Family Fun

AT THE BEACH

By Destiny Brown

Get the entire family involved in your next vacation to the beach. Whether it’s a sailboat excursion on the Gulf, a scenic zip-line tour or an intense game of putt-putt golf or laser tag, the opportunities to have a great time with your family are endless here at the beach. The days and nights are filled with entertainment that will make it impossible to have a boring family vacation.

On the water... While some vacationers come to the beach to tan in the sand

or shop at the boutiques, others come to get out on the water. If getting out on the water is on your to-do list for this family vacation, be sure you know all of the options available. There are many chances to kayak, paddle board, swim or take a dolphin cruise. Or you can take the Kayak Adventure and Snorkel trip with Sail Wild Hearts and do them all at once. Located at the Perdido Beach Resort Marina in Orange Beach, Wild Hearts takes a variety of sailing adventures out on its 53foot catamaran sail boat. All of Sail Wild Hearts trips are family friendly, but one of the favorite family sails is The Kayak Adventure and Snorkel Sail. 8 Beachin’ ● July 2016

“The Kayak Adventure and Snorkel Sail is a three-hour local afternoon sail that goes into the Gulf and circles back to an Island to anchor,” Debbie Sims, public relations, marketing, advertising and booking for Wild Hearts, said. “Then we put in the stand-up paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, kayaks, and let everybody enjoy all of the water sports.” All ages can find something special about the boat. There’s comfortable seating for onlookers and there’s a great tanning area in the front of the boat for those looking to catch some rays. “There’s something for everyone,” Sims said, “We also let the kids take a turn at the wheel with the Captain. And we have a rod n’ reel on the back to catch and release fish.” Coolers and food are welcome on board. Wild Hearts offers many more sail trips such as the Dolphins and Angels Sailing Adventure, sunset cruises, private and corporate charters, and more. Book your sailing adventure today at sailwildhearts.com or call 251-981-6700. Also specializing in water sports is a new addition to Orange Beach, the Caribe Marina. Established in February 2016, the Caribe Marina offers everything from parasailing to dolphin cruises to Jet Ski and boat rentals and more.

“The Caribe Marina has set itself up to be the prime tourist marina spot down here,” Chris Logel, general manager of Caribe Marina and Watersports, said. “It’s a fantastic place for all of your watersport desires. If there’s fun to be had in Orange Beach on the water, we connect people with that.” The Caribe Marina strives to exceed the expectations of an ordinary experience out on the water. “We’re not looking just to provide someone with a Jet Ski rental and send them out the door, we want to exceed their expectations,” Logel said. “We provide mango scented hand towels, complimentary water and fresh fruit so it’s really trying to take the experience the customer expect and go beyond that.” If you don’t have a boating license, no worries. According to Alabama Laws, anyone over 18 years old with a driver’s license can operate a jet ski or boat. You have to be 21 years old to rent. “We really do have something for everybody,” Logel said. “Families like to go on the dolphin cruises and on our cruises, we guarantee dolphin sightings. We also have different types of fishing. Inshore is closer and it’s more comfortable for a family with smaller kids who still want the joy of catching that first fish. or those looking for more thrills, we’ve got jet skis they can rent and go out. We cover it all for the entire family.” If you want to have a more deep-water experience, deep sea fishing can be a great time to spend with your family. The trips can last hours, which gives plenty of time to make some memories while reeling in the big one. Charter boats usually offer a catch and release option or you can take your catch home.

“Ziplining at the GAC is a thrilling experience for the young and old,” Chase Brown, photo manager of Gulf Adventure Center, said. “Incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Shelby, and Gulf State Park will take your breath away as our high-flying ziplines get your adrenaline pumping. Nervous or skeptical participants oftentimes get the biggest thrill of anyone on our course when they go a little bit outside of their comfort zones, and having a few family members there for encouragement is always a great bonding experience.” Guests must be at least 8 years old and weigh a minimum of 65 pounds and a maximum of 265 pounds. “Participants can expect to see beautiful views of the Alabama Gulf Coast from vantage points that you won’t find anywhere else on the island,” Brown said. “Be prepared for a light workout as you climb each tower to gain your elevation for the next zip.” Each tour is accompanied by two trained guides who lead participants throughout the course. “Family members will ‘stage’ at the top of each tower as the group zips down the lines one at a time, so there’s plenty of time to chat, admire the scenery together, and enjoy each other’s company,” Brown said. “Our final zip is a dual line that guests zip down side by side on a ‘tandem’ run. Our professional photo staff will capture great shots of the group’s experience for optional viewing and purchase.” Be sure to check out the Hummingbird Ziplines at the Gulf Adventure Center at 21101 State Hwy 135 in Gulf Shores across from Gulf State Pier.

