hen your vacation is over, there’s always the bittersweet reality of going back to your everyday routine. Why not bring a part of the beach home with you? Many shops and local sellers at the beach offer a variety of items that will remind you of your time here on the shores. Take your family meals back to beach time with beach themed tableware from many shops from the beach. Items such as painted wineglasses, seashell themed silverware and salt and pepper shakers can transform your kitchen and dining room into the beach havens that you miss so much.

“Coral pieces are great for a centerpiece on your dining room table,” said Susan from Tallulah’s in Orange Beach. There are a few color choices to set in your kitchen and dining room that tend to portray the beach setting. “Mostly the corals, aquas and turquoises are the most popular colors while creating a beach theme,” said Susan.

“Especially in the dining room.”

If you want to go the extra step, adding a white table cloth, light table runner or brightly colored napkins can also brighten your table.

Capt. Shirley’s Ship sinks in Orange Beach

F

or years, the Capt. Shirley Brown was a fixture in the waters around Pensacola.

Now it’s a fixture off of Orange Beach sitting in 85 feet of water about 14 miles off the coast, courtesy of the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef and Restoration Foundation.

“We actually toured it and walked through it a little over a year ago,” said Lila Harris, a foundation board member. “It’s really interesting, kind of like a barge, but it had rooms. You could stay there and there was a beautiful lounge.”

This is the second boat sunk with money raised by the foundation and Harris said the group has designs on adding more the reef system off of Alabama. The first deployment was the LuLu, sent to the bottom on Memorial Day weekend of 2013.

Capt. Shirley Brown was sent to the bottom on June 3.

Its namesake was a marina owner in Pensacola for many years and that business carries on with surviving family members. Brown died in 2005.

“It’s our second wreck and our third project with the

foundation,” Harris said. “We’re looking at getting some more in the next six to 12 months. We’re actively trying to add to the artificial reef system.

“There’s several things up in the air. We’ve had some ships with some interesting histories come to us but we haven’t even narrowed it down yet. We’ve got several that we are looking at.”

Well known too many in the Pensacola area as the “Tenneco Boat” or the “Concrete Ship,” this unique vessel that was about 125 feet long and docked at Brown’s Marina after he acquired it in the 1980s.

Capt. Brown was proud of the ship he used to bring together people from many walks of life from the community with his “tugboat” breakfasts once or twice a month. Many business and political leaders were brought together for the “chow and chat” experience on the Capt. Shirley Brown.

It was built in 1942 for the Tenneco Co. and used concrete because there was a shortage of steel during World War II. It had luxurious accommodations below deck to fete VIP visitors and customers of the company.

It had to be modified somewhat before it could be deployed, Harris said.

“The top portion of it was taken off,” Harris said. “The only way we could deploy it was to take off the roof and the lounge, so basically it’s the bottom part of it that’s out there now.”

The effort to get the ship on the bottom of the Gulf was a circuitous one, first being targeted by Okaloosa County’s artificial reef program, according to an article by the PensacolaNews Journal in April of 2014.

When that fell through, Harris said the foundation ended up getting the ship.

“We first looked at it last spring of 2014,” Harris said. “We ended up getting it so we went ahead and got it launched. We acquired the Capt. Shirley Brown and the family donated it.

They wanted to stay true to the name.”

This new deployment adds a new wrinkle to the expansive reef system off of Alabama’s coast.

“It is going to be a great site for wreck divers,” Harris said. “A wreck diver is different from a regular open water advanced diver. You have to have a specific wreck certification so it will be a great dive for people who are wreck certified.

“It has different holes you can go into that are kind of interesting. The top deck is at about 68 feet and it lies in about 85 feet of water.”

Harris, a certified dive trainer for all levels of scuba, says extra precautions need to be learned before getting wreck certified.

“You are taught how to look out for barriers, fishing lines, anything that would impede you and keep you from safely being able to get in and out,” she said. “Your real focus of being a wreck certified diver is you are really good with neutral buoyancy and not kicking up any silt. You could kick up some silt, get lost and really be in trouble.”

Already the reef, after just two months in the water, is attracting marine life.

“There’s tons of fish on it already,” she said. “Triggerfish, amberjack, little bait fish. It’s swarming with fish. The family has been honored and they know something he treasured is below the surface and it’s there safely.

“It’s cool for us divers to see new things and see that it grows and see the sea life all over it.”

The Wharf hosts 2nd Annual food and wine tasting

T

he second annual Uncorked Wine and Culinary Event at The Wharf in Orange Beach is a three-day event that combines tastings of delicious food and tantalizing wines, a pinch of southern flare and a dash of Gulf Coast hospitality.

This event will raise funds for Make-A-Wish Alabama, an organization devoted to granting wishes to Alabama children with lifethreatening medical conditions.

