Gulf Shores CrossFit challenges you to improve in 2017 Jim and Dr. Alicia Barton, owners of Gulf Shores CrossFit, began their gym in 2013 after developing a passion for the popular fitness regimen. The couple moved from instructing workouts in their garage to a gym that is conveniently next door to Alicia's chiropractic facility and have been sharing their goal for wellness with anyone who wants to workout. “There are all different fitness levels,” Jim Barton said. “People that have been doing it a few years and some that are just now getting started. A good thing about CrossFit is that it’s scalable, which means we can workout at different levels and use different weights, but doing the same workout and go together.” Gulf Shores CrossFit hosts five classes a day between its coaches. “All classes are whoever wants to come,” Jim said. “If you’re not ready for CrossFit, we have a foundations class. It’s more of a one-on-one type of thing that is building you up so you know what you’re doing and won’t get hurt. Once you’re done with foundations, you can start joining in on regular classes.” The amount of people per class depends on the time of day, month and the weather outside. “Typically, if you come to one of our classes the first thing we do is all get together and figure out what we’re going to do for that hour for that workout,” Jim said. “Then, I explain all the movements and make sure no one has an injury. Then we warm up together. The warm up is just a general warm up to get everything moving, and then I go through the specifics of what we’re about to do like olympic lift or squats or a gymnastics movement.” The workout varies every day, but it’s always the same in general. When the class gets to the intense part of the workout, they cool down and stretch afterwards. “Don’t give up,” Jim said. “It’s very frustrating, even for people who have been doing it for a long time. The key and the biggest tip I have is don’t give up and find ways to work around the things you have going on. There’s always something you can do no matter where you’re 10 Beachin’ ● February 2017
GET at. Keep going.” A new year means a new you. For 2017, make a goal to stick to your resolution long enough to see your desired results. “A lot of people make new year’s resolutions and then about a month into it, it’s over,” Jim said. “You move on, find other things, forget you’re doing it or just get tired of doing the work. I think the biggest thing with that is to not necessarily set exactly what you’re going to do, but say you’re going to do something and just keep doing it.” Barton recommends giving CrossFit at least one month’s try before giving up. “If it doesn’t work, talk to your coach or go out and start walking,” Jim said. “Do something, don’t just quit. Keep evolving and do something. If you’re not happy where you’re at, you’re not going to get any better by not doing anything about it.” Gulf Shores CrossFit also teaches boot camp throughout the week and yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 a.m. Deb Kolynych teaches a gentle yoga class and her husband, Bob, teaches power yoga. “We are really stretching our hips and squatting which preps for the birth itself,” Deb Kolynych said. “There’s not a lot of up and down flowing, but more getting into your core. We take concepts of what we teach in power yoga and soften them. It’s more gentle yoga and stretching.” This yoga is also recommended for beginners. It is meant as a strengthening course to build up to power yoga. “Bob teaches a power yoga, which is pretty intense,” Deb said. “Most people never thought yoga could be so difficult.” Gulf Shores CrossFit is located at 7369 Alamo Circle in Gulf Shores. TRAINING TIPS FOR
ENDURANCE RACES 1 2 GET GOOD SHOES. I can’t

If you’ve read any of my columns in the past, you probably know I like to wax poetic about running and how amazing it is and how more people ought to run. While all those things are true, it’s also really hard. It’s a constant battle with the part of your brain begging you to stop and sheer bullheadedness. It’s rewarding both physically and mentally, but it hurts parts of your body you didn’t realize could hurt. You have to make a lot of sacrifices to make it part of your regular routine. So, I thought I’d offer a little advice on how to make the training for longer races marginally easier. 12 Beachin’ ● February 2017
overstate this enough. It might take you a few pairs to find what you like, and everyone is different. Maybe you like a minimal shoe to feel closer to the road, or maybe you want a little more shoe to avoid a little more injury. You might turn your foot a certain way and need a slightly corrective shoe. Whatever the case may be, find something that works for you.

BE MINDFUL OF NUTRITION. I get some of
us run so we can eat an entire large pizza guilt-free, but what we eat before, during and after a long run is very important. I’m not going to offer too much “expert” opinion here. I will tell you what I usually eat and suggest you do your own trials and research. So, before a long run I usually eat a couple of servings of a fruit like apple or kiwi and some toast or grits. I have just recently added mid-run eating. I like to pack some nuts, raisins, Starburst or an applesauce pouch. After a run, I always eat a banana. It’s superstitious at this point for me, but I rarely get cramps, so take that for what it’s worth. I try to get in a mini-meal no more than 45 minutes after my run to help recover.
FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO. Not everyone likes running with headphones, but if you do, try to find some music that gets you motivated. I used to listen to a certain podcast and wouldn’t let myself listen to it if I wasn’t running. There are even apps which match music to your desired heart rate in beats per minute.

