62nd Baldwin Fair Fair Manager’s Message

The schedule of events and attractions for the 62nd Annual Baldwin County Fair begins with a parade in downtown Robertsdale on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at 10 a.m. The South Alabama Antique Tractor and Engine Club organizes this event, parading restored farm tractors to the delight of the owners and their audiences as well. The Tractor club will have live exhibits including a blacksmith, corn shelling, slab cutter saw, cane syrup press if sugar cane is available and grinding old fashioned cornmeal –they will be exhibiting under the arena. Come see the Titan, a keroseneengine tractor that weighs 10 tons, and stands 12 and half feet tall and 30 feet long. It will be transported and displayed by the SAAETC during the fair, then will return to its home at the Baldwin County Heritage Museum in Elberta. The Myers International Midway will offer “pay one price” specials on Tuesday and Wednesday of Fair Week. Everyone will pay $10 at the gate to receive an armband for unlimited rides. The Sweet Potato Cook-Off, Senior Citizens Kazoo Band, Southern Legends Band, and Tim Brown Entertainment are the special entertainment “in the house” on Thursday, Students and Seniors Citizens Day. A new event this year will be the Emerald Coast Electric Train exhibit in the coliseum. And who isn’t fascinated by miniature electric trains? The rodeo is a longstanding event on Friday and Saturday nights. That’s when “the cowboys come to town” and we all dress in western attire. It’s so much fun to see the arena filled with children of all ages running in the “calf scramble.” Fairground entertainment will be the Star Family Circus and Thrill

Show featuring a giant “space wheel of destiny”, and motorcycle daredevils in the “globe of death.” Just wait until you see the surprise ending! What would any fair be without the Creative Arts Competition exhibits? Baldwin County has a good reputation statewide in the Alabama Association of Fairs for many outstanding Sonny, manager of the Baldwin County Fair displays in this division. I encourage all of you to enter your canning, baking, sewing, quilting, crafts, scrapbooks, art, and photography. You might be placed in the winner’s circle and get a rosette ribbon! So, that’s a tour of the scheduled events for the 2012 Fair. Each year my motherin-law says, “That’s the best fair ever; nothing can top that one!”

Hope she says the same thing this year! See you at the Fair!

From The Office Of

John McMillan

Alabama’s Commisioner of Agriculture and Industries Welcome to the Alabama National Fair & Agricultural Exposition, Inc. Tornadoes, drought, rising energy prices, severe cutbacks in government farm subsidies and the unforeseen events of everyday life all challenge our Alabama farmers and agribusinesses on an almost constant John McMillan basis. Our Alabama farm families are among the most resilient and hard working in America. As Commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture & Industries, it is my privilege to serve the people of our Great State, including the one-fifth of Alabama families who make their living from agriculture, our No. 1 industry. As we reflect on the year during this fall season, we hope you and your family will participate in Alabama’s fairs and livestock exhibitions, as they provide some of our state’s best family entertainment. Fairs and livestock shows are also educational and offer up-and-coming farmers the opportunity to compete and strive for excellence. Please let me offer a special thanks to those who work to make these events a success. Your endeavors are most appreciated!

The Baldwin County Heritage Museum presents Heritage Needle Arts‌Window to the Past. The Museum will display clothing and household items to highlight the gentle arts. Throughout history, man has added special touches to everyday items. Young ladies were taught from early ages to sew, as sewing clothing was often a necessity. The arts of lace making, quilting, embroidery, crochet, tatting, knitting or weaving were passed down generation to generation. Curtains to be hung in windows had special touches like a crocheted trim. Pillow case and sheets for the bed had special touches like lace or embroi-

dery. Aprons, dish cloths, napkins and potholders were made by using various types of needle work. Rugs were given special touches, also. The display of such items will show that even though they were functional, they were unique works of art. JJ’s Old Tyme Photos will offer a country-style set for kids, teens and adults to offer up their best smiles. Attendees can don bandanas, cowboy hats and wrangle up a bale of hay. Then take sepia tone memories home to enjoy and share with family and friends. The South Alabama Antique