“The funds that are raised during the event stay in the area to help grant a wish for local children,” said Sheena Mizell, marketing coordinator for The Wharf. “Last year we raised $6,785.

This year we hope to greatly increase that number by having impressive auction items and the support of our sponsors and guests.”

With more than 150 wine labels on hand, guests will have the opportunity to sample and purchase

fine wines from esteemed vineyards ranging from local to domestic and imported. If you are a connoisseur, a collector, or just interested in finding a new favorite, there’s a large selection at The Wharf Uncorked.

The event has recruited some of the top chefs on the Gulf Coast to put their skills on display. Enjoy intimate cooking demos, food tasting, cookbook signings and cooking competitions with veteran culinary judges from across the Gulf Coast.

This years event is even bigger and better than last year’s.

“This year’s event has expanded in many ways,” Mizell said. “Smaller events have been added to the threeday schedule to include The Art of Food cooking demo and live painting event, a champagne brunch, a luxury yacht walk, and a bourbon event that will be announced soon. It will also include an expanded Kick Off event on Thursday, the Wine Dinners on

Bell

I

f you’ve been on the Island long, you’ve probably seen her on stage with her Breedlove guitar. Brittany Bell, 26, brings the blues and her southern soul to venues across the beach, and she isn’t one to disappoint.

Bell grew up with music. She was born with a passion for singing and writing, and she added to her talent by learning guitar at age 12.

“The first song I learned was a Nirvana song, “Team Spirit,” Bell said. “That was one of the main reasons I learned guitar.

I just thought that song was so good.”

Though Bell began playing guitar to garage band and grunge music, she also played music for her church. Bell was her church’s music leader, which gave her the confidence to get her music heard outside of church, also.

Bell moved to The Island from Birmingham in 2007 and landed her first solo gig at Our Cigar Bar at The Wharf in Orange Beach. She was 18 years old when her music career began and she started to book more shows in the area.

Since then, Bell has regular gigs at Ginny Lane’s, Island Times Daiquiri Bar, Pleasure Island Tiki Bar and a weekly gig at Cosmo’s in Orange Beach.

Other than her love for performing, Bell had also exercised her songwriting abilities from a young age. Bell began songwriting at age 13.

“I’ve always loved writing music, even at an early age before I knew how to play an instrument,” Bell said. “Now that I look

back and listen to them, they were so cheesy.”

Bell has written over 30 songs which Bell describes as a mix between her “religious side and secular side,” and she still has a few songwriting goals that she hopes to achieve in the near future.

“I really want to write something for my daughter,” Bell said. “But I feel like it may be more of a lullaby. I want to write a love song, because I tend to write more angry girl songs.”

“I think mine shows dark and good, how good always overcomes dark – and I always write like that.”

She has been recorded by many fellow musicians including local podcast, Live at Dave’s. She has played music with many other locals including Mel Knapp, Melissa Joiner, Jackie Clowe, Steve Wilkerson, the Vanetten Brothers and Adam Cooper who is a saxophone player she began her music career with, Brittany will be competing in the Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout which will be held every Monday in September 14 through October 26 at The Hot Spot at The Wharf.

eptember marks one year that I have had the privilege of sharing ideas and personal experiences about fishing.

When I take people out on my boat I always tell them, “If we have a great time and get back safe, catching fish is always a bonus.”

With that in mind, what did you catch September a year ago, or even five years ago? Where did you catch them? What was the weather or tides? What bait did you use?

All good questions that can only be answered if you kept good records of your fishing trips or have a good buddy with an awesome memory. In reviewing over my past few years of September fishing, white trout and ground mullet were the hot items along with bull reds on Dixey Bar. White trout, if you can find them, are usually easy to catch using shrimp, cut bait or Gulp-scented baits. Several years ago we found a deep hole near Katrina Cut that held so many white trout, we caught them on a jig head with no bait.

White trout make excellent table fare when eaten fresh.

They don’t freeze quite as well as some other fish due to their soft meat, but they make quite a nice addition to seafood gumbo.

Ground mullet, which seem to be the same fish as whiting which are caught in the surf are easy to catch on shrimp or cut bait and also are delicious to eat. Both species are usually caught around Mobile Bay gas rigs or Sand Island Lighthouse.

Bull reds always seem to be around Dixey Bar, which is the sand bar located behind Fort. Morgan, running South past the lighthouse and East of the ship channel. Dixey Bar is famous for holding bull reds, jack crevalle (which are often mistaken for yellow fin tuna by rookie fisherman), and an abundance of Atlantic sharpnose sharks.

If you hear me say, “I’m going to the Bar and tying one on,” I mean tying on a pogie for a big redfish not traveling to the nearest pub. My favorite bait is live pogies or croaker, hooked in the lips with a circle hook and about a two-ounce sinker up about two-feet from the bait.

