Take advantage of off-season at the beach by doing everything you wish you could during the summertime, except with no lines! This issue is all about music and the musicians that serenade us at our favorite restaurants, bars and stages. We chatted with a few local musicians about their past, present and future in music. The cover photo was taken on a cool fall afternoon along west beach. Many fishermen are seen planted on the beach after picking the perfect fishing spot in the early evening hours. The silhouettes created by the background of another amazing sunset displays a reverence of beauty, a surge of excitement and a serenity of life along our beaches, which cannot be described in any other way than, Amazing! with local musicians BY DESTINY BROWN Whether you’re dining at your favorite ocean front restaurant, out on the town at your favorite bar scene or spending a autumn Saturday at one of the beach’s art markets, live music is everywhere. Most of the musicians that bring you these tunes are seasoned professionals that gig up and down the island and surrounding areas. For this issue, we did an exclusive Q and A with a few of these local musicians about how they got their foot in music, what they hope to accomplish, and the inspirations behind their music.

Q: When did you begin your music career? AB: I started playing guitar when I was 8 or 9 years old and took lessons to learn the fundamentals. I then took lessons from 12 to 16 and really learned the chords, the blues and a bunch of covers. I developed singing through playing and being in bands when no one else in the band sang. I started learning who I was and learning my voice by playing around the bonfire. Back in 2007 is when I took the first steps to chase the dream. Q: Do you have other jobs, interests or hobbies? AB: I work part-time moving furniture during the week for
a company, but so far I’ve been blessed doing only music where I play three to five shows a week. It’s been good.
Q: What are your biggest inspirations? AB: I’ve always loved Lynyrd Skynyrd. He kind of pushed me at a young age. I’ve grown up on Skynyrd so I wanted to check out Muscle Shoals, Alabama so I moved there and studied a lot. Q: Where do you see your future in music?
AB: There’s no way out. It’s an addiction. It’s a high you get that no alcohol or drug can give than when you’re playing for
over 10,000 people. It’s forever for me. You learn every show and take chances and grow every week. I’m very blessed to do what I do.
Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments in music? AB: Opening up and playing on the big stage before some big artists like Zac Brown and Kid Rock a couple of years ago for Bayfest. It’s been pretty neat doing that. Q: Where can we find you? AB: I have regular gigs at Mudbugs weekly, Flora-Bama, Moe’s in Foley, hotel gigs on the weekends at Holiday Inn, Best Western and Hilton Garden. I also play once in awhile over in Pensacola Beach at Flounders.

Q: When did you begin your music career? CC: I picked up guitar at age 12 and it did not catch on at
first. I then picked it back up at 16 and it’s been history ever since. I’ve always liked singing. I decided I needed to play music also so realized the balance early on. I began playing gigs when I was 18 and had my first paying gig in 2012.
Q: Do you have other jobs, interests or hobbies? CC: I’m the creative left brain type and so it’s all art for me. If it’s painting, songwriting, whatever. Q: What are your biggest inspirations? CC: Just being raised on the Florida Alabama Gulf Coast.
My music has a lot to do with the beach and the country atmosphere that comes with it.
Q: Where do you see your future in music? CC: I definitely want to have some music in TV shows and movies so that’s a goal. Definitely making another album and just writing. I have these connections with 10 Beachin’ ● November 2017
artists in Nashville and am trying to get music into other artists hands and just trying to get our songs cut.
Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments in music? CC: Right now my biggest accomplishment is The Children’s Miracle League song with Nick Biebricher and Sean Gassaway through Sandy Roots Music Productions. The fact that that song is going to be played at every single baseball game they have and everyone will be singing along with it means more than a lot of what I’ve experienced so far. Q: Where can we find you? CC: The Point Restaurant every Thursday where I sing with my band, Ole River String Band. Flora-Bama, Cobalt Restaurant, Cosmo’s, GTs on the Bay and more.

country and bluegrass.
DL: Doug and I started playing together about six years ago. We did a variety of the Pale Moon Rising Band with as many as a five piece at one time. Chris and I met in September of last year at the Malibu and we played a few duo gigs. Then in February, we sat down and decided to do as many trio gigs as we could. We did over 200 shows over the summer.
DH: We put different twists on old country songs. We take
Q: What are your biggest inspirations? CC: I guess my biggest influence as an acoustic player and songwriter is James Taylor. I learned a lot from a guy named Chuck Cannon and of course, bluegrass player Tony Rice. Q: What category would you call your music genre/style? DL: Eclectic. Everything from folk to Southern rock to
a country song and turn it into a Taj Majal.
Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments in music? DL: We did over 200 shows over the summer. One of the reasons we appreciate to get promo and that we’re doing studio stuff is so we can move it up a notch. The biggest thing we did so far was the VIP concert for Jimmy Buffet this year Q: Where can we find you? DL: Cobalt, GTs On The Bay, Luna’s, Tacky Jacks, FloraBama, Fish River Grill, Driftwood at The Wharf, Pleasure Island Tiki Bar and more.

