ust as Beachin rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events,
mouth-watering seafood and Jessica Jones Southern dishes, apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells—go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing... nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspires at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Flower fun to come ‘Rushing’ to the Gulf By Jessica Jones
Any horticulture student, landscaper or gardening enthusiast knows the name Felder Rushing, and this year, Gulf Shores Garden Club will bring “The Gestalt Gardener” to Pleasure Island for the group’s 22nd Annual Flower Seminar on Feb. 6. The guest speaker will present “Gardening Fun with Felder Rushing” at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores. Guests can look forward to experiencing his light-hearted approach to gardening, along with extensive knowledge portrayed through books like “Garden Hearts” and “Slow Gardening,” as well as articles in publications like “Landscape Architecture,” ”Better Homes and Gardens” and “National Geographic.” Rushing has held leadership positions in the American Horticulture Society, Gardeners of America (formerly the Men’s Garden Club) and the Garden Writers Association, and he is a member of the National Youth Gardening Committee. He is also an honorary member of Federated Garden Clubs of Mississippi. A 10th-generation American gardener whose pioneer ancestors settled across the Southeast, bringing many plants with them, Rushing hosts a weekly, call-in show on NPR affiliate stations and travels the globe to lecture, participate in the winter solstice at Stonehenge and even act as Grand Marshall by driving his Green Truck (an old, green truck that holds a flower bed and garden accessories in the back) during the 30th Annual MAL’s St. Paddy’s Day Parade. “I am a Southern gardener with way too much book learning and travel experiences to suit my laid-back style, so when I am not on the road lecturing, I'm knocking around the celebrated garden surrounding my little backyard cabin in Mississippi with my brown dog named Rusty, or on a cottage farm in rural Shropshire (in the western midlands of England),” he said on felderrushing.net. “So I work hard at relaxing and having as much fun as possible — with as little effort as practical.” Rushing prides himself on gardening his own way and said that he hopes others will make their own paradises. “I am a charter member of the scattered tribe called ‘dirt gardeners’ who plant what we like, where we like, and for whatever reason we like,” he said. “Here's hoping
Felder Rushing will be at the 22nd Annual Flower Seminar in Gulf Shores on Feb. 6. you have fun in your own ‘guarded area’ — your garden.” While attendees can enjoy refreshingly simplified tips (“We are daunted, not dumb,” he says), they can also expect light lunch, a display of fresh flower arrangements made by the members that will be given away as door prizes, raffles and second-chance raffles including golf items donated by Brandt Snedeker and a Beefeater Gas outdoor grill. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Jubilee Apparel & Gifts, Too Hot Mama’s at their Pelican Place and San Rock Cay locations and the Thomas Norton Public Library in Gulf Shores. Tickets are also available by contacting Diane Nowicki: 251-974-6606 or dianded@ gulftel.com, or Mindy Jones: 251-968-9777 or islandenclosures@gulftel.com. No tickets will be sold at the door. Toast to the Coast By Lindsay Mott
The South Baldwin Newcomers Club is holding its first “Toast to the Coast” event as its annual fundraiser in February, and tickets are still available. “It is a little bit of a risk,” said Sharon Ramirez, immediate past president and ways and means chairman of the club, about trying a new type of event this year. The club usually has a lunch event with some entertainment or a sale of some sort, but planners decided to go an evening route this year. This gives more people an opportunity to come, including the husbands and friends of group members and those who work. Toast to the Coast will be held Feb. 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Orange Beach Event Center at the Wharf. The event is open to the public, and for $35 a ticket, food and two glasses of wine will be provided. There will also be a silent auction and live entertainment. Participating restaurants include Bellagio, Baumhowers, Ships, Big Fish, Flippers, Chappys and more There will also be a “chef ’s challenge” throughout the night with guests voting on their favorite dish. The winning chef ’s prize will be awarded at the end of the night. According to Ramirez, silent auction items include casino packages, condo stays, art, various experience items, golf packages,
From left to right, president Charlene Doody, third-vice president Cindy Latiolais, ways and means chair Sharon Ramirez, secondvice president Barbara Suberi and membership chair Margaret Jones stand by silent-auction items. The auction items shown are a hand-blown bowl from Orange Beach Arts Center, a case of Naked Grape wine and a painting done behind antique windows painted by Barbara Suberi. wine and more. They will also have a raffle for some giveaway items. The entertainment will be from a mixed bag of local and national artists. Because the featured artists do not play together often, it will be a jam session that “cannot be reproduced,” Ramirez said. Local acts include Doug Pearson and Michele Martineau’s “Hot Sand,” Colleen Keener and Lonesome Mel. They will share the stage with national artists Michael Connolly and Lucinda Rowe. At the time of the interview there were approximately 100 tickets left for the event. To buy tickets, contact Ramirez at 251975-1258. Dress for the event is “island dressy,” she said, which means your best flip flops. The South Baldwin Newcomers
Club has been in existence for 17 years and now has approximately 300 members. The ladies’ club meets most months and hosts other events during the year, as well. It has a number of breakout groups that focus on specific interests – wine, bunko, books, etc., and is open to new members at any time. All proceeds from the club’s events go back to local charities; the group averages about $22,000 in donations each year. It also gives annual scholarships. The goal of the club is to help women meet other women and get acclimated to the community. Some members leave the club once they feel comfortable and others stay in it. They have a good mix of both types of members. Membership is $20 per year.