PICK A DESTINATION RACE. I know this isn’t
financially feasible for everyone, but I highly recommend doing so if you can swing it. Making your race a minivacation somewhere fun can make logging those training miles a little sweeter.
7 8 9 DON’T IGNORE AN INJURY. Seriously. We all hate being couched, but better a few days than a few weeks. Go to a doctor if you need to, but don’t treat injuries lightly. They certainly won’t return the favor.

DON’T PUSH TO MAKE A DISTANCE IF YOU’RE NOT READY. Just because
there is a half-marathon coming up and you WANT to run it, doesn’t always mean you SHOULD run it. Look at how many miles you’re logging on an average week and what your long runs are typically. It’s easy to pull up some basic training plans online and assess where you are before making race decisions.
TAKE TIME TO REST. Enough said.
TAPER. TAPER. TAPER. Someone wise once told me you’re not going to get in better shape by Friday than you were Sunday. Gently lower your mileage before raceday to give your muscles time to heal and rest.

GRAB YOURSELF SOME NEW GEAR. I know
this sounds silly and materialistic, but splurging on a couple of new pairs of leggings or something with a fun pattern can make lacing up feel like getting ready for a date.

DON’T TRY ANYTHING NEW THE DAY OR YOUR RACE. You’ve found what works, so stick to it. Don’t wear new gear without knowing if it rubs you wrong in a weird place. Don’t go overboard with a lavish breakfast. Don’t add or change the way you warmup just because you’re around other runners. Run your race, not theirs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night. Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2. Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3. Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4. A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted. A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beau�ful summer morning when we le� Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge�ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissa�sfied with the last few a�empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera�on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on �me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau�ful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a li�le chicken a�er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a�er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi�on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi�oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo�on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi�oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi�on our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all �mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A�er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi�oning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A�er shampooing and before condi�oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu�ng any condi�oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. A�er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo�le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

By Destiny Brown The USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile is an adventure and history lesson for all ages. Come explore an establishment that is guaranteed to make a memory or relive one. “The USS ALABAMA and Battleship Memorial Park is a great military park,” said Rhonda Davis, Director of Sales and Marketing. “It allows families to step back into history and see what life aboard a battleship and submarine was like during WWII. Along with these mighty naval vessels, visitors can see and
learn about historic aircraft in the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion and ride our flight simulator. Touring is self-guided, so everyone can go at their own pace.” It is recommended to take two and a half hours to tour the entire park. The park opened January 1965 and has since been an attraction for people from all over. “After WWII, the USS ALABAMA was put in mothballs by the US Navy in Washington state, along with other battleships, to be used for her parts,” Davis said. “In 1964, an article appeared in the Mobile Press-Register announcing the plans by the Navy to scrap the USS ALABAMA. It was through a statewide fundraising campaign by the school children of Alabama that over $100,000 was raised to help bring this mighty ship to Mobile.” To cater to the participants of the park, food facilities, gift shops and other amenities are also available. “We have The Galley, our snack bar, that serves food daily,” Davis said. “We have outrageously good bacon cheeseburgers, along with sandwiches, personal pizzas and daily specials. Ice cream, slushies and hot chocolate is also served.” The park also has a gift shop and dog

POPULAR ATTRACTIONS BATTLE BRIDGE:
When tourists visit, they always want to visit the battle bridge. This is the area located on the level 4 deck in the super structure of the USS ALABAMA and is where the captain would command the ship during battle. This area contains the navigation bridge, the battle bridge with 16-inch thick armor, the pilot house, the chart house and the captain’s sea cabin. It is from this area that all the battle commands were given from and where the crew steered the ship during engagement. When in battle, the captain moved to this area and never left. Our curatorial and maintenance departments restored this area of the USS ALABAMA this year.
THE GALLEY:
The galley aboard the USS ALABAMA is the area where the ship’s food was prepared and the crew members were feed. You can see just how organized the ship was and how busy this area would have been. The galley fed the crew of 2,500 every day. The cooks had to prepare more than 7,500 meals a day, over 50,000 meals a week. Just to serve the crew morning coffee it took four large 80-gallon pots to make 320 gallons of coffee.

Admission to the park’s grounds is $2 per car.” The main deck of the USS ALABAMA is handicapped accessible, as is the aircraft pavilion. Because the USS ALABAMA and the USS DRUM are National Historic Landmarks, they are preserved and restored in their 1940s original condition. In August, the USS ALABAMA will celebrate her 75th anniversary. The park just celebrated the USS DRUM’s 75th anniversary in November.

