WHAT'S THERE TO DO NOW? 8 Beachin’ November 2016

EVERYTHING! Just us

by Destiny Brown

Local businesses are booming during the spring and summer season, but the fall and winter is a great time to get to know the neighborhood. This the time at the beach when there is no traffic, no lines and no strangers. If you head down to one of your local hangouts, you’re almost guaranteed to find a familiar face. Here are a few tips to make the most of the “off season” at the beach. Enjoy the weather and the peace. You’re not going to find the beach this empty for another year, so take time to enjoy the beauty. Take a walk on your favorite beach or take the opportunity to explore new beaches in the area. You won’t regret taking a stroll on the beach to enjoy the sunset. Get to know the happy hours in the area. And there are many. This is the time when restaurants and bars lure customers in with great drink and food specials that need to be taken advantage of. By the end of the winter, you may have a favorite bar you will frequent in the spring and summer time.

You’ll also have experienced new places to bring your friends and family when they come visit. Taste the local fare. Now that you can try every restaurant here with no wait, try every restaurant you can! Get a taste of the steak place you’ve been hearing so much about, or the brunch you’ve been wanting to indulge in – line free! Many restaurants have great early specials this time of year. Get out of the city. You never know what treasures you might find. Many great restaurants and other venues are located a little off the beaten path, and are worth the drive. Take this chance to explore new places to bring your friends and family and see what you can find in surrounding areas such as Magnolia Springs, Elberta or Foley or even take a day trip to a further city like Fairhope, Daphne or Spanish Fort. With all of the things to do in Baldwin County, you’ll see what makes this area such a special place! November 2016 ● Beachin’ 9

Ask the Locals by Destiny Brown

We asked the people who really know the best things to do at the beach, the locals. Find out what the people who live here year-round enjoy to do during the “offseason” and do as the locals do.

“What is one thing you think every local should do?” 1. Create something at The Hot Shop Jessica Langston, Marketing/Children’s Programs Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach

Local since 2013 “I think every local should take the time to blow glass in The Hot Shop. We are blessed to have such an amazing art form available to us here on the Gulf Coast, much less the opportunity to have a handson experience with resident artists.” The Hot Shop: Create your own works of art with direction from glass residents, Dan Rush and Kerry Parks. The duo will guide you through the process of glass blowing hands-on or you can view a demonstration. The Hot Shop is located at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach. It is open MondayFriday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. It’s a perfect season to make your own glass-blown Christmas ornaments.

2. Attend a Themed Wine Dinner Ally Mills Dorrough, Public Relations Coordinator with Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism

Local since 2012 “Every local should savor a scrumptious NUISANCE Group dinner. Our culinary scene is booming, and some of our local chefs have partnered to create delicious masterpieces out of ‘trash fish’ like lionfish and other underutilized or invasive species such as wild boar. Throughout the year, some of our local restaurants – namely Flora-Bama Yacht Club and Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort – host multicourse dinners featuring these concoctions with wine or beer pairings. What a blessing it is to live in such a beautiful and dynamic destination!” NUISANCE Group chefs Chris Sherrill and Brody Olive join creative culinary forces to showcase some of our favorite items paired with some amazing wines. Make plans to join in one on of their wonderful four-course dining adventures. More info on Facebook at NUISANCE Group.

3. Check Out the Local Art Eloise Thomley, for Gulf Coast Arts Alliance

Local since 2005 “My recommendation for locals is to seek out the works of our wonderful local artists. We have so many talented artists living all along Coastal Alabama and their works are displayed in galleries and shops throughout the area. Buying local keeps that money flowing back into our coastal community.” At the beach, you’ll find art like nowhere else. Unique art is found everywhere you look and most artists tend to keep it local by checking their creations into the area’s museums, art markets and galleries galore. If you want to be an artist yourself, take one of the many classes that are offered to improve your creative side.

4. Music at the Frank Brown Music Festival Nick Biebricher, Owner of Sandy Roots Music Productions

Local since 2007 “My favorite thing about the fall and winter down here is the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival. It’s the oldest, largest songwriting festival in the world. Our town gets flooded with hit makers of our favorite songs. People get to connect with the creators and learn how and why some of their favorite songs were created.” See No. 1 hit songwriters, up and rising newcomer artists, and just all-around original music. This year on Nov. 3-13, the event will expand to more than 30 venues and more than 200 artists will perform throughout Baldwin County in Alabama and Escambia County, Fla. 10 Beachin’ ● November 2016

5. Explore Perdido Key Christina Christian, Musician

to experience.

