firm, wildlife tourism for states along the Gulf of Mexico and generates more than $19 billion annually, with more than 2.6 million jobs. The work contained in this research report was funded by the Environmental Defense Fund and received support from Walton Family Foundation. The wildlife tourism industry is extensively significant to the economy of the region. It heavily depends on the endangered ecosystem of the Gulf Coast in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. The entire wildlife industry, covered by this report, entails hunting, recreational fishing and wildlife watching. In addition to the total annual spending of about $19 billion, the report reveals that the industry attracts 20 million people, generating $5.3 billion through tax revenues and tourism jobs. The largest share of spending is about $8 billion and is attributed by recreational fishing, whereas the wildlife watching contributes to about $6.5 billion.

On the other hand, hunting generates more than $5 billion. The wildlife tourism segment mainly flourishes in Florida, with spending at more than $8 billion, followed by Texas, which has more than $5 billion. Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana also regard wildlife tourism highly important — segment yields $2 billion for each of the states. The total number of visitors attracted by wildlife watching in the Gulf Coast is more than 11.6 bil-
lion. This is more than any other wildlife activity, and is closely followed by recreational fishing and even hunting. Texas and Florida attract more than 7 million wildlife visitors. The number of visitors for states like Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama are about 2 million for each. Also highlighted by the report is that the tourism industry creates more than 489,256 jobs across the 53 counties, from Texas to Florida. Half of these jobs are based in Florida, where-
as 26,294 jobs are created by Mississippi tourism, thus covering about three counties. The total tax revenue is about $5.3 billion. Out of it, $2.5 billion is both local and state annual revenue. Florida leads the revenue with more than $1 billion, followed by Mississippi and its counties with more than $209 million. Glass-blower shares his 'toys' at The Hot Shop By Belinda Butler Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach Adam Burges, a BFA graduate of the University of South Alabama, is the resident glass artist at The Hot Shop at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach — Alabama’s only public access hot-glass studio. At The Hot Shop, anyone can “play with the toys” under the supervision of Burges, a master glass-blower in the “Make Your Own Glass” program. Burges is driven to produce, and to teach. “I couldn’t be happier right now, working with an amazing group of people — they’re doing something special.