February 2013
It’s February and I’m ready for all this cold and wet weather to be gone. It seems that on most week days I have Mobile Bay all to myself. This month our local fishermen will be on the water in droves. They know that even if it’s cold early that the sun will come up soon and warm the shallow water all around the bays and bayous and those real big trout that people write about will be looking for lunch and will knock the spots off a top water that’s fished just right. The trout are hungry and are in the pre-spawn and want to return to some salty water in the worst way. All that keeps then in the rivers and the deep water is the temperature. If the weather stays cold then you need only to run the Eastern Shore rivers and fish the deeper holes with plastics and fish them slow. If you see bait fish in the river then switch from plastic shrimp to plastic fish. There are a multitude of baits to pick from so try to match your baits to the bait fish that you see. The key is to fish slow. Slot Red Fish will be in the bay and in shallow water looking for small blue crags. Fish any structure that you find as well as any bulk heads of piers. If you see stumps in the water then pay close attention to them. Fish them slow and cover the area real well. Shrimp (real or plastic) will work fine as will small crabs or plastic crabs. Fish at or near the bottom under a cork. Be sure to buff up your tackle with some good mono leader as the Red Fish will most certainly pull your baits to the bottom and wrap the line around any stump with 5 miles of where you are fishing. A 26-inch Red Fish on 12-pound test in 3 feet of water is a wonderful site and it hurts your heart when he breaks off on a stump 10 feet from the boat. Just buff up your tackle a little so that you can eat some fresh fried Red Fish that night for dinner. If you are lucky and get some flat water days, try the light house and the rip-rap around it for some big Red Fish that will often go up to 40 pounds. They like fresh, live bait best. Try Pin Fish, Croakers, large Bull Minnows, or the largest live Shrimp that you can find. Cut bait works but you may start to pick up trash fish if February warms a little.
GulfVisitorGuide.com
The White Trout and Ground Mullet should be in big numbers this month at the light house as well as around your favorite, close-in rig. Those same rigs will hold large Red Fish, as well. While you can boat a big red fish with 12-pound test, it makes more sense to me to have heavier tackle set up and baited when there may be big Red Fish around. A long fight on light line is fun but it can harm or tire the fish to the point that they don’t survive the release. It’s sad to see a big Red Fish float belly up down current. February may be the best Sheepshead month of the year, too. All the rigs will hold them in large numbers and believe me when I say that a 9-pound Sheepshead on 12-pound test is a great match; and when you boat 50 or more of these guys you’ll know why so many people fill their freezers with Sheepshead this month. I’ve equipped my boat with a boat hook and a 50-foot, half- inch rope with a shock rubber attached, as well as a scarper that will knock shell fish off the legs of the rigs that I fish. I just throw my rope over or around a rig support then grab it with the boat hook and tie it off. I then scape the legs of the rig with the scrapper and drift back to the end of the rope. The shock absorber keeps the waves from jerking the boat around, plus I can pull my boat back to the rig and scrape more whenever I need to. This month can produce some large ice chests full of fish. Always know the law and keep only what you care to clean. Stay safe and keep dry. For more, visit backbayfishingwithdon.com or call 251-550-5418.

gulftel.com or call Wednesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 251-986-8375 and ask for Tammy. A private, 501c3 non-profit facility, BCHM was organized in 1981 with the mission “to preserve the heritage of the family and early farm culture of Baldwin County through the creation of a home for historically significant buildings, artifacts and documents from community life.” Its basic foundations being, Home, Church, School and Community, as it was throughout all of early America. Each year, BCHM continues to advance its mission along with creating an educational experience for young and old. Through its programs with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, the county 4-H Clubs, Snowbird clubs and
promotions, senior centers and public and private schools, it has provided the story of the stalwart people who cleared the land, built the towns and made sacrifices to provide us the life we enjoy today in Baldwin County. BCHM hopes you will take part in this event by providing support, as a sponsor, plus help keep this important reservoir of our heritage from becoming what it was setup to preserve — a memory of the past.

Columbus ships the Pinta and the Nina to dock in Gulf Shores On Feb. 5, the Pinta and the Nina, replicas of Columbus’ ships, will open in Gulf Shores. The ships will be docked at Lulu’s Homeport Marina until their departure early Monday morning Feb, 11. The Nina was built completely by hand, without the use of power tools. “Archaeology” magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the space shuttle of the 15th century. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced sailing museum for the purpose of educating the public on the caravel, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $6 for students, 5 to 16 years old. Children 4 and younger are free. The ships are open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 200 E 25th Ave., in Gulf Shores.

