March brings an interesting mix of beach patrons to our area. Most of the snowbirds are spending their last few beach days with us, while the spring breakers are just arriving. Fortunately, there are many events at the beach for both types of visitors. If you like music and art, this is the month for you to visit the beach. The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach welcomes back the Annual Festival of Art and the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance celebrates it’s first annual Ballyhoo event, a celebration of art and culture. For those looking for more water focused events, The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show begins March 17 and invites all boat lovers to come view and experience this annual event. Get the latest updates on what’s trending at the beach from a few of our local fashion experts and retailers and much more inside this issue! I’ll see you there in my beach chair,

FOR THE SEASON AT THE BEACH BY DESTINY BROWN destiny@gulfcoastmedia.com photos by Mark Robinson

It’s time to put away the long sleeves and jackets and take out your spring and summer collection, or shop for a brand new one. March marks the beginning of spring, which brings a new stock of seasonal merchandise to all of our local boutiques. While at the beach, there are some items you just can’t do without. We asked a few of our local retailers about the upcoming trends of the season and what’s in style for beach days and night outings. Use this guide as a fashion check list before heading out on your beach adventure. If you’re off the beach for the day or looking for a more appropriate day look for exploring the Island, it’s helpful to know what’s in style. Take a few tips from our experts in retail on what’s trending this spring season. “Chambray wide leg pants, suede sandals, midi and T-shirt dresses are the perfect line up for spring and summer outings,” said Mary Lou Roszkowski, owner of 10 Beachin ● March 2016

Geez Louise boutique in Orange Beach. “Relaxed T-shirt dresses come in multiple solid styles and are comfy, cozy and quite versatile.” As for the night look, don’t be afraid to dress it up a little bit. “Adding a classic sandal wedge and a long pendant necklace can turn this beachy look into night time, outto-dinner fashion,” Roszkowski said. “Usually we find a really solid trend every season, but this time I don’t think we necessarily have one which is kind of interesting since it’s all over the place,” said Terry Woodard, owner of Bungalows. Woodard recently returned from a fashion market held in Las Vegas, and is well updated on the trends of the season. It seems a few styles are building on last year’s popularity. gulfvisitorguide.com

“We’re seeing a lot of bohemian types of things that are still popular,” Woodard said. “Eclectic things that are still in trend.” Bold prints are still a popular, and fashionable. Arguably the most important accessory for any evening outing at the beach (or anywhere else,) is jewelry. Springtime brings in a brand new look to the jewelry in the local boutiques and retail stores. “We’re working on our jewelry line and a new jewelry line will be coming out. We’re getting a lot of popular brand new lines,” Woodard said. “We’ll have Pandora and Alex and Ani among others.” “We also carry a new local line called Victoria Lynn. It’s kind of a blingy line that is already gaining popularity.” There are ways to pair your jewelry with your outfit to make it appear more organized and put together. “Our tasseled long and short beaded necklaces of druzy gulfvisitorguide.com

crystals in multiple colors like peach and turquoise are trending this season and adds to your personal flair,” Roszkowski said. “Stacking tasseled beaded bracelets keeps it fresh.” While heading down to the beach, you can keep your stylish vibe. Here are a few tips and necessities to look trendy in the sand. Bringing along a floppy hat helps to protect your face and eyes from the sun. Luckily, they’re also extremely stylish again this year. “We just got some yesterday and it’s more than we ever had,” Woodard said. “They are still very hot items from last year.” Bungalows carries special hats with UV protection, which is a plus for someone looking for a little extra safety. It’s all about safety when it comes to the little ones. Wearing hats or bonnets is a safe way to keep the harsh March 2016 ● Beachin 11

sun rays from a babies delicate skin. However, never substitute these adorable hats for sunscreen. Use both! A large hat can enhance your beach experience. It allows you to keep your shade and avoid the squinting glare from the sun. “Floppy hats are always a great look in the fresh breezes of the Gulf and sunny days on the beach,” Roszkowski said. It can be difficult to power through the stretch of sand that leads to the beach. Make it easier on your feet by choosing flip-flops or sandals. You’ll also be thankful for your shoes when walking on the hot pavement of the parking lots! “We carry a wonderful selection of classic sandals and flip-flops including name brands like Jack Rogers, Dolce Vita, Chocolat Blu in unique fun styles, “ Roszkowski said. “Geez Louise has styles and brands that help you sink your feet into the cool white sands of the coast.” OTHER ITEMS IN STYLE FOR THE BEACH: ■ SMALL PURSE FOR ITEMS Who wants to carry around a heavy purse full of items to the beach or beachside venues when all they need are a few important things? Think about investing in a small clutch or crossover purse so that you can easily locate your necessary items and it won’t be such a burden on your beach load. 12 Beachin ● March 2016

