For the Kiddos If the kids want candy galore, there are a few options in the area to get all the candy their little hearts desire.

BOOLUS

LuLu’s, Gulf Shores Oct. 28 11 a.m.-2 p.m. As a part of the kids’ trick-or-treating activities, participants can set up a display in the trunk of their car to spread the word about their organization and hand out candy to the trunk or treating kids on the grounds of the restaurant. Participants provide their own candy and all Trunk or Treat participants will receive a $25 LuLu’s gift card per car, with the winner of the best decorated trunk receiving a $150 LuLu’s gift card. Inside LuLu’s, the spooky fun will have free pumpkin decorating, face painting, kid’s crafts, arcade contest, fortune teller, kids costume contest, and more. Kids can partake in a Spooktacular costume contest in age categories for boys and ghouls with prizes for the winners.

TRUNK R’ TREAT AT THE WHARF

Main Street at The Wharf, Orange Beach Oct. 31 6-8:30 p.m. “Trunk or Treat is an annual Halloween-inspired event held at The Wharf by Christian Life Church in Orange Beach,” said Sheena Mizell, marketing manager of The Wharf. “Tons of folks decorate the trunks of their cars in different themes and dole out gobs of candy to children. The event is centered around wholesome family fun with a variety of kids activities available throughout the evening. Christian Life Church graciously provides all of the candy to the ‘trunks’ who participate.” More than 4,000 kids will attend the 7th Annual event and more than 45 trunks are open for candy. Other than trick-or-treating, there are more surprises on the side of the event. “Trick or treating at the different trunks is the big draw, but the activities on-site are always an added bonus!,” Mizell said. “We will have pony and camel rides, bouncy houses, face painting, a costume contest, and more. We urge families to dress to the nines in their best festive garb! We provide a safe environment for kiddos of all ages to gather, meet other community families, and have a blast with friends and loved ones.”

TRICK-OR-TREATING

Tanger Outlets, Foley Oct. 31 6-7:30 p.m. This spooktacular event invites kids of all ages to collect candy from over 100 participating shops at the Tanger Outlets. “Before you begin Trick-or-Treating at participating stores, visit the playground area to get some treats and have fun dancing to your favorite Halloween hits,” said Debra Brown, general manager of Tanger Outlets in Foley. “Then go to our participating stores and enjoy all the yummy treats provided TangerStyle.”

The First Annual Fall Block Party hosted by the City of Gulf Shores will take place at Meyer Park on Oct. 28. The events begin at 2 p.m., a bike ride at 5:30 p.m. and games until 6:30 p.m. The City also plans on showing a movie at 6 p.m. that night. “We've reached out to entities within the city such as the fire department, library, fitness centers, athletic coordinator and more and we're showcasing all the city does for the community,” said Erica Bassett, events supervisor at City of Gulf Shores. “It's a community based event. We're going to have prizes, ticket booths set up, a duck booth, a DJ all day, and just random fair-like, family friendly games for all ages.” The block party also plans on having a costume contest for both kids and adults. Coastal Alabama Communty College is also donating 120 cupcakes for the event’s Cake Walk.

“It’s going to be a good time for the community to come out and see what the city of Gulf Shores has to offer for everyone,” Bassett said. “Whether they live in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Foley, come out and bring a friend and have fun for the day!”

New Fall Brews BY DESTINY BROWN If you’re looking for a new favorite brew this season, check out some of these local choices to guide you into the fall fever.

SWEET POTATO ALE

»» WHERE: Big Beach Brewing, Gulf Shores »» BEGAN BREWING: Spring 2017 »» BEHIND THE BEER: “I’ve been not wanting to brew a pumpkin beer for years,” said Rod Murray, head brewer at Big Beach Brewing. “I don’t like pumpkin beers, but I’ve had a few sweet potato beers over the years and really like the character of them. I started asking around for local sweet potatoes, and Luna's got us 100 pounds of sweet potatoes ready for dumping in the mash with the grain. You gain a lot of flavor and aroma from the yam this way and it carries that into the boil and the finished beer. The owner of Big Beach was always asking me to do an EPA, which is an English Pale Ale, and I wanted to reward him for allowing me to brew whatever I want.” »» TASTES LIKE: “You get the sweet potato nose and color. The flavor we combined gives you that yam quality that you expect with a hint of light caramel that reminds me of Thanksgiving dinner. No additional spices added to it, but we did add east kent goldings, which is an earthy hops, a palisade, an American hop in the fermenter that gives it a little floral but also backs up that herbal almost spicy flavor to it. Caramel malt to support the sweetness and add classic to the style.” »» WHAT MAKES THIS BEER A GOOD FALL BREW? “It kind of ties in with the whole pumpkin craze, which I don’t believe in or like, but as you move into fall and winter, the beers traditionally get dark and heavier,” Murray said.