11 years, then divorced for the second time. She packed up and transferred to Atlanta. Working for the federal government another two years, her spirit of adventure took over and she decided it was time to strike out in another direction. With her background in hand, and a positive attitude instilled from her mom, she applied for and got a job in logistics with a national trucking firm and worked her way up to logistics manager. She controlled the operation of 86 team drivers and 30 single operators. After five years, she changed trucking companies and assumed the position of terminal manager with a big increase in pay. Life was good; things were rolling along nicely when, on Sept. 3, 2003, she literally hit a wall. Driving home from work, cruising along at 65 mph, she was blindsided by a drunk driver as the other car turned against a light, directly in front of her. The accident forced her to take a disability retirement. Five surgeries later, while slowly recuperating, she went to visit her sister who lived in Pensacola. Elizabeth Anne rode the wheelchair out on the beach, felt the soft sand on her feet, saw the blue-green water, felt the warm Florida/Alabama sunshine and knew that this was where she wanted to be. With the help of friends, she sold or packed everything she owned and moved to Pensacola to live with her sister, who agreed to be her caretaker until she got better. As the warm sun healed her broken body, she started exploring the Coast. It wasn’t long before she found, and fell in love with, Pleasure Island (Gulf Shores/Orange Beach). When sufficiently healed, she rented an apartment in Orange Beach for a year, then moved to Gulf Shores off Ft. Morgan Road. Elizabeth Anne penned the name Khandi Tumeo; she now had time to do indulge her longtime love of writing. Sometimes bad things happen for a reason, and in this case it was so that she could get serious about writing. She said she’s written 13 manuscripts that are completed, edited and waiting for a publisher. She says she still has about 50 manu-
Elizabeth Anne Hollaway scripts in various stages of completion. She’s worked at songwriting and transposing for various instruments and has created some original music, she said. When I asked her what lies ahead, she told me she wanted to find a part-time job to finance her school costs to get a degree in creative writing, with a minor in English. She hopes to teach or lecture and continue her writing. She’s traveled extensively in Europe, but it’s a big world, and she wants to see it all. She said that living here has been an adventure. Sitting on the beach, watching the sun set, writing poetry and finishing and publishing her manuscripts are her definitions of dreams come true. She still wants to meet her “last forever love” and believes he is out there, she said. She wants to be recognized as a great writer and hopes one day to have one of her books picked up for a movie. She believes every author has a voice and we’re here to listen. She loves the Island, and we love her…..We thank her for being ON THE ISLAND, and wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Gulf Adventure Center at Gulf State Park plans spring opening By Susi Robichaux
Officials from the Gulf Adventure Center at Gulf State Park are looking forward to completing construction of their featured attraction, the Hummingbird Ziplines, after additional permitting requirements and relocation of crews in the wake of Hurricane Sandy caused minor delays. “There seems to be some misconceptions about the reasons you aren’t seeing progress, including environmental issues,” said Andrew Hudson, General Manager. “Truth of the matter is, we misunderstood what type of permit we were required to
have and are now working with officials to secure the correct permit.” Construction is set to resume next month, and the Gulf Adventure Center is slated to open this spring. Located at 21101 State Hwy. 135 at the entrance to Gulf State Park, the Gulf Adventure Center will offer outdoor adventures including kayaking and paddle boarding on Lake Shelby in addition to The Hummingbird Ziplines. For more information please visit facebook.com/GulfAdventureCenter or gulfadventurecenter.com. Check the March issue of Beachin’ for more details.

“Fade To Reality The force of imagination the tides of which carry me from end to end from the crystal sea to the wondrous plains I think in wonder what is the length of stress? For me, the hour of its end comes with nothing but splendorous sights of nature The water slapping the shore The mist spraying into the air That spectacle of color marking the sky after the rain The stilling effect of the wind whistling through the trees Of course, then, the dreams fade to reality....

Vicki’s King Cake 1-2 cans crescent roll dough Apple pie filling (or 6 peeled and diced red apples, sautéed with 1 cup sugar and ¼ cup water till reduced to fruit with syrup. You may choose to add cinnamon or brown sugar.) 1-2 cup confectioner’s sugar 1-2 tablespoon water Purple sugar, green sugar, gold or yellow sugar 1-inch, plastic baby
Snuggly Spanish Coffee 1 cup coffee 1 ½ ounce coffee liquor 1 ounce 151 rum 2 teaspoon nutmeg ½ ounce triple sec Whipped cream Sugar Dip the rim of a wine glass in water, then sugar to create a crusted rim. Add coffee liquor, rum, nutmeg and triple sec, then fill the remaining glass with coffee. Use whipped cream to garnish.
Place ½ of crescent roll dough in a circle on a greased cookie sheet. Pour pie filling or apple syrup on top of the dough and top with remaining crescent roll dough. Pinch edges together on both inside and outside, then bake according to crescent roll directions. Cool. Turn the cake over to expose the bottom, and press the 1-inch, plastic baby into a portion of the cake. Return cake to right-side-up position. (Tradition says that whoever’s piece of cake contains the baby, will provide the King Cake for the next Mardi Gras season.) Mix frosting by whisking confectioner’s sugar and water together, then drizzle over cake. Sprinkle colored sugar in sections of purple, green, then gold and repeat over the whole cake. Garnish with washed Mardi Gras beads and coins.
