69th Baldwin Fair Fair Manager’s Message
“From Farm to Fair”, is the theme chosen for the Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association’s, 69th Annual Fair. It reflects our mission in preserving and promoting Baldwin County’s previous and past agricultural heritage. Farm themes are very popular today, as we see them reflected in many of our daily activities. If its “rusty and dusty,” such as old farm equipment, it’s in high demand for collectors. Many new homes reflect the “Farm Style” design and department stores display farm themed decorative items like the new styled pressure pots, for use in our homes. The decorating magazines feature popular “way back when” collectables found at estate and yard sales. The demand for old wagon wheels, old chicken coops, old rusty metal signs, antique farm equipment and iron skillets brings a competitive price. For “Fair folks,” this is not news, we’ve know this for many years! Another mission of most all Alabama County Fairs is to provide a showcase exhibiting new models and ideas for agriculture, education, industry, community and youth organizations. Our Fair has a great history of participation from all these groups. As I put together the Fair each year, I truly enjoy the continued support from the Baldwin County Fair, Board of Directors. BALDWINCOFAIR.COM
The Coliseum and Arena facilities offer so many more safe and modern amenities for the public use in all the community events. I am reminded of the challenges of the limited facilities, my father and other fair board directors must have had, during those early fair years. It’s an honor to have excellent facilities for the county fair. The fair board and I, appreciate the support of the Baldwin County Commission, in keeping this facility a “show place” for our county.

From The Office Of
Rick Pate
Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Welcome to the Fair! As the newly elected Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the fair. County fairs are not only rides and entertainment, they also provide an opportunity to showcase Alabama agriculture and our state’s heritage. Since the 1850’s fairs have been held across our state to encourage young people as they participate in livestock competitions, to showcase local gardeners’ handiwork, and Rick Pate to support the artistic and cultural pursuits of citizens by displaying their artwork. Even in our fast-paced society, the fair experience has not lost the tradition of celebrating agriculture. Even though the number of Alabama farms has decreased 6%, the value of agricultural products sold on these remaining farms has increased by 7% since 2012. This proves that farmers continue to work hard every day to increase productivity by embracing technology and innovations. Farmers are efficient, dedicated stewards of the land and committed to feeding the world. The fair is a perfect venue to honor farmers for their contribution to our food supply and rural communities. I hope you take the opportunity while at the fair to visit the exhibits and learn about livestock, local foods, and those who produce them. The employees of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries send best wishes to those who play a part in making our county fairs a success each year. We appreciate your continued support for Alabama farmers, foresters, and agribusinesses! Sincerely,
Commissioner Rick Pate

PIONEERING FAMILY – DILLON FAMILY OPERATES FAMILY DAIRY FARM FOR THREE DECADES IN FOLEY By John Underwood john@gulfcoastmedia.com FOLEY — The Baldwin County Cattle and Fair Association is pleased to honor the Dillon Family of Foley as the 2019 Pioneering Family at this year’s Baldwin County Fair, which will be held Sept. 17-21 at the Baldwin County Coliseum and Fairgrounds in Robertsdale. A native of Harvard, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, John Dillon moved to Baldwin County with his wife, four sons and two daughters in February 1961, setting up a family dairy in Foley. “It was a family-run operation,” says son Lloyd. “Everyone did their part to keep the operation going for more than three decades.” John Dillon, right, and sons, from left, Elvin, Lloyd and Keith. While the Dillon family maintained a small dairy operation in Illinois before moving to Foley, Lloyd Dillon said the family built the Foley operation from the ground up. “We started out with about 60 cows of all different breeds,” he said, “but it wasn’t long before dad started buying dairy grade Holsteins.” At its peak, Lloyd says the Dillon family maintained about 200 to 250 dairy-grade Holsteins and grew all the feed for them on the 2,800-acre spread. According to an article published in The Onlooker in 1969, the Dillon family played host to dairy farmers from throughout the state during a field day held Thursday, April 17, held in conjunction with the Alabama Holstein Friesian Association. “Tommie Sellars of Millersville, Ala., president of the Alabama State Holstein Friesian Association, opened the meeting welcoming the group to Baldwin County. “A dairy judging contest and a tour of the Dillon farm was cancelled after heavy rains began falling following the opening of the meeting. “John Dillon, host for the event, explained to the guests the operation of the Foley Dairy pointing out that the dairy was now milking over 200 head of cows. He said that last year’s records showed an average of 199 cows being milked with milk production totaling over 12,000 pounds per cow per year for John and Glenda Dillon. 1968. 20 • 69th Baldwin County Fair 2019

At its peak, the Dillon dairy farm in Foley was processing nearly 250 dairy-grade Holsteins.
“He pointed out that registered Holsteins make up approximately one-eighth of the milking herd but that the company plans to keep increasing the number of registered cows as replacements are needed.” According to an article published in 1993 by Baldwin County Extension Service agent-coordinator Ed Tunnell, over the next 30 years the Foley dairy grew to “one of the state’s outstanding Holstein Dairy farms.” After John Dillon died in 1991, the family maintained the farm for a short period of time, before his survivors, which at the time included three sons and a daughter, sold the cows and equipment at auction in 1993.