■ SWIM SUIT AND COVERUP For tanners and swimmers, the swim suit is probably the most important item to pack while traveling to the beach. Even if you never take off your cover up, you’ll want to enjoy the sand and the water as it’s best. Never forget a swim suit for the kiddos. Baby pools are located at many condos at the beach, and with a little adult supervision, they’d love their toes in the Gulf water also! ■ COOLER / YETI PRODUCTS Keep your drinks and other cold items cool with the popular YETI products. Offering a variety of merchandise including coolers and beer sized tumblers, these products are known to sell out quickly. “One thing that is great for the beach is the YETI tumblers,” Woodard said. “For spring break, w e ’ l l see a lot more of those products coming in. We’re really building our YETI products and we’re excited about that.” ■ BEACH BAG • If you want to keep up with all of your things in one place at the beach, invest in a beach bag. Offered at most of the boutiques and beachside retailers in the area, stuff your towel, water and sunscreen all into one secure bag. This necessity becomes even more useful when it carries a built-in cooler. • “Accessorize with huge totes or insulated cooler bags to make sure you go prepared to the beach,” Roszkowski gulfvisitorguide.com

said. “This year, Scout, Lilly Pulitzer and Vera Bradley totes and coolers come in a spectacular variety of great patterns and colors.” ■ SUNGLASSES • Whether you’re squinting from the reflection on the water or covering your eyes from the sun rays at the beach, sunglasses are a summer necessity. There are many choices and many locations to purchase sunglasses here on the Island. Breakline is a brand of local sunglasses that put a new take on this beach necessity for outdoorsmen. Breakline founding partners share a passion for fishing and the outdoors. The friends sought to create a unique, high quality brand of polarized sunglasses that met the important important demands of any angler, including: durability, comfort and visual performance. All lenses have coatings to enhance your vision and product durability. Boutique sunglasses are a more stylish choice for those looking for fashion. The ever popular aviator and wayfarer type sunglasses seem to be a big seller again this year and bright color schemes are popular. ■ TOWEL ■W ATERPROOF CELL PHONE CASE OR OTHER PROTECTIVE SHIELD ■ SUNSCREEN Thanks to Bungalows, Geez Louise and Breakline sunglasses for donating the items used in our photo shoot. Also thanks to our models!

“It’s Off The Chart” that is how the Wharf Boat and Yacht Show has been described by exhibitors and attendees alike. Each spring brings about the beginning of boating season and also one of the most popular and well-attended events on the Gulf Coast, The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show. Every square foot of exhibitor space, dockage and on-land boat display space has been sold out for months in anticipation of the premiere boat show on the Gulf Coast. A boat show with more than 600 boats on display, worth more than $90 million dollars is a special event. Put those 600 hundred boats on display at The Wharf in Orange Beach and you have an extraspecial event. If those 600 boats were lined up end-to-end, they would stretch for more than three and a half miles! With shopping, dining, nightlife and a full-service marina, The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show provides something for the entire family. The Wharf Boat and Yacht show is also a major economic force in Baldwin County. With more than $30 million dollars in boat sales in the last two years, this show brings out the best in boat manufacturers, dealers and buyers. “Hands down, this show is the best,” said Forrest Long of Bluewater Yacht Sales in Mobile and Orange Beach. “The collective product on display brings out serious buyers and all of the dealers move a lot of inventory while at The Wharf.” The red carpet is rolled out as the show kicks off Thursday, March 17th at 2:00 p.m. with the exclusive VIP-only preview party, ‘Stars over Alabama.’ This can’tmiss ‘see and be seen’ signature party that has become the hottest boat show ticket of the year. “The VIP Event is my favorite day of the boat show,” said annual boat show attendee Marty Kennedy of Daphne, AL. “It’s great to walk that red carpet and then see all the boats before the show gulfvisitorguide.com