Native of Foley, Alabama “I think every local should go spend a night (or day) in Perdido Key. On your way into Perdido, stop and get a bushwacker, but only one! Then find your way into Perdido to kick back and watch live music at one of the many venues there like the Perdido Sports Bar or The Purple Parrot. Go enjoy some local original music, it’s free therapy.” Take a chance to explore new places that are outside your normal beach hangouts. Perdido Key, Orange Beach’s neighboring city, is only a short distance away and offers many new adventures for locals

6. Get Out on the Water Jenifer Surface, Marketing, Public & Community Relations Director at Flora-Bama

Native to Baldwin County “I would tell people to get out on the water. Whether you’re just going to the beach or getting on a kayak, paddle board or if you’re fortunate enough to have a boat. It’s here and I don’t think most people experience it because we’re accustomed to living here.” There are many water-bound activities that need to be taken advantage of at the beach! See one of the main reason people travel from all over to experience the Coast’s beautiful waters.

7. Take a Trip to Fort Morgan Tommy Vogel, Artist

Local since 2004 “Plan a trip to Fort Morgan. There’s so much to do out there like ride the ferry.” The Mobile Bay Ferry crosses beautiful Mobile Bay, Alabama and connects SR 193 at Dauphin Island on the west side with SR 180 at Mobile Point on the east. Considered “the Gulf-Coast’s Most Scenic Drive”, the ferry saves travelers hours of driving time plus the high cost of fuel by providing a travel link across the mouth of Mobile Bay.

8. Buy Fresh Seafood in Bon Secour Jacob Harris, Assistant Marketing Director for Columbia Southern University

Local since 2013 “If you are a local you must drive out to Bon Secour to buy fresh Gulf seafood and just take a break to an even slower style of life” Bon Secour is a neighboring community of Gulf Shores that brings in the freshest seafood from the Gulf. For a chance to see seasoned shrimp boats, fresh seafood markets and an abundance of local fishermen – take a trip to Bon Secour.

9. Enjoy the Beach Kim Ward, Owner of Kim Ward Realty

From Gulf Shores “Take advantage of the Gulf Coast. Growing up in Gulf Shores, almost everyday my parents walked with us on the beach to search for seashells and swim in the Gulf and I passed that ritual on to my children.” From West Beach to Perdido Key and beyond, explore for yourself to see which has the best sea shells or which has the best wildlife.

10. Take a Walk or a Hike Peyton Yarborough, Realtor at RE/MAX Paradise Orange Beach

From Gulf Shores “Cooler weather is the perfect time to walk the Pine Beach Trail down Ft. Morgan. The mile or so hike through the woods is much less buggy this time of year. The reward for your hike is a beautiful, uninhabited beach with huge undisturbed sand dunes. It is also the perfect spot for stargazing at night. And it’s free!” There are many trails to take a new adventure. The Back Country Trail, Graham Creek Nature Preserve and Pine Beach Trail are just a few of the scenic routes at the beach that make a great hike!

Take a Day Trip to the

National Naval Aviation Museum If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea to take up your vacation time, load up and take a day trip! There are many places for the all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and offer new memories that you never even thought of!

by Destiny Brown The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola takes pride in being one of the top three largest aviation museums in the world. Each year, more than 900,000 visitors pass through the museum doors to experience the history and hands-on exhibits the museum has to offer. Unlike most museums of its kind, the National Naval 12 Beachin’ ● November 2016

Aviation museum allows it’s patrons to actually reach out and touch the artifacts rather than being restrained behind a velvet rope. Capt. Sterling Gilliam, a retired Navy Captain, is the current director of the National Aviation Museum. He served 30 years in the Navy and jumped at the opportunity when asked to become director of the museum. “We tell the story of naval aviation quite well,” said Capt. Gilliam. “We have a wonderful campus and a lot of iconic

exhibits that map back to the beginning of naval aviation in 1911. We have over 360 volunteers, many of them affiliated with the Navy and aviation that understand the museum very well. They also love providing tours for patrons to better understand the rich 105 year legacy of aviation.” Touring the museum, you will find a number of active duty volunteers as well as volunteers who have retired from their aviation careers. You can take a self-guided tour through the 400,000 square feet museum and trolley tours are offered to view the rest of the 60-acre campus. Many patrons come to the museum to view the Navy Flight Demonstration Squad. Also known as the Blue Angels. “When they’re not flying around the country, they practice several times a week here,” Capt. Gilliam said. “When you come to the museum, there is a good chance you’ll see the Blue Angles do a practice performance. It’s a neat opportunity for our patrons.” Earlier this year, the museum upgraded to a 4-D digital, 60-foot screen to show popular flight movies such as the Spirit of Aviation, D-Day and many more. The theatre also has a concession stand for refreshments. The establishment even has its own restaurant to accommodate all day visitors. “For those looking to grab a bite to eat, we have our Cubie Cafe and its part museum exhibit and part restaurant,” Capt. Gilliam said. “The restaurant is fashioned after The Cubie

