3 Simple Ways to Save

TIME AND MONEY DURING THE HOLIDAYS The holiday season is hectic. Between shopping for gifts, preparing for guests and decorating the home, it can sometimes feel as if there aren’t enough hours in the day or money in the bank to get it all done.

for them directly from your smartphone anywhere in the club. Once done shopping, all you have to do is show a digital receipt to an associate on the way out.

Here are some great ways to stress less and save more time and money during the most wonderful -- but busiest -- time of year:

At a time of year when it’s easy to over-spend, the app is also a useful holiday budgeting tool, keeping track of what you are spending while you shop. To download the app or learn more, visit SamsClub.com.

• Rethink Décor: Swap more costly flowers and wreaths for fresh fruit to create a festive feel without breaking the bank. Place lemons and limes in a clear bowl for a colorful centerpiece. Add cheer to doors by hanging a pomegranate from a ribbon. Use any of the extra citrus to garnish drinks. Add warmth to table settings by surrounding candles with pears and cranberries.

• Pick a Gift Theme: When possible, personalize presents for close family and friends, but pick a theme for the rest of your gift list. Scour sites, circulars and shelves for the best deal and then buy in bulk. Whether you choose pajamas, chocolate gift sets or hats and mittens, this tactic will also help cut down on multiple shopping trips and maximize your gift giving budget.

• Skip the Checkout Line: Technology is making shopping for gifts and entertaining essentials faster and more convenient. For example, the new Sam’s Club Scan & Go app lets you bypass the traditional checkout lane. Simply scan UPC codes on items in your cart and pay

The tasks and expenses that pile up during the holiday season can feel endless; but there are some simple strategies you can employ to make your yearend festivities less stressful and perhaps even more meaningful (StatePoint.)

Holiday ACTIVITIES FOR

THE FAMILY BY LAUREN NEWMAN

Hanging the mistletoe, watching your town’s annual Christmas parade, posing for pictures with jolly, old Saint Nick. There’s no shortage of activities for families to enjoy this holiday season. O Christmas Tree Most families kick off their Christmas with the ultimate decorating feat: putting up the tree. Whether you haul yours out of your attic year after year or you wander through a maze of fresh firs searching for the perfect tree to take home, it just doesn’t feel like Christmas until the tree is up and decorated. String it with popcorn or adorn it with heirloom glass ornaments. Whatever your style is what works. Made with Love Hosting a holiday party? Or maybe looking for gifts that have the perfect homemade touch? Start baking. More and more, people are going back into the kitchen rather than a store to put a labor of love and flour and sugar to give to friends, co-workers and loved ones as gifts. Bonus tip: A cookie-decorating afternoon is a great way for kids of all ages to get involved. And, thanks to the help of Pinterest, there are dozens of different ways to package them for that festive look. Glass jars for cookie mix wrapped in a bow? Fudge from your grandmother’s secret recipe packaged in red and green cellophane? Your “world-famous” Oreo balls put into holiday tins? The possibilities are endless. Traditions, Old and New Think about some of the things you look forward to experiencing each holiday, year in and year out. Is it watching Christmas Vacation and laughing at the same jokes like it’s the first time you’ve heard them? Is it Christmas shopping with your mother? Drinking eggnog? These are all things we can only do at one point in the year. Here are some other traditions maybe you haven’t thought of: • Elf on the Shelf: yes, it can be tricky for parents to keep this one up night after night for an entire month but kids get a big kick out of waking up each morning and finding out what mischief their “elf ” got into overnight. • Caroling: do you see groups of carolers nowadays? Don’t let this tradition fade out - get out there and sing! 22 Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide December 2016

• Christmas Eve church service: It doesn’t get more Christmas-y than a candlelight service on Dec. 24. • Looking at Christmas lights: The ever popular event. Packing your entire family into one car and riding around town looking for the best display of Christmas lights. If your lucky, you know of a house that has their lights timed to music, just be cautious of the traffic these houses tend to bring to the street. By now you’ve got a list in your head of things you plan to do with your family this season. And hey, even if you don’t get to do everything you planned, make sure you still take time to relax and enjoy the celebration and memories you’re making.

All Aboard the

ARCTIC EXPRESS

Christmas

FROM THE GARDEN

Gardeners do seem to be a proud bunch of what the garden produces all year long and they love to share. Christmas is a wonderful time to take an exploratory walk along the garden paths and gather snips of herbs, flowers, pods, nuts and greenery to lovingly fashion into thoughtful gifts that will leave friends and family marveling at your kind creativity. Herbs, flowers, leaves and even seeds, with just a bit of effort, can be turned into much appreciated gifts from the heart with little expense. Here are 12 quick and easy gift ideas from the garden that fortunate friends will love receiving. 1. Keepsake potpourri On that walk through the garden, gather dried flowers to add to petals previously saved from special occasions that have been tossed together over the years. To these, add pieces of herbs and fruits gathered from the garden and package it all in a pretty jar or bottle tied with a festive ribbon. This gift is sure to please romantic young girls and sentimental mothers alike. 2. Herbed and scented jellies and jams Of course, herbs and fruits are best enjoyed in season, but herbed jelly or jam on warm toast can do wonders for the start of a winter day. If you don’t care to make your own jelly or jam, don’t let that stop you. You can flavor store bought jams and jellies with 1/3 cup of your own freshly chopped herbs, adding that personal touch and turning common pantry items into tantalizing rosemary-apple jelly for glazing a ham or marmalade-mint jelly to spread summer bounty on winter toast. Homemade herb jellies are a great gift idea and make a flavorful seasoning addition to your own pantry.