ordinary, check out the Gulf Coast Escape Room. If you think you have what it takes to crack codes and solve puzzles to escape from a locked room in 60 minutes, the Gulf Coast Escape Room in Gulf Shores is just for you. This real-life escape game makes participants communicate and use elements of the room to solve puzzles and find clues in order to escape. The Escape Room offers three scenario rooms; The Doll Room, Zombie Autopsy and the newest addition, Stop the Oil Spill. “If you like scary, the doll room is for you,” owner, Michelle Egly said. “With over 300 dolls in it, the room is red lit and you have to use black light flashlights to get through. It has a 50/50 escape rate. The Zombie Autopsy is the most difficult room with a 20 percent escape rate. In the room, you try to figure out the cure to the virus before you become a zombie. It’s everyone’s favorite if they like a challenge.” The Oil Spill Room is based on the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill. Participants figure out how to stop the oil spill before it gets out of control. The rooms are for all ages. “We’ve had as young as 4 and as old as 87,” Egly said. “It’s something that the entire family can do together. This is something that grandma and grandpa can do with the kids and be just as interactive and just as important as the kids.” Gulf Coast Escape Room tests your wits, skill and team work and is a great bonding experience to share with the family. There’s nothing like watching your kids learning and come up with solutions and to see how intelligent they are. It helps the parents a lot to see how their kids think. by 701 Gulf Shores Parkway in Gulf Shores. Hiding off Highway 59 in Gulf Shores, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, houses more than 500 animals in its facilities. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo began operating as an Alabama non-profit corporation in 1991. They are the only non-profit sales tax paying business in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The Zoo has grown to be one of the largest family attractions in the area, and draws in hundreds of families a day who are welcome to interact with the animals. The Zoo offers education programs and encounters with some animals. Onlookers are invited to play with and feed lemurs, sloths, kangaroos and tamanduas, and much more. “Each year, we’ve added something different and unusual for people to stop by for,” Patti Hall, Zoo director, said. “We started with lemurs years ago and they became so popular.”“ The encounters are educational based. The zoo keepers give guests various animal facts and even chances to feed the animals. “Our philosophy that you can feel it, touch it, get your picture taken with it, you’ll connect with it,” Hall said. “If you leave here with just a little more respect for animals than you did when you came in, we feel like we’ve done our job.” Ninety-eight percent of the guests that pass through the Zoo are families. All ages are welcome to the Zoo, which is one of the things that makes it so special. “One of the few family entities where parents can really interact with their children. I love the parents who bring the kids to the Zoo for the first time. To be able to get close and interactive and share that is really quite miraculous,” Hall said. “There’s nothing

like seeing a child’s face light up, or a 70-year-old’s, when they see something like that.” Take a trip with you family to the Zoo at 1204 Gulf Shores Parkway in Gulf Shores. The beach is a great place for families to enjoy their time together. With so many options on land, in the water and in the air, anyone is sure to find the perfect family adventure.

Congratulations to all of the Fort Morgan boaters for their exceptional courtesy and patience at the boat ramp during the opening weeks of red snapper season. With well over 100 boat trailers, parking becomes quite a challenge along with picking up fisherman and driving the boat in circles, waiting on your turn to launch or load your boat. Everyone is naturally anxious to race to their favorite rig or waypoint to catch their two snapper, but I never witnessed any tempers flaring. Also congratulations for all the endless hours of hard work and negotiating done by our Alabama Marine Resources to provide us with 66 days of Red Snapper fishing within our temporary nine-mile state waters. That has opened up a whole new world of fishing this summer, even though it’s only for red snapper. Hopefully everyone is complying in the efforts to register the snapper caught each trip. This is being done to help document accurate data concerning our healthy snapper fishery and convince the Feds that our longer state-water season is justified.

Safety

hooked on fishin

with Phil Dortch

Safety has to be a main priority when boating or participating in any of the many water activities we have the privilege of enjoying in the Gulf Shores area. Nothing can ruin a beautiful fun day like someone getting injured unnecessarily due to careless actions and poor judgment. Even though accidents can occur, every boater should school themselves in basic first aid, knowing what to do if an emergency occurs. As a boat captain, I just attended a CPR/ First Aid training course at the Gulf Shores Fire Department. The guys teaching the class are truly professionals and we should thank them and be proud to have such a team in our neighborhood. We never know when we need to assist someone on the boat or beach that may be having a heart attack, treating a cut or sting or suffering from heat exhaustion. Knowing how to correctly administer CPR until professional help arrives can save a life. AED units (automatic external defibrillator) have become common place in many churches and places of business. Knowing where one is located can be vital when seconds count. Remember, it could be you lying on the ground hoping that someone knows what to do. Make sure your First Aid Kit on board has sufficient supplies if needed. It’s a good idea to also have a small bolt cutter tool on board to cut off a hook. Injuries while boating and fishing will at

some point in time occur, it’s just a matter of when, how severe and knowing how to treat the injury. Be prepared.