even opens.” Friday, March 18th is ‘Locals Day’ with discounted tickets for just $7 for everyone with a local ID at the gate. Show hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. “Locals are so much a part of The Wharf that we wanted to give all of our local friends a special day at the show,” said Scott Burt, President of The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show. The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show is the only boat show in the country with a day dedicated to the ladies. On Saturday, March 19th ladies will be pampered with special treatment from the time they arrive until they leave. Ladies enter on the Red Carpet at the Main Street entrance and can register for an exclusive ‘For Ladies Only Prize Package.’ One lucky lady will win two tickets to see Chris Young at the Wharf Amphitheater, a $500 Lucca gift card and $200 Wharf Marina Outfitters Store clothing package. Also, there will be a swimwear photoshoot with Access Magazine, fashion and make-up consultants on hand to offer expert advice and the annual fashion show from Lucca is at 1:00 PM on Saturday on the Bridgewalk. The show concludes on Sunday with ‘Lagniappe Sunday’ from 10 am to 5 pm with Cajun music, food and fun. Throughout the four-day event, there will be fishing and boating seminars, kids art classes as well exhibitor displays from world’s best boating, fishing, watercraft, marine electronics and accessory companies. There will also be live music daily and the Triple Crown Fighting Chair Challenge raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. while visiting the beach Clean, safe beaches – that is the message behind the Leave Only Footprints campaign, which is a joint effort by the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. As the cities step up their efforts as the busy spring and summer seasons approach, initial response to the 18 Beachin ● March 2016

program has been positive, according to tourism officials. “Our loyal visitors love our beaches, and it’s the main reason they come back again and again,” Herb Malone, president and CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, the organization tasked with promoting the gulfvisitorguide.com

destination to those visitors, said. “With the help of our local industry partners and residents, we’ve begun to get the word out about the new program. “We know, particularly the requirement to remove all items from the beach daily, the changes will take some education on our part. We also know the reasons behind the changes are good ones and are confident our visitors will appreciate the long-range goals and long-term positive results.” The Leave Only Footprints initiative requires beachgoers to take their belongings with them each night. Removing beach toys, tents, umbrellas and chairs keeps beach gear out of the way of endangered species such as the nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings, and out of the Gulf of Mexico. It also clears the way for emergency and maintenance crews who must navigate the beach. Similar initiatives are already in place along coastal communities in the Florida Panhandle. In 2015, both cities piloted similar programs, stepping up education efforts with representatives on the beach, educating beachgoers about best practices while enjoying the natural resources. Still, thousands of cubic yards of abandoned debris, including tent frames, umbrellas and chairs, were collected last year. “Every guest spends weeks and months planning their trip to the beach, and they all have visions of that first

glimpse of the pristine beach in the morning,” Michelle Nelson, chief operating officer of one of the largest rental management companies on the island, said. “They deserve to have that whether they are the first set of footprints on the beach at the beginning of the season or the last set later in the year. I know our guests will appreciate and will benefit from this effort.” The updated ordinances in each city require that any equipment and personal items be removed from the beach after sunset each day. Any items not removed will be collected and discarded. Keeping the beach clean for future visitors is an upshot of the Leave Only Footprints policy, which includes other safety and sustainability elements, as well. Glass containers and excessive digging are also prohibited, and holes dug should be refilled before leaving the beach. In addition, loud music is prohibited on the beach, all in the hope of preserving the safety, peace and beauty of the Alabama Gulf Coast. The cities are working with Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism and local industry partners to implement a complete communications effort to let the public know about the new rules. The program is intended to be fully in place prior to spring 2016. Follow along with the Leave Only Footprints initiative on Facebook (http://gsob.co/1PT9cmF) and get more information on the program website at CleanIsland.org.

Spring is just around the corner and that sets the stage for another year of preparation to fulfill our fishing dreams. F irst of all, we must make sure our boat and trailer is it tip top condition. • batteries charged • engine serviced • bilge and live well pumps in working order • tires aired and wheels greased Next is to check our tackle. • reels lubed, • rod eyes good • a supply of hooks, sinkers, corks, dip nets, cast nets and tackle ready for action A few other things to check before hitting the boat ramp: • Be sure to check your VHF radio and have a PLB (personal locater beacon) on board. • Check life jackets, first aid kit and any other safety equipment you may need in case of an emergency. • Be sure to have current fishing license and know the most recent fishing regulations which seem to constantly change. Contact marine resources office to get the latest on the Alabama 9 mile decision for reef fish only. Mistakes in all these areas can be quite costly. Now that all the necessary details of preparation have be completed, what’s biting? Sheepshead One of the easiest species to find and catch is Sheepshead. Fish around any piers, gulf or bay rigs or other structure that will grow barnacles, which are a favorite food for these striped fish. Scraping barnacles from structure to chum will often trigger a feeding frenzy. Remember the limit is 10 per person per day.

