Here are the hottest apparel, accessories and fashion musts for a perfect (and trendy) day and evening at the beach! We asked local retailers, The Beach House Boutique and Bungalows about the upcoming fashion for the season. “Our approach is try to have a little more trendy classic look,” said Robin Mills, owner of The Beach House Boutique in Gulf Shores. SHOES AND ACCESSORIES “Shoe-booties, which are open toed and open back booties, are trending for spring,” Mills said. “People are wearing shorter pants to show off their shoe-booties, so it's kind of balancing.” Booties are trending, even in suede, this spring. As for purses, cross-body, totes and saddlebags remain most popular. “The boho treatment continues through the hand bag market,” Mills said. “As for jewelry, natural beads, or unglazed beads, and stones are still going strong.” FOR THE GUYS In menswear, performance shirts are big this year. “Performance shirts are popular this year, which are the special material for a lot of people who go deep sea fishing or other sports,” Woodard said. “The shirt doesn't retain moisture. It's becoming more and more popular, not just the Gunner & Hook, but many different varieties for men and women in the performance shirts.”

By Destiny Brown Sports fans and fine art fans alike will find something interesting at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne. Founded in 1972 by Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich, the Academy's mission has been to serve the nation and the world as a sport education resource upgrading sport through programs of instruction, research and service. “We are first and foremost a sports online university,” said Keith Ayers, director of communications for the US Sports Academy “We have over 1,000 students from all over the world. We have bachelors, masters and doctoral
degrees and we are large in terms of the sports education world.” The US Sports Academy is an independent, non-profit organization. The role of the Academy is to prepare men and women from around the world for careers in the profession of sports. “We have partnerships with different places all over the world like Sports Authority in Thailand,” said Eric Mann, communications assistant for US Sports Academy. “They will send students over during the summer and they will take a class here. We also have a partnership with China teaching them to be coaches, and we do a lot of things in the Middle East.” Within the Academy is the American Sport Art Museum and
Archives, which is dedicated to the preservation of sports, history, art and literature. “This is part of our public service,” Ayers said. “You'll notice as you walk around that other people are walking around from all over the country as they're going through this area. We have people that contact us on sport art issues from all over the place.” Outside the establishment are huge metal sculptures by local artist Bruce Larson. The sculptures are made entirely out of scrap metal and portray different sports including the Iron Bowl Monument. Also on the outside of the building is the largest outdoor mural in the state, named "A Tribute to the Human Spirit" and created by Cristobal Gabarron. Among the treasures at the museum are awards given to various sports idols and contributors, Olympic
medals and manuscripts dating back to 1896 and a variety of sport art that covers a wide range of professional sports. “You can walk in here two to three hours if you want to and see all of the different artists and sports and it’s free,” Mann said. “I'm a sports fan, and I think a lot of people here are. We don't really think about a connection between art and sports. I think a lot of people can come in here and find a painting or a sculpture that reminds them of a time or a game they watched. There's something here for every sports fan.” The ASAMA collection contains works of sport art from worldrenowned artists and is arguably the largest collection of sport art in the world. A Celebration of
ART AND CULTURE!
Approximately 50 artists from Alabama and surrounding states will be featuring their works at the Ballyhoo Fine Arts Festival, March 4, in Gulf Shores. Some of the artists showing their works will be local potters Steve Dark and Anne Webb and Larry Allen from Leeds, Alabama. Local plein air oil artist, Craig Reynolds will be on site, and Homewood, Alabama watercolor artist, Michael Davis. Many others will gather to show handcrafted jewelry, acrylic, pastel, watercolor and oil paintings, metal art, wood art and pottery. Ballyhoo is an event hosted by the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance, a non-profit entity in Gulf Shores. The Ballyhoo Festival begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. at 225 E. 24th Avenue in Gulf Shores, Alabama. There is no admission fee. BALLYHOO FOR CHILDREN The Ballyhoo Fine Arts Festival promises to be a fun-filled day for families. The Ballyhoo Trackless Train will travel the perimeter of the Festival site, transporting happy little faces and will stop for a sweet treat along the way. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo will have a petting zoo for children. Little ones can get up close and touch zoo animals. This is a wonderful learning experience. Crosswinds Church will have three Children’s Art Activities tents, with hands-on art creations offered.

