The local restaurants offer a delicious fare of cuisines for your enjoyment as well. New to our festival last year was a Children’s area that was a tremendous success and is double the size this year. The Children’s area offers children the opportunity to create individual art and contribute to a larger piece to represent this year’s show. The piece created from the 2015 show will be on display in the tented area. Area residents are very proud of our Arts and Crafts Festival which has been named as one of the top Contemporary Arts and Crafts Festivals in the country by Sunshine Magazine, a “must see” event by Alabama Tourism Magazine and in the top twenty listed by the Southeast Tourism Society. Charming Downtown Fairhope Comes Alive with Art, Music & Delicious Food
The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce proudly presents the 64th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in charming downtown Fairhope. Please join us as we transform the flower-lined streets into an outdoor art gallery. The entire family can also enjoy food, entertainment, kid’s art and exhibits. The festival is scheduled for March 18, 19 & 20, 2016. Festival hours are Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The festival is free to the public. More than 230 exhibitors from all over the country will showcase their best works in this prestigious juried show. The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival has become an Eastern Shore staple as one of the oldest arts and crafts festivals in the state, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Although entertainment has been part of the Arts and Crafts Festival since the early days, this year’s festival will feature a Music Jamboree Saturday night at the Halstead Amphitheater on Faulkner’s Fairhope Campus. Neil Dover takes the stage from 3:30 - 5 p.m. MidLife Crisis plays from 5 - 7 p.m. and Rondale and the Kit Katz top off the evening from 7 - 9 p.m. The outdoor concert will provide an entertaining nightcap to a day at the festival. A shuttle service will be offered by BRATS (Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System) for $5 for a wristband which will be good for the entire day. Free parking will be available at Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place, Eastern Shore Village Center and the east side of Volanta Sports Complex. The festival drop-off location is at the corner of Fairhope Ave. and Bancroft Street near Faulkner State Community College. All of the parking locations are less than a five-minute ride away. Due to limited parking in Fairhope, we recommend using the shuttle services. Free valet parking for bicycles will be provided behind the Fairhope Museum of History. Handicapped parking will be located in the Municipal Parking Lot on Bancroft. History OF THE ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL
The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is now in its 64th year of coordinating the Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope. It originally started as a tour, planned to coordinate with the Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations, with the idea that visitors attending these major events in Mobile would be attracted across the bay, thus allowing visitors and local residents a chance to see some of the many talents of Eastern Shore residents. According to Chamber records and newspaper articles, the first Arts & Crafts tour took place February 22 to February 28, 1952. All exhibits were inside store windows and consisted of a wide variety of interests. The tour schedule included entertainment and craft demonstrations and lasted for an entire week. Although some artists did sell items, the majority of the “tour” consisted of exhibits for viewing only. In 1965 the tour expanded to include exhibitors and activities from the cities of Spanish Fort and Daphne. The week’s opening ceremonies were held in Spanish Fort and ended with a play in Fairhope. The Chamber reported 4,150 visitors; 52 exhibitors and demonstrators were highlighted, in addition to another 41 artists who participated. In 1967 there were more than a hundred displays, exhibits and demonstrations. There was still no entry fee, but all participants were asked to pay a 10% commission on their gross sales. By 1975, craftsmen displayed works and methods in “CraftHouses” created out of vacant buildings. For the first time in 1978, the show was condensed to three days. This was also the first year craftsmen were placed on the

sidewalks, rather than in buildings and businesses. In 1983, the first prize money was awarded. The Best of Show recipient was given $250 and booths were moved from the edge of the streets to the middle. The Mary McGrath Award was established in 1984. We approach this year’s show with much of the same excitement and enthusiasm that previous festivals and tours shared. In 1997, the 45th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival was first named one of the top 200 Festivals in the United States by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The Festival has received this same honor in the following years. Artists who participate in shows all over the United States vote upon this award. In 2007 the show was ranked #10. In 2011 the show was ranked #26. The 2013 Festival was ranked #2 in the state of Alabama and #23 in the Nation. As one may see from this history, the Festival has changed in many ways; its exhibitors are no longer only locals; they come from across the United States. We no longer charge the exhibitors commission on their sales, just an entry fee. The number of visitors is now in six-digit figures, and the activities taking place in conjunction with the Festival have grown by leaps and bounds. The Arts & Crafts Festival’s purpose remains the same; to promote good will and festivity to Fairhope and the Eastern Shore, to provide working capital for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, to exhibit for show and sale the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available and to host the Festival in the loveliest area in the world.

