Holiday Gift Guide 9
NORAD Tracks Santa By Allison Marlow It was Christmas Eve, 2008. My then 6-year-old son was very concerned. His daddy was deployed to Iraq. He just knew Santa was going to visit him there. But, he also knew flying over that war-torn nation wasn’t safe, for anyone, even the most magical of elves. He was worried about Daddy. He was worried about Santa. He needed to be reassured. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD, had his back. We called NORAD’s Santa Tracking hotline. The agent on the other end listened patiently as my tot described, in great detail, his fears of Santa and his eight tiny reindeer meeting their demise over the desert landscape. The boy wanted details. He wanted to know how Santa would be protected and how fast, in fact, troops could get
there to save him. Military kids demand to know the nitty gritty. Then the agent said these magic words: “We have aircraft trailing Santa. We can see him. He’s safe.” My kindergartner was relieved. No. But wait. “What kind of aircraft?” he demanded. “F-16s. Lots of them,” was the reply. Phew. He thanked the agent and skipped off to bed with visions of sugar plums and America’s best and brightest tailing the man in red. NORAD has been reassuring tiny tots on Christmas Eve since 1955 when a little boy called the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to ask about Santa’s whereabouts. An advertisement in a local paper had misprinted the phone number to NORAD instead of a local department store Santa.
OLD TYME
Feed & Garden Supply Lawn care, garden needs, pet supplies & plants 19580 Greeno Rd. Fairhope, AL 928-1156 OLD FASHION VALUES & FRIENDLY SERVICE
On duty that night was Col. Harry Shoup, who has come to be known as the “Santa Colonel.” Shoup received numerous calls that night and rather than hang up, he had his operators find the location of Santa Claus and report it to every child who called. Thus began a tradition carried on by NORAD when it was formed in 1958. Today, through satellite systems, high-powered radars and jet fighters, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he makes his Yuletide journey around the world. Every year on Dec. 24, 1,500 volunteers staff telephones and computers to answer calls and e-mails from children (and adults) from around the world. Live updates are provided through the NORAD Tracks Santa website (in seven languages), over telephone lines, and by e-mail to keep curious children and their families informed about Santa’s whereabouts and if it’s
time to get to bed. Each year, the NORAD Tracks Santa website receives nearly nine million unique visitors from more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Volunteers receive more than 140,000 calls to the NORAD Tracks Santa hotline from children around the globe. This year, children and the young-at-heart are able to track Santa through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. To follow us on any of these websites, type in @noradsanta into the search engine and start tracking. NORAD Tracks Santa has become a magical and global phenomenon, delighting generations of families everywhere. To track Santa with your children on Christmas Eve, visit www.noradsanta.org.