BALLYHOO QUEEN CONTEST The Ballyhoo Queen Contest is a parody of sorts. It is not a beauty contest, but rather a fun, lighthearted event where contestants compete for prize money to be donated to their favorite charity. The entry fee is $10.00 and entry forms are available online at www. ballyhoofestival.com. This event is hosted by Darwin Singleton of Channel 15 in Mobile, Al., and begins at Noon. BALLYHOO CULTURAL EXCHANGE WITH THE POARCH CREEK INDIANS The Ballyhoo Festival will feature an original tribal dance by the Poarch Creek Indians from Poarch, Alabama. The PCI is the only federally recognized tribe in the State of Alabama. Each dance and costume is described by the PCI cultural director to enhance the knowledge and history of their tribe. They will perform in ceremonial regalia at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night. Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2. Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3. Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4. A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted. A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

A Tribute to
Opal Young An Artistic Life Well Lived By Eloise Thomley Vice Chairman/Publicity Director Gulf Coast Arts Alliance
“Each phase is a stepping stone toward the making of an artist” - Opal Young Opal Young grew up in rural Southwest Mississippi where she fell in love with nature and never saw a sunset she didn’t want to paint. She received her B.S. and MS. Degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi in Health and Physical Education with emphasis on the art of human movement. While teaching at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1963, she visited Gulf Shores. She fell in love with the sea and it kept calling her back. She bought her first house in Gulf Shores in 1969. Opal collected seashells and driftwood, developing a hobby and a souvenir business, which she operated for the last 43 years, always living on the water, which called her piscine heart.

Opal Young started out as a “street artist” in Fairhope and was one of the original artists of the “Art Market” at Lulu’s. She started oil painting in 2001 and has since painted over 1,000 paintings. Opal has won several awards from “People’s Choice” to being selected as artist for the Jubilee Festival in Daphne. One of her works was chosen for “Art Into Words”, an event presented by the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance and the South Baldwin Community Theatre. Her works now hang in the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Art Gallery in Gulf Shores and in the Ginny Lane Restaurant at the Wharf. In describing her evolution in the world of art, Opal said, “each phase is a stepping stone toward the making of an artist”.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beau�ful summer morning when we le� Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge�ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissa�sfied with the last few a�empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera�on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on �me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau�ful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a li�le chicken a�er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a�er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi�on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi�oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo�on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 24 Beachin’ ● March 2017
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi�oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi�on our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all �mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A�er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi�oning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A�er shampooing and before condi�oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu�ng any condi�oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. A�er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo�le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

March usually means Spring is near, warmer weather is common and the desire to start seriously fishing is on your mind. However, March is known for windy conditions which makes Gulf fishing off a boat often uncomfortable and even unsafe. That doesn't mean we’ll be sitting on the couch until the weather improves. There are several great places to catch sheepshead and speckled trout without risking our lives or the need for a big offshore boat. Lake Shelby, Little Lagoon and the Gulf State Pier are great options. LAKE SHELBY Located in Gulf State Park, Shelby Lake’s water is brackish due to it being spring fed and also salt water fed from Little Lagoon. A great way to fish is to rent a kayak or use a small boat equipped with only a trolling motor. Bull redfish, speckled trout, largemouth bass, bream and catfish have all been caught trolling mirrOlures. GULF STATE PIER Requires a salt water fishing license, but offers a variety of fishing opportunities. Sheepshead can easily be found eating barnacles off the structure. The best bait to use is live shrimp, fiddler crabs or ghost shrimp. Cut oyster pieces are also good. You can also try “fish bites” which are small pieces of material impregnated with shrimp. There are always plenty of “good ole boys” that are glad to share techniques. LITTLE LAGOON Can be accessed from Mo's landing on Ft. Morgan road or the cross over bridge on Hwy. 182 west beach. Speckled Trout, white trout, and flounder are target species. One proven method is to wade, however the water may still be a little cold if you are from the South.

The Waterway Village Zydeco & Crawfish Festival boils up a beaucoup (Cajun for a lot) of fun on Saturday, April 15. Sink your teeth into some hot, juicy, lip-smacking crawfish while dancing to the infectious rhythms of some of the best Zydeco bands from around the South. There will be plenty of crawfish, arts and crafts vendors, and children’s activities. If that’s not enough, you’ll have the chance to work up an appetite with the 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Run beginning at 8:00 a.m., starting at Waterway Village next to Tacky Jacks Gulf Shores. Then after the race, stay for free beer and refreshments! Part of the proceeds go to a local animal rescue, Furrever Homes. For race information, visit harleysports.com.