their own. I have had some wonderful bands and worked with awesome players here and it just keeps getting better all the time. I would like to write more and that is definitely in my future. I would love to write an instrumental record. I also see a grand piano of my own in the future.
LZ: I started playing the piano at age 6 (took lessons until Q: What are some of your biggest age 15) and guitar about age 10 (learned from my brother accomplishments in music? and friends that played for folk masses at my Catholic grade school) self-taught. I started up with a band in the mid 70s’ and played at skate rinks, high school dances, neighborhood parties, etc. I later moved on to clubs, college campus parties etc.
Q: Do you have other jobs, interests or hobbies? LZ:
I love to play tennis. My part time day job is bookkeeping and I work with an accountant in Mobile. I also enjoy spending time with my family and helping out with our family business (Mr. Sam’s) in Mobile.
Q: What are your biggest inspirations? LZ: Carole King for her wonderful lyric and melody writing.
Bonnie Raitt for her funky grooves, vocal style, and just all around coolness, especially early Bonnie Raitt. Chuck Leavell for his piano style and instrumental tunes and love his first solo LP and the song “Rain in Spain.”
Q: Where do you see your future in music? LZ: I will always play music as long as I am able. Since I moved back from Nashville, I just let things evolve on
12 Beachin’ ● November 2017
LZ: One of my major accomplishments I believe was to
work with Nashville artists, writers, managers, producers and publishers. Moving to Nashville was a big decision for me. Touring with country star Doug Stone for six years was also another major accomplishment for me. I played keys and sang backup. Writing with Doug landed one of our songs on one of his records and I am still trying to pitch my songs.
Q: Where can we find you? LZ:
Mondays at Nolan’s in Gulf Shores, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Flippers in Orange Beach, Thursdays at Francos in Orange Beach, every 2nd and 4th Sunday at Old 27 Grill in Fairhope for brunch, Sunday nights through Thanksgiving weekend at Perdido Beach Resort.

Frank Brown International Songwriters’
Festival Nov. 9 – 19
BY DESTINY BROWN If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea to take up your off season time, load up and take a day trip. There are many places for all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and offer new memories! What started out as an end of season party 33 years ago has become the oldest festival of its kind in the country. The Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival is an event that songwriters nation-wide look forward to each November and the crowd, venues and volunteers grow each year. Co-owner of Flora-Bama, Joe Gilchrist, has poured his heart and soul into the Songwriters’ Festival to make it what it is today. Through think and thin, hurricanes and the slow season, Gilchrist has managed to keep the event a legendary experience for songwriters and music lovers alike. The event is named after Frank Brown, who was the night watchman at Flora-Bama for over 20 years before retiring at 91 years old. Gilchrist named the Festival after him because he was a father figure to the musicians, employees and patrons of Flora-Bama. “To honor his name, Joe Gilchrist wanted to try to do something to boost business in that November time frame when historically things got so very quiet around here,” said Andy Haynes, director of the Frank Brown International 14 Beachin’ ● November 2017
Songwriters’ Festival. “So the story goes, they just decided to have a party and the party evolved into the Festival.” This year more than 200 songwriters are participating at over two dozen venues in Baldwin and Escambia counties. “Over the years, musicians have submitted applications,” Haynes said. “This year, we’ve received so many and it was difficult to go through them all so we formed a selection committee. We have a data base of over 600 names and we decided to send invitations this year.” Haynes was a volunteer of the Festival for 18 years before getting asked to serve on the board of directors. “There’s so much more talent than we have the capacity to showcase,” Haynes said. “It’s just amazing to me all the inquiries I’ve received.” This year, there will be even more acts and special showcases added to the 10 day event. “For the first time ever, we’re going to have a Country
Music Hall of Fame inductee here, Don Shlitz,” Haynes said. “He wrote “The Gambler,” which Kenny Rogers recorded and coincidentally, Larry Butler from Pensacola, a Grammy Award winning producer and writer, was the producer of.” Shlitz was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Oct. 22 with Alan Jackson and Terry Reid, he will attend the CMA Awards on Nov. 8 and then Nov. 10 he is performing in the Main Room of Flora-Bama. The showcase is titled “An Evening with Don Shlitz/A Tribute to Larry Butler.” The proceeds will go to an established Larry Butler Memorial Music Fund at the University of West Florida. Over the past few years, the event has donated more than $50,000 to the fund. Tickets for the showcase are $20 at the door. Friday, Nov 17, Flora-Bama will be screening the movie “Tennessee Whiskey,” which is a documentary on Dean Dillon’s life, in the
Main Room at 2 p.m. The event is free. Later that night, Dean Dillon and Joe McBride, both Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame songwriters, will be performing in the Main Room. On Saturday, Nov. 18 from 2-6 p.m. Flora-Bama will be doing a memorial tribute to the songwriters that are, unfortunately, no longer with us. “That’s something we try to do every year to pay respects to people who played a big part to the Festival over the years,” Haynes said. Each year during the event, the Festival also holds a Songwriters’ competition with kids from Baldwin County. “We’ve always had a showcase at LuLu’s where we bring in over 200 school kids from Baldwin County and they all submit to perform songs and the songs get critiqued and there’s a winner declared,” Haynes said. “The winner gets a slot in the Songwriters’ Festival next year. This year, the City of Gulf Shores came on board as a sponsor and we’re moving the event from LuLu’s to the City of Gulf Shores Cultural Center and we’ll be able to have more kids. The Baldwin County Board of Education is involved, and LuLu’s will still cater the lunch. It’s from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.” “I just want to clarify that no conversation about the Songwriters’ Festival should take place where Joe Gilchrist is not given due credit,” Haynes said. “He founded the Festival and the fact that the Festival has such a place in his heart that he has continued it over the years to support it. He has sought to it and helped in every way imaginable. He has a love and appreciation for songwriters and we’re so blessed.”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 16 Beachin’ ● November 2017
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