This is the oldest submarine on public display. Climbing through this submarine you get a sense of how tight quarters were for the 72 men who served aboard her.

by Destiny Brown Carolyn Wagner didn’t grow up as an artist. In her childhood, she was more academic and took up writing. She was creative, but never took art classes. It wasn’t until she had children and left her career as a promotional writer and producer for television that she discovered her artistic side. “I had some personal tragedies, and I needed some healing,” Wagner said. “I had always been intrigued by mosaics so I read up a little on it and I made a plate.” She then discovered a mosaic online group and began to attend conferences with a national organization. “I began going to them and the workshops with internationally known mosaicists,” Wagner said. “I initially self taught, but then I had some training.” Most of Wagner’s work is coastal related.

“I grew up in the mountains and that still has my heart, but most of my work has some kind of coastal reference either with subject matter or the palette,” Wagner said. “I’m drawn to coastal colors.” Wagner teaches classes at the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance (GCAA) in Gulf Shores and the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach. She recently finished a seven-week mosaics class for kids at the GCAA. In the meantime, Wagner has her teaching certificate for K-6 and substitutes on occasion. The art of mosaics is a unique form of art that takes patience and is a building process. “First, I start with a concept and sketch it out,” Wagner said. “As a writer, most of my mosaics have a poem that goes with it. Sometimes the poem comes first and then the mosaic and sometimes the other way around.”
Many things go into consideration when building mosaic art. “You have a lot of technical considerations,” Wagner said. “If it’s going to be outdoors or not, if the adhesive you have is the proper one, these are considerations before you get started. Mosaics are heavy, so you can’t use a traditional canvas. You can use wood, but it gets heavy. There are light weight building substrates to use.” Wagner uses a variety of materials for her pieces from glass to stone to shell to stained class, and there are different ways to break the materials. “You can choose to grout it, which gives it a more cohesive look, but my favorite part is probably laying down the tile itself, which is called the ‘tesserae,’” Wagner said. “You can get lost in it.” “For me, the most enjoyable part of the process is in the actual execution of my design—the point when I start putting the tesserae (tile) onto the substrate, and the design
starts to come to life,” Wagner said. “Sometimes, it’s an idea that has been in my head a short time, and sometimes for years. I also enjoy the formation of an idea, which usually comes to me during my morning walks gazing out at the bay. I don’t mind that the solitude of the moment is punctuated by the excitement of the birth of an idea”.
She enjoys the art opportunities offered on the Gulf Coast and how helpful other artists can be. “There’s a lot of other artists that you can bounce ideas around with and limitless inspiration,” Wagner said. She is also involved in Turtle Tracks in Gulf Shores.
“I did a mosaic turtle at the T-section at the Hangout in Gulf Shores that Tacky Jacks sponsored,” Wagner said. “I would love to get more involved in public art. Mosaics is an expensive medium, so it is hard to get the funding. I have a lot of ideas in my head that I’d like to get the community involved with.”
Wagner is based out of Josephine, Al. She also creates mosaic jewelry and beaded pieces and accepts commissions for fine art wall hangings and architectural installations, and can incorporate a client’s or interior designer’s vision into a design. Wagner’s work can be found at Coastal Arts Center, Foley Arts Center and GCAA. She will be displaying and selling her work at the upcoming Orange Beach Arts Festival. February and on into early May traditionally mark the best months to fish for sheepshead, also nicknamed convict fish, because of its black and white vertically striped body. Another unique physical identifying feature is its human-like teeth. Also, its face resembles a sheep. A variety of baits can be used along with different tackle and methods when seeking this fish.
Location
Find any structure that has barnacles growing on it. An old pier, bridge or gas rigs located in the Gulf or Bay are excellent areas to target. Another great location is the jetties around Perdido Pass. Carry a shovel or straight blade hoe to scrape barnacles off the structure. This is known as “chumming.”
Bait
Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, oysters cut into small pieces and ghost shrimp all make excellent baits. Sheepshead never seem to bite artificial bait, frozen shrimp or cut bait. The bite is usually so light, it has gained the reputation of expert bait thieves. Ghost shrimp can be sucked out of the sand near the water’s edge using a PVC suction gadget purchased from local tackle shops.
Tackle
Any type rod and reel will work. Tight line method works best by fishing straight down using sufficient weight depending on conditions. I prefer a 3” – 5” circle hook. One of the best methods is to anchor your boat up current of the structure and use a slip cork to allow the bait to drift back to the rig or pier.