Big Beach has more fall beers coming out this month. Stop by the brewery and check out the seasonal brews! 12 Beachin’ ● October 2017

ORANGE BEACH ALE

»» WHERE: GTs On The Bay, Orange Beach »» BEGAN BREWING: June 2017 »» BEHIND THE BEER: “The property came with an unused set up so we put it to use!” said Aaron Willis, general manager of GTs On The Bay. Bert Scott, the GM of Luna's Eat & Drink (a southern style gastro pub with 32 taps and 40 cans) is also a home brewer. So he quickly went to work getting together ingredients for this awesome ale! It will now be their signature ale that will always be available.

»» TASTES LIKE: Easy drinking yet full of character. Exactly what we need to beat the southern heat, yet perfect for the cooler fall weather as well. »» WHAT MAKES THIS BEER DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS AND A GOOD FALL BREW? “The fact that it’s light, but also full of character,” Willis said. “It’s hard to find a beer that will cool in the summer yet warm you in the fall. However, Bert did a tremendous job at making this Ale do just that! We’re all excited to get started on a few other styles as well! Stay tuned!”

For an exciting lunch or dinner you just can’t beat. Come Empty. Leave Full...and hopefully Have a Laugh or two!

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

abor Day ended a long and enjoyable red snapper season. That leaves us with the question, “What can I fish for now in Alabama state salt waters?” The bigger question is, “What can I not fish for and keep?” Trigger fish is a delicious fish to eat, but you must know the regulations for keeping them. Keep in mind, you can fish for anything, anytime. The problem is, what can I keep and not be fined? Bull reds can only be kept in Alabama salt water within 3 miles of land or in the bay or rivers. Slot reds are 16 to 26 inches and three per person per day. Bull Reds are over 26 inches and one per person. Trigger fish is somewhat more complicated. All Federal waters are closed to recreational fishing except for commercial fisherman. It is rare to find trigger fish within 3 miles in Alabama, however Florida has 9 miles of state water. Trigger fish has been closed all year with the exception of Florida, which opened the season around Labor Day. One other weekend in September, and Oct. 7-8 and 14-15. Alabama fisherman can go to Florida and catch trigger fish provided they have a Florida license and can even bring them directly back into Perdido Pass, Alabama provided they also have an Alabama salt water fishing license. The fine for even one illegal trigger fish can be $450 and a friend of mine can confirm. October is typically good fishing around the Gulf Coast. The water is cooler, red fish, and often on Dixey Bar near Ft. Morgan, speckled trout start moving towards the rivers. Soon, flounder will start their migration toward the Gulf. Enjoy your time on the water, but be safe and know the regulations. CONTACT INFO: CAPT. PHIL 251-223-3682 OR ISLANDWESTCHARTERS@YAHOO.COM 22 Beachin’ ● October 2017

OCT. 28 THE ORIGINAL GERMAN SAUSAGE FESTIVAL

Elberta Town Park, 13052 Main St., Elberta 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The Elberta Sausage Festival makes its semiannual return to that South Baldwin hamlet. Held in Elberta Town Park, just north of the town’s only stop light on Hwy. 98, the event attracts up to 20,000 revelers, according to organizers. A 40-year tradition, the festival is a major regional event that attracts a cross section of the community in what has become a reunion type atmosphere. It is also the main revenue source for the area’s volunteer fire department. Festival fans can enjoy Elberta’s famous German sausage and sauerkraut, plus continuous entertainment for adults and children, and 250 arts & crafts booths. There will also be carnival rides and a full scale Midway. Of course, there will also be a Bier Garten featuring a large selection of imported and domestic beers. Other scrumptious foods will include German style filled cabbage, potato salad, goulash, red beans and rice, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn, peanuts and homemade baked goods.
The Bellview Stumpfiddle Band will perform with the North End Stompers and other cloggers. There will also be polka, country and German music. Spearheaded by Elberta’s Volunteer Fire Department since 1978, festival proceeds are

used for improving not only the fire department, but the town as well. Additionally, local non-profits benefit from the festival through proceeds from their booth sales and parking lot fees. The festival is held twice a year — on the last Saturday of March and the last Saturday of October. Although it has been tweaked a bit over the years, the original secret recipe for Elberta's famous sausage is credited to Alfred Stucki, who managed Elberta’s Locker Plant from 1953 until his death in 1973. About 7,000 pounds of German Sausage are consumed at each fest. WEBSITE: http://www.elbertafire.com/