I like to drift on an outgoing tide, about 1.5 mph or more, which usually occurs a couple of hours after high tide. I use my Navonics app on the IPhone to obtain tidal information and current speed. Other baits include Mann Stretch 25 or 30, or No. 1 or No. 2 planers with some type artificial bait.

I recently took out a couple of friends wanting to free dive.

The water around all the near shore rigs was too dirty to see anything so we traveled farther out in search of better visibility.

This spot looks good. I tied up to the rig and off he goes, long

fins, mask and a spear gun. He soon surfaces with a huge barracuda. We traveled to another rig and another Barracuda and small sheepshead. The kings were also hitting our pogies so we landed a few for the grill. Another great day on the water.

A• Asfew water safety tips: I have warned before, be aware of someone anchoring to fish, while another 20 boats are drifting with the current. On several occasions I have nearly hit another boat or had my line tangle with their anchor rope while fighting a fish.

• Remember, the slot for keeping redfish is three per person, 1626 inches, and one per person for fish over 26 inches. However, I encourage everyone to take a photo and release the big ones for another day since they are our breeding stock for future generations. Always make sure to take extra effort insuring the fish is revived when released.

• Weather is always a determining factor when leaving the safety of the dock. Check the radar before leaving, but more importantly, recheck the radar occasionally while fishing. Storms can quickly sneak in while we are busy fishing. It’s a good idea to monitor channel 16 for any Coast Guard marine warnings or if you’re monitoring another channel with other boaters, look out for each other. If the temperature suddenly drops, get ready for sudden rough seas and high wind. Safety is paramount. No fish is worth risking your life.

Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout Committee

n Monday nights in September and October, songwriters from all over will bring their best original songs to the stage at The Hot Spot for the Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout.

Sandy Roots Music Productions will be producing the 2nd Annual Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout. The competition was held at The Flora-Bama last year and was a successful event. Nick Biebricher, owner of Sandy Roots, stated that he is very excited about the events newfound partnership with Bobby Graves, owner of the Hot Spot Music & Grub.

“Bobby is a great guy and he has been generous enough to put up the entire cash prize package to this years winners and we are blessed to be able to use his venue for our event,” Biebricher said. The Shootout is slated to start on September 14 and will continue every Monday night for six weeks until the finale on October 26. Local musician, Destiny Brown, has been selected to host the 2015 Songwriter Shootout.

THE COMPETITION 10 songwriting contestants will take the stage at The Hot Spot each Monday night. A winner will be chosen each night after all of the contestants have performed. There are three ways to advance to the finals in this year’s competition; crowd vote, artist vote and the mystery judges vote.

One of the shootout contestants will perform a set from 12-2 a.m. each night at Our Cigar Bar at The Wharf after the competition.

THE CELEBRITY SONGWRITER ROUND AND COMPETITION FINALE Hit Songwriters Brett Jones, Travis Meadows and Lynn Langham will judge

the 2015 Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout finale. Brett Jones is responsible for seven No.1 billboard country chart songs such as ”Crazytown,” by Jason Aldean, “That’s How Country Boys Roll,” by Billy Currington , “ If Heaven Wasn’t so Far Away,” by Justin Moore and many more. He has over 1,400 published songs and over 150 songs have been featured on major label recordings. Travis Meadows is the current go-to-songwriter for many top country artists. His recent hits include “What We Ain’t Got,”’ by Jake Owens, and “The Riser,” by Dierks Bentley (the title track from the album) along with cuts by Eric Church (“Dark Side.” on The Outsiders album), Ronnie Dunn, Frankie Ballard. Lee Ann Womack, Blackberry Smoke, etc etc.

Travis Meadows is also an amazing artist and his critically acclaimed album “Killin’ Uncle Buzzy,” is considered by his country music peers to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

Musical luminaries from every style, notably by Wynonna, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Trisha Yearwood, Elizabeth Cook, and Carolyn Hester, have recorded Lynn Langham’s songs. Her song, “Old Yellow Moon”, (written with Hank DeVito) was the title cut of Harris and Crowell’s Grammy winning duet album in 2014. It was also named Album of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Awards. Lynn has shared the stage with legends like John Prine, Asleep At The Wheel, Larry Gatlin, Leon Redbone and Cheech and Chong.

The Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout will host a special “Celebrity Songwriter Round “ with these hit writers’ on Oct 25th at the Hot Spot Music & Grub. Tickets are on sale now and admission price will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

‘Who’s on the Island?’

O

klahoma is OK, but Tony Riviera soon learned that there’s no place like Sweet Home Alabama. Riviera filled in some blanks on where he’d been, and what brought him back to Gulf Shores. Tony can be best described as a straight-forward guy who’s a bundle of non-stop energy. He came to Gulf Shores in 1991 and was City Manager until 2004.