hooked on fishin with Phil Dortch 30 Beachin ● March 2016

Cobia It’s also about time for the Cobia migration coming from the east. Keep your ears open for any word from Florida fisherman regarding a Cobia catch. They won’t be far behind. Favorite baits are live eel, or any other live bait fish you can find that time of year. Cobia will also hit a variety of artificial baits. The key is to spot them cruising near the surface, often close to the beach. A boat with a tower is ideal but not entirely necessary. Also good sunglasses are vital. When you are lucky enough to have a hookup, the decision is often whether to use a large net or a gaff. I have lost several large Cobia with poor gaff attempts. A large net seems to calm the fish and gives you an opportunity to determine whether it’s a keeper size or not. The legal size for Alabama state water is 33 inches FL gulfvisitorguide.com

and 2 bag limit per person. The same applies for federal waters, which to be safe is still 3 miles for Alabama, 9 miles for Florida. If you decide to gaff a green Cobia, have a bat ready to help prevent damage to your boat or crew. Snapper and Triggerfish If you decide to fish offshore for some of the smaller snapper like Vermilion, often known a beeliners, Lane or Black Snapper, be sure to know the current regulations. Triggerfish season has been open for all of January and early February, but the season was closed last year in February, so check with current regulations before bringing any home. ifferent rigging and bait is required for smaller bottom D fish. Follow these easy steps. 1. Use something like a 30 pound mono cut about 4 feet long 2. Tie a 4 inch loop at one end to attach a bank sinker heavy enough to sink depending on depth and current 3. Slide the loop through the sinker hole then loop it around the entire sinker. This allows you to easily change sinker size as needed. 4. Come up above the sinker loop about one foot and tie another 4 inch loop,

5. Come up another foot and tie another 4 inch loop. Attach the desired hook to the two loops same as was done with the sinker. This allows you to easily change hooks if necessary. 6. Tie a swivel to the final end of your mono. Without attaching any hooks or sinkers, you can make up a supply of these mono rigs, roll up and tape or clip each one and store in a sandwich bag ready for use. When fishing for Triggerfish, if in season, or beeliners, I like to use squid strips cut into small pieces rather than whole squid. Also carry along some live pinfish. You never know when a nice Grouper or Amberjack may be lurking. Amberjack size limit changed to 34 inch as of January 4, 2016. Marine Resources has an extensive free list of hundreds of reefs, wrecks and other structure throughout our Gulf waters. They also provide coordinates for pyramids in three sections out of Perdido Pass within 3 miles. Looking forward to another exciting fishing season. Plan your work and work your plan. Be safe. Remember to obey the rules and get home safe. Teach a kid to fish and create memories that will last a lifetime. Capt. Phil , 251-223-3682 islandwestcharters@yahoo.com islandwestcharters.com