Knowing what to keep and what to toss back
S
harks have been a fascinating topic of discussion for the young and old alike since the first Jaws movie hit the screen. How dangerous are they really? Common sense tells us not to swim near dark in the afternoon, avoid wearing shiny jewelry, don’t swim in a fish feeding frenzy and if you see a fin that’s not a dolphin, get out of the water. With all that said, sharks are great fun to catch whether large or small. They are fierce fighters, require special tackle like wire leaders and some are even good to eat unless they are trying to eat you. When fishing for shark, it’s important to know the laws of which ones you are allowed by law to retain. I was coming in from a charter recently when I was stopped at the dock by Marine Resource Enforcement officers. They ask what I had caught. My reply was, three small Spanish and two Atlantic Sharpnose sharks. Upon inspection, I was informed that the sharks were fine tooth shark. Pleading my case of innocence, I asked, “How do you tell the difference?” The Atlantic Sharpnose has white
Above: Bonnet Head shark; Right: Atlantic Sharpnose shark spots along the sides. If in doubt, cut the line or remove the hook if possible. The only two sharks that are allowed to be in possession are the Atlantic Sharpnose and Bonnet Head. All others must be a minimum of 53-inches. I was blessed with only a warning and considered it a learning experience. The very next day while fishing around the near Gulf rigs, we caught several large Spanish Mackerel, or so we thought. Upon further examination, they were juvenile King Mackerel, which look almost the same.
Note, both have yellow spots, but the Spanish has a gradual descending lateral line and black dorsal fin. The King line has a sharp drop midway and gray or white dorsal fin. It pays to know the rules to avoid fines. Enjoy the water but always be safe.

Jason Fobes
MUSIC INSTRUCTOR
J
ustin Fobes has a hand in many aspects of music. He takes pride in being a musician, a producer and a music instructor and having an obvious passion for all of his trades. Among one of his most rewarding jobs is being a music instructor for those eager and willing to learn the art of music. Fobes has had roots in music for as far back as he can remember. He officially began playing live shows and touring in 1989 when he was still in school and began performing at parties. He studied under another familiar musician to the area, Rebecca Barry, at Faulkner State. Under her study, Fobes learned the education side to music and put his theory to practice. “I began teaching music when I was working for MMI music in Mobile and Birmingham,” Fobes said. “Some of my customers would come in and ask me if they knew where they could take lessons, and I said I could teach them some things and that’s how it started.” To begin with, his biggest goal was to help his friends and that goal remains the same today. “Usually it’s someone I meet that comes out to one of my live performances and that’s the biggest way I get students,” Fobes said. “People 26 Beachin’ ● November 2017
see that I know what I’m doing and I get to talk to them and we arrange an appointment to get together. Some of my students in the past have gone on to become professional musicians.” Fobes teaches out of his studio in Perdido Key and makes house calls. He tries to fit into his students schedules and lessons usually last about 30 minutes. Fobes teaches guitar, bass and beginner piano and if you’re a student of Fobes’, prepare to have some homework. “All I require is a strong desire to learn,” Fobes said. “For example, Maddox is only six and some say that’s too young, but parents being closely involved really changes everything. I have no age limits.” The young and the old and the young at heart will all find an opportunity to learn under Fobes’ instruction. His willingness to teach and help his students reach their goals is shown throughout his enthusiastic music lessons. “I really enjoy seeing the lightbulb come on above peoples heads,” Fobes said. “They have that ‘Aha’ moment and realize that they understand what we’re talking about. They start to see how they can apply it to their practice
and play. That is extremely gratifying.” As for advice for a rookie musician willing to learn or a seasoned musician willing to expand, Fobes has his biggest tip of all. “The best advice I’d give anyone is don’t stop believing,” Fobes said.
“Continue with the fascination.” Fobes has gained many recognitions through his music and was honored in 2015 as the 2015 Nappie Award Winner for Best Jazz Musician. He has been a judge for Singing for Scholarships at the Annual Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores and was the emcee for the event this year. Currently, Fobes has another production project he is working on for The Children’s Miracle League. He is producing the official theme song for the Miracle League of Coastal Alabama, which he describes as a huge honor in his career. He is currently a member of the the Justin Fobes Band, Ole River String Band and the Magic Johnsons. He can be found performing every Sunday for brunch at Cobalt Restaurant and every Thursday at the Point Restaurant with Ole River String Band. To contact Justin, visit Justin Sable Fobes on Facebook, call 251-487-5994 or email justinfobes0@gmail.com.
