Holiday Gift Guide 15
LET THERE BE LIGHT! By Whisper Edwards One of the best things about the holidays is the display of lights from house to house. Children and adults take immense joy from the sparkle of well-decorated yards. However, it can be easy to go overboard with holiday light displays. Below we offer some common Do’s and Don’ts to make your holiday light buying and decorating easy on you and those around you.
What you should not do:
• Don’t forget about the cost. Be prepared for a higher bill than normal. All those lights on Vegas don’t come cheap and 16 Holiday Gift Guide
neither will your bill when you have been running excess power for a month. Go online and use an energy cost calculator to help you figure up price of a festive display. • Don’t overload an extension cord or circuit breaker or use decorations, cords and lights meant for interior use. This is huge safety hazard, and no one wants an ash-gray or soot-black Christmas. It’s supposed to be white, you know? And don’t leave you lights plugged in all the time. It will cost more and is unnecessary. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of unplugging your lights, buy a timer.

year. Also, store lights in a dark place to preserve the color. Colored lights fade resulting in replacement. • Don’t be Superman. If you need help, ask for it or hire someone to assist you (or even do it for you while you enjoy some hot cocoa). As satisfying as it is to do something yourself, if you can’t do it or do not have the appropriate tools, do not attempt the task.
What you should do:

to lie in bed, tossing and turning because bright lights are blinking in their eyes. Think about how your lights and decorations will affect your neighbors. If your lights and decorations light up your house, that’s one thing, but if your display lights up your neighbor’s house, you are going to have a problem. Be considerate. Also, keep in mind most spectators will see your display while driving. Please do not make your decorations, lights, etc. too distracting to drivers. It’s rude and hazardous. • Include children. Have them help you and show them the proper and safe way to decorate. Remember that children will be playing outside so make sure decorations can not cause any harm to a child. Pets or wild animals may visit your yard as well, so keep that in mind in your decorating. • Keep safety first. Decorating can be
dangerous. Ladders, electricity, fire hazards, weather and more can all add up to a recipe for a Christmas in the hospital. Sounds like a great time, right? No! Practice ladder, fire, electric safety and please use common sense. Do not try to decorate your yard with an ice storm raging outside. Decorate inside your home and reschedule your outside decorations for a calmer, drier day. And use proper equipment meant for the outdoors. Never use nails or staples on wires or light poles as this can pose an electric hazard. • Call an expert. If the thought of decorating your yard overwhelms you, don’t be afraid to hire a professional or ask for help from a family member, friend, or neighbor. If you are uncomfortable on a ladder, do not use one and get someone who is more confident to do so. Decorations aren’t worth stress or potential danger.
