Let there be Light! By Whisper Edwards One of the best things about the holidays is the display of lights from house to house. Children and adults take immense joy from the sparkle of well-decorated yards. However, it can be easy to go overboard with holiday light displays. Below we offer some common do’s and don’ts to make your holiday light buying and decorating easy on you and those around you.
What you should not do:
Don’t forget about the cost. Be prepared for a higher bill than normal. All those lights on Vegas don’t come cheap and neither will your bill when you have been running excess power for a month. Go online and use an energy cost calculator to help you figure up price of a festive display. Don’t overload an extension cord or circuit breaker or use decorations, cords and lights meant for interior use. And don’t leave you lights plugged in all the time. It will cost more and is unnecessary. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of unplugging your lights, buy a timer. Don’t leave your lights and decorations outside after the holidays are over. It can cause you a lot of pain down the road when these forgotten cords strangle tree trunks causing possible tree removal or a fallen tree on
your house or car. Oops. Don’t pull your lights and decorations down. The same way you put decorations up is the same way you should take them down. It may take longer, but it is safer and less expensive than a fallen tree limb or broken light strands. Don’t disregard safety precautions. Take the time to do things safely and properly. If there is the tiniest chance that you could be putting yourself in unnecessary danger, don’t do it. Enough said. Don’t forget to check your lights and decorations before beginning to decorate your yard and home. Inspect your lights and decorations for signs of wear and tear and go ahead and replace anything that looks worn out. Don’t throw all your decorations in a box. Take the time to keep light strands separated and stored in a tangle-free way. This will save you time and money the next year. Also, store lights in a dark place to preserve the color. Don’t be Superman. If you need help, ask for it or hire someone to assist you. If you can’t do it or do not have the appropriate tools, do not attempt the task.
What you should do:
Plan before you begin decorating. It is easier and more efficient to string up lights and decorations if
you have a general idea of what you want. Take steps to measure and calculate the length and amount of lights you will need to avoid under- or over-purchasing. Less is more to avoid gaudy displays. Decorations are by nature meant to add value and interest to a space. If your yard is more lights and decorations than yard or house, you might want to rethink your display. Think: little black dress. Elegant, enhanced, and easy. That is how your display should be. And do not try to fit over-sized inflatables in a tiny yard. Use smaller decorations and decorate around those. It is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Keep your decorating deliberate. And please, no cartoon characters in the nativity scene with baby Jesus. That just isn’t right. Think about your neighbor. No one wants to lie in bed, tossing and turning because bright lights are blinking in their eyes. Think about how your lights and decorations will affect your neighbors. If your lights and decorations light up your house, that’s one thing, but if your display lights up your neighbor’s house, you are going to have a problem. Be considerate. Also, keep in mind most spectators will see your display while driving. Please do not make your decorations, lights, etc. too distracting
to drivers. It’s rude and hazardous. Include children. Have them help you and show them the proper and safe way to decorate. Remember that children will be playing outside so make sure decorations can not cause any harm to a child. Pets or wild animals may visit your yard as well, so keep that in mind in your decorating. Keep safety first. Decorating can be dangerous. Ladders, electricity, fire hazards, weather and more can all add up to a recipe for a Christmas in the hospital. Sounds like a great time, right? No! Practice ladder, fire, electric safety and please use common sense. Do not try to decorate your yard with an ice storm raging outside. Decorate inside your home and reschedule your outside decorations for a calmer, drier day. And use proper equipment meant for the outdoors. Never use nails or staples on wires or light poles as this can pose an electric hazard. Call an expert. If the thought of decorating your yard overwhelms you, don’t be afraid to hire a professional or ask for help from a family member, friend, or neighbor. If you are uncomfortable on a ladder, do not use one and get someone who is more confident to do so. Decorations aren’t worth stress or potential danger.