Boat or Engine Problems Let me share a few personal experiences that could have been tragic if not recognized in time. I am having to frequently replace live well pumps on my boat. It uses the type that you just pop off the top cartridge, which is the motor part and replace it with a new one by simply rewiring the connection. If you don’t properly secure the motor or actually forget to put it back on, your boat will quickly fill with water and sink if not caught in time. That’s why I would highly recommend installing a second bilge pump. With our salt water environment, we constantly have electrical problems. Another example is that we recently replaced my salt water wash down pump, which is a great item for helping keep the boat clean while fishing. I’m in the habit of occasionally turning on the bilge pump just to make sure something hasn’t happened that I am unaware of. Sure enough, water starter pouring out both sides of the boat, pumps running wide open. After safely getting the boat on the trailer, we discovered that the hose located behind the wall where the coiled spray hose is attached had slipped off and I had forgot to turn the switch off, thus pumping the boat full of water. Had this happened offshore and the bilge pumps not been in proper working order, we would have been swimming with the sharks. That’s another reason to invest in a PLB (personal locator beacon). All of sudden the engine that has been running great all day suddenly quits. I had replaced a battery terminal cable connector, tightened it sufficiently, so I thought, but later discovered it didn’t tighten properly on the size cable, therefore created a poor connection. After that was corrected, it happened again. This time it was the main battery switch. Even though we had cleaned corrosion off the cables, it wasn’t good enough to provide a consistent connection. Fortunately the failure happened at the dock. The only sure cure was to replace the switch. If you hear an alarm, don’t ignore. With these modern engines, it usually means that something must be dealt with. In my case, there was enough water in the water separator to get into the fuel filter and set off the alarm. If not corrected, you will be dead in the water waiting for Sea Tow. Hopefully we learn from others mistakes and keep a check on our equipment before heading offshore.

Red snapper The season continues for Alabama State waters until July 31. Remember that Triggerfish and Amberjack season is closed until

Aug. 1. You can use a variety of baits to catch snapper. Live pogies, caught in a cast net or pinfish caught in a pinfish trap, or croaker caught at the dock and dead shrimp all work well. Another good choice is frozen Spanish sardines, or cigar minnows. Note: The Spanish sardines are much cheaper and work just as well. Squid is also a great choice. As a matter of fact, we caught some nice mangrove (black snapper) on squid while snapper fishing and they don’t have the season or two per person restrictions like the red snapper. King mackerel have been late showing up this year but July should be a great time to hear a reel screaming off line with a big King on the other end. Some big Spanish mackerel have been caught trolling a variety of artificial baits. Remember to obey the rules and get home safe. If you catch fish, that’s a bonus. Capt. Phil , 251-223-3682 , islandwestcharters@yahoo.com

Flavor at the Beach BROWN BUTTER BALSALMIC GLAZED SNAPPER

RECIPE BY CHEF DYLAN FEENKER OF LULU’S

Yield 1 ¼ cups. Covers 4-6 (6-8 ounces) Filets of Fresh Fish. Ingredients: 2 sticks and 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons shallots minced 2 teaspoons minced garlic ¼ cup white wine 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon soy sauce ½ teaspoon corn starch ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper Directions for glaze: 1. Take 2 sticks of butter and place it in a small saucepan on low-medium heat. Once butter has reached desired color and aroma, remove from heat being very careful not to burn. Once the butter is browned, pull from heat and let it cool. 2. Take the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and place it in a small sauce pan on medium heat and add shallots and garlic. Cook until garlic starts to brown, then deglaze with the white wine. 3. Reduce wine au sec (which means almost dry) then add the brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and lemon juice. Bring to a low simmer. Next, mix the soy sauce and corn starch together to form a slurry, add slurry mixture to the pan bring to a simmer to thicken sauce to desired consistency. 4. Remove the sauce from the heat and place it in a food processor or blender and mix on high, then slowly drizzle the brown butter (it is important to make sure you slowly add the butter so the glaze will emulsify). Then set sauce to the side while preparing the fish. Preparation of fish: 1. Preheat oven to 375. 2. Season fish with salt and pepper. Heat large skillet to medium high heat. Add oil and butter. Once pan has reached appropriate temperature, add fish filets presentation side down first. (Note: Fish should only be flipped once. It is important the surface of the fish is allowed to sear and crisp in order to reach desired texture.) 3. Once presentation side has seared to a golden brown, flip each filet. If the pan isn’t large enough for 4 filets, the fish can be seared in batches. Just make sure you add the olive oil and butter to the pan before the next batch of fish. 4. Remove filets from the skillet and place in an appropriate sized baking pan. Glaze fish by spooning glaze over or by brushing on with a pastry brush and place in oven. Let cook for 2 minutes. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net July 2016 ● Beachin’ 33
