Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Celebrates 65 Years The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is celebrating its 65th year in downtown Fairhope, making it one of the oldest art festivals in the country. It originally started as the Arts and Crafts Tour on February 22, 1953. It was planned to coordinate with the Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce hoped to attract visitors attending those major events in Mobile to the Eastern Shore, allowing residents to show off their many talents. In those early days, the Arts and Crafts Tour lasted a full week and exhibits were inside store windows. The tour schedule included entertainment and craft demonstrations. In 1965, the tour expanded to include exhibitors and activities from the cities of Spanish Fort and Daphne. The week’s opening ceremonies were held in Spanish Fort and ended with a play in Fairhope. By 1975 craftsmen set up displays in “CraftHouses” which were created out of vacant buildings.

A few years later in 1978, craftsmen moved to the sidewalks and the festival was condensed to three days. Craftsmen moved again to the center of the streets in 1983. Today the Festival attracts talent from across the country and many other related events take place up and down the Eastern Shore. Over the years, the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival has garnered national attention as one of the most prestigious art shows in the country. It was first named one of the Top 200 Festivals in the U.S. by Sunshine Artist Magazine in 1997, and continues to be ranked among the best each year to this date. The purpose of the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival remains the same: to promote good will and festivity along the Eastern Shore and to showcase the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available in our favorite piece of paradise.

Meet the Poster Artist ARDITH GOODWIN

VIBRANT POSTER ART HIGHLIGHTS COASTAL LIFESTYLE This year’s poster art by Ardith Goodwin features sailboats on the bay in bright coastal colors. “This is the perfect selection to represent our 65th year because it is vibrant, active, fresh and expresses all the joys of living on the bay in such a wonderful coastal community,” said Festival Chairman Laura English. Goodwin combines her love of writing and educating with a self-taught passion for art and has been a professional artist for the past 15 years. Despite facing life changing orthopedic challenges, Ardith holds true to her faith and the belief that no matter what challenge life throws her way, nothing will quench her spirit to continue creating, sharing and inspiring. “It is an honor to be selected as the featured artist for the 65th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. Growing up along the Gulf Coast has given me a rich connection to our beautiful way of life here and the ability to express that creatively was exciting,” said Goodwin, “What a joy it was to capture that love of coastal living through paint.” Posters can be purchased for $10 at the festival merchandise booth. Prints can be purchased for $20 and t-shirts are $15, XXL $18.

Judges

Rodgers Naylor

Rodgers finds a rich array of painting subjects close to home in Denver, CO and throughout the US and abroad, especially the Mediterranean region of Europe. Working with oil on canvas, Rodgers takes a strong interest in the effects of light and shadow and warm/cool colors, and is intrigued by the interplay between the landscape and its human inhabitants. Each painting is both an abstract composition of light and dark shapes, and the starting point of a story whose details and conclusions may be imagined by the viewer. Rodgers completes some work “alla prima”, i.e. in one painting session, and others as a part of a group of paintings done together over a period of weeks. He paints both in the studio and en plein air. Subject matter includes Natural Landscapes, Rural Landscapes Urban, and Landscapes Figures. Rodgers has studied art at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Atelier in Minneapolis, and the Art Students League of Denver.

Philip Rickey Philip Rickey is a sculptor with a special emphasis on public art and large environmental scale works. Rickey’s work includes the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial in Eveleth, MN; public art spaces in Two Rivers Overlook on the Mississippi River bluff in St. Paul; a Community Vessle by Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis; and a 500-foot-long streetscape installation at the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Discovery District. Currently Rickey is fabricating his largest project to date, Life of Christ: Cycle of Life a 430-foot-long landscape journey describing Christ’s life in 7 Episodes using 73 Washington State basalt columns 3 ½ to 18 ½ feet high and two pieces of 28

red granite. Earlier in his career Rickey taught sculpture, advanced sculpture, drawing and 3D design at Macalester College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and the University of St. Catherine, all in Minnesota. He was educated at Cornell University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Minnesota and has lived in St. Paul, Minnesota for 30 years.

Marie Lamb Marie Lamb’s favorite types of art to create are projects and murals with schools and communities. She and her husband celebrate the family craft, working to create connections between people and the settings

that surround them. Three years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their retirement home in mid-construction, their unique home, designed by their daughter and collaborated on by the whole family, was finally completed and decorated and detailed fully by Marie and her husband, their own work and collected works of others. Their home is their workshop and their gallery. They have received thousands of visitors interested in seeing the house and their work. Marie’s most recent project was the Pass Christian Sundial Project at the Pass Christian City Hall/ Library Complex. A community effort, it took over a year to coordinate, create and install and is a commemoration of the before and afters of Hurricane Katrina intended not to highlight the destruction, but to memorialize life on the coast as they knew it before, and the strides and successes of the community since. Marie achieved her BFA in applied design and visual arts from the University of Houston with a focus on ceramic sculpture with a secondary major in children’s art education.

Awards

Cash prizes are awarded to the top artists and craftsmen. A panel of three very talented and highly respected judges were chosen to select the best works in the 65th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. The awards will be presented during the Artists’ Dinner on Friday evening.

CATEGORIES

Best of Show Overall Chairman’s Award Chamber’s Award Jury Award Eastern Shore Art Center Award of Excellence Alabama Bureau of Tourism Award Fran Faust Slade Merit Award Barbara Haas Merit Award 3 Merit Awards Awards of Distinction for each Category Patron Awards

PATRON AWARD PROGRAM

Many artists would argue the most coveted honor is when visitors stop by their booth and purchase their works. The Patrons Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 worth from one of the festival vendors. When they find that special piece and buy it, they present the artist with a ribbon and placard bearing their name or the name of their business. Patrons may purchase works from any exhibitor they choose and the money goes directly to the artist.

STUDENT ART COMPETITION

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Student Art Competition highlights talent in our local high schools and middle schools. Each school’s art department creates a piece of art on a specially made framed wood, made by local artist and art teacher Shawn Johnson. Their murals are displayed in merchants’ windows throughout the festival. Artists exhibiting in the Arts and Crafts Festival vote on their favorites, selecting the winners. Thank you to Fairhope Ace Hardware for donating the supplies for the boards. Special thanks to Andree’s, M&F Casuals, In the Company of Angels, Gigi & Jay’s and Fairhope Hardware for displaying these murals in their stores and to Segers for funding the winning school awards. You can view all the pieces throughout the remainder of the year at Andree’s.