More than 100 volunteers, representing service clubs, chamber businesses and individuals participate in the event.“The success of the festival hinges on the dedication and extensive involvement of every committee that makes up the arts and crafts committee,” said Liz Roberts, Director of Tourism and Special Events for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, “There’s no job that’s too small. Every part is important.” “They go above and beyond to showcase the Festival and Fairhope. Sounds cliché, but it couldn’t be done without them. It is an honor to work with and learn from them all,” said English.

This year’s Arts and Crafts Festival poster art features the Orange Street Pier in Fairhope by Daphne artist Jean-Marie McDonnell. The coastal colors on this eye-catching painting were unveiled in February to a crowd excited to see this year’s selection. “I felt like it just had a little bit of a modern edge to it. I really really loved the colors and the feel and I just thought it represented the Eastern Shore Coast with the water and the bay and the piers and everything. It just drew me in and I just thought, this is the one,” said Arts and Crafts Festival Chairwoman Laura English. The painting is featured on posters promoting the festival throughout the Gulf Coast. “I’m ecstatic. As an artist this is a top honor that the Chamber of Commerce could give me,” said McDonnell. McDonnell is from Daphne and currently displays her work at the Garage Studio in Point Clear. “I just like to get in and mess with the paint on a big canvas. I like color. I like geometric shapes. The process is what’s important, even more than the outcome, it’s the process of painting that’s fun for me and inspiring,” said McDonnell. Many locals regard these posters as a sought after collectible. Signed posters can be purchased for $15. Prints can be purchased for $20. Unsigned posters are also available.

Program
There are many ways Arts and Crafts Festival exhibitors are honored, including the Awards Dinner, where prize money is given to the best of the best. But many would argue the most coveted honor is when visitors visit their booth, and purchase their works. The Patrons Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 worth of arts or crafts from one vendor. When those patrons visit the festival, they will drop by the Chamber office in Fairhope and pickup a ribbon and a placard bearing their own name or the name of their business. Both are placed in their chosen vendor’s booth. “The Patrons Award is such a wonderful way to honor our artists’ talents,” said Liz Thomson, Director of Tourism and Special Events for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce. Patrons may purchase works from any vendor they choose. All the money goes directly to the artist. When more patrons commit, more money is guaranteed to be spent at the festival.

Meet the judges
KATHI GORDON Kathi Gordon is a wellknown and respected jewelry designer today. She began her career as an Engineering Recruiter working directly with manufacturing companies specializing in the HVAC and commercial refrigeration industry. She became a Certified Personnel Consultant and owned her own firm from 1985 through 2004. Although she did not become a full-time working artist until 2005, she began designing and developing her style in 1997. After a local gallery inquired about representing her work, she began selling pieces as early as 1998. Over the years, as a full time artist, she has taught jewelry-making and spoken to a variety of audiences on the concept of design as well as specifically on beadwork design. As she often says, “Design is my forte’ and that’s where I focus; creating unique one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry.” Over the years, she has participated in numerous juried shows at art galleries. She was invited to exhibit in University of West Florida’s “Five Women” (2001) and “Like Mother / Like Son” (2012) partnered with her son Smokey Joe Waitsman. She has been selected on three occasions into the prestigious Cinco Bandares Competition and was purchased into the permanent collection in 2005. Kathi has spent the better part of her adult life supporting and volunteering in non-profit and art organizations. From the original four people in 1994, she devoted the next 17 years to assuring the success of Artel Gallery in Pensacola, the only all-volunteer, cutting edge art gallery in Northwest Florida. Since 2012 she has been a trustee on the board of the Pensacola Museum of Art and is currently the Chair of the Permanent Collection Committee. One of the original members of the Emerald Coast Bead Society in Pensacola, she previously served as president and created and chaired their only Juried Exhibition, “The Art & The Opulence.” She is a published artist and was recently the featured artist in Potential Magazine. She has served as a juror for national art festivals. At this time, her gallery presence includes Marty Campbell Gallery in Pensacola, Newbill Collection 26