Point Officers Club in the Republic of the Philippines and it was replicated here. You can have lunch, grab a cocktail or have a quick snack.” The National Naval Aviation Museum has something for everyone. It’s exceptionally special to the former or current naval officers who bring their families to the museum. “What we really captured my interest was the family nature of this,” Capt. Gilliam said. “Its very people oriented and you meet some wonderful people from all walks of life in the Navy. At the museum, there’s something for everybody. One family member may have an affiliation and they are ecstatic to share their memories with the rest of their family members. For them to come and show their son and daughter or mother and father is a special thing.”

BEACH ART

Erik Olson Metal Artist

“My inspiration is to make people happy,” Olson said. “I enjoy designing and putting things together. There’s a lot of metal art out there that’s mainly cut-out flat pieces, but I like to start with larger pieces. I guess I just have an eye for it.”

by Destiny Brown Erik Olson is a second generation metal artist. He grew up in Pensacola where his father taught art at Pensacola Junior College, currently Pensacola State College. “I grew up around metal art by helping my dad in his workshop, but I didn’t really get into it until I was 30 and getting married,” Olson said. “I made a metal piece of art for my in-laws. Other people also seemed to like my work, so I continued to do it.” Soon, Olson was traveling around the country and entering his art in a series of shows. He has kept his homestead in Pensacola, and continues to create his work in this dad’s workshop. Before he begins his art, Olson travels to a local scrapyard to choose his inventory. “I pick out a bunch of steel and start putting it together,” Olson said. “I have an eye for lines, so I’ll start a design and start putting objects together until they look cool. Then, I take an oxygen acetylene torch and start cutting and take a seven-inch grinder and grind the steel off of it. I’ll work with it until I like it. Sometimes I put stuff away and I’ll come back to it.” Coming back to his work with a fresh start is one of Olson’s favorite things to do. 16 Beachin’ ● November 2016

“I like putting it away for a long period of time,” Olson said. “When I come back to it, it’s fun again. It’s exciting to pick out where I want to go and build for a show.” Olson has a variety of themes for his art, but his main focus is coastal art because it is the backbone of the area. “My inspiration is to make people happy,” Olson said. “I enjoy designing and putting things together. There’s a lot of metal art out there that’s mainly cutout flat pieces, but I like to start with larger pieces. I guess I just have an eye for it.” Olson has won many awards and recognitions for his metal art. He has received first place in more than 40 contests. He has also won Best of Show at Foley Art in the Park and in Deerfield Beach, Florida as well as several competitions across the country. He also did a project for the Department of Agriculture with the State of Florida in which he created 100 sturgeon fish for the “Florida Highway Men” collection. His work is displayed locally at the entrance of Kaiser, Tino’s Fine Art Gallery in Gulf Shores and many homes of patron collectors that have acquired his work throughout the years. “I began art in the first place to travel and to see things,” Olson said. “It worked out and continues to do so.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net November 2016 ● Beachin’ 21

hooked

on fishin with Phil Dortch

Take a Kid Fishing It’s a known fact that our experiences as a child have a major influence on shaping who we are to become as adults. I remember my mom dropping my friend and me off near a bridge on Mobile Causeway to fish. We caught a stringer of Bream which would result in our supper. They were cooked crispy so that you could eat bones and tail. None of this experience we would even dare think of allowing our kids to do today. Oh, how times have changed. As a charter boat captain, some of my most rewarding times is seeing a kid’s eyes light up after catching their first or biggest fish. A simple photo of that experience needs no explanation. Creating memories is what it’s all about. A successful trip is essential. Their attention span is usually short, so catching anything quickly is important. Most any fish will bite shrimp. Make the trip fun so they can’t wait to go with you next time. Fishing is a great opportunity to bond with your family. Take advantage of it and take a kid fishing.