Tony Riveria was born in Cuba and lived there till his was 9 years old. His dad was Cuban, but his mom was from Oklahoma.

His dad worked for Phillips Petroleum and while working in Oklahoma, he met Tony’s mom. Until 18 years old, Tony didn’t realize he needed to get his naturalization papers. He spoke mostly Spanish ,so had some hard learning to do. In Oklahoma, he started school in the seventh grade. He played soccer in Cuba so was surprised that with football, he could tackle the opposition as well as use your hands in the game. His dad, after Phillips Petroleum changed hands, he went to work for the “Git and Go” stores and traveled about in charge of inventory for the stores. Tony went to Oklahoma State University, and graduated with an electrical engineering degree. After graduating ,he learned that to work as an electrical engineer, you had to live in Oklahoma City and work for Western Electric. Instead he went to Tulsa and got a job doing building wiring. He became a building official.

Before coming to the beach for the first time, Riviera was City Manager of Ada, Okla. At the time, his wife worked for a company that had a business conference at the Grand Hotel in Fairhope.

Tony decided to tag along as a spouse, and do some fishing while she was attending meetings.

Riveria suggested they take a ride and see what was in the area and they ended up in Gulf Shores, and loved it. It was then and there that they decided that if a city management job opened in Gulf Shores, that they’d move down.

Their son had just graduated from high school and if they were going to move, this would be an ideal time. Tony had experience in city management and finance in Ada, Simineaux, and Del City, Oklahoma. He had been a city clerk, treasurer, manager, etc. and was comfortable in all phases of city government His strong point was in finance. When he got back to Ada that next Monday morning, he picked up his “City Manager” trade magazine, and opened it to job opportunities. On the first line, the first job, advertised was for a City Manager in Gulf Shores Alabama. He couldn’t believe it.

He sent a resume’, and was asked to come down for an interview.

There were more than 250 applications, but he was hired. The city needed a person with finance background, and Tony was perfect.

At that time the city had expansion problems. It was a time of growth. From 1992 to 2002, the city grew at 16 percent per year. The budget exploded and the work of keeping up with the growth, and the cost of growth, was extremely stressful. They built the Bodenhamer Center (painted the trim Oklahoma Sooner red), worked at developing the north shore, and started promoting expanding growth along the beaches. Tony did this for 14 years.

One day, David Bodenhamer, the mayor and close friend, told Tony that he had decided to call it quits. After much thought and a discussion with Tony’s wife, Tony decided that this was a good time to make a change.

He describes being a part of Gulf Shores as a wonderful time in his life, but full of stress, and he was just wore out. Tony took his

wife and they hit the road. They decided to drive to California via the I-10 corridor on the Southern route. While passing through New Mexico, he got a call from a business associate offering him an 18-month contract as City Administrator for the city of Alabaster (the fastest growing city in the fastest growing county at that time). He was also told that the Mayor was having surgery so Tony had to come back immediately and assume the duties of that office till the Mayor was back to work. In the meantime, both of his children worked and lived in Alabama. Getting back and close to the children was the lure to come back to Alabama.

By the end of 16 months, Tony had completed their personal manual, developed a five year capital plan, planning books, etc.

He says he’s a work-a-holic.

He then had a call to come to Alexandria City to help get them out of their financial mess. He was given a six-months contract to straighten up their mess. After a couple months there, he was notified his dad, and father in law, both had cancer. Both were living in Oklahoma. Appreciating the importance of family, he stayed four months then they went back to Oklahoma. In November of 2006 he parked his car in El Reno, Okla. and was hired as City Manager until 2015.

He wanted to be by the kids and said it was time to return home. About the time he was ready to hang up his hat, he had a call from a Harold Pumper, the executive director of the Oklahoma Public Officials Hall of Fame, who announced that Tony was selected to the Public Officials Hall of Fame. He will be inducted Sept. 24 of this year. Tony is both proud of the honor, and humbled by it. He feels it’s a credit not to himself but to those like his dad, and his many friends that morally supported and truly believed in him.

Now that he’s back ON THE ISLAND. He says he’s just too active to sit around. He thinks about the ideas that the city had years ago, and the differences the implications of those ideas might have meant to the Island. He thinks the world of Mayor Craft and the members of the City Council. He hopes to be able to help if called upon.

The Island is fortunate to have Tony back where he belongs, and I am fortunate to be able to call him a friend. We wish him the very best and expect him to become a large part of the Island life.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

It was a beau�ful summer morning when we le� Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma.

My hair is very important to me and ge�ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa�sfied with the last few a�empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera�on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on �me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau�ful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a li�le chicken a�er the last experiences.

Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a�er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi�on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi�oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo�on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi�oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi�on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all �mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A�er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi�oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no overthe-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A�er shampooing and before condi�oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu�ng any condi�oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A�er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood.

They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works!

Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo�le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!