Tractor and Engine Club exhibit will include antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, as well as many other types of antique farm equipment. From 3-8 p.m., the club will hold cornshelling and -grinding demonstrations, sugarcane-grinding demonstrations, buzz-saw demonstrations and blacksmith and iron-work demonstrations. From 4-5 p.m., children can participate in the kiddie pedal tractor pulls. The Southern Legends band will perform at the Baldwin County Fair. 2012 Volunteer of the Year:

Barbara Kostelecky Barbara Kostelecky has been a Fair volunteer in the Baldwin County Fair Creative Arts Division for the past 15 years. Her contribution of time and effort has been concentrated with the entries of ladies clothing, sewing, youth art and photography exhibits. Barbara is always cheerful, pleasant, easy going, work with any one and “make do person and always with a smile. In speaking about the ability to do many things as a homemaker, she “puts up all kinds of fruits and vegetables, sews, gardens, and is a caregiver for family members and children in the community. If you want to know how to do something a little unusual like make sauerkraut from home grown cabbage, just ask Barbara. For many years, she and husband Laddie, Jr. even raised Emu Birds on their farm in Silverhill. Have you ever heard of Pysanky Egg Dying? It’s a unique hand painted egg shell, decorated in the Ukrainian folk design. Delicate and colorful best describes these handmade art objects. Barbara is a member of the Robertsdale Senior Citizens Pzanky Egg group that meets monthly to paint eggs. Each member will enter five pysanky eggs in the Baldwin County Fair. It’s always a popular creative arts exhibit located in the

coliseum. The pysanky eggs are created using a wax – resist method to apply the colorful design to the empty egg shell. The custom was passed down to her family from Czech descendents. On a recent trip to visit her daughter in New York, she visited a Ukrainian Museum display featuring Pysanky Egg Dying. The Kosteleckys are parents of two daughters and two sons that live locally and in New York. Their seven grandchildren are from age 1 up to 21. This busy lady has recently renewed a past hobby, by joining a Bowling League. Barbara’s hard work and dedication to the Baldwin County Fair and to the continuance of agricultural arts has earned her the title of 2012 Volunteer of the Year.

“Brady is pretty dull, but not dead. You can see the farmers burning stumps, clearing fence corners and scraping old plows, and that means farming.” This poignant statement found in the January 11, 1912 edition of the Baldwin Times echoed the sentiment from virtually all corners of Alabama a century ago. Farming was paramount then as much of the state remained rural and devoted to the farming profession. While the methods of and the products produced by the farmer have changed, at least in Baldwin County, farming still remains at the heart of what remains a rural minded county. Today as the population centers within the county expand, the family farm remains very visible and viable and, as a result, remains part of today’s culture. Illustrating this fact is the Baldwin County Fair which continues to celebrate the agricultural tradition each fall. The Baldwin County Fair, which will be held the last week in September embraces the past while advancing the future of the agricultural industry. That fact is as true now as it was 100 years ago. One mainstay of the Baldwin County farmers in the first quarter of the 20th century was the production of cucumbers. Local farmers grew tons of the vegetable for export to the rest of the United States. As such, instructions for the proper planting and growth of

17

the cucumber was debated widely and appeared in several publications in the state. In Baldwin County, experts advised planting the crop in early March in rows five feet apart. A second planting coming later that same month was advised to be placed in between the first in case frost killed the initial attempt. Sixty days after planting, the first harvesting could take place. Additional harvests could yield thousands of pounds from each farmer’s field eventually filling dozens of freight train cars for shipment. In addition to the tons of cucumbers grown in Baldwin County the Irish potato and the Sweet potato were considered a high priority for local farmers. “Shipments of sweet potatoes from Baldwin County have assumed gigantic proportions in the past ten days. The earlier potatoes have been going out at the rate of several carloads each day and are increasPhoto courtesy of SAATEC ing in number,” proclaimed the August 9, 1912 edition of the Baldwin Times. Expectations that summer were that more than 100 railroad freight cars would leave Foley loaded with Baldwin County potatoes. In 1912 the king of cash crops remained, as always, cotton. That was true all over the state of Alabama even though the boll weevil threatened to displace the king. The weather conditions that year and the per pound price remained heavy burdens on the hearts and minds of the local farmer as it had been for decades. In 1912, those concerns were amplified by the roller coaster weather patterns that Continued on Page 18 - See Farming