3. Herbal sugars A sweet way to share your garden herbs is to make herbal sugars using dried herbs, flowers and foliage from outside. These add the elements of nature and fragrance to the holidays. Flavoring usual ingredients, such as sugar, with herbs can infuse baked goods such as cookies, cakes and biscuits with the fresh flavors of the herb garden. Simply select three or four sprigs of fresh herbs like lavender, mint, rosemary, sage or thyme and gently bruise the leaves with a spoon to release the oils. Add two cups of sugar into the herbs in 24 Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide December 2016

of

an airtight container and store for two weeks or so. This delicious herbal sugar can be used to flavor home baked goodies, iced tea or lemonade or homemade jellies. 4. Garden-imprinted candles Candle making can be a bit messy, but a ready made candle can be given a personal touch from the garden by melding leaves, flowers, ferns or herbs right into the wax. Select large, fat candles with enough surface area to be decorated. Begin by dipping the candle into a large saucepan of boiling water. Use tongs to dip the candle in and hold for one or two minutes, then remove. Place the warm candle on parchment paper and work quickly to impress your flowers or leaves into the softened wax on the sides of the candle. When you have the design that you want, re-dip the candle into the water to coat and seal the herbs onto the candle. Your lovely, special and natural gift is ready to be wrapped and given away. 5. Herb infused oils One of the most perfect ways to preserve fresh herbs is to make herbal oils. Herbs blended with oils are the perfect way to spice up any recipe and a batch can be whipped up in no time. When poured into decorative, shapely bottles, the flavored oils make a most impressive gift from your kitchen. Good choices for herbal oil infusion include basil, bay, chives, cilantro, dill, mint, oregano, rosemary, tarragon and thyme. Allow your chosen herbs to dry thoroughly before stuffing a sprig or two into your chosen bottles. Warm a light oil, such as sunflower, safflower, olive or peanut and pour over the herbs. Allow to sit out of sunlight for about a week before presenting your gift. Remind the receiver that these special homemade oils will be good for only two months or so. 6.Plant cuttings as party favors and place card holders If you will be inviting friends to a holiday party or dinner, this personal touch will dress up your table and then, taken home to dress up your friends’ homes. Gardeners can share a piece of their garden with guests by giving a rooted cutting from the yard or houseplants, such as coleus or ivy.

7. Herbal vinegars Flavored vinegars are as easy to create as pouring hot vinegar over herbs, edible flowers, chili peppers or whatever tasty bit remains in the garden. These flavorful vinegars can be used as salad dressings, sauces and intriguing appetizers. 8. Flavored vodka A homemade flavored vodka would make a delightful and unusual hostess gift. Try a lavender-rosemary infused vodka and basil would add a refreshing note. Simply pour a premium vodka over the herbs and seal tightly. Let stand in a cool dark place for three to five days. Strain the herbs, then bottle and store until ready to give. 9. Dried herbs and flower sachets The holidays are a time of scents filling the air. Your own lovingly created flower and herbal sachets will only enhance this seasonal delight. Dried flowers and herbs tucked into bags and pillows carry a fragrance that will carry the receiver back to the glory days of the garden. Simply purchase ready made mesh bags and fill them with dried flowers and herbs. Tie with a cheery bow and you have a charming gift that will pleasantly scent pillows or closets or shelves.

10. Homemade seasoning blends More often than not, herb gardeners are avid cooks. Mix up a batch of these blends and share it with a favorite recipe. Dried and stored herbs such as basil, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, lavender flowers and bay leaves can be melded into a delicious herbs de Provence and used to flavor soups or stews. 11. Evergreen herb and pinecone potpourri An aromatic pinecone potpourri can be gently heated with the addition of Christmas lights to infuse a whole room with the scent of pine. Place aromatic dried herbs such as sage, rosemary, lavender, lemon herbs or rose petals in a glass bowl and then nest the bowl in a string of white lights. They will warm the oils in the herbs and add a wonderful fragrance to the air. 12. Pass along seeds If you are a seed or pod saver, you have a wonderful gift opportunity. Make your own seed packets and use them as holiday cards, gifts, place cards or stocking stuffers. Lucky friends will treasure seeds from one of your favorite plants in your garden. So we see that with a little imagination, whatever remains in the garden can be included as personalized and treasured gifts from the heart and loving hands. Share a gift from your garden this holiday season.
