Black Friday
s t ’ n o D d n a s o D
BEFORE BLACK FRIDAY
DO Make a List. Most of us find ourselves planning Christmas gifts at the first chill in the air. Keep a list of friends and family who you plan on gifting to during the holidays with gift ideas next to their names. DO Plan Ahead. Most retailers offer an online or printed advertisement of the sales they plan to hold on Black Friday. Take advantage of this knowledge to save bundles on the gifts for your special ones. You'll be able to compare prices, decide what gifts to buy online or in-store and maybe even find some coupons for more savings. DON'T Order from websites that have low ratings or negative feedback. No one likes to be scammed. As always, be sure to check the reviews of the store if you are purchasing merchandise online. Phony gifts ads are out there, especially during the holidays. DO Plan a route of which stops you want to make. Save gas, time and your patience by mapping out the stores that hold your future gifts. To save space, go to the store that has your largest gift and work your way to the smallest gift. DON’T Get breakables at your first stop.
Great Gift Ideas
Holiday Gift Guide 15
Long lines, crazy crowds, but must-have sales that are worth all of the hassle. Black Friday is approaching and it's the day the most dedicated shoppers have waited 364 days for. Here are a few simple Do's and Don'ts to remember when Friday, Nov. 28 rolls around.
THE DAY OF
DO Set an Alarm. It's difficult to come out of the food coma from Thanksgiving dinner, but if you want to beat the Black Friday rush be sure to set an alarm in time for you to get ready and gather your shopping gear! The lines tend to be the shortest early in the morning and the early bird gets the worm. DON’T Sleep in unless you're prepared to miss out on the first come, first served deals. DO Dress accordingly to the weather. Be prepared to wait outside in line to enter certain stores and be prepared to battle the weather at the outside shopping outlets if needed. Keep rain forecast and the temperature in mind! DON’T Wear uncomfortable clothes and accessories such as heels, or a purse that is difficult to keep up with. If you plan on doing a lot of shopping, it's all about comfort. DO Bring others. It’s always good to have reinforcements because you can cover twice the amount of area...or more! Send your shoppers on missions for different gifts to ensure all presents are picked up. DON’T Send your shoppers to get their own gift! Under the direction of

our holiday shopping adventures can be rewarding to the town you call home. Rather than spending your holiday dollars at popular chain stores and shopping malls, why not help out businesses in your community by shopping locally? To support small businesses in the area, the Small Town Saturday movement encourages shoppers to visit locally owned shops for this years' holiday shopping. Founded by American Express in 2010, the day allows small business owners from all over to join the movement by promoting their businesses to gain more
customers. This year, Small Business Saturday is Saturday, Nov. 29. The single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before. Join the movement by shopping locally at stores near you. For free advertising materials such as printable posters, flyers, online ads and a designated location on the “shop small” customers map, visit www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business.

32nd annual Christmas Fest returns to Bay Minette Christmas Fest will be held Dec. 12-13 and vendor booths are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. This year’s title sponsors are Baldwin EMC and Windcreek Casino. For many residents in North Baldwin, Christmas Fest weekend helps kick-off the holiday season. “The lighting of the tree, the parade, Santa, music and the festival food all come together one weekend in December and create a sense of nostalgia for the adults that grew up looking forward to the festival, a sense of magic for the children and it brings together a community to celebrate the year and ring in the holiday,” North Baldwin Chamber director Ashley Jones said. In addition to numerous arts and crafts and food vendors, there will be games and fun activities and plenty of great entertainment to fill the weekend. There will also be a special children’s area set up in Blackburn Park manned by volunteer groups. The Kids’ Zone will offer the younger set some activities to enjoy during the festival. Friday’s activities will include the lighting of the Christmas tree in Blackburn Park, Santa’s arrival and performances by local talent. Bedtime Stories with Santa will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Bay Minette Public Library. The fun continues Saturday with more time for shopping at vendor booths, live entertainment, Pancakes
with Santa, Christmas Fest 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run, and the annual parade. For more information, contact the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce at 251-937-5665.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to host 6th Festival of Nativities St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Daphne will host its Sixth Annual Festival of Nativities to usher in the Christmas season. This special exhibit has featured over 200 nativity displays in a variety of mediums, representing religions and traditions from countries all over the world. “It is an honor for St. Paul’s to again host this celebration for our community. We hope that people of all faiths and beliefs will visit and enjoy the craftsmanship and the collections that people have created,” said Debbie Quinn, Festival of Nativities planning committee member. This special Christmas season tradition will open to the community as follows: To-date, contributing local artists include: Lee Holmes, Candace Pryor/Tom Jones Pottery, and Debbie Rawls Holobaugh. Also contributing a specially-created nativity scene will be participants of The Exceptional Foundation of the Gulf Coast. This is a rare opportunity to see such a vast array of international history and traditions on display locally. In addition to the nativity scenes, Mike Lyons, Lyons Share Gallery, will create ten stables made from recycled wood framing material. These will
be available for sale at the event.
About the Festival of Nativities

These handcrafted masterpieces have been designed and constructed with mediums such as clay, glass, hay, paper, porcelain, and wood, as well as other, more exotic materials, like abalone shells, alabaster, balsa wood, and bamboo. Additionally, there will be works of Bay area artists available for purchase, with a wide range of perspectives on the story of the birth of Jesus, stemming from different time periods, international faiths and cultural origins.

Neville brings New Orleans to Orange Beach
W
ith one of the most distinctive voices in American music and a career spanning more than 50 years, Grammy Award-winning singer Aaron Neville brings New Orleans to Orange Beach for the holidays. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber presents “Christmas with Aaron Neville” on Dec. 3. The concert will be at the Orange Beach Event Center at The Wharf as a kickoff to the 2014 Coastal Christmas season. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s announcement came Nov. 4 at the Orange Beach City Council meeting and was well received by all in attendance. “This incredible event has been created by a committed volunteer group determined to stimulate economic growth in our area and help local businesses prosper,” Tourism and Special Events Vice Chairman Braswell McMeans said. “This is just the beginning, we will continue to grow Coastal Christmas and welcome visitors to our area in our shoulder season.” A native of New Orleans, Aaron Neville has had four platinum-certified albums and four Top 20 hits in the United States, including three that went to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart and one that topped the R&B chart. His biggest solo successes have been on the Adult Contemporary chart, where ‘Don’t Know Much,” “All My Life,” and “Everybody Plays the Fool” all reached No. 1 in eight European countries. Aaron is a deeply spiritual man with an angelic voice that mesmerizes audiences through his soulful renditions of holiday favorites. Coastal Christmas is an initiative of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber that is now in its third year. It began in 2012 as a means of promoting and advancing Gulf Shores and Orange Beach as a world-class holiday destination for both travel and shopping. The initiative is chaired by Chamber Board Member Todd Edwards and is overseen by McMeans. Tickets went on sale Thursday, at 10 a.m. for $50. A limited number of premium seat packages are available for $100. “Christmas with Aaron Neville” is an all-ages event. Tickets are required for all attendees. For more information visit AlabamaCoastalChristmas. com. For questions or sponsorship information call 251259-5512 or email coastalchristmasal@gmail.com.