brought heavy rains when not needed, and dry weather when rain was desired. Excessive rains early in the growing season eventually gave way to a drier pattern that allowed better cultivation of the crop and the ability to keep the growth of grass at a minimum. The Baldwin County Fair, long a part of the county’s farm culture was in its infancy in 1912. Nothing illustrates this more than the statement released by the Fair Association detailing the financials of their 1911 event. Putting on the Fair that year cost the Association $783.83 while they brought in $791.13 for a profit of $7.30. The event focused, as it does today, on the local exhibits of agricultural expertise. In addition, the attractions included Slim Allen who was billed as a member of the famed Rough Riders. Local residents were encouraged to bring in bucking horses for Allen

to ride as part of his act. The Fair also featured a public wedding of a local couple whose names were kept secret prior to the event. Oddities such as the “reptile queen” and the “largest woman in the world” were also advertised as part of the featured acts. Today’s Fair is a reflection of both the past and the future of farming in Baldwin County. It features exhibits from local residents in myriad disciplines that are reminiscent of farming’s past. The Fair also features a historical display within the Baldwin County Coliseum in Robertsdale that emphasizes the county’s rich heritage. The entertainment value remains in the family friendly midway. Agriculture in Baldwin County has certainly evolved over the past 100 years. And its yearly celebration, the Baldwin County Fair, has grown up as well. Both institutions embrace the future while looking to the past for guidance. Perhaps this is what keeps both healthy and strong in 2012.

After 40 years with the Garden Club, and a lifetime of arranging flowers and helping at florists, churches and weddings, Zinner finds joy in her full-time hobby. She enters rare flowers like Verbena and Aloe Vera, and the Club always wows guests with their display, according to Event Coordinator Melinda Hankins. “She’s the heart of the Fair,” Hankins began. “You couldn’t have fairs without people like Charlotte.” “When I’d attend fairs, I’d always go to the Garden Club booth first so I could see who won.” Zinner took a serious interest in horticulture when she quit the workforce to raise her adopted son, she recalled. “I felt I needed to do something with my time, so I joined the Garden Club, and I have thoroughly

enjoyed it,” she said. She is currently serving her third, two-year term as president, and has acted as secretary and treasurer in past years. She has also arranged flowers for the local YMCA and Faith Fellowship Church for the past 12 to 13 years, she divulged. “Anytime I have flowers, they have flowers,” she said with a smile. He bought 80 acres in Loxley and began farming cucumbers and sweet potatoes, according to Margaret Childress Long. At one point, the Childress family’s land had increased to 500 acres, and they row-cropped, raised cattle and hogs and two sons-in-law owned dairies. Now, for the past two years, great grandson Wes Moore, has held a Childress family reunion at Alligator Alley in Summerdale, at his father’s farm. America) made their home in Stockton. The daughters moved farther south after their father and grandfather had set up homesteads in North Carolina. Archibald McMillan immigrated from Scotland, and his son, Malcolm settled in Stockton. He headed south from North Carolina to bring supplies to his cousin Neil, a Presbyterian minister. Murdock Murphy McMillan moved to Stockton in 1842. He purchased two lots for $1,000-$2,000 each in the original town of Stockton, incorporated by William Kitchen in 1839, in 1855. He was a member of the home guard during the Civil War. Murdock’s son, Benjamin, moved with the family to Stockton in 1842, and became the 16th postmaster of the town. He owned Mound Island, a 40-feet high mound with surrounding smaller ones, located on the Tensaw River. He also built the “Annie D.,” named for his wife, a famous carrier of freight and passengers between Stockton and Mobile. He represented Baldwin County in the Constitutional Convention of Alabama as a Democrat, Presbyterian and Mason.