BALDWIN COUNTY FAIR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Diane Sopr was born in Opelika and grew up in Robertsdale. She attended Robertsdale High School and Mobile College, graduating with a teaching degree in 1971. After college she taught in Baldwin County Schools, West Point (Georgia) City School System and Faith Presbyterian School. As a teenager she began teaching children’s Sunday School and did so for many years as well as being a church pianist for several years. She and her husband are members of 3 Circle Church. Diane and her husband Joe have been married for 48 years and reside in Silverhill on the family farm with their two dogs, O’Malley and Zoie. They have three children: Robbie (Alexandra), Amanda, Jessica (Joshua) and four grandchildren: Dalton, Bayleigh Noelle, Perrie Elizabeth and Juliette Louise. Diane calls herself a “people person.” She loves meeting people wherever she goes striking up conversations with total strangers about anything from family, to what it’s like to be a Cattlewoman. She says that most people she talks to are really very friendly. Diane is always willing to help out and do for people whenever and wherever she’s able to. She is also a member of the Baldwin County Farmer’s Federation Women’s Committee where she is also involved with community projects. Being a Cattlewoman for the past 20 plus years she says has been so awesome. “It’s so exciting to watch the expressions on everyone’s faces, especially the children, when I tell them about the by-products we get from cows that we use in everyday life. Things like cosmetics, vitamins, medicines, crayons, chewing gum, candies, gelatin, photo film and even cake mixes. “When talking to people about what Cattlewomen do, they are amazed. Contrary to what most people believe, you do not have to own cattle to be a Cattlewoman. All you have to do is support the Beef Industry in our county, state and nationally and be willing to invest some time volunteering to help educate the community about the value of beef in our everyday life. We do this in many different ways, from reading about beef cattle to elementary students and having hands on demonstrations with them in the classrooms, hosting a Beef Cookoff each year for the Junior and Senior High School students through the FACS program offering cash prizes. We also support the 24 • 69th Baldwin County Fair 2019

students who go on to compete at the state level. We support special needs organizations here in the county with monetary and volunteer time, do beef demos at various locations and also work at the County Fair helping to register, set up and judge entries in addition to having our own booth. “It’s a lot of hard work and long hours but, the joy of seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the Fair each year sharing information, recipes and doing games with the children is such an awesome and satisfying feeling that you just have to smile and then wonder, how can we make it better next year.” Diane would like to thank all the Baldwin County Cattlewomen for the privilege of serving as your president this past year and is looking forward to serving you again this next year. PETTING ZOO ADPH release
MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Public Health encourages using safe practices to prevent the spread of disease while attending petting zoos and animal exhibits during the 69th annual Baldwin County Fair. ADPH encourages all those attending, especially children, to observe the “Wash Your Hands” and “No Food or Drink” signs that will be posted at points of entry and exit of animal exhibits. Below are some simple and effective steps recommended to reduce the hazards to visitors of animal areas: • Visitors should not eat or drink in the animal area. • All visitors should wash their hands after leaving the animal area. • Convenient hand-washing stations (using only potable water) with an available waterless hand sanitizer should be provided at the exit of the animal area. • As an additional precaution, it is recommended that rabies vaccinations be given to all animals in petting zoo areas. Also, all animals which exhibit signs of illness should be removed from public contact immediately. For more information visit the Alabama Department of
Public Health website, alabamapublichealth.gov.

Robertsdale cowboy Kyle Irwin makes good By John Underwood john@gulfcoastmedia.com Robertsdale native Kyle Irwin cut his teeth on events like the Bo Campbell Rodeo, which will be held again this year during the Baldwin County Fair Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21. The 2008 graduate of Robertsdale High School, who is also a relative of Bo Campbell, the son of Robertsdale Council member Ruthie Campbell and Ken Irwin, Kyle is poised to make another run at the National Finals Rodeo which will be held later this year in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old, who now lives in Florida with his wife Randa and son, claimed the top prize in steer wrestling competition at the famed Calgary Stampeded held in July of this year in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “This is kind of lifechanging for us,” Irwin said in an interview with the Wrangler Network, “this kind of money and these wins.” Billed as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” the 10-day event attracts more than 1 million visitors per year and features one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions. After winning the Alabama state high school championship twice and finishing once as reserve champion, Kyle joined the
National Finals Rodeo circuit in 2011 after winning the NIRA Central Plains Region titles in 2010 and 2012 as an amateur and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo four times. He has qualified for the Vegas finals four of the last five years, finishing second in the world standings in 2014, 13th in 2015, fifth in 20176 and 12th last year.