BUILDING AN one sand castle EMPIRE at a time BY ALLISON MARLOW

Initially, Janel Hawkins’ father questioned her judgment. Could she really make a sustainable income sculpting … sand castles? Now, he wonders why she didn’t open her business sooner. Hawkins owns Sand Castle University in Gulf Shores. Day by day, grain by grain, she is building a sand empire. After opening her doors earlier this year the Gulf Shores native has already turned an impressive profit and believes she can double her business in the 32 Beachin’ ● October 2017

next year. And yes, you read correctly, she teaches people to build sand castles. “It’s a great time for families. They come to the beach to vacation, this is a good way to spend time together,” she said. And it turns out, working with sand is a lot tougher than it looks. The self-taught artist used to work in clay. She began experimenting with sand because, let’s face it, sand is free. A Florida-based sand castle company hired her to sculpt on the beaches there. Within two years she was managing that business. Two years later, she moved home and opened Sand Castle University. A giant sculpture of dozens of volleyballs for the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in May was her first client. The giant creation took three days to build. For the first entire day Hawkins filled her sand with water. Water is glue. Water is what makes 34 Beachin’ ● October 2017

“I take as many pictures as I can. I usually sit and have a drink and enjoy it and talk to people,” Hawkins says. “It’s a bit like performance art. Once it’s done, it’s over.” sandcastles grow taller, wider and stronger. Depending on the size of the creation, Hawkins said she can spend as much as seven hours a day working on one sculpture. As she works, she fills a 5-gallon bucket that she has cut the plastic bottom out of. First she dumps in sand and then with water — lots and lots of water. She lets the mixture settle and taps the side of the bucket, much like a mason does to cement. She adds sand and water, lets it settle. Eventually, she lifts the bucket off.

She is left with a perfectly shaped sand cylinder. “Painters buy their canvas, you have to create yours,” she says. There are no colorful, rampartlined buckets or plastic toy shovels here. Instead, Hawkins carries a small workman’s toolbox filled with cups, measuring spoons, paint brushes and kitchen spatulas. Anything can be a tool, she says. And you should use tool to sculpt sand, except your hands. “You don’t paint with a hot dog, you shouldn’t sculpt with your hands,” she

said. “Tools keep the designs smooth.” Once she has her sand canvas, she works from the top down. Most people build their castles from the bottom, up. That, however, usually results in disaster. “Sand naturally falls down. This is negative sculpting. You take away what you don’t want,” she said. During the summer, nearly every day is filled with classes teaching basics as well as advanced sand sculpting. Those students create sea creatures and mermaids. In the winter months, Hawkins caters to weddings, engagements and team building sessions. She works seven days a week, rarely has a day off during the summer months and is considering hiring more artists next summer to help cater to the swell of customers. However, sand does make for risky business. Storms can strike and kill a week’s salary. Winds shift the perfect designs. Frisbees and footballs? They are a sand castle builder’s mortal

enemies. Plus there is no guarantee the sand is going to cooperate. Taller structures have a higher chance of collapsing. And sand, Hawkins says, has moods. Dry sand is useless. Fluffy sand holds more water. Children who head straight for the thick, waterlogged sand along the waterline are digging in the wrong place. Move back toward the rear of the beach and find

the fluffiest sand possible. And then, soak it. At the end of the day, the hardest part is leaving. Leave no trace rules require Hawkins to destroy anything she builds so it doesn’t impede animals as they make their way to and from the water. “I take as many pictures as I can. I usually sit and have a drink and enjoy it and talk to people,” she says. “It’s a bit like performance art. Once it’s done, it’s over.”

UNIVERSITY Sand Castle University will be at the annual Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores to help teach competitors the final points of sand sculpting on Friday and then be on hand to help during the competition on Saturday.

Tips for building the best sand sculpture, from Sand Castle University in Gulf Shores

1. Use tons of water - Water is glue. Dry sand is going to crumble. 2. Use tools, not hands - You never want to touch your creation with your hands. Tools will help create crisp lines. 3. Start at the top - Most people make the moat first and then carve the castle but that will cover up what you’ve already done. Always start at the top and work your way down. 4. Start with plan A but be ready for plan B – If the sand doesn’t want to cooperate, you have to work with it anyway. If an arch falls or a wall crumbles you have to work around it and style something else in that spot.