FLAVORS ANCHOR BAR BY JOHN MULLEN johnm@gulfcoastmedia.com

34 Beachin â—? March 2016

gulfvisitorguide.com

Just because the menu at the Anchor Bar and Grill isn’t, let’s say, extensive, doesn’t mean there’s not a variety of unique tastes coming from its cozy kitchen. Actually, the short but intense menu is the main reason there’s always a variety of tantalizing tastes at the new restaurant. “We call it elevated bar food or bar food just done really, really well,” said Chef Jonathan Kastner, the restaruants head chef. “We want to outsource correctly and make all of our techniques such that we make some really good food. “Really fun place, fun food, fun environment.” The boat-shaped bar sits atop the dock at Hudson Marina in Orange Beach and is co-owned by Kastner and Hudson Marina owner Rodney Jones. Kastner and long-time girlfriend Sarah Arceneaux came to Orange Beach in August to help with the opening of the new restaurant. The Louisiana natives came from Lafayette where Kastner helped start the Brick and Spoon concept including developing the menu. On that job he met Eric Beech, the local Brick and Spoon owner, who made him aware of the opportunity at Hudson Marina. “When we first came up we initially came up just to write a menu,” he said. “When we got here we were like ‘this place is awesome, it’s really cool.’ We were really excited whenever we got the opportunity to actually stay here, move here and run the place and kind of make it our own.” Kastner looked at what are staples of bar food and gave them an Anchor Bar twist. Take the bar’s “nachos.” They are actually tater tots covered up with brisket that is smoked in house. Add pickled red onions, cotija, sour cream, tomato jam, fresh jalapenos and the coup de grace: a sunny side up egg. Regulars – there are already regulars – like to cut the egg up, stir up the whole thing and dig in. “We try to simplify it down to the six items we thought about when we thought about bar food,” Kastner said. “For us that’s nachos, tacos, hamburger, something in a bun and wings and salad. That’s what we focus on and by only doing those we are really able to fine tune them and do everything really properly. The sandwich is a Cuban sandwich with tobacco smoked pork, honey ham, B&B pickles, Havarti and dijonaise in a pressed French loaf. Want tacos? How about duck confit tacos served with sweet potato puree, LA Hot Sauce, roasted tomato, cotija, charred jalapeno cream and Craine Creek lettuce. For a salad, in the Lyonnaise Salad the Craine Creek lettuce is joined by Meat Mart bacon, herb roasted red potatoes tossed in gulfvisitorguide.com

an apple cider viginarette with a poached egg topper. The burger is half a pound served on brioche, topped with Havarti, Craine Creek lettuce, Duke’s mayo, Anchor Steam Mustard, hot sauce, roasted tomato and a sunny side up egg. He’s even got special wings with a unique Memphis hot sauce that’s above average and different all at once. It all sounds creative, but the six stars of the menu, while creative, allow Kastner to really explore new tastes with the frequent chalkboard specials. “We rotate the menu a lot and it gives us that ability to create,” he said. “It also gives us the ability to run a lot of specials because we only have five or six items on the menu we can run as many specials as we’re capable of running.” He takes pride in using locally sourced items and incorporating those into specials. Most afternoons during opening – Anchor currently operates 3-9 p.m. - you find Kastner digging some blues from the radio as his mind races with thoughts of that night’s surprise. And handing out samples to staff and any early customers to gauge how he did. He generally nails whatever he has in mind. One day a pork belly slider was offered up and requested as a regular menu item by just about everybody who tried one. Another a vanilla bean panna cotta. Still another some barbeque lamb ribs. “That’s what makes our jobs fun,” he said. “Everybody knows the restaurant business can be very tedious and you make the same stuff over and over and over. “For us being able to be creative on a daily basis and utilize all this stuff around us — the fish, the shrimp from my shrimpers the pigs and beef I get from my farmers. I’m able to showcase that stuff because we’re so small. I’m able to do a lot of different things with specials.” Some of the other recent offerings from the chalkboard specials included the George Family Farm lamb ribs with Tin Roof Brewing Company Coffee Porter BBQ sauce, smoked duck flatbreads, George Family Farm beef, pork and lamb chili topped with local creole garlic sour cream and Havarti, smoked duck, chicken and sausage gumbo, tacos on Taco Tuesday made with brisket, steak, shrimp, pork, duck, Conecuh sausage or smoked chicken, a Hanger steak sandwich and a George Family Farms meatball sub with beef pork and lamb. On wing Wednesday wings are 50 cents and added to the Memphis sauce are ones created that afternoon by Kastner and staff. A recent offering included garlic parmesan, lemon pepper, honey sriracha and sweet satsuma. On Tuesdays the tacos are just $2, $3 for the duck. March 2016 ● Beachin 35

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

gulfvisitorguide.com

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

April 16 The Waterway Village Zydeco & Crawfish Festival boils up a beaucoup (Cajun for a lot) of fun on Saturday, April 16. Sink your teeth into some hot, juicy, lip-smacking crawfish while dancing to the infectious rhythms of some of the best Zydeco bands from around the South. There will be crawfish races, arts and crafts vendors, and children’s activities. If that’s not enough, you’ll have the chance to work up an appetite with the 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Run beginning at 8:00 a.m., starting at Waterway Village next to Tacky Jacks Gulf Shores. Then after the race, stay for free beer and refreshments! Part of the proceeds go to a local animal rescue, Furrever Homes. For race information, visit harleysports.com. The pots will begin boiling at 10 a.m. and we’ll laissez les bons temps rouler (let the good times roll) all day long with Zydeco sounds grooving until 6 p.m.