Are solar panels coming to Foley? Riviera Utilities in early talks of bringing solar to the city By JESSICA VAUGHN jessica@gulfcoastmedia.com
FOLEY — Could Foley soon be home to a new array of solar panels? That is the hope of Tom DeBell, the General Manager and CEO at Riviera Utilities. DeBell came before the Foley council on Monday, June 5, to introduce the idea of placing an array of solar panels at a yet undecided location. “I just wanted to introduce this concept to you,” DeBell began. “We’ve got an opportunity to get the community solar, and the good news about it is we can do it at practically no cost to us.” Riviera purchases its power through Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, otherwise known as AMEA, who have recently set aside funds for this project. While the process is still in the
early stages, DeBell and his core team at Riviera have already begun seeking out locations that may be used for the solar array. “I just wanted to introduce this idea, we’re not looking for any action today,” DeBell stressed. “We have to negotiate some agreements on who’s going to own what, how the agreements are going to work, and what land it’s going to be on. But as to what our message is with this project, it’s that we want to be the local leader in doing this, and I see this as a great opportunity for us to partner between Riviera, the city, and bring the schools into it.” If the panels were to come, AMEA would do an array like the one that they set up in Montgomery, which is a 50KW array. Though a small array, approximately the equivalent of 10 Honda generators, it would be the start of bringing solar energy into Foley, and a means SEE SOLAR, PAGE

On Tuesday, June 6, activities kicked off at the Robertsdale Public Library with animals from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. Courtney Wise, the zoo’s program animal keeper; and assistant Jill Normand presented four animals on Tuesday, a ferret; a milk snake (not to be confused with its poisonous cousin, the coral snake); a chinchilla; and a chocolate skunk, which was specially bred in captivity as a pet. The zoo has two chocolate skunks, Wise said, Pepe (shown here) and Milton. “It turns out that they did not make great pets,” Wise said. And because their scent glands were removed (their main line of defense) and their natural color was bred out, they could not be turned out into the wild. Representatives from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo will be on hand at the library with more furry friends every Tuesday in June as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program.

FOLEY — On Jan. 28, 1983, Lt. Commander Michael Awood flew a training jet out of Pensacola. It is believed that the jet had come out of repairs, and Awood was taking it up on a test run. He radioed for help around the time that he flew over the Foley area, and soon after he crashed in the wooded area south of Juniper Street and Riviera Boulevard. He lost his life in the crash, and though the fine details of the accident are unknown, what is known is that Awood did not eject from his plane, as he could have done, and the plane went down in an
unpopulated area. As a result, no one else came to any injury or harm in the accident. The Foley Police Department has initiated the steps to place a memorial dedicated to Awood near the crash site, to commemorate his memory and ultimate sacrifice. “He lost his life in service of his country,” said Deputy Chief Thurston Bullock. “Although via a trainer jet, Lt. Awood was still in performance of his duties, and we want to recognize that with a memorial.” Prior to the planning of the memorial, the police department reached SEE AWOOD, PAGE

Plans approved for new pylon OWA sign along Hwy 59 By JESSICA VAUGHN jessica@gulfcoastmedia.com
FOLEY — Gloria Boatwright with Foley Holdings LLC attended the May 15 Foley council meeting to discuss the plans for a proposed pylon sign that is being prepared for the city. The sign will be to grab drivers’ attention and to help direct
them to OWA, the Foley Event Center, and the Sports Tourism Complex. “This will be at the median that is at Highway 59,” Boatwright said. “It is between Southern Chevrolet and where the Ryan’s Steakhouse used to be. We’re proposing that it will be a 45-foot-tall sign that will have OWA, an electronic board,
and a directional that turns people into the property. It will get drivers back to the Foley Event Center and the Sports Tourism Complex.” Foley Holdings LLC has been working closely with the city officials and the Engineering Department to make something that will pull the traffic off Highway 59 and back into the

Unveiling history
Baldwin County is now an official Purple Heart County after the Baldwin County Commission issued a proclamation on Tuesday, June 6. Purple Heart recipients from across the county came out to the commission meeting to be honored with the proclamation. Dr. Barry Booth, who has been active with supporting local veterans for years, thanked the commission for their willingness to designate the county as a Purple Heart County. “I want to be sure to thank the commission for their support of this and many of the things we’ve done for our veterans here locally,” Booth said. Baldwin County is the third county in Alabama to be designated as a Purple Heart County, as Pike County and St. Clair County have also been designated as such. Commissioner Skip Gruber thanked the Purple Heart veterans in attendance for their service. “I want to thank each and every one of you for your service,” Gruber said. “There are a lot of people who served, and sadly a lot who didn’t return back from their service. It’s an honor to have you with us today to declare Baldwin County a Purple Heart County.” Commission Chairman Chris Elliott said he felt odd receiving thanks from the veterans for the proclamation. “I don’t get uncomfortable in this seat a lot, but I did when you said thank you to us,” Elliott said. “The thanks should flow from us to you for everything you’ve done for us and our country.” The Purple Heart is the oldest decoration in present use and was initially created by George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit. The Purple Heart was the first American service award or decoration made available to the common soldier, and is specifically awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States.

and handling practices. Rules and Regulations for Goats, Sheep, Poultry and Rabbits • The judging of all animals will be judged on accomplishments. • All animal exhibits will stay on exhibit for the full duration of the fair. Removal of the animals before the designated dismissal time will result in forfeiture of awards, unless approved by a fair official. • All individuals exhibiting live animals are required to register their exhibits at the livestock registration table on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the week of the fair.