(Seaside), Sea Oats (St. George Island) and PMA Gift Shop. Since its inception in 2004, Kathi has been a member of Impact 100 Pensacola Bay Area. Often seen around the local areas showing and selling their wares, Kathi and her son Smokey Joe, a bone carving artist, collaborated until his death in 2012. She currently lives with her husband Mark, their two adorable Papillons and Waldo the parrot in the East Hill section of Pensacola. They share the joy of adding to their contemporary art collection, as well as traveling, RV outings, working in their garden, a good glass of wine and spending time with family and friends. JOAN PECHANEC Joan Pechanec, a fulltime artist, has worked in a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolor, fiber arts, ceramics, collage, found-object assemblages and encaustics. For the past seven years, she has concentrated on oil painting, primarily landscapes with a focus on intense color and strong mood. Currently, Joan is also working in mixed media, pieces combining acrylics, papers and thick oils or wax. Joan is a charter member of the Grand View Fine Arts Society, a community of oil painters in California. Her work has appeared in a variety of venues, most recently in a solo show at the Orland Art Museum, one of the largest galleries in Northern California. Several of her recent pieces are displayed at the Siskiyou Art Museum. Joan has had a parallel career as a psychotherapist with a specialty in creative expression: assisting a broad range of clients from autistic and psychotic children to professional adults in finding and enlivening a personal interpretation of their unique talents and passions. This therapeutic endeavor has inspired her work, particularly the three-dimensional constructions. These contain veiled and highly textured layers of images and paints, a symbolic archeology of a personal journey. She received her B.A. from the University of Denver in 1967, her M.A. from the University of Chicago in
1970, and 1973 completed a post-graduate program in Jungian Studies at the Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley, California. She has travelled extensively; her art has been particularly inspired by the warm colors of Bali, Guatemala, The Gambia and Morocco. She and her husband spent a sabbatical year in central Mexico. Joan lives with her husband, Edgar Award winning novelist Charlie Price, on the Upper Sacramento River in the mountains of Northern California where she paints in her riverside studio. In her leisure, Joan reads, kayaks, swims in nearby lakes and rides a motor scooter through the old rural towns and ranch lands of the west. DANIEL WILKINSON Daniel Wilkinson received a Masters of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from Yale University and a Bachelors of Arts in English from Davidson College. He also studied art at Indiana
University and the Tyler Rome program. His awards include an artist’s resident grant to the Yaddo artist colony in New York State and a Mellon Foundation Grant. He currently is a tenured Associate Professor of drawing, painting and digital imaging at Bucks County Community College near Philadelphia. He has also taught full-time at Louisiana State, Furman, and Towson Universities. He has experience outside the classroom as a scene painter for theaters and TV, a freelance graphic designer and on the staff of the Frick Collection in New York City. He spent his childhood in Jacksonville, Florida and Gadsden and Huntsville, Alabama before moving to Atlanta where he attended Westminster High School. His work has been exhibited both nationally and abroad, most recently at the Art Basel festival in Miami and the Crane Art Center in Philadelphia. Mr. Wilkinson currently works primarily in drawing and painting, but also in prints that combine woodblock and inkjet. His work is landscape-based using an abstract and cubist approach to include the elements of memory and time into perception.

This year’s biggest changes will be to entertainment. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is partnering up with Faulkner State Community College to offer entertainment on Faulkner’s new state-of-the-art Halstead Amphitheater. It’s located on the Fairhope campus at the intersection of Bancroft Street and Morphy Avenue. With the added venue, the Chamber is proud to announce that we are adding a concert to the schedule Saturday night. The Music Jamboree will feature Neil Dover at 3:30 p.m., MidLife Crisis at 5 p.m., and Rondale and the Kit Katz at 7 pm. So pack your lawn chair and come out to enjoy the music under the stars. BICYCLE VALET If you’d like to ride to the festival on two wheels, free valet parking for bicycles will be provided behind the Fairhope Museum of History. The City of Fairhope’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Baldwin County Trailblazers are working together to organize this free and secure bicycle parking area. Volunteers will be on hand to check in and oversee the bicycle parking area. will also be on hand to offer food for concertgoers. Also new this year, the Southern Cancer Center is offering a Rest and Relaxation area. This is located across from Greer’s and the PNC parking lot on South Section Street. Festivalgoers will be able to sit down and rest their feet a minute as they enjoy the festival. Last year we introduced the Kids Art area and it was a tremendous success. So this year it has doubled in size and will encompass the majority of Johnson Avenue. The Children’s area offers your budding artists an opportunity to create individual art and contribute to a larger piece to represent this year’s show.
BRATS TO OFFER SHUTTLE SERVICE FOR FESTIVAL FREE PARKING PROVIDED AT CONVENIENT LOCATIONS
In an effort to ensure smooth traffic flow and alleviate parking problems, the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce recommends festival goers utilize the shuttle service provided by BRATS (Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System). The shuttle will cost $5 a day for a wristband to ride as many times as you’d like. Free parking will be provided at several convenient locations near the downtown Fairhope area, where the festival takes place: Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place, Eastern Shore Village Center and the east side of Volanta Sports Complex. All of the parking locations are less than a five-minute ride away. The busses will drop-off festivalgoers at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Bancroft Street near Faulkner State. Handicapped parking will be available in the municipal parking lot behind Julwin’s restaurant. Once those parking spots are filled, the City of Fairhope recommends handicapped drivers ride the shuttle service. The shuttle service will continue to operate until most visitors are out of the area within a reasonable amount of time. Shuttles will also be available during and after Saturday night’s Music Jamboree at the Halstead Amphitheater at Faulkner State.
