A stunning new home for the arts
8 Beachin’ December 2017
Coastal Arts Center is a jewel on Wolf Bay BY ALLISON MARLOW The new Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach, the city’s elegant and stunning crown jewel at the mouth of Wolf Bay, will host weddings, corporate retreats, and, elementary school-age art camp. Director Desiree Blackwell has no worries about little hands near the carefully crafted paintings and pottery. “Of course we keep an eye on them, but a few years ago it was raining during camp and we brought all 25 first and second graders into the old gallery for lunch. They were sitting almost on top of the art work,” she said. “They didn’t break a thing. They loved being that close and being able to enjoy it. We look forward to sharing this art with young campers again.” From young to old the city of Orange Beach loves its coastal artists. Now, at 10,000 sq. ft., there is room to give each stunning piece space to be admired. “This is a dream come true for our staff,” Blackwell said. “We worked out of a construction trailer for three years and watched as careful design plans were made, and Gates Construction brought this beautiful structure up out of the ground.” The city’s very first hotel sat on this location until three years ago. The boarding-house style hotel, built in 1923, was a touchstone for the local community and its proud history. The 11 bedrooms inside were home to the men who worked the turpentine mills. The building was accessible only by water until the 1940s when Canal Road was completed. After purchasing the property several years ago, planners worked to renew and rejuvenate the building but
the years had “Other art executives come taken their toll. In 2015, officials and see this and are amazed decided they our city dedicated such funds c o u l d n’ t overcome to this endeavor. vanities. More doors can be found in the bride’s dressing room, used as tabletops. Upstairs, the private meeting room features a recessed ceiling inlaid with heart pine flooring from the old hotel. It is centered above a beautiful custom made conference table. The space can be rented for corporate functions. This is also where the much of the center’s private, not for sale collection resides. A gorgeous, curved helical staircase leads to the upstairs balcony. The railing that leads skyward and dances across the balcony was designed by the project’s architect Jacky Barganier. The scene he created is unmistakable. The black rails bend and twist like sea oats on the shore creating a stunning backdrop to weddings held in the gallery below. No matter where you stand in the center, on the balcony or the main floor, the view from the two-story tall windows overlooking Wolf Bay are unparalleled. Outside there is a brick pathway and patio where many brides choose to host their ceremony. 10 Beachin’ ● December 2017
The entire project, nearly $2 million, was funded by the city of Orange Beach. Now, with the waiting and the work behind them, Blackwell said the staff is busy finding new ways to bring the community into the facility —
through exhibits, special events and classes. Almost every piece of artwork on display is for sale. “We have a great community feel here,” Blackwell said. “It’s sophisticated and gorgeous but not stuffy. We are all warm and welcoming.”

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me a copy of Lucy Buffett’s second book, “Gumbo Love.” The book features classic family recipes and stories.
On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me four delicate shells found on the beach. Winter is a great time to comb the empty beaches for gifts from the ocean: shells and sand dollars are often found along the Gulf Coast beaches. Take a quiet stroll and soak in the sun.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave me a closer look at the 8-inch Blakely rifles that Confederate troops used to defend Fort Morgan. BEACH ART
Glitter,
shine,
sparkle and sway Glass breathes life into Patrice Fishbein’s work BY ALLISON MARLOW Turn your head slightly and the mermaid appears to move. Turn again and her tail glistens. Each time you glance back, there is a different sparkle, a new curve to her thick, pink tail or sudden splash of water. Your eyes do not deceive you. This is the magic of Patrice Fishbein’s glass art. Fishbein, a multi-media artist, has spent decades perfecting a complicated technique that breathes the wind and sea into her pieces. The first question everyone asks, “How did you do that?” “It has taken a lifetime of different 34 Beachin’ ● December 2017
jobs to come together to create my work as it is today,” Fishbein said. “It has been an evolution of art and style, starting with the simplest of ideas to the most intriguing detail.” Fishbein starts simply by painting. Once her creation is complete, she adds sheets of glass, recycled glass, re-purposed and broken antique glass and shells. Each shard allows her to create subtle color changes on her canvas. Unlike some artists who flood their canvas with epoxy, Fishbein carefully places epoxy to create “movement, flair and sparkle.
“Epoxy seems to pull all of the elements together which creates the magic that inspires my art,” she said. “It’s a layering process both mentally and physically.” Fishbein is a 1976 graduate of the University of South Alabama’s art history program, and a Spanish Fort native. She raised her children and supported her husband in his dental business until he recently retired. Now, she says, it’s her time to shine. First and foremost, Fishbein is a painter. She has dabbled in stained glass as well as glass bead work. When she creates a painting, she produces a product line of the image on several mediums to include cards, purses, canvas bags, linen hand towels and silk scarves. Her goal is to have a wide span of price points so her art is affordable to everyone. That plan is working. Her work is available exclusively at Black Eyed Susie’s antique gallery in Lillian where her work is among the most popular, and most regularly sold items available. Fishbein works closely with gallery owner Susie Broxson to create displays. Often Fishbein said she is inspired by the antique furniture Broxson uses and builds a display from there working as many as six
hours a day in the studio to produce the stunning pieces. “The volume she can produce is amazing,” Broxon said. “It sells well because people can feel everything she does, not just see it.” Fishbein lives by the motto that “Art should be beautiful and magical all year, not just at
Christmastime.” At Black Eyed Susie’s, where sailboats appear to float across the canvas, and you can almost feel the drops of sea water as sand pipers flutter and flip in the sea spray, the magic is real. “The best part is someone walking in, falling in love with one of our displays of glass and taking a treasure home,” she said. “This takes me full circle from my college days as a designer and decorator.” December 2017 ● Beachin’ 35
