Six things to help evergreens through winter By Melinda Myers Prepare your evergreens now before winter weather takes its toll on your boxwood, camellias and rhododendrons. Winter wind, sun, frozen soil, snow and ice can wreak havoc on our plants, especially evergreens. Water plants, especially evergreens and new plantings thoroughly before the first hard freeze in preparation for drier winter conditions. Evergreens continue to lose moisture throughout the winter even when the landscape appears dormant. Keep the hose handy and water thoroughly when the soil is dry. Winter watering as needed prevents yellow and brown needles and leaves on evergreens. Apply a layer of mulch to the soil under and around trees and shrubs or freshen existing mulch. A two- to three-inch layer of woodchips or shredded bark insulates roots from temperature extremes, conserves moisture, suppresses weeds during the growing season and improves the soil as it breaks down in the future. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk of trees and stems of shrubs. Shelter evergreens from winter winds and sun that increase moisture lost through evergreen needles and leaves. Broadleaf evergreens like rhododendrons and boxwoods are most susceptible and benefit from protection when planted in exposed locations. Create an attractive winter shelter with one of the commercially available winterizing products or build your own. Use a bit of decorative fencing or recycle a locally grown Christmas tree to cast a bit of shade and block the wind. Christmas tree windbreaks also add greenery to the winter landscape and shelter for visiting birds. Be prepared to cover tender plants when extreme cold temperatures are in the forecast. Holiday spending in Alabama expected to exceed $12.4 billion Submitted by Alabama Retail Shoppers in Alabama should spend about $362 million more during the holidays this year than last year. During the holiday shopping months of November and December, Alabamians will buy more than $12.4 billion in goods, based on the Alabama Retail Association’s prediction of taxed sales for those months. That represents a 3 percent increase beyond the $12 billion spent in the 2018 holiday shopping period. That state projection lines up with the national holiday forecast, which calls for growth between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent throughout the country. Through September of this year, Alabama averaged 5 percent growth in regular sales tax collections each month over the same month last year. When you add in what Alabama has collected in sales taxes from out-of-state, onlineonly retailers that growth
jumps to almost 11.5 percent in total taxed sales through September. However, in the prior two years, Alabama’s taxed sales during the holiday shopping period has grown an average of 2.75 percent. This will be the second holiday shopping season with most remote sellers remitting sales taxes through Alabama’s Simplified Sell-
ers Use Tax program and economic nexus rule. It will be the first with sales tax collections remitted by marketplaces that collect for third-party vendors. Alabama Retail Association’s 3 percent holiday growth prediction is for all holiday taxed sales, including those from remote sellers. Taxed holiday sales in
2018 in our state totaled $12,069,764,995.28, a jump of 2.66 percent over 2017 holiday sales, according to numbers provided by the Alabama Revenue Department. The Alabama Retail Association urges shoppers to Shop Alabama throughout the year, especially during the holiday shopping period.

According to History.com the term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia, but it didn’t have much to do with shopping. It was the term the police there used to describe the gridlocking traffic caused in the city the day after Thanksgiving when football fans swarmed the streets to attend the annual Army-Navy football game held there. In the 1980s retailers picked up the term to describe the massive shopping frenzy that swept the nation annually on the same day. Since many workers had the day after Thanksgiving off, retailers offered deep discounts to sway them into beginning their holiday shopping and therefore pushing annual sales numbers, “into the black.”
Cyber Monday kicked off in 2005 as a way for online retailers to encourage shoppers to browse and purchase from the comfort of their own home. Those online shops needed a way to compete with Black Friday and move shoppers away from brick and mortar locations and into cyberspace. It seems to have worked. In 2018, Cyber Monday sales hit $7.9 billion in the US, a new record. That same year Black Friday’s sales totaled $6.2 billion, also a record.

Or cover tender plants with old sheets or blankets before damaging temperatures arrive and remove them whenever temperatures have warmed. As the seasons change, animal habits can also change. Install fencing, apply repellents or enlist scare tactics to reduce the risk of damage from hungry animals. Applying wildlife protection before critters start feeding increases your chance of success. Monitor plantings for damage, adjust as needed and con-
sider using a combination of animal protections. Delay major pruning until the worst of winter weather has passed. The inner needles and leaves of evergreens have been sheltered by the outer layer of growth. Removing the outermost growth in fall exposes the tender inner growth to the drying winter
